Jane Lo, Singapore Correspondent speaks with Dr. Michael McGuire, Senior Lecturer in Criminology, Surrey Centre of Cyber Security, University of Surrey (United Kingdom)Dr Michael McGuire joined the Department as Senior Lecturer in Criminology in September 2012. Dr McGuire read Philosophy & Scientific method at the London School of Economics where he acquired a first class BSc Econ and he completed his PhD, at Kings College London. He has subsequently developed an international profile in the study of technology and the justice system and has published widely in these areas. His first book Hypercrime: The New Geometry of Harm (Glasshouse, 2008), involved a critique of the notion of cybercrime as a way of modelling computer enabled offending and was awarded the 2008 British Society of Criminology runners up Book Prize. His most recent publication Technology, Crime & Justice: The Question Concerning Technomia (Routledge, 2012) is the first book in the field of Criminology and Criminal Justice to attempt an overview of the implication of technology for the justice system and complements a range of applied studies in this area, including a comprehensive evidence review of cybercrime for the Home Office. Dr McGuires research interests also encompass questions relating to the impacts of the instincts and irrationality upon crime and justice and his paper “Abnormal Law” was recently included as a chapter in the three-volume series on Criminalisation (OUP) edited by Professor Anthony Duff of Stirling. He is currently completing a new monograph in this area to be titled The Criminology of Pleasure (for Taylor & Francis, 2014). In this podcast, Dr McGuire shares insights on Nation States conflict in cyber space, with reference to his research (“Web of Profit - April 2021”). Report available here He points to how cybercrime economies are shaping the character of Nation State conflict in cyber space, where Nation States have become both “beneficiaries of and contributors” in the US$1.5 trillion cybercrime economy, by sharing, selling and buying tools and skills. Further to the asymmetric nature of operations in cyber space enabling smaller nations to confront larger powers, he highlights recent incidents that also underscore the emergence of multi-vector conflicts, where conventional warfare is beginning to integrate cyber abilities. He also discusses how trends such as “cognitive hacking” of attitudes on social media and others, contribute to indications that tensions between Nation States have escalated from “cyber competition” to today's “advanced cyber conflict”. Amidst these developments, Dr McGuire shares challenges, including the attribution problem, in shaping policies to respond to the rising Nation State actor threats in cyber space. He also cautions the knowledge gap that exists - that our perspectives, formed by reports issued from U.S or UK, do not necessarily represent a complete picture of the threats faced by nations across the world. Today's marketers wear many hats—when it comes to webinars, they have to build the slides, run the software, and follow up. Despite the reputation and stereotype of marketers being extroverted and performers, many don't like being on stage or camera. The purpose of a webinar is to bring your attendees/audience closer to what they need. In this podcast episode, Ashley Levesque from Demio walks us through the power of webinar platforms, building engagement, and how to build a webinar funnel and KPIs for HealthTech applications. Build it into your marketing messaging and automation. Healthcare providers—whether attacked or not—are chilled every time they consider a new solution to add to their digital mix. Don't miss that hurdle in the customer journey you and your sales department are creating for potential clients. You can set yourself apart by taking these three steps. Start with You Michael Jackson famously sang, “I'm starting with the man in the mirror.” You need to start with your own company. How well do you handle sensitive data to prevent loss, a breach, or corporate espionage? Start with you. Make sure your company data is locked away. Give your IT team freedom to look at cybersecurity tools and stay on the cutting edge. Build upgrades into your budget so you can be more nimble. How carefully do you handle your own customer data? With the onset of GDPR and CCPA, many companies wrestled with their customer data plans, their email lists, and more. However, a large number of SaaS companies, especially start-ups and those in the US but outside of California, didn't upgrade their websites and systems because they didn't meet the threshold requirements. If you're going to be an unbreakable link in the chain for your customers, build that strength now. Systems and procedures are not enough to protect your customers' sensitive data. Every person who works at your company (plus any freelancers) need to keep the value front and center in all that they do. Imagine if you went inside for a banking transaction and could see another customer's information on the screen or could easily look on the teller side of the counter and see account numbers, names, and balances. You would feel like you were banking at a careless institution. Work with your entire team to raise the standard of protection so they each feel responsible. Call it security collaboration. You may even want to create some internal marketing for the standard so that everyone feels part of something bigger than themselves. (For more, listen at 14:00 and following and 27:00 and following.) When you create your next product, don't wait till after you've developed it to add security features. Start with cybersecurity. Build your product in an environment of security. (Listen at 24:00 and following.) Spruce Up Your Security Process within Marketing Functions When a visitor comes to your site and downloads a white paper or signs up for your email list, what security protocol is in place? Is there two-factor authentication or a verification code sent by email or text? How do those messages look, feel, and sound from a marketing perspective? Don't accept boilerplate language or templates here. Work on these expressions of security so that your users feel secure when they interact with you. Don't let your privacy policy be a jumbled mess of legalese that is a mess to read on the screen. Treat it like a long blog article. Use subheadings and simpler language for a better experience whether your visitor is skimming or reading. Help them feel confident in your security. (Listen at 16:00 for more information.) If someone unsubscribes from your list, don't waste an opportunity to demonstrate how carefully you treat personal data. Sure, you may still want to try and retain their place on your list, but it is more important to let someone leaving know with confidence that they won't receive any more communication from you and their name isn't for sale. What other subtle ways could you remind your visitors and email list that their data is secure? Include Security in Your Front Line Marketing Messaging Trust must be earned. You can't call yourself a trusted partner. Only your customers can bestow that honor on you. In the same way, you can't demand to be trusted in the marketing and sales process. You must earn it. However, you won't earn your prospect's trust if you don't talk about security and demonstrate it. When you answer objections about your solution, do you include any security information? Do you include security as a part of your FAQs? Can you spare a few words in your elevator pitch to nod to security? How many seconds does security receive in your pitch presentation and deck? Do you have any comments and endorsements from existing clients about security? Keeping data secure is high stakes for healthcare institutions. Be their armor-bearer. Help your customers be even more secure than they are now. Tony Anscombe, Chief Security Evangelist for ESET believes there is a broader call in the healthcare industry. “Healthcare is regulated by HIPAA. This is very generic security terminology used in HIPAA,” Anscombe said. “I think if I was in the HealthTech industry, I would be looking beyond HIPAA compliance. When you have regulations or legislation, it's merely a stake in the ground. Go beyond. Innovate further. Look at some of the other innovations around security technology that could be used to further—not just comply—but to go way beyond compliance. There's too much at stake.” Links Mentioned on This Episode Dr. Michael McGuire presented his research at RSA 2018 where he found that the total cost of cybercrime worldwide was $1.5 Trillion per year. In 2020, the World Economic Forum revised that number. They estimated that the global risk was over $6 Trillion. In 2018, Atlanta, Georgia's Smart City Servers were hacked and the ransom was $51,000 in bitcoin. The attack on Kaseya, a SaaS and managed service provider, was attacked with a total ransom of $70 million. Britain's National Health Service was attacked but the government didn't pay the ransom. It cost an estimated $122 million to bring the network back online. Zero Day Vulnerability in Microsoft. Key Takeaways: Thousands of businesses are impacted by cyber breaches every year – and may don’t even know it. Cybersecurity is a team effort at all levels. The pain of losing a loved one can feel insufferable and coping with that loss is one of life’s biggest challenges. Grief can disrupt every state of your well-being, from mental to emotional and even physical health. In the last year, my nephew, Michael McGuire, experienced an extraordinarily rare tragedy when he lost both his son and wife during child birth. Despite unbearable heartbreak, I had never seen someone respond so heroically. In today’s profound conversation, I ask him to share his story in hopes that people can find inspiration in his strength. I've never seen someone be so heroically strong for all the other people in their lives. How did you find that strength amongst tragedy? Michael: I remember calling out my family motto, justice and fortitude is invincible, and realizing that strength in the face of this is really what I needed to do for myself, for her family, and for her. It was a leap of faith. A lot of it came from love, a lot of it came from the strength that she had taught me throughout her life. She was an amazingly kind and giving person. I wanted to do her proud and I want to make sure that I lived in her memory. I want her actions to carry on through me. Travis: I’d never seen a tragedy like this and not really knowing how to react, you kind of follow Michael as an example. You see him giving people hugs, embracing the sadness and how much inspiration he gets from hearing stories from other people. All of a sudden, people are grieving in this really healthy way. You're still celebrating Mary Anne and it was completely different then what I thought tragedy would be like. It showed me that you can make a choice. Do you need to understand why this happened? Michael: Having a reason why is definitely a natural instinct, but for me it doesn't change anything. Mary Anne lived an incredible life, we lived an incredible life, however short. Now she's gone and finding out why and how, aside from a learning experience for medical professionals, isn't going to change anything for me. It doesn't change the fact that I now have to move on and start a new life and continue living the way I want to. Do you believe in God? Can you imagine some people would be angry at God? Michael: I do. Mary Anne and Oliver are with God right now. The priest at the Catholic funeral on the night of the prayers said a very powerful thing that I remember. He said sometimes the hardest prayer is thy will be done, the acceptance that this is outside of our control and to let God do His will. It’s an incredibly large burden to carry but that's a choice. It's a choice to make it feel like a burden or it's a choice to make it feel like a privilege to be able to honor her memory in every way, shape or form you can. What have you learned about grief? Michael: Everyone grieves differently. The other incredibly important thing to know is that grieving never ends. I will always grieve for Mary Anne for the rest of my life. That grief may change and it may become a different form but I will never stop grieving. Every time my thoughts go to Mary and there is sadness, there is always happiness with it as well. Can you only be as happy as you are sad? Michael: I definitely find myself smiling a lot more often these past couple months than I have before. To have that emotional balance, that extreme on one side, it comes out on the other side too. It’s a lot more little things that put a smile on my face here and there. I can find myself just grinning wildly looking at a forest on a drive or something like that that brings back a great memory the two of us had. I think that is a very true statement. What is a healthy way to grieve? Michael: I got a piece of paper from my grief counsellor and it showed two different sides of grief. It was a forward moving side and grief itself. Part of the conversation she had with me was that when you're leaning on the grief too much and you're not doing enough forward mo...

The Adelaide Show 2017 Retrospective: Politics, is our review of question time on The Adelaide Show podcast, in which we held hearings into the political machinery that governs our lives. Our retrospective is co-hosted by 2017 guest, Leila Henderson. In 2017, some of the honourable members for this topic include: Jim Manning from our Unbearable Challenge of Ageing episode in which he lamented the heavy handed approach to regulation in the nursing home sector Ainsley Maconochie who has Multiple Sclerosis and who expressed frustration over legislation here that forced her to travel to Israel for disease-halting treatment Jeannine Malcolm, an advocate for eating insects who lamented at the conservative approach to dealing with this new frontier when it comes to regulations But for this week's show we'll be revisiting: Michael McGuire, journalist and author, who wrote the "fiction" novel, Never A True Word, about the spin docotoring that goes on in State Parliament (and we've heard he now has a deal for a second book) Shane Yeend, an entrepreneur who has had the premier scream invective at his face over his expression of frustration with the government through a full page ad Tammy Franks MLC, who spoke to us about decriminalising sex work and who impressed us with her decent, level-headed approach to the political game This week, the SA Drink Of The Week is still the Penfolds Grange, which is now being used to poach pears. In 100 Weeks Ago, we hear from two guests, Mark Knight (Script Consultant and former Assistant Director) and Tess O'Flaherty (Producer, Actor, Assistant Director), who took us behind the scenes of the world of movie making in South Australia and Australia. And in the musical pilgrimage ... we'll go back to Days in ADL by DyspOra from episode 221. We also continue our experiment. Steve has falling in love with Jon Blake's podcast from FIVEaa, not only because it is funny but also because he finds Jon to be an enigma. Mike McGuire is the Vice President of Research in Gartner for Marketing Leaders which specializes in mobile marketing, guiding digital marketers on how context, community, location and time converge on a consumer's mobile device to change the relationship between customers, prospects and brands. He is responsible for the mobile marketing research agenda and also covers the online music segment specifically, digital distribution and also looks after Gartner’s coverage of legal and regulatory issues that affect media companies. Here are the highlights of our conversation with our guest: 01:12: As VP of Research, Mike enumerates the areas he focuses on in the mobile marketing agenda. This includes their marketing team’s dedication on mobile marketing research. In here, they zoom in on the breadth and depth of the tools and techniques which are important to mobile marketing. 02:55: Mike’s definition of how context, community, location and time are changing the relationship between the consumer and the brands. He also provides examples of how you can now do fine-grained distinctions from the cues derived from data gathered by mobile technology and change user experience leverage on this information. 06:46: With the massive push towards mobile, we discuss where a brand can start and how they can pull in contextual data to use for a certain return to justify investment. 13:51: If there is an opportunity for unique mobile engagement but a company that missed the boat in terms of being mobile first, should the company start with being mobile responsive/mobile friendly or invest more in mobile engagement? Mike devotes time in discussing why, since becoming a mobile responsive site isn’t a flip of a switch; the next big investment of a company should be towards being one. 21:09: The exciting things which Mike thinks are coming next including the extreme line of convenience which voice interfaces and the notion of virtual private assistants can possibly bring. We add in the positive and potential negative of VPAs and how it will affect brands and products.
