Peter Gil-Sheridan on His New Comedy, This Space Between Us Peter Gil-Sheridan is a playwright and a professor at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. Peter was a founding member of The Pool, a pop-up theatre company formed with Lynn Rosen and Susan Bernfield and he is a regular writer-in-residence with the Silverton Theatre Mine in Silverton, CO. His new play, This Space Between Us, is running off-Broadway, produced by Keen Company, at Theater Row on 42nd Street. Wendy Sheridan speaks with him about this new comedy, which explores the expanse of cultural and political differences within a family as one member decides to head to Africa for a cause. Some questions the play evokes are: "How can we drop our complacency and get active?" "How much giving is enough?" "What does freedom look like for each of us and what does it cost us?" In The Artscape, Wendy asks Robin Renée about hir latest creative endeavors; there are new songs in the works and an anxiety-producing technological learning curve to bring them into fruition. Earlier in 3 Random Facts, Robin and Wendy share some trivia about the invention of glitter, the origin of the term "salad days," and why a certain jar of Vegemite in New South Wales is so special. The News gets to serious issues including closing arguments in the trial of January 6th defendant, Guy Reffitt (The day after recording Reffitt was found guilty on all charges), Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine and others' application to join the European Union (there are complications), resistance against the new, terrible anti-trans law in Texas, a statewide student walkout in Florida against the "Don't Say Gay" bill, and a campaign in the UK introducing guidelines for individuals to help combat global warming with lifestyle changes. In other, stranger news, the "killing stone" in Japan has split in two. Has the spirit of an evil nine-tailed fox been unleashed? At the end of the show, Wendy and Robin take on a listener question, "What book scared you when you read it?" Things to do: Get tickets for This Space Between Us by Peter Gil-Sheridan. What a fun time with had with Mss Francois. Stomach hurting laughter. Patrice explains that her Mss stands for Multi-Talented and Super Sexy. :)Mss Francois shared her humor and spoke about her show that is about relationships. Mss Francois says every relationship is dysfunctional in some way. She also explained that people are too quick to break the vows. What would you do if you had an option to exit every 7 years? Yes, that was brought up too, which was interesting. Roy, being married 50 years, explains marriage is like a job. You have to work at it, to which Mss Francois did explain about the Disney Syndrome. Disney never spoke to what "happily ever after" was.Mss Francois spoke to infidelity, and that if you can't forgive it and get past it it's not worth staying. However, if you can, it's worth it as well. It's all about the person.Roy brought up trust, communication, and being open with a respect for the spouse's belongings (like his wife's purse) :), which is why his marriage lasted. Mss Francois then asked if he had available sons. LOLIf you want to laugh hearing about relationships, this is a must listen to!!Mss Francois' book Let That @#$%&! It's no surprise that Haskiri Velazquez acquired the "do it myself" attitude. Growing up in Washington Heights NY, she didn't have the resources she needed to succeed in her career, but she never gave up. With many pursuits outside of school, Haskiri attended a non-profit organization called Urban Arts Partnership, where she took their Lifestories Theater program. Her passion for Acting was known from the start as she would have busy school days and Auditions during the week, and during the weekends, she would attend her theater classes for about 6 hours a day (which, by the way, was about a two-hour subway ride to and from her home). Haskiri put on lots of black-box productions at Theater Row in Times Square and even at the Lucille Lortel Theater with her theater program where she captured her audiences. During this time, Haskiri had the opportunity to be directed by Gina Rodriguez, Jesse Williams, and Victor Maog. Though she started off as a theater kid, it wasn't long after her graduating the program and becoming an Alumni that she transitioned into TV/Film. Her first on-screen role was in NYC 22 as 'Tatiana Garcia'; from that moment on, it was clear how much the camera loved her that even director David Rambo mentioned it to her father. Since then, Haskiri went on to booking more roles such as playing 'Shyvon Stevens' in Law&Order SVU (NBC), The Birch as recurring character 'Charlotte' for Facebook Watch, Guest Starring as 'Melissa Rodriguez' on Blue Bloods (CBS), 'Rosa' in the Forty-Year-Old Version feature film which premiered at Sundance (2020) and is set to premiere globally on Netflix (on October 9th). Most recently, Haskiri has been cast as 'Daisy,' the lead in the Saved By The Bell Reboot. Haskiri has plans to start her own Non-profit and hopes to inspire other Latinx to keep pursuing their dreams no matter how big it may seem. She also hopes to keep seeing the right representation for her fellow Latinx community on screen. Resources:
This week we are Kush Chatting with Akiko Tokuoka who is a dancer, choreographer and actress currently based in New York. Her unique concept is to create an explosion of contrasting elements including global cultures, historical eras and styles. She has over 20 years experience as an performance artist, specializing in freestyle dancing. At a young age she was drawn to many dance styles such as Hip-Hop, Jazz as well as 80's Funk. She started off taking gigs at various nightclubs while also working as a backup dancer for a well-known J-Pop artist. In 2004, she relocated from Kyoto, Japan to NYC to expand on her career with modern dancing, ballet, contemporary dance, kabuki dance, martial arts and baton twirling as well as taking advanced acting training at HB Studio in the Meatpacking District. This led her to be featured in roles at various venues such as the Lincoln Center, Blue Note, The Metropolitan Museum of the Art and other locations in the metro area including the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. She fell in love with the voguing culture in New York and worked her way up to becoming an official member of the “Legendary House of Ninja” by 2009. Legendary House of Ninja is a voguing collective who have worked with artists such as Madonna for the 2012 Super Bowl Performance. Her crew name is "KiT Ninja," and in 2010 she coordinated their tour through major cities in Japan including her native hometown Kyoto. She was also hand selected by Madonna for an exclusive dance show on the icon’s birthday in 2011, acted in Off-Broadway Musicals such as "Heather Smiley for President” in 2015, in a traditional Japanese play “Jyou En” in 2015 and choreographed and performed ”WARLOVERS” by James Doyle at Theater Row in 2017. Most Recently, She performed in the ongoing improv comedy show “BATSU NYC” until March of 2020. “Conceive then write (or hire a writer) to create your Solo Show. Decide if you want to do this on the road or at a specific venue. Important to do this as part of the first step in order to create a show that either travels well or can be stationary and perhaps more involved.” Conception. When I called up Robert Lynn to ask him to write a one-person show for me he was interested in what that meant for me, what that looked like in the grand scheme of things, what the big picture looked like. And, of course, what did I want it to be about, he needed to know! At the time I made that call to him I honestly didn’t have an exact idea of what I wanted. I did know a few things and I rambled them off to him. I knew that I really liked doing political theater, that taking an audience on a roller coaster ride of emotions was tremendously effective in good theater and that I could play a variety of characters and had a great ear for accents. I remember saying, “maybe something about the economy or the 1%?” which happened to be a major focus at the time. Robert returned to me in what seemed like less than a month with our show “The Stupid Economy”. I played 7 characters. Audiences laughed. Cried. And talked about it for weeks after the lights went out. I know that because they wrote those words to me in messages, on LinkedIn as Reviews, and blasted them all over their own social media profiles. The show also sold out on Theater Row as part of the United Solo Festival. More on how to get to this in upcoming articles. I could not write a show. It wasn’t in my scope of abilities at that time. I am currently in the concept stages of a new one-woman show and very excited about writing it myself. But, I needed the experience of doing one without having written it myself at that time. Why? I am an actor. All I wanted to do was act. I wanted to showcase my talent and deliver a message I stood behind. I hoped to perform for the masses and perhaps get seen by someone who wanted to sign me or cast me in future productions. But, most importantly, I wanted to make my living acting. Where I live that means making it happen myself. I encourage a script written for you because of time. When we write our own work and have nobody else to hold us to a deadline, we tend to get tied up in perfection mode. This can keep you from actually producing! Suddenly, years have passed and you still haven’t completed your script. Let the momentum of someone else who is dedicated to getting you a script in a timely manner get you up on that stage and Making a Living Acting Anywhere, right now! Right now! Go! Go find someone or get a referral from someone to a playwright and don’t worry about knowing what you want to DO! Just, start the conversation and let all of the possibilities run out into the creative space between you and get started. You’ll be Making a Living Acting Anywhere in no time! Subscribe, share with friends you know will benefit, and comment or submit questions to learn more about the process of getting a solo show up and running so that you can start Making a Living Acting Anywhere. Sincerely, Oscar a new musical celebrating Broadway's greatest lyricist, Oscar Hammerstein, with book by Doreen Taylor, who also is one of the stars along with Azudi Onyejekwe makes its Off Broadway debut at Theater Row. I got the chance to sit with the stars of the show, but I also got to sneak in the show's Musical Director and Arranger, Lou Lanza. This show takes you through some of the fantastic works associated with Mr. Hammerstein, but also uses his words from letters and speeches. The show also is the first to bring some audio visual WOW Factor by using hologram technology as part of the show. It is definitely going to be a fabulous surprise for theater goers. Host Deardra Shuler talks with Malaika Uwamahoro (pronounced Mah-Like-ah Ooh-wam-ah-har-oh) who is a young actor, spoken word poet-performer, singer, and social justice artist. She will be performing the central character plus 9 others in the critically acclaimed play “Miracle in Rwanda,” at the Lion Theater on Theater Row off-Broadway beginning April 4, 2019. The run of the play coincides with this 25th anniversary of the historic massacre in Rwanda where 800,000 lives were lost. “I am so happy to pass on this role to a woman of Rwandan heritage. Malaika is a brilliant actress, and she brings a sensibility that will move and inspire the audience. I can’t wait for the world to see her work,” said Leslie Lewis. MIRACLE IN RWANDA chronicles the dramatic events of Rwandan Genocide Survivor Immaculée Ilibagiza. The message is one of personal empowerment, of overcoming all obstacles through the power of faith, forgiveness and ultimately finding peace of mind amidst unbelievable hardship. The play runs from APRIL 4 - APRIL 21.
On episode 72 of SOMEWHERE IN THE SKIES, Ryan presents an exclusive audio documentary based on a relatively unknown UFO event that occurred in New Zealand in 1959. Eileen Moreland went out to milk the cows one morning in the South Island town of Blenheim. She returned home about eighty minutes later with an extraordinary story. "You may think I am mad,” she told police, “but I saw a flying saucer." After reporting the incident to the police, the local Air Force Base got involved and began to privately investigate the report. What they uncovered, and the events that followed, would both haunt the Air Force investigators and the Moreland family for many years to come. This is the incredible story; "Finding Mrs. Moreland: How One Woman's UFO Claim Exposed Paranoia and Fear in 1950s New Zealand." Set to the backdrop of the Cold War, this little known UFO event was covered in great detail by a New Zealand journalist named Charlie Gates.
