Occoquan Bible Church | Sermon Podcast

"I will never leave you, nor forsake you."These are some of the most comforting words in the Bible. They were first spoken to Joshua and later applied to all those who trust in Jesus Christ, the greater Joshua (Heb. 13:6). And they are very similar to words we find in John 14:18, "I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you." Together, these verses are ones we should commit to memory or meditate on with regularity.Still, a question should be asked: How do we know that these words are true? Have not all of us faced relationships where the promiser broke his word? Have we not experienced times with God when it felt like his promise was uncertain? Or that his plans led to greater harm than good?Indeed, experience is wonderful teacher, but a terrible master. And yet, we are prone to trust our experiences more than God's promise. And when that happens, we lose all manner of peace and the knowledge of God's love. This Sunday we will address this very thing and as we look at Jon 14:15–31. In the second half of this chapter, we will see how the Son's unbreakable union with the Father is the foundation of the promise of God's unbreakable grace to us—that is, to those who trust him and believe his Word.To prepare for Sunday, take time to read John 14. It is filled with God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. From our triune Creator, we find a message of sustaining grace and love. And on Sunday, we will dive into this glorious chapter. Pray for our time in the Word and for those who join us.**Last Sunday, we had the added joy of an 70 people — at least by comparison to the previous week. This reminds us all to look for ways to keep open seats “open,” and hospitality as a gracious priority.**In all, let us look with anticipation to gathering for worship on Sunday and remembering why we can trust God and his unbreakable promise of love and peace. As the Lord allows, I hope to see you on Sunday. For God's glory and your joy in Christ,Pastor David--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Discussion & Response Questions for John 14:15-31Jesus continues to teach about his departure. What does he emphasize in this section of teaching? What are the three sections of John 14:15–31? How does seeing this arrangement help make sense of these verses?Across these three sections, love is a key theme. What do we learn about loving Jesus? (See v. 15, 21, 23-24, 28).How does Jesus comfort their troubled hearts again? (See v. 27, and look back to v. 1).What does Jesus reveal about the Holy Spirit? How do they know him?As Jesus speaks about his departure, what does he promise to the disciples? What distinctions does Jesus draw between the world and his disciples? What role does the Word play in this distinction? What important differences should we note between the Father and Son's unity, and the union that is shared between Jesus' disciples and himself? How can we avoid error when speaking about God? (Hint: All language about God is analogical).Who will send the Spirit? Why will the Spirit be sent? What will the Spirit do?What is Jesus seeking to accomplish in his disciples by this instruction? How ought we to respond to these truths?

Ever wondered why a scent or certain food triggers a memory  of something that happened long ago? Well, that's the hippocampus in play AKA Memory Storage Command Center. The hippocampus stores things like spatial memories (surroundings & environment) as well as declarative memories (facts & events). An example of declarative memories are things learned in school!Memory consolidation happens while we sleep. The hippocampus moves memories to long-term storage. That's why we need that 7½ hours of sleep as an adult (9 to 12 for kids). Skimp on your sleep, and you skimp on the possibility of memories sinking into storage. So, if kids don't get enough sleep, it's hard for them to recall what they learned. Long term exposure to stress leads to more deterioration of the hippocampus. People suffering from PTSD have a smaller hippocampal volume compared to others. For our kiddos, the longer a child is exposed to an abusive environment, the more damage their hippocampus takes. Their ability to learn is significantly reduced. That's why Lauren's focus is getting schools to check for the 5 Needs Areas first. Lauren answers this week's listener question during the episode: How to understand where a behavior is coming from. (Hint: All behaviors communicate something, for both kids and adults.) Try-at-home tip:  Ways to neutralize your nervous system: Sauna  Other related resources from The Behavior Hub: Blog Post: Your Brain's Memory Storage Command Center5 Reasons Behaviors OccurEmotional Brain: The Barking DogPodcast:Why Behaviors Occur - The 5 Needs AreasOur Online Courses: From Wild Emotions to Tamed Feelings – How to Self-Regulate (5 Needs Areas) Do you have a question? Steve Wagner – All You Need Is Myth – Can the “Soundtrack of Our Time” Help Us Heal the Shadow and See the Light?Aired Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM ESTInterview with Music Mythologist Steve Wagner, author of “All You Need Is Myth: The Beatles and the Gods of Rock”“Of course love is more powerful than fear. Otherwise we’d be singing ‘All You Need is Fear.” — Swami BeyondanandaIn his study of “spontaneous remission,” Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona suggested that these unexplained anomalous healings were often accompanied by what he called a “change of story.” Given the dire “shituation” we as a civilization, a species and a world find ourselves in, maybe we need a collective change of story, a “spontaneous remissioning” so to speak. So … where might we go to find such a story?Hint: All you need is love. Our guest this week, “music mythologist” Steve Wagner offers an interesting and compelling thesis: That during the latter half of the 20th century, mythology “came alive” as the ancient archetypes cited by Joseph Campbell emerged through the Beatles, and other rock icons like the Stones, Elvis, Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Jim Morrison, the Who, and Brian Wilson.Unlike ancient and traditional mythologies, based on story and faith, here were real flesh-and-blood contemporaries who brought these archetypes to life, and gave us purpose and meaning. Consider that Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign song was Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow.” (I suppose if the current administration had to pick a Fleetwood Mac theme, it would have to be “Tell Me Lies”, right?)Mythology – from Greek to Nordic to Celtic to Indigenous – has always provided a stage for darkness and light to dance together. Can the modern mythos of rock culture help us shine a light on the current darkness?Join us and find out!Steve Wagner is a veteran San Francisco media personality, and member of the San Francisco Film Critic’s Circle. He was co-host, writer, and executive producer of the Bay Area television programs Reel Life and Filmtrip, reviewing over 1,000 films and interviewing over 300 actors, directors, writers, and musicians. In the 1980s, he was singer and guitarist of the Backsliders, a touring rock band that performed over eight hundred shows and opened for numerous national acts. For a decade, Steve Wagner was a director of the San Francisco Art Exchange, a gallery specializing in rock & roll photography and original album cover art. He brokered sales of many of the world’s most famous album cover original artworks, including Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon.Steve Wagner has ghostwritten or collaborated on several published books, contributed articles on music, film, and popular culture to numerous publications, and presented lectures and workshops on music, art, and mythology in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, and Boston. His book All You Need is Myth: The Beatles and Gods of Rock (Waterside, 2019), a study of the classic rock era through the lens of classical mythology, is the product of ten years of research and composition. If you’re curious how the Beatles and other “Gods of Rock” brought ancient mythology to life – and how this living mythology can inform our purpose in challenging times, please tune in this Tuesday, February 11th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET. http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/To find out more about All You Need Is Myth, please go here: http://allyouneedismyth.com/And now that we ARE back with new shows (and planning a Zoom video element after the first of the year), we invite you to help support Wiki Politiki and our mission to bring about “the great upwising” and functional politics!
