Make a Living Acting Anywhere and From Home Series Generally, while you are in training (refer to Step 2), you are getting acting experience. You’ll be doing scene work, monologues, on-camera commercials, etc…but, in addition to the experience you get doing scene work as part of your training, it is BEST to go out and get real life experience in your community or as part of an online group (my favorite is a course online by a talent manager in hollywood). The Julien Dubuque International Film Festival made “The Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World” list by MovieMaker Magazine in 2013. I am proud to State that I had a part in that at the ground level as one of the people who got it off the ground. Here’s the first step we took to get it done: Well, first things first! I was approached by Michael Coty and Christopher (Kulovitz at the time) Wydra. These gents were the founders of Get Reel, a student film festival. They wanted to know if I could help them put together a film festival. The quick answer was yes! I was desperate to bring more opportunities for serious, professional actors to our town and I knew this was a very good way to make that happen. It’s Not What you Know, It’s WHO You Know My drive alone wasn’t going to get the job done. The first thing I did was introduce the gentlemen to a production company I had been making commercials, doing live events, and acting in industrial films and voice overs with. I figured, they were going to need someone who not only knew how to create an event but also would document and film the process for opening night. Those folks said YES! The next persons we had to get involved was a local couple with relations to a name actor. A name actor that was from the town was ideal. Offering the name actor an Honorable Chair position on the Festival was the couples’ idea and it went over swimmingly. Kate Mulgrew who plays “Red” on Orange is the New Black became our Honorable Chair and because she was from Dubuque, audiences came out in droves to welcome her back to their community. But, How do I Do This? In the custom of providing a step-by-step plan for actors who want to Make a Living Acting Anywhere, the two things under the one heading are enough to get started. Steps 1 and 2 Production Company Involvement email, call, or door knock local production companies in your area and find out if they would be interested in starting a film festival with you. Here are some clues as to what’s in it for them: a) Advertising and Marketing in their Provided Services, b) an enrapt audience watching their professional work and therefore opening the doors to much more work c) relationships with professional actors and voice artists who can make their work even better for their own clients! Name Actor (from your town or closeby) Involvement With Google and IMDB readily at your fingertips, this is probably the easiest step in the process. Go start searching. And, this is only if you don’t already know of someone who is an actor who was a member of your community. Most people know this! But, if you don’t, here are the search terms I’d use to get started: Actors from…. ________born actors “Which known actors are from_________” etc… I look forward to seeing what you put on! Please, leave a message, comment, subscribe, share and like for more. Have questions? Bring it on. Step Five Step Five really isn’t the fifth step if you can do all four steps prior to it while also doing this step; start to compile all of the places you want to perform your show. This is the step where some actors get a little overwhelmed. Afterall, all you want to do is act and achieve the goal you set out to achieve when you started this journey. But, in order for that final goal to be realized, you must choose the right venue or venues to perform! Here are just three ideas, how many can you come up with? Feel free to add places in the comments so I can include them and give you credit on my podcast! Colleges Colleges are a great place to seek bookings for your Solo Show! Doing a quick Google Search by State will help you compile a list of schools in no time that you can start to contact and inquire as to their submission guidelines, pay, and availability. If you do this, you can start to chip away at the ones you are a right fit for and delete the ones that don’t fit in with what you’re trying to accomplish. Cabaret If your Solo Show has music or you sing, start by searching all of the Cabaret venues in each state that you want to work in. Then, follow the same method as for Colleges. You can contact these venues and find out what they pay, if they pay :-) and how to get booked! Theaters Some theaters bring in shows during their dark nights! I performed in many theaters that brought in my show. The benefits of this include their commitment to promoting the event so they can make money after the expense of bringing your show in, sometimes, they will give you a review based on your materials! This can be used for future bookings. The real value here is in the relationship-building. If you’re professional and do good work, you will create a lifelong contact in the industry. This can lead to future bookings! It can also lead to future work with that resident company as well as a potential for getting your solo show booked for a length of time; valuable for getting reviews! It is very difficult to get reviews for touring solo shows that don’t start off in major towns due to the inherent fact that you won’t be performing there by the time a potential audience would be interested by the review to come see it. Use this list to get started! And, comment below to let me know how it goes! As always, break a leg and I look forward to seeing you on stage! Step Three Do rewrites based on feedback if necessary Do Rewrites When I received the first draft of the script “The Stupid Economy” from Robert Lynn, I had a plan to read it at a designated time. BUT, I wanted to get a quick glance because my Gemini mind -meaning curious, curious, curious- could not wait until my scheduled reading time. So, I started to glance through it. I ended up grabbing a cup of coffee, postponing whatever it was I thought was more important than reading the script right then, and I read that script right then. It was clear to me that I had a gem in my hands and I voraciously consumed every word. As an actor yourself, you know what this feels like; that every single word was specifically written from your DNA. It was my rhythm and it was my voice! How Robert nailed that in the first draft is a magical genius I will never understand but he continues to do it with every request! These rewrites should inform you as the writer, or the playwright you enlisted to write this solo show for you, how to mold the show into a performance piece for YOU that highlights YOUR talents, YOUR message, and YOUR voice! Based on Feedback If Necessary If you’ve been following this step by step in order, you know that doing the rewrites starts with the reading in front of a selected audience at a local venue. After we did the reading, we received quite a bit of delicious feedback. Some of that feedback we took: like threading the Corporate Insider character throughout the production like a Narrator who coldly tells the audience what is. And, some of that feedback we left: like removing LaMonica Johnson from the show because it appeared like I was playing a “black woman”. We left LaMonica Johnson because she was the voice of wisdom and reason in the show and could have been any race (it is not expressly indicated in the script whether she is black, white, hispanic, mixed, or other)! As an actor, I created a character. The character I created, was actually over 250 pounds. I weigh 150. But, the audience believed I was a bigger woman because of my mannerisms. What the audience believed about LaMonica’s race was their own. As Anais Nin stated so eloquently, “We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.” It is not your job as an artist to hide from the scarey, social trappings. It is your job as an artist to shine a light on them. That’s a quote from me. Rehearsal The rewrites from the feedback are continuously enhanced as part of the rehearsal process. But, that’s a whole article for another time. What you should take from this session is to stop reading, stop listening, stop watching and go DO the rewrites from the feedback from the reading! Break a leg! And, have a ball. If you have been following along the journey of how to Make a Living Acting Anywhere you know that we are now breaking down the first 5 steps in putting on a solo show. This step seems simple and pretty cut and dry. But, it is important to break it down because of the value you can get from doing this step! “Conceive then write (or hire a writer) to create your Solo Show. Decide if you want to do this on the road or at a specific venue. Important to do this as part of the first step in order to create a show that either travels well or can be stationary and perhaps more involved.” Conception. When I called up Robert Lynn to ask him to write a one-person show for me he was interested in what that meant for me, what that looked like in the grand scheme of things, what the big picture looked like. And, of course, what did I want it to be about, he needed to know! At the time I made that call to him I honestly didn’t have an exact idea of what I wanted. I did know a few things and I rambled them off to him. I knew that I really liked doing political theater, that taking an audience on a roller coaster ride of emotions was tremendously effective in good theater and that I could play a variety of characters and had a great ear for accents. I remember saying, “maybe something about the economy or the 1%?” which happened to be a major focus at the time. Robert returned to me in what seemed like less than a month with our show “The Stupid Economy”. I played 7 characters. Audiences laughed. Cried. And talked about it for weeks after the lights went out. I know that because they wrote those words to me in messages, on LinkedIn as Reviews, and blasted them all over their own social media profiles. The show also sold out on Theater Row as part of the United Solo Festival. More on how to get to this in upcoming articles. I could not write a show. It wasn’t in my scope of abilities at that time. I am currently in the concept stages of a new one-woman show and very excited about writing it myself. But, I needed the experience of doing one without having written it myself at that time. Why? I am an actor. All I wanted to do was act. I wanted to showcase my talent and deliver a message I stood behind. I hoped to perform for the masses and perhaps get seen by someone who wanted to sign me or cast me in future productions. But, most importantly, I wanted to make my living acting. Where I live that means making it happen myself. I encourage a script written for you because of time. When we write our own work and have nobody else to hold us to a deadline, we tend to get tied up in perfection mode. This can keep you from actually producing! Suddenly, years have passed and you still haven’t completed your script. Let the momentum of someone else who is dedicated to getting you a script in a timely manner get you up on that stage and Making a Living Acting Anywhere, right now! Right now! Go! Go find someone or get a referral from someone to a playwright and don’t worry about knowing what you want to DO! Just, start the conversation and let all of the possibilities run out into the creative space between you and get started. You’ll be Making a Living Acting Anywhere in no time!
