Leave No Trace. An idea that began in the 60's by forest rangers on how to have a minimal impact on the land, that we should leave an outdoor area that we have been in, traveling through or enjoying, clean and without a trace of our human presence. According, to Leave No Trace-Center for Outdoor Ethics, There are Seven Principles of Leave No Trace  and they can be applied anywhere — from remote wilderness areas, to local parks and even in your own backyard. Plan Ahead and prepare, travel and camp on durable surfaces only, dispose of your waste properly, leave what you find (natural objects and cultural artifacts), minimize campfire impact, respect wildlife and be considerate of others. I am sure you have driven down your street, other streets and highways, parking lots of stores and fast food restaurants and seen garbage strewn everywhere, evidence of human life everywhere. That is NOT leaving no trace, quite the opposite. A willful blindness to what we leave behind when we are done somewhere. Throwing your garbage out your car window? Someone else will pick it up for you? Well there are some awesome and generous humans (Restore the Shore and Craig Faunce Foundation) who do just that, we are going to hear about their groups, how we can support them and be inspired by them to also pitch in as we cannot rely on others to pick up after us. In episode 77 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, we discuss eco-anxiety. If you're someone that experiences anxiety regularly, then you may relate to this episode quite a lot. And while anxiety, in general, can come from a variety of places, eco-anxiety is defined as the “extreme worry about current and future harm to the environment caused by human activity and climate change.” I am not a psychologist, and neither is my guest; however, we are individuals who have experienced eco-anxiety and adopted ways to manage it in our daily lives. Because of our first-hand experience, we felt comfortable diving into this topic and sharing how it has impacted our lives. The information shared is not meant to diagnose or eliminate anxiety for listeners. If you are struggling with anxiety or other mental health concerns, we recommend seeking guidance from a therapist or other mental health professional. With that, I'd like to introduce today's guest: Margo Stoney. Margo is a Montana-based graphic designer and runs a design studio called High Mountain Creative. She helps conservation nonprofits and sustainable-minded brands increase their impact through visual storytelling. She's a small business member of the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and is a proud participant of the “Adopt-a-highway” litter pickup program in Montana. Here at Relish we try hard to adopt sustainable practices, recycle, and reuse as best we can. Generally speaking, we do our best to minimize the impact we have on the planet.I bring it up because I had a fun conversation today with Mark Eller, the Memberships, Major Gifts, and Foundations Director at Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics. Leave No Trace is easily one of my favorite organizations, because they teach people about interacting with our natural spaces with more care and consideration. Mark brings a ton of expertise to the table at Leave No Trace, having as he does a career steeped in communications AND marketing. So, as you might imagine, we talked a lot about these subjects. We both feel every nonprofit can benefit from understanding how Communications and Marketing intersect to tell stories that compel transactional relationships. One of the biggest takeaways from our conversation was about measuring success. Yes, it's important to use data to identify trends and information—but it's also important to pair your data with observations and watch people's behaviors. That will help you identify whether their actions match up with your organization's mission, so you can learn where you can better educate and train your stakeholders. Using anecdotal evidence paired with data makes for a stronger plan of action going forward. Check this one out. It's a ton of fun.LINK: lnt.orgASK: What could I do better the next time I go into our natural spaces? Be a steward with a protection ethic.

Their advice, stories and insights are many and that's why my conversation with them will stretch over two episodes. In this first episode we'll touch on a number of subjects such as how each of our guides grew to not just love the outdoors but see it as vital to the collective health and happiness of their families. We'll address the challenges of preparation and electronic devices. Over and over again, these Wonder Guides reinforce one main truth: getting outside and camping with their kids is liberating, inspiring and worth the effort.3 x 3 Main Street ChallengeIn our 3 x 3 Main Street Challenge we visit the lovely little town of Wheaton, Illinois. Starting at Five and Hoek Coffee at 112 N Main Street we just walk a couple of blocks to the expansive Illinois Prairie Path which goes for over 60 miles. Within 15-20 minutes one can be on another main street in Glen Ellyn and eating a cinnamon roll at the Blackberry Market at 401 N. Main Street. The 30 minute segment is solved quite easily by simply continuing along the wonderfully bucolic Prairie Path. What's within 3 hours of Wheaton? There's a LOT to choose from but today why don't we simply drive due west for under three hours to the mighty Mississippi River. Two places of note include the Wildcat Den State Park which has one of the oldest operating grist mills! Back across the river on the Illinois side is the Loud Thunder Forest Preserve which has more outdoor activities that I have time to list.In our Art Meets Nature segment, DJ Shark leads us into the beautiful, evocative and melancholy masterpiece The Green Green Grass of Home. Written by Claude "Curly" Putman Jr., but of course made world famous by Tom Jones.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytvcdSzzMds In There's No Planet B we look at the principles of Leave No Trace. In the crisis, innovation and deep meaning continue to emerge. And I’m honored to be able to facilitate conversations that are fueling collaboration and forward progress in our communities. I led a panel for the Outdoor Industry Association and the Snowsports Industries of America focusing on manufacturers pivoting to Personal Protective Equipment, to meet the insanely huge demand for front-line health-care professionals.    We had a huge amount of interest. Here’s the replay of the panel webinar that took place on April 13th. Leaders from brands including Chaco, DPS Skis, Outdoor Research, the Office of Outdoor Recreation for the State of North Carolina, participated.    There will be three new Channel Mastery episodes with the panelists. Let’s be honest - it’s impossible to learn all that’s possible from the five all-star panelists in a 45-minute panel or through 15 minutes of questions.    The first episode, #131 features Amy Allison, Director of the Office of Outdoor Recreation for the State of North Carolina, and Sarah Wood, the founder of The Good Talk business consultancy and of the very dynamic SupplyConnector. In this episode, you’ll learn about growing from local to national, the best way to start collaborating to shift to manufacturing PPE, and how to tap into a long-standing network, while concurrently building in-roads to a much bigger national network.    We will be offering two more podcasts in these COVID-19-oriented shows; the second will featuring Chaco and DPS Skis, and the third featuring Outdoor Research. Additional resources have been created by the team at Verde Brand Communications and can be found on the Verde Blog.   Sarah Wood is the owner and lead business guide at Good Talk, a business management firm based in Brevard, NC, and Grand Junction, CO. Sarah has 16 years of professional experience working across the country in roles such as VP of Operations at Industry Nine, creative services business owner in Nashville's music industry, executive director of 5Point Adventure Film Festival, and development officer for the American Alpine Club. Sarah brings a varied perspective to her leadership and a philanthropic lean to her work and travel. Sarah is the current Board Chairwoman for the North Carolina Outdoor Recreation Coalition, advisor for the Waypoint Accelerator Program and Venture Asheville, and co-founder of Supply Connector.   Amy Allison is the Director of the North Carolina Outdoor Recreation Industry Office.  Amy’s background and passion lies in the Outdoor Industry where she worked as the Director of Marketing for ENO, while also spearheading their initiatives for giving back to the global community, and was a founding member of the Outdoor Gear Builders organization in Western North Carolina.  For over 20 years, Amy has dedicated her energy and skills to connecting others to the outdoors. From directing pioneering experiential education programs with youth across the Southeast to living on the road all over the lower 48 as a national Traveling Trainer for the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, the strategy of integrating sustainability, conservation, education, and business has been the context of her career.

Leave No Trace In my circles, there’s been a lot of talk lately about photographing the places we love and how, sometimes, photographers can do way more damage to a beautiful spot than they might expect. I’m not one to keep my locations to myself, but I do want to take this opportunity to encourage listeners to be respectful of the land we have come to love so much. If we’re not careful we may end up trampling it to death. That’s where the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics comes in. They have created their Seven Principles to help outdoor enthusiasts like us to take stock of our plans and the effects we have on those around us and the effects we have on the land too. Please note these Seven Principles are © 1999 by the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics: www.LNT.org. Please? ;)   We're so close to double-digit episodes, we can taste it... and it tastes GOOD! In this episode, Brian refers to a recent experience he had with another photographer during a road trip to Grand Teton National Park. It promoted both hosts to talk about the etiquette—or, sometimes, lack thereof—that photographers should consider having. Being nice and paying it forward should just be a natural thing that good photographers, and people, do. This allows Sharky and Brian to segue to a story about a new addition to "Leave No Trace" principles while visiting natural locations with your camera. Nosh on that and then come back for a heaping portion of "What's on your gear shelf?" You'll feel full in no time.   Show Notes • Brian and Sharky share stories about photographers who treat every shoot like a competition and the act of helping another person out with information must be protected at all costs • Brian recounts a particularly frustrating story while visiting Mt. Ranier National Park with photographer, Matt Kloskowski. [visit mattk.com] • Sharky shares experiences from his photojournalism days and how some gigs were put in jeopardy because of others acting stupidly • The hosts use their stories as a means to introduce the 7 principles of the Leave No Trace Center [source] • A story was posted where an eighth principle has been proposed, urging people not to share photos from natural locations for fear of future damage [via GearJunkie]     What's On Your Gear Shelf?
