Fourteen counts. Not guilty on every single one. Twenty-one years later, Netflix has reopened the case — and one of Michael Jackson's own defense witnesses is about to change his story. In June 2005, Michael Jackson walked out of a Santa Barbara courtroom acquitted of all 14 child sexual abuse charges. Netflix's new three-part docuseries "The Verdict" revisits that 2005 trial, and in Part 1 Tyrella and Nikita break it down episode by episode — the Martin Bashir interview that started it all, the raid on Neverland, and the fingerprint evidence at the center of the case. We also get into what the documentary left out: the surprise witness who blew up the "captivity" story, and the "neutral" family friend with an undisclosed tie to the prosecution. This is Part 1. Part 2 — who flipped, and where the estate stands in 2026 — drops Thursday (out now for patrons). Content warning: discusses child sexual abuse allegations, grooming testimony, and substance use. The hyperbaric chamber. The Elephant Man's bones. A baby dangled off a balcony in Berlin. One by one, the story of the greatest entertainer who ever lived began to curdle into something else entirely. Then came the allegations.A dentist who drugged his own kid to get a confession. A $20 million demand to stay quiet. A 2003 documentary that aired to 48 million people and changed everything. A trial with 14 counts, a circus outside the courthouse, and a jury that came back not guilty — on every single one.And then, four years later, a rented mansion in Holmby Hills. Michael Jackson walked out of a California courthouse a free man. Then he left the country. Then he never set foot in Neverland again. Whatever the verdict meant legally, it cost him something no jury could return. This episode is the 2005 criminal trial in full. The Martin Bashir documentary where Jackson held a boy's hand on camera and told the world that sharing his bed with children wasn't sexual. The charges that followed. The teenage cancer survivor who testified Jackson abused him. The prosecution's pattern witnesses who described behavior stretching back a decade. And the defense's systematic demolition of the accuser's family — a mother who'd lied under oath, committed welfare fraud, and alienated the jury so completely that one juror called her a scam artist. Then there are the defense witnesses who matter beyond this trial. Macaulay Culkin said nothing happened. Wade Robson said nothing happened — under oath, clearly, convincingly. Robson's testimony helped acquit Jackson. And then Robson reversed everything. That reversal is the next episode. But this one matters because the acquittal is the most misunderstood moment in this entire saga. Not guilty is a legal determination. Some jurors believed Jackson probably did abuse children. They just couldn't convict on this case, with this family, under this burden of proof.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? RHLSTP Book Club #164 - Dianarama - Richard chats to journalist and documentary maker Andy Webb about his exhaustively researched (and lived) book Dianarama which is about the Martin Bashir interview with Princess Diana and the lies and subterfuge that were required to get it and the alleged cover up at the BBC that followed. How much did the BBC bosses know and how soon? Why hasn't it been properly investigated at the Beeb? Was Bashir's exploitation of Diana's understandable fears at least partly responsible for her death? Why did the BBC give Bashir a cushy job as late as 2016 when he had already been discredited? What has driven Andy to commit so much time to trying to get to the bottom of it all and why has he met such a wall of resistance? Does Richard's attendance at St Catherine's College Oxford mean that he might be involved somehow? Where does mad conspiracy theory end and cover up begin? Maybe only the historians of 500 years time will be able to put all the pieces together, but maybe Prince William will be able to make some headway into the weird goings on in the 1990s and the dodgy behaviour at the BBC.Buy the book here - https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/dianarama-the-betrayal-of-princess-diana-andy-webb/02f9cfa4523783c7SUPPORT THE SHOW!See details of the RHLSTP LIVE DATES Watch our TWITCH CHANNELBecome a badger and see extra content at our WEBSITE Buy DVDs and books from GO FASTER STRIPE Hosted on Acast. In this second part of Phil's conversation with investigative writer Andy Webb, they explore perhaps the most troubling part of this saga - a BBC cover up that involved some of the most senior figures in British broadcasting and which kept the truth about this interview hidden for almost 30 years. It's a story that reflects very badly on the BBC and the UK ‘establishment', in which brave whistle blowers are punished, time serving hacks are promoted and Diana herself goes to her grave not knowing that she had been told numerous false stories about those closest to her. Andy even believes that her life may have been saved had she been told the truth in time. When Diana, Princess of Wales sat down with BBC Panorama reporter Martin Bashir in November 1995 she shook the British monarchy and changed the course of her own life.Bashir obtained this interview by - allegedly - using forged bank statements and telling Diana a series of lurid stories about her husband getting their nanny pregnant, plans to have her killed, the imminent death of the Queen and the bribery of her key staff. Allegations about how this interview was secured triggered a crisis inside the BBC, a long cover up, a judge led inquiry and then - finally - an unprecedented BBC apology along with compensation payments to the many people damaged along the way. These include whistle-blowing BBC journalists and Diana's own Private Secretary, Patrick Jephson. Writer Andy Webb has spent decades investigating this story and is the main reason it ever came to public knowledge. Were the consequences more devastating than anyone imagined? Webb explores the shocking possibility that without that interview, Diana might be alive today, living quietly as a grandmother at 64. We dig into the biggest unanswered questions: - Who was Martin Bashir—and how did he get so close to Diana and Michael Jackson? - How did forged bank statements open the gates of Kensington Palace? - What was Diana told that terrified her into believing people at the highest levels wanted her dead? - Why did she record what was essentially her “last will and testament”? - How did a bodyguard she cared about die only months after their relationship? - What did the BBC know—and when did they know it? - Why did the corporation spend over £1 million of licence fee money to stop Webb's investigations? Andy Webb reveals how Diana felt duped, hoaxed, and frightened, how rumours involving Tiggy Legge-Bourke spiralled out of control, and how the BBC's internal decisions continue to raise questions about accountability, leadership, and the culture that allowed Bashir's behavior to go unchecked. If you want to understand the real story behind the Bashir scandal, the BBC cover-up, and the chain of events that reshaped the Royal Family forever, this is the episode you can't miss. #PrincessDiana #MartinBashir #BBCScandal  Join the 30k heretics on my mailing list: https://andrewgoldheretics.com  Check out my new documentary channel: https://youtube.com/@andrewgoldinvestigates  Andrew on X: https://twitter.com/andrewgold_ok   Insta: https://www.instagram.com/andrewgold_ok Heretics YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@andrewgoldheretics Learn more about your ad choices. She explains how teams sometimes behave as if “if you don't agree with me, you're not just wrong but bad and evil”. Andrew and Camilla revisit the leaked internal memos that changed the conversation around BBC neutrality, and why critics argue that the organisation often reacts to scrutiny with “silence, shame and cancellation instead of reflection”. Some who oppose Camilla's reporting have claimed, and these are not her words, that “this is a Telegraph right wing plot to destabilise the BBC”. The episode breaks down where these accusations come from and why they persist. They take a close look at the BBC Trump documentary controversy and ask whether the public reaction would have been the same if the editing had been applied to Joe Biden. Camilla suggests that instead of “crying mutiny and coup”, the broadcaster should examine the substance of what is being alleged. The conversation also covers gender politics and public activism. Camilla notes how she does not see right wing commentators wearing masks and shouting “out, out, out, scum, scum, scum” in the streets, while Andrew adds his own satirical “Raus!” as they explore how toxic the culture wars have become. This wide-ranging interview touches on BBC leadership under Tim Davie, public debate around immigration, and why many viewers privately agree with opinions they feel unable to express publicly. The discussion ends with questions about Nigel Farage, whether Tommy Robinson could ever run for office, and a humorous look at Andrew's own baptism. If you are interested in media bias, political journalism, free speech, British culture wars and the future of the BBC, this is a deep dive into one of the most important debates in modern broadcasting. #CamillaTominey #BBCBias #HereticsPodcast  Join the 30k heretics on my mailing list: https://andrewgoldheretics.com  Check out my new documentary channel: https://youtube.com/@andrewgoldinvestigates  Andrew on X: https://twitter.com/andrewgold_ok   Insta: https://www.instagram.com/andrewgold_ok Heretics YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@andrewgoldheretics Learn more about your ad choices. Journalist, Andy Webb, is the author of a new book, Dianarama, which explores in detail how that interview happened and the consequences for all involved. Twenty five years later the BBC was forced to commission what they describe as a 'robust independent inquiry' from Lord Dyson. Introduction: Minutes 0 to 4:00 I saw Twisters. It was more of a rental, but I liked Glen Powell in it. Chandra is looking forward to the Olympics, particularly the tennis. I've been watching 48 Hours episodes on YouTube.  Chandra likes watching Snapped with her mom. Politics: Minutes 4:00 to 18:00 Last week when we talked Biden was still in the race although there were calls for him to step down. We also heard he has covid. Some of the top democratic brass were calling for Biden to step down, including Pelosi and Obama. Biden submitted his resignation on Sunday, July 21. In his announcement he endorsed Kamala Harris. This was not what the people asking for him to step down had planned for. They wanted an open convention and voting, which would have led to chaos. The Democratic party lined up behind Kamala and by late Monday night she had enough delegates to secure the party's nomination. She raised a record $100 million in just two days after Biden stepped down. She also got endorsements from so many people, including the Clintons, Nancy Pelosi, all the major democratic governors and many congresspeople. As of our recording on Thursday, July 25th at 2pm Eastern time, Barack Obama had not yet endorsed Kamala Harris. (He has since endorsed her, as I mentioned in an update.) We like how the Clintons supported Biden and endorsed Harris quickly. There's a groundswell of support for Harris. We both gave money to her campaign. We appreciate how enthusiastically Biden endorsed Harris. The tagline “We're not going back” is so good. Trump is thinking of dumping Vance as his running mate. We doubt that they even vetted Vance. Vance has a long history of saying terrible sh-t. One of the big stories this week was when people brought back comments Vance made in 2021-22 about “childless cat ladies” who are running the Democratic party. Jennifer Aniston clapped back at that. We wonder when Taylor Swift will endorse Harris. Royals: Minutes 18:00 to 25:45 This week the big news is that the Invictus Games are going to be in Birmingham in 2027. At lot of us were shocked because it seems so unsafe for Harry and Meghan to go back to the UK. There are three years until that happens and it seems premature to speculate about it. I play a segment from Zoom where we talk about the royals. We hope they have great security in Birmingham. Chandra hopes Meghan will never go back there but I think she'll go to support Harry. Prince Harry was interviewed as part of the ITV documentary, Tabloids on Trial, which aired this week. He talked about the press portraying his mother as paranoid when she was being hacked. His own brother called their mother paranoid in his 2021 statement on the Dyson investigation into Martin Bashir's interview with Diana. We talked about that in episode 130. I play a segment from Harry's interview. Harry is so diplomatic and explains what happened to him so well. We hope that he knows that his family is behind the press attacks on him. Comments of the Week: Minutes 25:45 to end Kaiser's comment of the week is from Lurker M on the post about Biden's address to the nation. My comment of the week is from Lightpurple on Kismet's post covering June Squibb's interview. Thanks for listening bitches!

Andy Webb returns to the podcast to tell Andrew and Phil of new developments in his long-running battle to uncover the truth behind Martin Bashir's interview with Diana, Princess of Wales. Newly released BBC emails - some heavily redacted - reveal the scale of a 25 year cover up and shine new light on the case, including the disgraced reporter's belief that his critics are motivated by professional jealousy or even racism. Andy also has some harsh words on the conduct of the BBC governors. If they had asked tougher questions at the time, could the course of Diana's life have been changed for the better? We then meet ex MP Norman Baker, one of the most dogged investigators to have ever worked in Britain's House of Commons. He's led a thirty year battle to uncover the truth about BA flight 149, which flew into Kuwait during Saddam Hussein's invasion of that country in 1990, leaving its passengers to become hostages. Was the flight allowed to land despite the obvious dangers in order to insert a special forces team? Bakes believes that he can prove that it was. We talk with two renowned playwrights about their new plays – both on for a short run and neither of them to be missed.    Roger McGough, the much-loved author, Mersey poet and presenter of BBC Radio Four's ‘Poetry Please', has adapted Molière's ‘The Hypochondriac' for The Crucible in Sheffield. It's already opened to rave reviews, with Edward Hogg starring as Argan. Jonathan Maitland, journalist and broadcaster turned playwright, has written ‘The Interview', a play about Princess Diana's interview with Martin Bashir, which opens on 27th October at The Park in London for a short run. Roger McGough tells us how he came to adapt Molière's 17th century classic and transform it into a comic delight for contemporary audiences. He also looks back at his time with The Scaffold, his fellow Mersey Poets, Brian Patten and the late Adrian Henri (‘The Mersey Sound' has sold over a million copies) and regales us with tales of working on the script of ‘Yellow Submarine'.   Jonathan Maitland, who shared an office with Martin Bashir at ITV for six years, tells us why now why is such a good time to examine Princess Diana's legacy afresh and look again at our very polarised, if not frenzied, reactions to Martin Bashir and the way the now notorious interview, watched by over 23 million in the UK alone, came about.  ‘The Hypochondriac' at The Crucible, Sheffield:  until 21st October ‘The Interview' at The Park: 27th October till 5th November With thanks to Lomi for supporting us over the last six episodes.  You can advantage of their  offer to get £50 off a Lomi by going to uk.lomi.com and using promo code breakout at the checkout.

On the 9th of October 1986, Karen Hadaway and Nicola Fellows returned home from school, running through the front doors of their respective homes, eager to get changed and play outside. Around 5 pm, the girls played with friends outside a neighbor's house. Shortly after this, the girls headed to Wild Park; despite knowing they were not allowed there, Nicola was told by her parents that the “boogeyman” lived there, hoping to scare her away from ever entering. Sadly, for unknown reasons, the girls entered the park that afternoon. The girls were spotted around 5:15 pm by a park policeman, playing on some trees, who warned them that they would hurt themselves. As the afternoon turned into evening, both families began to worry. 8 pm was their bedtime, and they both knew to be home by then, but there was no sign of either of them. Today's Oddcast - Queen of Hearts (Airdate 3/21/2022) Four days ago the BBC acknowledged that the explosive 1995 interview of the late Princess Diana by journalist Martin Bashir was obtained by deceitful means. This is the interview that rocked the monarchy, sent shockwaves around the world, and nearly ruined the life of Princess Diana's private secretary, Patrick Jephson. The BBC paid substantial damages to Jephson and apologized for the harm done. Looking back at this heart-rending interview, listening to the late Princess Diana talking about fate and the future raises the hair on the back of your neck. So much has changed since this interview first aired...and yet so much of this story feels exactly as Princess Diana called it.
