Send us a textWellington Theatre's 2024 Co-Actor of the year Bronwyn Turei (Ngāti Porou) drops into Penny's house to discuss all things fleshy. From being head girl at Gisborne Girls, to dealing with a lot of intense trauma as a teenager, to heading to London's Globe theatre to becoming a constantly jobbing professional actress, she and Penny covered how her body rode this rollercoaster. She talked of hitting the giddy heights of fame aged 24 when cast in the TV show Go Girls, of leaning into her "curvy" characters storylines despite how some of them felt, of how totally adorable her child is, (despite how traumatic her birth was) and how she once went on a blind date to Shanghai. Penny also thanked her being being a superstar in Penny's directorial debut with Sense & Sensibility where she was part of a stellar cast, and they laughed about how Bronwyn's toddler wormed her way into Penny's cold dead non maternal heart. After 110 starts and over five years of plugging away at it, Lando Norris finally takes his first Grand Prix win on the Streets of Miami after McLaren brought a beefy new upgrade to the race that replaced almost the entire aerodynamic body of the car, and a bit of a fortunate Safety Car between Magnussen and Sargeant and yeah... man cashed in a big one! Sadly, it wasn't without controversy though, as US Presidential Candidate and former Preisdent Donald Trump was invited to the race on behalf of F1 and Lando and McLaren were probably a bit too accomodating for him. We talk about that. CONTENT WARNING: Sexual language is used that you may find upsetting, be careful if you choose to listen. Look after yourselves. We also talk about Kevin Magnussen picking up 35 seconds worth of time penalties for running Lewis Hamilton off the road to keep him behind to protect his teammate in the Sprint. 5 penalty points in a weekend. Is Kevin gaming the penalty system? Let the debate continue. All that and more on another Motorsport101!
PART THREE. In Canada there is a stretch of highway between the cities of Prince Rupert and Prince George that covers 725 km (or 450 miles). For over 50 years, this dark, isolated road has swallowed up women and girls in the night from 1969 to present. Because of the despair that has happened along this corridor, it is now known as the Highway of Tears. In this three-part series, we will be exploring this area and the devastating stories found alongside it. If you have any information for any of these cases, please call the E-PANA Tip Line at 1.877.543.4822.Content Warning: Sexual assault Tea of the Day: Rhea.co Strengthen Me Tea Theme Music by Brad FrankTo get involved:https://highwayoftears.org/pillars-hope-strength/https://www.csfs.org/payments/donationshttps://www.mmiwg-ffada.ca/Sources:Sabo, Don, “Highway of Tears,” The Canadian Encyclopedia, June 6th, 2016, Updated January 18th, 2019 https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/highway-of-tearsDirected by Matthew Smiley, “Highway Of Tears: The Unsolved Serial Murders Of Aboriginal Women.” Produced by Carly Pope, Narrated by Nathan Fillion, Released March 6th, 2015 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3wWjcIc_1MDirected by Tim Wolochatiuk, “We Were Children.” Produced by Kyle Irving, Starring Rene Batson, Taya Ayotte Bourns, Alice Dano, Release by Eagle Vision Inc. 2013. https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B07FQ3GZKX/ref=atv_dp_share_cu_rMcDiarmid, Jessica, “Highway of Tears: A True Story of Racism, Indifference, and the Pursuit of Justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.” Narrated By Emily Nixon, Simon and Schuster, November 12th, 2019“The Highway of Tears: The Road Where Women Disappear” by Bipin Dimri October 4, 2022 https://www.historicmysteries.com/highway-of-tears/“Highway of Tears,” 48 Hours, Season 25, Episode 7 with Peter Van Sant, November 17th, 2012Bains, Camille, “Relatives of dead, missing women meet to seek an end to violence.” The Vancouver Sun, 30 Mar 2006, Thu ·Page 27 https://www.newspapers.com/image/496873937/Speirs, Margaret, “Tears walk numbers climb.” Terrace Standard, 29 Mar 2006, Wed ·Page 1 https://www.newspapers.com/image/330198530/Million, Nicole, “Moricetown woman walking to end Highway of Tears.” The Interior News (Smither, British Columbia, March 1st, 2006, Page A5 https://www.newspapers.com/image/899209888/Dolha, Lloyd, “Highway of Tears Symposium Sparked by Teen Murder.” First Nations Drum, January 3rd, 2006 http://www.firstnationsdrum.com/2006/01/highway-of-tears-symposium-sparked-by-teen-murder/Hamilton, Todd, “Taking back highway of tears.” The Interior News, 21 Sep 2005, Wed ·Page 2https://www.newspapers.com/image/508753084/Carrigg, David, “Mother of slain teen Aeilah struggling to pay for funeral.” The Province 22 Feb 2006, Wed ·Page 16 https://www.newspapers.com/image/505252524/Zielinski, Susan, “City woman missing.” Red Deer Advocate, 05 Jul 2002, Fri ·Page 1 https://www.newspapers.com/image/558928173/Hall, Neal, “Highway of Tears website launched.” The Vancouver Sun 26 Nov 2005, Sat ·Page 4 https://www.newspapers.com/image/497415120/Slade, Daryl, “Olympic skater laces up to find friend.”Calgary Herald 09 Jul 2002, Tue ·Page 23 https://www.newspapers.com/image/486299668/Hunter, Stuart, “‘She's been gone too long.'” The Province, 24 Nov 2005, Thu ·Page 3 https://www.newspapers.com/image/505694271/The Province - In Canada, there is a stretch of highway between the cities of Prince Rupert and Prince George that covers 725 km (or 450 miles). For over 50 years, this dark, isolated road has swallowed up women and girls in the night from 1969 to present. Because of the despair that has happened along this corridor, it is now known as the Highway of Tears. In this three-part series, we will be exploring this area and the devastating stories found alongside it. Content Warning: Sexual assault In this episode, I had the pleasure of sitting down with someone that I regard to be one of the best minds and brightest lights in this field, Whitley Strieber. Whitley Strieber is an author of both fiction and nonfiction books, perhaps the most famous of which is his pioneering 1987 book Communion, which detailed his experience of abduction that occurred in the winter of 1985. Since then, Whitley has made many other contributions to the field including his most recent book entitled Them, and the book Super Natural which he co-wrote with Jeffrey J. Kripal, both of which have been referenced several times on this podcast. Whitley is also the host of the long-running Dreamland podcast. You can find links to all of this and more in the episode brief.Whitley's work has been instrumental to my thinking and growth in this space, and I'm so grateful for both his courage and generosity in sharing his time and his insights. "Thetis had to be always on her grind." Mythology has a lot of terrible dads. For once, let's talk about an excellent mother! Thetis did the MOST for her son, Achilles (even when she probably shouldn't). But as Darien (she/her) and DJ (he/him) learn, not even a goddess can save her son from a prophecy. Other topics include Achilles having no chill, DJ's stance on the Ares v. Apollo Flying Chariot Conflict, Darien coming dangerously close to saying a popular myth retelling isn't good, and the mind-blowing connection between Thetis, Sally Jackson, and May Castellan. Content Warning: Sexual abuse, spiritual abuse, severe mental health disordersKyler's story is one of “beauty from ashes”. He lives with dissociative identity disorder, a category of CPTSD. Kyler is one distinct personality in the “system”. The adults in his life abused him as a child—would not keep him safe—and so his brain stepped in and made a way to survive.Kyler watched the church fail him and his family over and over, refusing to help or even acknowledge the abuse and trauma.“This person who has PTSD has no clue where it's from, has all this trauma, pain, and hurt…and the church just wants to throw Bible verses and actually doesn't want to help you.”Today, Kyler is a completely different person than when he was young. He's free to embrace his whole self without shame and fear, and the future is radiant.Links988https://988lifeline.org/Recovering From Religionhttps://www.recoveringfromreligion.org/Secular Therapy Projecthttps://www.seculartherapy.org/InteractFor quotes, recommendations, transcripts and more see the full episode show noteshttps://gracefulatheist.com/2023/06/25/kyler-cptsd/Graceful Atheist Podcast Merch!https://www.teepublic.com/user/gracefulatheistpodcastJoin the Deconversion Anonymous Facebook grouphttps://www.facebook.com/groups/deconversionSupport the podcast on Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/gracefulatheistSecular Gracehttps://gracefulatheist.com/2016/10/21/secular-grace/Deconversionhttps://gracefulatheist.com/2017/12/03/deconversion-how-to/Deconstructionhttps://gracefulatheist.com/2017/12/03/deconversion-how-to/#deconstruction/Attribution"Waves" track written and produced by Makaih Beatshttps://makaihbeats.net/

CONTENT WARNING: Sexual assault Did you know that it takes only 3.5 years to sail around the world but up to 10 years to get an endometriosis diagnosis? That three out of four women experience pain during intercourse at some point in their lives? Or that nearly half of all women aged 18 to 35 have trouble reaching orgasm with a partner, and most women don't score their sexual satisfaction as very high? These statistics are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the vast spectrum of issues that women face with regards to their reproductive and sexual health. And did you know that women, like myself, who try to talk about this -- and even things like birth and breastfeeding, on social media platforms have been censored while overtly sexual ads for male issues are overtly promoted? Unfortunately, this pervasive culture of censorship silences crucial information from being shared among women and hinders progress towards achieving equity and wellbeing around important women's health issues. Enter Jackie Rotman, founder and CEO of the Center for Intimacy Justice. Jackie is an inspiring activist and creative whose work on social media equity has been instrumental in changing policies so that women's voices can be heard and women's health needs can be more openly discussed on Meta (Facebook, Instagram). Join me for this latest On Health episode where Jackie and I discuss: The pleasure gap: what it is and why it needs to change Why women's reports of sexual satisfaction are so much different than men's How internet censorship around women's health affects our knowledge and empowerment The personal experiences that inspired Jackie to focus her substantial intellectual power on internet censorship and sexual health bias How stifling and censoring women's health affects the reach of business by women, for women, and favors the growth of men's businesses into the women's health space. This is a must-listen episode for all of us trying to find health information and thrive in our modern internet world. Thank you so much for taking the time to tune in to your body, yourself, and this podcast! CONTENT WARNING: Sexual assault, suicide, suicidal ideation, depression, institutional silencing What happens when the trauma of sexual assault extends beyond the event itself? What happens when an academic institution that is meant to protect its students ends up perpetuating further harm? On today's episode, Katie interviews an anonymous guest who speaks about the experience of sexual assault that took place when she was an undergraduate student at Brown University and the aftermath of those events. While stories in the media of sexual assault are often portrayed as black and white, this particular narrative brings out why that approach often doesn't do justice to these complex, nuanced stories and the imperfect people behind them. Content Warning: Sexual assault and adult themes Sahar courageously shares her assault story from when she was 16 years old. She had suppressed these memories for the past 8 years, but tells us how confronting them, sharing her story, and accepting is part of her healing process. We discuss the concept of grooming: the act of manipulation by an older person who holds power over a minor. Sahar highlights that our community can often trivialize experiences with assault by making women question whether or not they really are victims, and she gives our listeners guidance on how to identify and understand key signs. Plus, we dive into “brown boy misogyny” and how certain expectations and attitudes can perpetuate harmful rhetoric and social habits. We talk openly about how this experience has impacted Sahar's self-esteem and her intimacy and trust in relationships. Lastly, Sahar outlines exactly what consent is. This story is hard to hear, but extremely necessary, as we don’t often enough have open dialogue about this, and this is the only way we can all do better and be more empathetic and helpful toward victims. ***CONTENT WARNING: Sexual abuse, mental illness, abuse of power, drug abuse Why is the allure of ouija, horror films, and other spooky themes so intriguing to us all? It's possibly because of our natural curiosity for those very real mysterious energies we all sense around us day to day. There are many reasons that we are compelled to make play out of the macabre, however there are very real factors that can effect your mental health AND your physical health. Just as Ouija is not a game, neither is divination nor is witchcraft. If you're going to become a practitioner, there are many precautions you ought to take first, and things to approach with respect. This episode dives right in to some extremely serious and very real dangers newcomers should be aware of and avoid. As witchcraft, divination and spirituality gains popularity, naturally more and more people are being intrinsically drawn to it. Professional Reader and Mambo Gina Jean wanted to take this opportunity to discuss taking responsibility as a new comer in magical study and practice to our youth just finding their way. Some grave things to look out for and avoid, what you will need to know to find your way on your personal path, as well as many recommendations of inspiring and safe people and places to check out and follow. We also talk about the importance of always having a mentor and what you need to know in order to become a mentor later in your practice yourself. With this many amazing recommendations, you might want to grab a pen and paper! I recommend taking some notes.
