On this episode of the Customers First Podcast, I had the privilege of engaging with Delphia Howes, an esteemed leader in human resources, diversity, and inclusion. With over two decades of experience, Delphia has built a remarkable career and is also the author of "Including You: Leading Inclusion from Where You Are." We delved into the transformative power of diversity and inclusion (D&I) in organizational settings and how understanding these concepts is crucial for building successful teams and fostering an optimal workplace culture. Throughout our conversation, she emphasized that true inclusion begins with individuals taking personal responsibility, actively embracing underrepresented voices, and recognizing the wealth of experiences that diversity brings. As we navigated the core values of inclusion, Delphia eloquently articulated how each person's sense of belonging correlates to organizational success. She explained the difference between diversity and inclusion, emphasizing that having diversity without inclusion renders the former ineffective. Inclusion ensures that individuals feel valued and that their unique contributions are recognized and welcomed. Her insights highlighted the detrimental effects of exclusion on workplace morale, productivity, and retention. We discussed how innovation stems from a mosaic of experiences and how a homogeneous workforce limits an organization's potential for problem-solving and growth. Furthermore, we addressed the often misunderstood nuances of unconscious bias, with Delphia encouraging listeners to confront their biases openly. Leaders are responsible for fostering vulnerability and open dialogue, cultivating trust and deepening team members' relationships. Delphia's success and advocacy serve as a beacon for those eager to create authentic, customer-centric cultures that lead to magical experiences. The insights shared in this episode are invaluable for anyone looking to understand the true essence of D&I and how to implement these strategies effectively in their organizations.   Delphia's Contact Information: LinkedIn: Delphia Howze Website: DHowze Solutions Book Link: Including You   Tacey's Contact Information: Website: taceyatkinson.com LinkedIn: TaceyAtkinson   Thank you for tuning in, and I look forward to having more valuable conversations together in the future. Everyone, we assume, wants to be their best person. Few of us, perhaps, none, hits all their marks in this pursuit even if the way toward the goal is generally apparent. If you want to know how to do a better job hitting those marks, whether its walking 10,000 steps, learning Esperanto, or quitting smoking, a good person to consult would be Katy Milkman. Working at the nexus of economics and psychology, Milkman – the James G. Dinan Professor at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and co-founder of the Behavior Change for Good Initiative at Penn – studies the almost alchemical process of turning good intentions into solid actions. In this Social Science Bites podcast, she details for interviewer David Edmonds some of the biases and some of the critical thinking processes that both define and then overcome the obstacles to changing our behavior. These range from concepts with such academic names as present bias and temptation bundling to the more colloquial ‘what the hell effect' and its antidote, the emergency reserve. But the point of her research – especially as it gets translated to the public through her podcast Choiceology or her 2021 book How to Change: The Science of Getting from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be – is to find practical ways to change yourself. For example, she explains that “it's important for goals to be measurable and achievable, although they should be a stretch. You know, if your goal is ‘exercise more,' how can you measure that? How could you even set a commitment device, for instance? … It's also important to have a plan of, sort of, when will I do it, where will I do it, how will I get there. These are called “implementation intentions.” I think the most important part of them is they associate a cue with the action. So just like an actor needs a cue to know when to say their lines, we need to not forget to take action on our goals.” Her influence in turn is felt practically. Choiceology, for example, is sponsored by the brokerage house Charles Schwab, and Milkman has been a consultant for organizations ranging from the U.S. government and Walmart to 24 Hour Fitness and the American Red Cross. She is a former president of the Society for Judgment and Decision Making and a fellow of the Association for Psychological Science. We'd love to hear your feedback on the Social Science Bites series. Please let us know your thoughts on Social Science Bites by taking our short survey, and you'll be entered to win one of five free copies of the Social Science Bites book, Understanding Humans.

I'm not going to say that I woke up the next day and I was perfect and completely transformed. It's obviously a mega-journey and it's not linear and growth is so messy. – Mimi Bouchard  I had to believe in myself. The only thing that got me there was just this core deep belief in myself that I had to develop. I didn't have that in my younger years. Doing this work of personal development was the only thing that mattered when everyone else doubted me. It drove me. At the end of the day, it's a very lonely journey at the beginning. I had to be alone a lot. I had to be the only one who deeply believed in myself. – Mimi Bouchard When you're feeling alive, it slows down time. What a blessing to be able to slow down time – life goes by so quickly. The more things we can do to slow down time, the better our lives will be, and more clear. You have to unnumb yourself. When you numb yourself so much, it's very hard to get clear or get unstuck. It's very easy to stay in your old ways and just numb, numb, numb until you just feel nothing anymore. – Mimi Bouchard I think so much of it is the intention with which you do things. If you are open-hearted and seeking, a lot of tools can benefit you. – Amy Hardin Resources Mentioned in This Episode: The Success Principles: How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be by Jack Canfield - https://amzn.to/3CYaVq7 Activations App - https://www.superhuman.app/home Activate Your Future Self: The Secret to Effortlessly Becoming the Happiest, Healthiest and Wealthiest You by Mimi Bouchard - https://amzn.to/4gck8t6 Guest's Links: Mimi's website - https://www.mimibouchard.com/about Mimi's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/mimibouchard Mimi's Twitter - https://x.com/mimibouchard Mimi's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/officialmimibouchard Activations App - https://www.superhuman.app/home Connect with Jen! Tenille shares how she ended up in Nashville and how music has played a role in her life from a very young age. She also discusses how her breakthrough as an artist was shaped by the events that occurred in 2020. The two share their thoughts on how the music industry has evolved throughout the years. Listen/watch this weeks episode to find out more about Tenille's first live band performance at age 11, touring with Miranda Lambert, and so much more!   About Tenille Townes: Tenille Townes was born in Grande Prairie, Alberta, the 26-year-old singer-songwriter earned accolades for her wise-beyond-her-years ballads before she moved to Nashville in 2013. After years of taking in sets at the Bluebird Café and pushing herself in writing sessions, she started winning over Music Row with the songs that would eventually shape her acoustic EP, Living Room Worktapes. Each track told a potent story: her buoyant voice soared over love songs like "White Horse" and "Where You Are" with their clever choruses, but "Jersey on the Wall (I'm Just Asking)," in which she questions her faith after a senseless tragedy, and "Somebody's Daughter," an empathetic look into the life of a stranger, proved she had the range to write through life's most difficult challenges.

Leading Inclusion By Way of Personal Accountability... DTH Episode 230 with Delphia Howze

Leading Inclusion By Way of Personal AccountabilityFriends, today I'm very excited to bring you a conversation that goes way beyond the same old talk about DEI – this isn't just another conversation about diversity for diversity's sake. My guest today, Delphia Howze, is someone who brings a fresh, real perspective on what it truly means to create inclusive environments, and as you're about to hear, much of it starts with personal accountability.Delphia is the CEO and Founder of D. Howze Solutions and serves as the Chief Inclusion Officer at a national laboratory. She's been a driving force in the Diversity & Inclusion space for over two decades, with experience across industries – from banking to retail, to energy. Her approach is grounded in real-world results, helping organizations not just tick the diversity box, but truly harnessing the power of human capital to drive meaningful change. We're diving into her new book, Including You: Leading Inclusion from Where You Are, where Delphia takes a different route. She challenges each of us to look inward – to reflect on our own biases and understand how they affect the way we interact with others. It's about more than just policies or training sessions. It's about stepping up, having the hard conversations, and using something called ‘appreciative inquiry' to really bridge divides and foster genuine understanding. We'll talk about why giving people the space to be themselves is the real key, instead of forcing our own expectations on them. And the best part? It's not about pointing fingers – it's about how we can all do better, one step at a time, and how that personal growth creates positive ripples around us.If you're ready for an honest, no-fluff conversation on what it actually takes to create inclusive spaces in your life and work, then stick around. This one's going to shift your perspective. TakeawaysPersonal accountability is key in creating inclusive environments.Self-reflection helps us understand our biases and how they impact our interactions with others.Engaging in dialogue and appreciative inquiry can bridge divides and foster understanding.Giving people the space to be themselves and not imposing our expectations on them is crucial for inclusion.Striving to become better and understanding others leads to positive change in ourselves and our surroundings. What have you done today to make your life a better life? Those who watched to completion the hit Netflix competition series Blown Away 4, will no doubt remember Ryan Thompson's final gallery installation, Where You Are is Where You Need to Be. In all black glass, he created large vessel forms that served as sentinels to the recording of time. A blown glass pendulum in the center of the room recorded each moment in a footed reliquary of white sand below it. Its existential message spoke to the viewer silently. Permanently.  Thompson states: “This installation was created to satisfy a need to slow down, contemplate, and analyze my artistic path and my creative process. The unnatural pace at which Blown Away required its competitors to conceptualize and create caused a mental fatigue unlike anything I had ever felt. As difficult as this experience was, my journey as an artist has never been a straight line, and whether an experience has been positive or negative in the moment, in the end, it was exactly what it was supposed to be. Where You Are is Where You Need to Be is a space created to meditate and reflect on my trajectory both as a person and as an artist.” Hailing from Sandusky, Ohio, near the shores of Lake Erie, Thompson and his sister Leah grew up with a love of the outdoors, sports, and all things creative. These interests were endlessly nurtured by their parents Jim and Kathy Thompson. Ryan's passion for music began in the 5th grade when a group of friends with a band needed a drummer. His love for music and percussion remains today.  After completing high school, Thompson attended Bowling Green State University (BGSU), Bowling Green, Ohio, to study Visual Communication Technology, a degree program he found to be lacking in creative freedom and excitement. In his third year, he enrolled in an Intro to Glass Blowing course on the recommendation of a friend, and the trajectory of his life was altered forever.  For the next 3 years, Thompson poured every ounce of his energy into learning to control his molten material. The example of excellence in this craft demonstrated by his peers and instructors such as Scott Darlington set the bar of achievement high. He focused on fundamental skills in the form of vessel and goblet making, utilizing the Venetian processes and techniques he found most exciting and inspirational. After graduation, Thompson began working at the Toledo Museum of Art Glass Pavilion as a studio artist and workshop instructor, as well as a production glassblower at many local glass shops in the birthplace of the Studio Glass Art movement. During his time in Toledo, the artist was fortunate to work with many world-renowned glass artists, honing his skills and expanding his network of colleagues in this community-orientated profession. In 2018, Thompson accepted a production glassblowing position at Greenfield Village (The Henry Ford Museum) in Dearborn, Michigan. The job allowed Ryan to continue to broaden his skill set and expand on his experience as a production glassmaker. In 2021, he was promoted to shop lead and began coordinating the team's production efforts, designing new product and maintaining the equipment that makes glass blowing possible.  After participating in Blown Away 4, on May 1, Thompson relocated back to Toledo, Ohio, and became the new owner and operator of Gathered Glass, a public glass studio that offers hand-made glass, glassblowing workshops, and public events in the heart of The Glass City. This opportunity is something he has dreamt about for the last decade and is hard at work making the business his own. Thompson's partner, Kayla Kirk of Charmed Ceramics, is in the process of building a pottery studio on the second floor that will offer similar programming as well as hand crafted pottery for the home. The studio will be renamed Huron Street Studio and will celebrate its Grand Opening at 23 N. Huron St. in downtown Toledo, September 14, 2024.  Thompson will also participate in an Artist Residency at the Museum of Glass Tacoma from October 9 – 13, 2024.

Seph Custer is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Southwest Virginia. For his first 7 years in music, his career revolved around playing lead guitar, banjo, slide and mandolin for numerous rock, americana, blues, punk, alternative, and traditional bands. With a desire to combine his love for a wide range of music, and a shortage of musicians to perform the required parts, Seph embraced the role of front-man for the first time in 2014. Since then, he's fined tuned his sound over the course of two studio albums and over 1,200 live performances, combining his diverse music taste with his skill set from several instruments; all delivered with only vocals and a modified guitar. Seph Custer delivers high energy solo performances utilizing techniques from guitar, mandolin and bass to create a soundscape on a single instrument that rivals some 3-piece bands: no looping or pre-recorded tracks required. Seph has been featured in The Floyd Country Store's annual tribute concerts, covering Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Carole King, and Paul Simon. In 2015, Seph's music was so well received at Callaway Brewing Company, they named a small batch German Wheat Ale "Sepheweissen." Seph Custer & The Papa Tom Band were included in Floydfest's 2017 “Artists on the Rise” competition. In 2018, he became a member of Brackish Water Jamboree playing mandolin, joined them on tour, and performed alongside them in the “Rockn' to Lockn” competition. His first solo album, 'Where You Are' was released on January 19th, 2016. 'Where You Are' consists of 8 tracks, including 3 songs with violinist Laurel Brooke. It has been featured on 101.5 The Valley's Music Place, The Roanoke Times, and on various blogs online. 'Where You Are' was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Windfall Studios by Dave Fason in December of 2015. Seph's sophomore album, 'Beginning to End' features 12 original songs, touching on many genres; Americana, Funk, Bluegrass, Singer-Songwriter, Folk, Blues, Old-Time, and Rock, all performed with only guitar and vocals. 'Beginning to End' was recorded live on November 1st at Windfall Studios - engineered, mixed and mastered by Dave Fason, all on site. It was released worldwide on November 18th, 2017. As well as being a performer and composer, Seph teaches acoustic & electric guitar, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, bass, violin, slide guitar, lap steel, dobro, and music theory.

Most parents encounter resistance from their children. Perhaps when the kids are young and turning their noses up at vegetables, or when they're teenagers and balking at curfews or dress codes. So what's the best way to encourage good choices in the face of a rebellious kid? Or a rebellious adult, for that matter? In this episode of Choiceology with Katy Milkman, we look at the surprising ways that resistance to authority can be leveraged for positive change. During the mid 1990s, the "Truth" anti-youth smoking campaign was everywhere. Many TV ads cleverly harnessed the teenage penchant for rebellion, using guerilla filming techniques and revealing hidden truths about smoking known to the tobacco industry for years. The campaign drastically lowered youth smoking rates and remains one of the most effective campaigns in history. When you're facing loss—say, in a board game or during a sporting event or with a declining stock—it can be difficult to remember your true tolerance for risk. You're likely to seek risk more than you normally would. In this episode of Choiceology with Katy Milkman, we look at a tendency to seek risk in the face of losses when those losses aren't yet finalized, but how chalking up those losses and moving on can actually help you recalibrate your appetite for risk.During the American Revolutionary War, George Washington and his generals often adopted a strategy of retreating, or accepting losses on the battlefield, in order to regroup and live to fight another day. Their strategy was often successful against the British, who burned through men and equipment as they doubled down in their desire to win individual battles at the expense of their goal of regaining control of the American colonies.Mary Stockwell is a historian, writer, and former history professor at Lourdes University in Ohio. Her work is focused on the American Revolution. "Don't judge a book by its cover" is an old adage for a good reason. Elegant book cover designs can create a positive impression and make you more likely to judge the writing quality more positively. But these traits—cover art and writing—are separate and distinct features of books. So why do we allow the judgment of one trait to spill over to another unrelated trait? In this episode of Choiceology with Katy Milkman, we look at a tendency to allow our judgments of one trait of a person (or product or company) to overly influence our judgments of another, unrelated trait of that same person or product or company. The Traitors is a popular reality TV show, where contestants are assigned either the role of a "Faithful" or "Traitor." Those selected as Traitors eliminate Faithfuls each night and try to keep their identity a secret so the Faithfuls don't vote to eliminate them. By the end of the game, over $100,000 is up for grabs for those left standing. But how can the Faithfuls sniff out the Traitors and decide whom to banish? How do people form judgments of others and decide whom to trust? Wilfred Webster was a contestant on The Traitors, Season 1, on the BBC and played the game brilliantly, leveraging the way he appeared to other contestants to make it to the end. Wilfred Webster is the runner up to The Traitors, Season 1, on the BBC. Before The Traitors, Will managed face-to-face fundraising for one of the largest charities in the U.K. Today, he's a content creator and fundraising consultant. Next, Katy speaks with Daniel Read about his research on how our evaluations of a person or product or company on a single trait can spill over and excessively influence our judgments of that same person or product or company on another, separate trait. Are rules made to be followed—or meant to be broken? Often, the answer will depend on culture and the context in which people make decisions. In this episode of Choiceology with Katy Milkman, we look at how carefully people in different contexts follow social norms, rules, and procedures. We'll also see how strict and relaxed cultures affect the quality of our decisions—and how to find the sweet spot depending on your goals.Professional kitchens have historically been challenging work environments: high standards, long hours with low pay, and a strong hierarchy of cooks in the kitchen. "Yes, chef" was the only appropriate reply to higher-ranked chefs when Simon Rogan came through the ranks during the 1980s and '90s—a time when kitchen culture was tight and uncompromising. Today, Simon is working hard to change that culture across his restaurant group. Simon Rogan is a chef and restaurateur in the U.K. whose flagship restaurant, L'Enclume, has three Michelin stars and also holds a Michelin Green Star for its sustainable practices. Simon also runs a culinary program for young chefs called the Academy by Simon Rogan. Next, Katy speaks with Michele Gelfand about her research on tight and loose cultures and their impact on decision-making in different contexts. You can learn more from Michele's paper “Differences Between Tight and Loose Cultures” and take the quiz to determine if you tend to lean tight or loose. Michele Gelfand is the John H. Scully Professor in Cross-Cultural Management and Organizational Behavior at Stanford University. She's also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the author of the book Rule Makers, Rule Breakers: How Tight and Loose Cultures Wire Our World.Choiceology is an original podcast from Charles Schwab. If you enjoy the show, please leave a rating or review on Apple Podcasts. Important DisclosuresThe comments, views, and opinions expressed in the presentation are those of the speakers and do not necessarily represent the views of Charles Schwab.Data contained herein from third party providers is obtained from what are considered reliable source. In this episode of Choiceology with Katy Milkman, we look at how framing a decision based on what you stand to lose versus what you stand to gain affects your tolerance of risk.Luis Green was a contestant on the popular TV game show Deal or No Deal. The game is largely one of chance, but there are moments during play where the contestant has an option to accept a cash offer to quit. At one point in the game, Luis was offered $333,000 to simply walk away. A guaranteed win! It seems like an obvious choice. But as you'll hear from the story, there are other factors that influenced his decision.Katy illustrates these factors with a version of a famous experiment. Volunteers are presented with two differently worded but mathematically identical scenarios. A simple shift from framing the scenario as a potential gain to one of potential loss results in starkly different choices from the volunteers.Next, Katy speaks with special guest Daniel Kahneman about the underlying theory that explains human behavior in these types of situations. Daniel Kahneman served as professor of psychology and public affairs emeritus at the Woodrow Wilson School and the Eugene Higgins Professor of Psychology Emeritus at Princeton University. He was awarded the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economics for his pioneering research with Amos Tversky. Their work helped establish the field of behavioral economics. Kahneman also wrote the bestselling book Thinking, Fast and Slow. Finally, Katy speaks with Colin Camerer about some of his favorite studies on risk seeking in the domain of losses, as well as practical approaches for avoiding this less-than-ideal behavior. Colin Camerer is the Robert Kirby Professor of Behavioral Finance and Economics at the California Institute of Technology, where he teaches cognitive psychology and economics. When someone asks, "What's your favorite restaurant?" odds are you're inclined to recommend a place you've eaten at recently—even if it's not really your favorite. It's just top of mind. Why do we weigh recent events so heavily? And how does this tendency impact important decisions, like whom to vote for or how to conduct medical procedures? In this episode of Choiceology with Katy Milkman, we look at a phenomenon that can cause us to overweight recent events compared to earlier events and make suboptimal decisions. The 1968 presidential election was one of the closest elections in American history. Following an eventful year of civil unrest, war, and high-profile assassinations, eleventh-hour political machinations from Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon majorly impacted results. "October surprises," or last-minute revelations in the days before a November election, can weigh heavily on voters' minds at the polling booths. John A. Farrell documents the surprising events leading up to 1968 Election Day and President Richard Nixon's narrow victory.John A. Farrell is a historian and celebrated political biographer. He is the best-selling author of Richard Nixon: The Life, and his latest book is Ted Kennedy: A Life.Next, Katy speaks with Manasvini Singh about her research on recency effect and its impacts on physician decision-making in the delivery room. You can learn more in the Science paper Manasvini authored, titled "Heuristics in The Delivery Room."Manasvini Singh is an assistant professor of social and decision sciences at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research focuses on topics at the intersection between decision theory and health policy.Choiceology is an original podcast from Charles Schwab. Vitamin C is a cure for the common cold. Bats are blind. Sugar makes children hyperactive. All of these statements are false. So why are they so pervasive? And why do they feel so true?In this episode of Choiceology with Katy Milkman, we look at a phenomenon that can cause us to believe inaccurate information more than we should, and also lead us to trust reliable information less than we should. If you're over a certain age, you might remember friends or family panicking about MSG, or monosodium glutamate, particularly in American Chinese food. But those health concerns stemmed from a single letter to the editor in The New England Journal of Medicine—and a media storm that repeated false information. Jennifer LeMesurier learned about this letter and set off on a journey to trace the origins of the MSG scare and find out why the myths about this ingredient are so persistent. Jennifer LeMesurier is an associate professor of writing and rhetoric at Colgate University and the author of Inscrutable Eating: Asian Appetites and the Rhetorics of Racial Consumption.Next, Katy speaks with Tali Sharot about her research on the illusory truth effect—the idea that people are more likely to believe and share repeated information, whether or not the information is accurate. You can learn more in the paper Tali co-authored, titled "The Illusory Truth Effect Leads to the Spread of Misinformation."Tali Sharot is a professor of cognitive neuroscience at University College London and an affiliated professor in MIT's Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences.
