I've been receiving inquiries about what an EPK (electronic press kit) is and what needs to be in them. I've also been in various conversations where some artists missed opportunities due to not having certain tools to present to media, DJs, event promoters, and even to their fans. One would say that its tragic to not have an EPK, but for me, I give grace…to an extent. To an extent = Google, networking, asking an OG or someone that has done this over and over is always a reliable resource. Plus, Krate Digga might not go so far with you. *laughs*With that, I took some time to share quick bullets (below) that artists need to consider and have on them…at all times. You never know when someone will ask you for a song to play at a kid's event or if a blogger wants to cover your music on their platforms. We HAVE TO BE PREPARED.Enjoy the show and thanks to my brother Krate for coming through with the voice of reason. #TOTHETOP -have an EPK-have clean music-build relationships with the DJs-make sure you're sending the work to media-keep making dope music and share itResources mentioned in the show:Why an Electronic Press Kit mattersHow To Make An EPK That Will Get You NoticedFollow Krate Digga at his website: https://kratedigga.com. In this episode, we speak with Andy Murray, Andy was the European Marketing Director at Warner Music International and played a pivotal role in managing the marketing and promotion of The Corrs' albums. In our interview, we hear how he first heard of the band, his filming of the early Electronic Press Kit, and his helping to finalise a needed edit of the band's music video for ‘Love to Love You'. He also conceptualised the band's live EP, ‘The Corrs Live', to showcase the band's live abilities, which contributed significantly to their widespread recognition as more than just a 'good-looking' pop act. As a long-term fan himself, he provides unique insights into his experiences with The Corrs, offering a behind-the-scenes perspective on the meticulous work that shaped not only the promotion and production of 'Forgiven, Not Forgotten' but beyond. At 00:11:20 Andy mentions photos on paper that can be seen HEREAt 00:17:18 you can hear a clip of 'Runaway' performed acoustically as part of the EPK.At 00:25:30 Andy mentions John Mills scouting the location to recording the EPK. And as someone who works in journalism and distribution, I think this is something that's very important for any independent artist. We even go a little into how to write your own press release! And now we're here sharing that information with you too! Ep. 090 - [Branding for Musicians] Before you start releasing music you need to think about branding. This involves choosing a potential name, checking to see if others are using it and whether you can get the social media handles. Is the name memorable, spellable and googleable? Once you have a name, you'll need a specialized font for your logo, and maybe an emblem and a color scheme that represent you. Once you have all that you'll have to put it together in an Electronic Press Kit, or EPK. There's lots to learn, so today we'll give you a crash course. Demo reels are the most important asset you have when it comes to getting hired as a freelancer. Why? Well, a demo reel is basically just a collection of your best work and your favorite work. I include "favorite work," because, while it's dope that you've done a bunch of corporate work and weddings, but what have you done that looks badass AND is your own creative work? Why not show it off a little? So, demo reels are not only for filmmakers. Photographers, architects, dancers, athletes, and actors all use demo reels when applying for new gigs. If you watch any sporting event on TV you will see what's known as a "highlight" reel, which shows the best plays that were made in the game, as well as highlight reels of the best players and their achievements. While these aren't "demo reels" specifically, they do the same thing; they highlight the best footage of the best parts of the game. The person who EDITS all of those highlight reels, which I've done a few myself, can then use those videos IN their demo reel, to show that they are capable of editing short form digital content, and THAT is what gets you hired by ESPN. For musicians, this is essentially what your EPK, or Electronic Press Kit, is. It's a collection of your best work that is used to pitch your band to potential management, labels, sponsors, etc. If you need someone to make your highlight reel/demo reel you can definitely reach out to either myself, or you can look on Upwork.com for some incredible freelancers. Warum brauchst Du eins? Du willst einen zukünftigen Partner begeistern. EPK = Deine Bewerbung. Was gehört ins EPK? Deshalb: Zeit investieren! Das EPK ist Deine Visitenkarte innerhalb des Musikgeschäfts. Fotos aus richtigem Shooting, keine Schnappschüsse. Texte nicht einfach runterschreiben, sondern gezielt entwickeln. Lieber wenige hochwertige Videos als schlechtes Audio/Videomaterial. Investiere in Livevideos! Setz Dich in Dein gegenüber hinein.
Here's the hard truth about submitting anything via Sonicbids or Reverbation, your press kit to a record label, or trying to book a big show: You have less than one minute to get the person's attention. With those kinds of stakes and competition for attention, you better get it right by having an EPK that is up to date, has great information, and gets the right details across!
