This scenario was pulled from the headlines. A middle schooler with special needs was turned down when he asked a classmate to be his Valentine in a public performance. The resulting social media backlash both for and against the young woman gives us plenty to unpack about culture, ethics, etiquette, social media, and special needs folks in our communities. Welcome to Season 5 of Ethics and Etiquette Podcast. We thought an episode on Apologies would be fairly straightforward, but we were surprised at the deep and rich dialogue which the topic prompted. We've all said or done things--or neglected to say or do things--which caused another to feel harmed or hurt. What belongs in a sincere apology, and what should you leave out? We've all experienced those awkward moments at a restaurant when one check is dropped off and there are three, four, five, or ten people at the table. How can you get the check paid so it's comfortable and fair for all parties? We talk about some proactive strategies and scripts you can use to make it happen. Also in this show, we introduce a new segment called "On a Positive Note" in which we recognize someone or something in our contemporary culture which is uplifting and noteworthy. The Sebastian Maniscalco excerpt is from his show "What's Wrong With People?" on Netflix, and its appearance here follows the fair use and fair dealing guidelines. How Could This Happen? We put our resident attorney, Kelly, through her paces as we look into the recent Supreme Court leak in the Dobbs vs. Jackson Womens Health Organization Case. An entire draft opinion written by Justice Alito made its way to a reporter, who then published it in Politico. Chief Justice Roberts called the leak "a betrayal and an affront to the Court." Deliberations are privileged information and this represents a serious ethical violation. This case is also intensely political as it's situated at an intersection of privacy, precedent, technology, and medicine. Join us for this exhausting yet educational conversation. Though it's by no means an exhaustive list, here are a dozen or so things you should never say, plus a few general guidelines to keep in mind during conversations. Relevant, substantive tangles of contemporary life remain our focus, but we occasionally pivot to etiquette in the form of Etiquette Quick Hits. A New York Times headline recently asked, "Is everyone in politics writing a tell-all?" Then it answered its own question with a resounding "YES." We continue with our two-part series on the backpacking adventures of Mike and Kathy Derrick on the John Muir Trail in California. "Take only pictures. Leave only footprints" is a familiar phrase for many of us, yet have we stopped to examine what this really means in practice? Mike and Kathy illustrate the seven principles of "Leave No Trace" with examples from their recent hike, and even introduce "Beyond Leave No Trace," which extends environmental responsibility into a broader context. Hikin' Mike Derrick is gone on another epic adventure, so it's just us gals (Kelly and Marna) talking about petty but pesky workplace dilemmas that can cause a lot of dissatisfaction over time if they're not addressed early. What's the answer if you're fielding work calls when you're on an unpaid lunch hour? Secondly, how do you gracefully bow out of socializing with co-workers in the evenings and on weekends? Finally, what do you do when you're hired to teach pilates at an agreed-upon hourly rate and then the boss announces you have to work extra hours at a reduced rate? In an Etiquette Quick Hit, we revisit a fundamental lesson in good manners and discuss how it applies today. In this episode, Mike, Kelly, and Marna look at suggested forms of address in different settings. Should children call adults by their first names, for example? What are the best practices for professionals, such as doctors and lawyers, to address their clients? We find in most cases it comes down to this: start with formal and then downshift to less formal as you get permission. Ethics and Etiquette is a thought-provoking dialogue about everyday dilemmas. Thanks to the listeners who provided the content for this episode by emailing us their everyday dilemmas (inbox@ethicsandetiquette.com). In the first scenario, a listener asks what to do about a new neighbor who arrives unannounced and walks into her house without knocking. Then we discuss the way forward for a landlady situation gone very bad when she rents her house to her ex-husband. Finally, what do you do when a family member borrows an expensive piece of sporting equipment and returns it with damages but doesn't acknowledge it? Ethics and Etiquette is a thought-provoking dialogue about everyday dilemmas. We offer insights and perspectives on sticky situations to help you scrutinize your choices and exercise your own ethical muscles. The podcast is presented by author and host Marna Ashburn; wife, mother, and attorney Kelly Halligan Zimmerman; and Mike Derrick, a retired Army Officer, combat vet, and father of four. We discuss the case of Olympic track hopeful Sha'Carri Richardson, who was suspended from competition for one month after testing positive for marijuana, which is a banned substance under the US Anti-Doping Agency rules. Her suspension meant she missed the Olympics in Tokyo. A number of questions and complaints came up in articles and forums about this suspension. Two of the most frequent were: “How could a gifted Olympic athlete have her dreams shattered because she consumed a plant that is legal throughout most of the country? (It was legal in Oregon where she smoked it.) The second frequently asked question was, “Where's the compassion for this woman who had to cope with the death of her birth mother?” Join us as we facilitate a discussion on this timely topic. We're taking a summer hiatus for the month of July. On the first Wednesday of August, we'll be back with all new episodes. In the meantime, you can revisit some of your favorites from the past three seasons. We hope you're having a good summer so far. Take care and be well.
June 14 is Flag Day in the United States, a day to commemorate the adoption of the flag by resolution of the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. Today, it's celebrated as a way to preserve the traditions, pride, history, and respect for our nation's symbol. In keeping with these intentions, we're talking about flag etiquette and protocol, using as our source the US Flag Code, a set of instructional rules for display and care of the national flag. You can find the code online and there's also a handy reference here www.USA.gov/flag. Join us as we discuss "Ten Things You Should NOT Do With the US Flag," proper etiquette while the national anthem is played, which days to display the flag (HINT: All of them), why bunting is your friend, and how we feel about variations on the US flag, such as the Thin Blue Line Flag for law enforcement. On this day in June, which is roughly halfway between Mother's Day and Father's Day, we present a thought-provoking dialogue on the memorable words of wisdom we heard from our parents. All.The.Time. You know, those truisms and admonitions they repeated which we tucked into our back pockets and which slowly became part of our character education. "Wear a clean shirt and comb your hair." Yes, those. Enjoy! "Ethics and Etiquette" is a thought-provoking dialogue about everyday dilemmas. Our goal is to offer you insights and perspectives on sticky situations so you can better examine your choices and exercise your own ethical muscles. After the recent televised funeral of Prince Phillip, we though an episode on funeral etiquette might be helpful. Deaths are difficult times for everyone involved, so we offer a few refreshers on the practicalities of the situation, such as what to wear and what to do when you encounter a funeral procession on the road. Like most of our shows, the conversation takes a deeper turn as we open up about our own encounters with loss and ritual. "Ethics and Etiquette" is a thought-provoking dialogue about everyday dilemmas. Our goal is to offer you insights and perspectives on sticky situations so you can better examine your choices and exercise your own ethical muscles. The combination etiquette/ethical dilemma this week is about having pictures of your first wife or first husband hanging in the house after you've remarried. (We're speaking of deceased spouses, not ex-spouses.) Is that fair or is it a foul? What if the current partner objects? This tricky topic introduces some meaningful and uplifting perspectives on integrating loss, moving forward, and showing one another a lot of forbearance in the process. Our two episodes on "Inheritance" have generated by far the most listener responses. This is our third circle back on the subject with stories ripped from the headlines. Supermodel Paulina Porizkova was shocked to find out last year that her estranged husband, Ric Ocasek, had cut her out of his will completely. They had co-mingled their earnings during their thirty-five year marriage, but she handed off financial oversight to her husband and their business manager. We discuss her story and tease out the lessons learned. The second scenario is about Marie Osmond's announcement on "The Talk" that she would be leaving all her money to charity and nothing to her seven children because she wants them to find their own way in life. Ethics and Etiquette looks at the recycling effort in this country vs. other countries. In the United States, only about 30% of recyclable material actually gets recycled. We're making progress, but we have lots of room for improvement. We discuss ways to get there and how the younger generation is helping the effort. The Ethics and Etiquette panel falls down the rabbit hole of gratuity giving in this week's episode, including discussing a whole bunch of situations in which you may not have even known a tip was in order. We reached out to some expert sources for answers.
Since Monday was President’s Day, a day to honor the birthdays of Presidents Washington and Lincoln, we wanted to talk about a list entitled “George Washington’s 110 Rules for Civility.” It’s based on a set of rules composed by French Jesuits in 1595 which would then form the basis of a young man’s character education in the 18th century. Although some seem stuffy and funny by today’s standards, most of the rules are still amazingly applicable as a modern code of personal conduct. We discuss several of them in this week’s episode. The complete list is in the public domain and you’ll find it at www.mountvernon.org.
Marna asks Kelly and Mike to help her critically think through a decision to quit Amazon and Amazon Prime. What started as an impulse to support her local economy became more urgent after Amazon kicked Parler off their web servers. Things took a dark turn during our podcast as we examined Amazon's sordid business practices and their effects on competition. Suddenly, deciding to quit Amazon became a multi-faceted lens through which to assess culture, commerce, community, and communication. Don't miss this conversation! American drivers tend to ignore crosswalks and freak out at roundabouts. In the interest of public safety, we thought it was worth an episode to remind our listeners about the rules of the road.
Ethics and Etiquette is a thought-provoking discussion about everyday dilemmas. This week we take time to reflect on the strange and unsettling 2020. We talk about what’s become clear to us during this time, and we finish our second season by acknowledging the winners this year (hint: Plexiglass and Zoom, to name two). Ethics and Etiquette is a thought-provoking discussion about everyday dilemmas. This week, we’re talking about panhandling. You know, the folks at the intersection or outside the mall with cardboard signs that say “Homeless and hungry. Please help. Bless you.” This is something we’re conflicted about. On one hand, charity compels us to help others less fortunate. On the other hand, we wonder if we’re enabling irresponsible behavior or worse, being duped or played. We’re mixing up the format today and doing a lightning round. Five perplexing but unrelated scenarios don't form a cohesive theme but we're talking about all of them today. What do you think about applauding in church? What about reciting the creed when you're attending a church which isn't your denomination? How awful is it really to sneak in your own food at the movie theater? How about using someone else's Netflix or Amazon Prime login credentials? And finally, what should you do when you come across mountain bikers on hiking trails where they're expressly forbidden? Join us for our insights and then add your own perspectives at our website, www.EthicsandEtiquette.com or Instagram @ethicsetiquette or our Facebook page, Ethics and Etiquette. New episodes are released on the first and third Wednesdays of the month. The podcast team is Kelligan Halligan Zimmerman, Mike Derrick, and host Marna Ashburn.
