REFRESHER COURSE ON WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN THE 1930S IN THE LAND OF BACH AND MOZART: 3/8: Takeover: Hitler's Final Rise to Power Hardcover – Deckle Edge, by Timothy W. Ryback (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Takeover-Hitlers-Final-Rise-Power/dp/0593537424 From the internationally acclaimed author of Hitler's Private Library, a dramatic recounting of the six critical months before Adolf Hitler seized power, when the Nazi leader teetered between triumph and ruin In the summer of 1932, the Weimar Republic was on the verge of collapse. One in three Germans was unemployed. Violence was rampant. Hitler's National Socialists surged at the polls. Paul von Hindenburg, an aging war hero and avowed monarchist, was a reluctant president bound by oath to uphold the constitution. The November elections offered Hitler the prospect of a Reichstag majority and the path to political power. But instead, the Nazis lost two million votes. As membership hemorrhaged and financial backers withdrew, the Nazi Party threatened to fracture. Hitler talked of suicide. The New York Times declared he was finished. Okay it's been a few months since the last war Israel started, so now that Iran's on the chopping block let's go over the rules once again. Rule 1: Israel is never the aggressor. If Israel attacks someone it's either a response to an aggression that happened in the past, or a preemptive attack to thwart an imminent aggression in the future. Rule 2: History automatically restarts at the date of the last act of aggression against Israel. If someone attacks Israel it was completely unprovoked, because nothing happened before the attack on Israel. Rule 3: Anything bad that Israel does is justified by Rule 2. This is true even if it does things that would be considered completely unjustifiable if it were done by a nation like Russia or China. Rule 4: Israel has a right to defend itself, but nobody else does. Rule 5: Israel never bombs civilians, it bombs Bad Guys. If shocking numbers of civilians die it's because they were actually Bad Guys, or because Bad Guys killed them, or because a Bad Guy stood too close to them. If none of those reasons apply then it's for some other mysterious reason we are still waiting for the IDF to investigate. Rule 6: Criticizing anything Israel does means you hate Jewish people. There is no other possible reason for anyone to oppose acts of mass military slaughter besides a seething, obsessive hatred for a small Abrahamic faith. Rule 7: Nothing Israel does is ever as bad as the hateful criticisms described in Rule 6. Criticisms of Israel's actions are always worse than Israel's actions themselves, because those critics hate Jews and wish to commit another Holocaust. Preventing this must consume 100 percent of our political energy and attention. Rule 8: Israelis are only ever the victims and never the victimizers. If Israelis kill Iranians, it's because the Iranians hate Jews. If Iranians kill Israelis, it's because the Iranians hate Jews. Israel is an innocent little lamb that just wants to mind its own business in peace. Rule 9: The fact that Israel is literally always in a state of war with its neighbors and with displaced indigenous populations must be interpreted as proof that Rule 8 is true instead of proof that Rule 8 is ridiculous nonsense. Rule 10: The lives of people in Muslim nations are much, much less important to us than western lives or Israeli lives. Nobody is allowed to think too hard about why this might be. Rule 11: The media always tell the truth about Israel and its various conflicts. If you doubt this then you are likely in violation of Rule 6. Rule 12: Unsubstantiated claims which portray Israel's enemies in a negative light may be reported as factual news stories without any fact checking or qualifications, while extensively evidenced records of Israeli criminality must be reported on with extreme skepticism and doubtful qualifiers like “Iran claims”, “Hezbollah says” or “according to the Hamas-run health ministry”. This is important to do because otherwise you might get accused of being a propagandist. Rule 13: Israel must continue to exist in its current iteration no matter what it costs or how many people need to die. There is no need to present any logically or morally grounded reasons why this is the case. If you dispute this then you are likely in violation of Rule 6. Rule 14: The US government has never lied about anything ever, and is always on the right side of every conflict. Rule 15: Israel is the last bastion of freedom and democracy in the middle east and therefore must be defended, no matter how many journalists it has to assassinate, no matter how many press institutions it needs to shut down, no matter how many protests its supporters need to dismantle, no matter how much free speech it needs to eliminate, no matter how many civil rights its western backers need to erase, and no matter how many elections its lobbyists need to buy. In the age of right-click and repost, it's easy to forget that every image on the internet was created by someone -someone who owns the rights to it. Whether you're a photographer, a content creator, or just someone who loves to share pretty pictures, it's crucial to understand copyright and intellectual property laws. Photographers retain the rights to their work the moment they hit the shutter. That means just because an image is posted online doesn't make it fair game for memes, marketing, or mood boards. Using someone else's work without permission (or proper credit, or payment!) is not just bad etiquette - it's potentially illegal. Respecting copyright isn't about limiting creativity - it's about protecting it. So before you grab that perfect photo for your project, take a moment to ask: Do I have permission to use this? If not, reach out, license it properly, or create something of your own. Because being respectful of others' work helps protect your own too. With voting now underway for the 2025 federal election, we take a look at the legislative and constitutional requirements governing our electoral processes, the quirks of the Australian system, and what – apart from the beloved “democracy sausage” – makes the Australian way special. In this episode of The Lawyers Weekly Show, host Jerome Doraisamy speaks with Professor Donald Rothwell of the Australian National University about his work in international law, how our electoral system came to be at the time of Federation, the advantage for the incumbent prime minister of the day, major changes we've seen to our electoral laws, and how Australia ended up with a preferential voting system. Professor Rothwell also reflects on whether our current legislative and constitutional frameworks are fit for purpose with our elections, the appetite or otherwise for reform, the recent saga of MPs who were dual nationals, whether job-sharing MPs will be a thing of the future, the laws and processes governing minority government, whether such governments are truly representative of our democracy, and other interesting and quirky features of our system. Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation
No Flat WritingA lot of writers will worry that their stories seem flat. There's a reason that they are worrying about that and it's one of the core elements of good writing.Ready?A lot of the times your story seems flat because all your sentences are the same layout. You want to vary your sentence structure.Take a bit of writing that you've done that feels flat—or maybe even one that doesn't. Count the words in your sentences for two or three paragraphs. Are they all five word sentences? Twelve? Twenty-seven?That robotic sameness in sentence length is one of the main reasons that writing can feel flat. It's like those ancient Dick and Jane books.See Dick run. See Jane skip. See Dick wave. The other big bugger is when all of your sentences are simple and declarative.I walk to the forest. The trees are gracious, tall. I inhale the pine scent. There is actually a whole, entire world of different sentence styles that writers can use and when you use them? That's when you make your writing shiny and sexy and all the good things. The names for these structures are pretty boring, honestly, but we'll try to look beyond that, right?Simple – You have one main clause.Carrie is the best wife.Compound – You have more than one independent clause. You probably use a conjunction.Carrie wants to get another dog, but Shaun keeps saying no.Complex – Oh, the sentence that probably has to pay for a therapist or is reading Foucault obviously in the park. This sentence has an independent clause and a subordinate clause. When hell freezes over, we will allegedly get another dog.Compound-Complex – It sounds like a place with a cult, right? But it's just a sentence with at least two independent clauses and one subordinate clause.Carrie really needs a new dog to love, so Shaun said that they would get one when hell freezes over, so Carrie immediately purchased some dry ice at WalMart and sent some down to Lucifer. So, to keep your writing from feeling flat, you want to vary those sentences. Why?It keeps the reader engaged. It helps highlight important details. It helps vary tone. It puts emphasis on things (especially when you use a short sentence for that). It sounds more real. People don't speak in identical sentence patterns. When they do, just like in your writing, it feels unnatural and stilted. It can be easier to follow when you change your sentence structure up.How do you vary the structure?Use different lengths, like we mentioned above Use different types of sentences like we also mentioned above. Throw in that complex sentence in the middle of all your simple sentences. Don't start all your sentences the same (the way I did up there).Refresher moments:What's a clause? A bunch of words chilling out together and one of those words in the group is a verb and another is a noun. Fancy people call the verb, the predicate, but we aren't fancy here. What's an independent clause? It is a bunch of words that has a subject and a predicate. Got fancy! It is grammatically complete all by itself and doesn't need anyone. Not any other words to stand alone! Darn it.What's a subordinate or dependent clause? A bunch of words that needs other words to be a sentence. This poor beautiful baby cannot stand alone and be complete, kind of like a protagonist in a Hallmark romance.DOG TIP FOR LIFE!Vary how you bark to your humans. Sometimes go ‘bark bark.' Sometimes go ‘barkwoofbarhbark.' Keep them on their toes.RANDOM THOUGHTOur random thought came from here.SHOUT OUT!The music we've clipped and shortened in this podcast is awesome and is made available through the Creative Commons License. Here's a link to that and the artist's website. Who is this artist and what is this song? It's “Summer Spliff” by Broke For Free.WE HAVE EXTRA CONTENT ALL ABOUT LIVING HAPPY OVER HERE! It's pretty awesome. We have a podcast, LOVING THE STRANGE, which we stream biweekly live on Carrie's Facebook and Twitter and YouTube on Fridays. Welcome to the final step in our Getting Unstuck journey—Step 5!Over the past few episodes, we've explored powerful tools for navigating your inner world and creating real change. In this week's episode "What Are Feelings and How to TRULY Let Go," we bring it all together. Now, it's time to take action with a step-by-step homework assignment that ties it all together: Your Homework for the Whole Series:Pick a Small, Measurable Goal: Choose something you've been procrastinating or feeling stuck about—something specific and achievable.Notice Your Thoughts, Feelings, and Sensations: As you take steps toward this goal, observe the passengers on your “bus”—those thoughts, feelings, and urges that try to hold you back.Label and Accept Them with Kindness: Write them down. Say, “I notice the thought that…” or “I notice the feeling of…” and respond with, “And that's okay.”Find the Feeling in Your Body: Where does it show up? What does it feel like? Make space for it by imagining opening windows and letting it be.Ask Yourself, “What's One Thing I Can Do?” Instead of battling the emotions, shift your focus to what you can do. Take one small action to move forward. Pro Tip: Repeat this process daily or whenever you feel stuck. With practice, you'll notice the resistance quieting down and a sense of freedom emerging. Need a Refresher? You can find here the whole series episodes. [https://apple.co/40HyHQx]The power of transformation lies in action, and I can't wait to hear how this process works for you. Share your progress with me —I'd love to celebrate your wins and answer any questions. Here's to leaving “stuck” behind and stepping into a life of clarity, purpose, and freedom!

Air Date 11/15/2024 Today's episode is a remix of multiple past episodes but was inspired by one in particular from just back in July of this year, #1645, when we were making a point of demonstrating what a sham the idea of conservative economic populism is. Well, now that Trump has been reelected - seemingly because regular folks were hoping he'd fix the economy for them - we thought we'd take this moment to highlight the difference between right wing and left wing economic populism.
