On Friday, June 5th, Brendan Banfield was sentenced to life in prison without parole for orchestrating an elaborate plot to murder his wife, Christine Banfield, while carrying on an affair with the family's au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães. The scheme involved luring an unsuspecting man, Joseph Ryan, to the Banfield home and attempting to frame him for the crime.‘48 Hours' correspondent Anne-Marie Green and ‘48 Hours' producer Michelle Sigona share the most passionate moments from victim impact statements. You'll also hear from Brendan Banfield in court as he maintained his innocence.
Au pair travel comes up in the groups every single week, and it's usually a horror story. The awkward silences, the au pair completely checked out, the vacation that didn't feel like a vacation.I did this episode because I think a lot of that drama is avoidable, and I want to share how we do it.But before you book that extra ticket, you need to answer a few questions honestly. Is this a trip or a vacation?Do you actually want childcare, or do you just feel like you should bring them? And do you know this person well enough to travel with them at all?I'm breaking down exactly how my family handles travel with an au pair: From setting work expectations before you leave, to giving dedicated time off so your au pair can go explore, to the seating arrangement on the plane that changed everything. (Yes, I'm going to tell you to go sit somewhere else. Trust me on this one.)This one is practical and direct, and it's full of the kind of clarity that makes the difference between a vacation and a very expensive, very stressful trip.In this episode:Vacation vs. trip; and why that distinction matters before anything elseWhen to bring your au pair and when to leave them home (both are valid)How to communicate work hours, flexible schedules, and travel days upfrontWhy dedicated time off during a work trip benefits everyoneThe plane seating arrangement I swear byYou worked hard for this vacation. I admire and respect Richard Jobson's contributions to the arts and civic life enormously. From where I sit, there's a fearlessness and determination to evolve, to try new things, to experiment, to challenge the sometimes narrow, traditional notions of what it means to be artistic, to resist those whose purpose in life is to sit in judgement and to redefine success and failure with more comradeship and less derision. To me, it's clear that his respect for the past is genuine and forthright, yet the present and the future have always been where the opportunities lie for a fulfilling life.My opinion was cemented having been able to spend some time around him when the Au Pairs recently supported The Skids on their Absolute Game tour. I have to say a massive thank you to Richard, The Skids and Paul Aspey for their welcome, friendship and professionalism from the off. It's pretty wild to think that when The Skids, one of the cohorts of the early punk scene that remains hugely influential, broke up he was just 21 years old. This is such a great chat to try and delve into how Richard has navigated through the world.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. Deb Googe and Cara Tivey join Mark Millar on the XS Noize Podcast to discuss The Golden Thread — their debut full-length album together as da Googie + Cara Tivey. da Googie is the solo project of Deb Googe, best known as the bass player in My Bloody Valentine and Thurston Moore Group. Cara Tivey is a pianist and composer whose career includes work with Billy Bragg, Everything But The Girl, Blur, Au Pairs and The Lilac Time. In this episode, Deb and Cara talk about bringing The Golden Thread to Belfast as part of the Oh Yeah Presents immersive series, where the music becomes visual as well as sonic. They discuss how the collaboration began, how Cara's piano changed the shape of da Googie, and how improvised pieces were reshaped into finished songs. They also reflect on creative ownership after decades of working inside other people's music, the challenge of performing the material live, the physical force of My Bloody Valentine, women in alternative music, and why there is no grand master plan for what comes next. For the Belfast performance, The Golden Thread will be presented as an immersive live event at the Oh Yeah Centre, co-produced by Oh Yeah Presents and CQAF.

I only met Jem Doulton a couple of months ago and have had the privilege of watching him play several times with the Au Pairs whilst they've been out on tour supporting the Skids and also doing their own headline shows. Jem's predominantly a percussionist and drummer, but is also partial to the odd bit of crooning now and again. Now, getting together a list of his bands, projects and all that good stuff is where my research gets dodgy, but fuck it here we go with what's probably a partial list: Thurston Moore, The Au Pairs obviously, Heckle Chamber, Grimm Grimm, The DNA Test, Melos Kalpa, Pando Pando to name but a few - I thought putting out a podcast once a week was pretty prolific, so that'll teach me - as well as recording a bunch of solo records, the latter of which was 2024's hugely imaginative and kaleidoscopic Deal of The Century. I think the collaborators on these releases shows the esteem in which Jem is held as a musician and person. So here's the interesting change in music at least from where I sit – multiple collaborations – if you want to call it that - have become perhaps the default way to be a musician these days - it's way more common to find musicians working on several projects – and often diverse projects. I don't know if this self-development buzzword “multi-hyphenate” - as it applies to doing a few different things in addition to your core job - originated from the music biz but whatever, it feels like this profile is a proper feature of the way that many, many more of us are living now.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. Brendan and Christine Banfield had been together for nineteen years. They dated for many years, got married, and had a daughter named Valerie. The family was living in Herndon, Virginia, and because of their busy schedules they decided to hire a nanny. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss what has been called "The Au Pair Murders" by the press. On the morning of February 24th, 2023, Juliana Magalhaes, the au pair, and Brendan Banfield called 911. They claimed they found Brendan's wife, Christine, and that she had been attacked by an intruder who turned out to be a man named Joseph Ryan. Both Joseph and Christine were dead, but the authorities thought that the story told by Brendan and Juliana sounded suspicious. You can help support the show through Patreon. "It's easier to fall in love with someone that saved you." Those were the words of Brendan Banfield as he attempted to explain away an affair, a dead wife, and a dead stranger to a jury of twelve. In Part 2 of our deep dive into the VA v. Brendan Banfield trial, we move past the "catfish" plot and into the courtroom moments that sealed the defendant's fate. In this episode, we discuss: Brendan's Performance: Was he a grieving husband or a cold-blooded manipulator? We analyze his claims that Christine could speak after seven stab wounds to the neck. The Forensic "Gotcha": Why the defense's own digital investigator became the prosecution's best witness during cross-examination. The Fatal Flaw: The specific pattern of FetLife logins that proved "Anastasia 9" only existed when Brendan or Juliana were home. The Rebuttal: How a brief testimony from Brendan's supervisor, T. Smith Patrick, turned a "work meeting" alibi into a documented lie. Closure: The sentencing of Juliana Magalhães and what this case says about the "Double Murder" plot that nearly worked. On a quiet February morning in an upscale Virginia suburb, a 911 call shattered the quiet. An au pair reported an intruder. A federal agent said he fired his weapon to protect his family. Prosecutors wanted her released. The judge refused.Juliana Peres Magalhães, the Brazilian au pair who confessed to helping Brendan Banfield execute a double murder, was sentenced Friday to ten years in prison — the maximum available under her plea agreement. Judge Penney Azcarate rejected the Commonwealth's recommendation of time served, delivering a ruling that sends a clear message about the limits of cooperation."Your actions were deliberate, self-serving, and demonstrated a profound disregard for human life," Azcarate said. "You do not deserve anything other than incarceration and a life of reflection on what you have done."Juliana's testimony was essential to convicting Brendan Banfield on two counts of aggravated murder. Her attorney argued that without her cooperation, prosecutors had only circumstantial evidence. But the judge made clear that being the star witness doesn't mean avoiding accountability — not when you helped plan the murder, lured the victim to his death, and fired the kill shot into a man already lying wounded on the floor."The plan did not work without your full involvement," Azcarate said. "This could have been a very different ending where Juliana saved two lives."The courtroom heard from Joe Ryan's mother, Deirdre Fisher, who described losing her son — the man Juliana helped lure to his death through a fake fetish profile. Fisher still hasn't taken down her Christmas tree since the murder. It stands behind the urn holding her son's ashes."My son's life was used and thrown away, seen as worthless and utterly disposable by those who plotted and executed his brutal murder."Despite the ten-year sentence, Juliana's attorney says she'll serve approximately four years with credit for time served and good behavior. The judge in the au pair affair murder trial went against the prosecution and its star witness, sentencing Au pair Juliana Maghaleas to 10 years in prison. Maghaleas testified against her former boss and lover, Brendan Banfield, securing his conviction, thinking she was securing her freedom. The judge had other plans, and some harsh words for the 25 year old, telling her she should spend the rest of her life in prison for the murder of Joe Ryan. Amy and T.J. discuss one of the most elaborate and unthinkable murder cases they’ve ever covered with criminal defense attorney extraordinaire Alison Treissl. 40-year-old former IRS agent Brandon Banfield was found guilty this week of killing his wife Christine and a stranger he lured to his home, Joe Ryan. While Amy and T.J. thought the defense raised some reasonable doubt with two experts from the police department, Treissl pointed out all of the problems with Brendan Banfield’s testimony and why she and the jury just didn’t believe him. Two very different closing arguments in the double murder trial of Brendan Banfield. The defense ended strong, poking holes in the au pair’s testimony, saying none of it can be trusted, first because she has every incentive to cooperate with the prosecution and second, because the digital forensics don’t support the au pair’s and prosecution’s catfishing narrative. The prosecution sped though their closing, going through the evidence they presented, point by point, finishing in less than 20 minutes. There was no storytelling and little emotion, and ended with this conclusion: either you believe the au pair or you believe Brendan Banfield. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In Virginia, Brendan Banfield, the man accused of murdering his wife and a complete stranger, says the prosecution's theory is "absolutely crazy." In Georgia, law student Tara Baker's murder went unsolved for two decades, until the family teamed up with a podcaster to try and solve her murder. Her alleged killer is now heading to trial. Amy and T.J. go over the explosive, direct testimony of Brendan Banfield today. This morning we got to hear for the very first time, Banfield’s version of how his wife Christine and a stranger, Joe Ryan died in his master bedroom. Prosecutors say Banfield, along with this lover and family’s au pair lured Ryan to the home to kill and frame for his wife’s murder. Banfield had a MUCH different narrative, pointing the finger directly at Joe Ryan.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Both the defense and the prosecution have finished calling their final witnesses, and what a day in court! The cross examination of accused double murderer Brendan Banfield, along with the defense rebuttal, exposed some uncomfortable testimony. Banfield alleged his now deceased wife Christine had more than one BDSM affair and an obsession with sexual assault. Meantime the prosecution tried to score points with its rebuttal witnesses, including Banfield’s former manager. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
One of the most riveting days in court so far, as double murder defendant Brendan Banfield took the stand in his own defense. The 40 year old former IRS agent testified about his marriage, his multiple affairs, and said the notion that he would plan to kill his wife after a 6-8 week relationship with the family au pair “absolutely crazy.” Amy and T.J. discuss the major inroads the defense made today and what they think of Banfield’s testimony.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It wasn't the day the judge hoped for in the Brendan Banfield double murder trial. In anticipation of the winter storm, the judge pushed attorney to wrap testimony by Friday (yesterday), but they didn't even get close. However, the defense began scoring some major points, poking significant holes in the prosecution’s catfishing theory, central to their case. But all eyes are on the defendant himself, Brendan Banfield, who is expected to take the stand next week as the final witness for the defense. For the jury, it may ultimately come down to who they believe: the au pair or Brendan Banfield.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
What a helluva day in court! The defense attorney for accused double murderer Brendan Banfield scored major points today, calling two forensic digital experts with the Fairfax Police Department up to the stand who refuted the state’s catfishing theory. The two testified Brendan’s wife Christine had control of her devices, making it impossible for Brendan or the au pair to have created the online fetish profile that led to the murders. Later this afternoon, we are also expecting the biggest bombshell of this trial: Brendan Banfield will testify in his own defense.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
