Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. A short extract from our Full Duruthu Poya Dhamma session (on 6 January 2023) explaining the connection between the Four Noble Truths and having the Four Determinations as taught by the Buddha in the Dhātuvibhaṅga Sutta (MN 140), that lead to the four concentrations. This gives a broader picture of what underpins the verse "One should not neglect wisdom, should preserve Truth, should cultivate relinquishment and should train for peace" The Buddha give very clear and sequential instructions in his teaching to venerable Pukkusāti about - not neglecting wisdom (which means being vigilant in actively developing wisdom), preserving Truth (about Nibbāna), cultivating relinquishment (of all acquisitions), and training for peace (pacification from lust, hatred and delusion). It's important to see the link between having these Determinations based on understanding dukkha, wishing to abandon craving, realising cessation and fully developing the Noble Eightfold Path. And to see how they lead to the four developments and concentrations, inclining towards Nibbāna. **A table of "The Four Profitable Directions" as referenced in this extract has been posted to our Telegram channel (https://t.me/suttameditationseries/650) In the FULL session, we start to go into the sequential and powerful instructions of the Buddha in the Dhātuvibhaṅga Sutta (MN 140): To watch the full session (video) - https://bit.ly/3Gf539O To listen to the full session (audio) - https://bit.ly/3XfsqqV The video of this Extract has also been published to the Sutta Meditation YouTube channel - https://bit.ly/3GvBwZV Blessings of the Triple Gem. Often people use this as a checklist to determine if they are ready to attain or have attained to fruit of the path. Or apply it as a basis for how to identify a stream enterer. A table of these seven knowledges for easy reference has been posted to our YT Community page and to Telegram (https://t.me/suttameditationseries/633) This follows on from an earlier Dhamma Q&A on "How can you identify a stream enterer?" - https://bit.ly/3Y5vtDe (video) or https://bit.ly/3UEDoVe (audio) For the Full Unduvap Poya Dhamma session AND the list of sutta references (on 7 December 2022) - https://bit.ly/3h5EKue (YT video) or https://bit.ly/3VZmTUQ (audio) The video of this Extract has also been published to the Sutta Meditation YouTube channel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loKrTXAbY3s Blessings of the Triple Gem. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. This is the FULL DHAMMA SESSION, conducted on UNDUVAP POYA (7 December 2022) via zoom, on "THE STRENGTH OF LIVING IN HARMONY AS SUPPORT TO DEVELOP THE NOBLE PATH". We examine the Kosambiya Sutta (MN 48) and the Buddha's teaching to the quarreling monks of Kosambi. The purpose of examining this particular teaching from the Buddha is to understand the importance of living in harmony if we wish to develop the non-greed, non-hate and non-delusion path, the Noble Eightfold Path. When we live in disharmony, we decline because we remain imbued with sensuality and unwholesome states (physical, verbal and mental) and we cultivate the wrong path. This makes it difficult and obstructive, to developing the Noble Path. In this Dhamma session, we cover: — Overview of the Kosambiya Sutta (MN 48) — “Deep dive” into the Buddha's teaching in the Kosambiya Sutta (MN 48) and the advice on developing the six principles of cordiality — Overview of the fruit of stream entry – readiness to realise and to maintain — Buddha's verse with reference to the Kosambi monks from Dhammapada verse 6 Some of the suttas covered directly or indirectly in this session: — Kosambi Jātaka (Ja 428) — Kosambakakkhandhaka (Kd 10) — Upakkilesa Sutta (MN 128) — Vatthūpama Sutta (MN 7) — Karaniyametta Sutta (Snp 1.8) — Anumāna Sutta (MN 15) — Mahācattārīsaka Sutta (MN 117) — Dvedhāvitakka Sutta (MN 19) — Samādhibhāvanā Sutta (SN 22.5) — Asubha Sutta (AN 4.163) — Suttavebhaṅgiya (Pe 9) — Avijjā Sutta (AN 10.61) — Thapati Sutta (SN 55.6) — Pālileyyakagamanakathā (Kd 10.5) — Kosambaka Vatthu (Dhp 6) The video of this talk has been published to the Sutta Meditation YouTube channel - https://bit.ly/3h5EKue Blessings of the Triple Gem. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. This is the FULL DHAMMA SESSION, conducted on ILL POYA (7 November 2022) via zoom, on "THE MAGNITUDE OF SAMSARA". We examine the Anamataggavagga or Chapter of Linked Discourses on the Undiscoverable Beginning (Saṁyutta Nikāya 15). The purpose of examining this particular chapter is to gain a stronger understanding of the bigger picture and context for the Buddha's teachings. If we understand this aspect of saṁsāra, this infinite vastness conveyed by the Buddha, then we will also understand our bondage to infinite dukkha or suffering if we remain bound through our kamma to continued existence in saṁsāra. We connect to the Four Noble Truths, the development of wisdom and the link to dependent origination. A real sense of urgency can arise, when we meditate on the powerful, and sometimes visceral similes taught by the Buddha in this chapter. *Note - the two meditation periods have been excluded or cut from this recording. In this Dhamma session, we cover: — Introduction to Anamataggavagga (SN 15) including dependent origination and link to spiritual faculties — “Deep dive” into most of the Buddha's similes — Meditation in the Assu Sutta (SN 15.3) and Puggala Sutta (SN 15.10) — Verses of Sumedhā Therī Some of the suttas covered directly or indirectly in this session: — Gotama Sutta (SN 12.10) — Avijjā Sutta (SN 56.17) — Samādhi-bhāvanā Sutta (SN 22.5) — Āpaṇa Sutta (SN 48.50) — Byasana Sutta (AN 5.130) — Bhoga Sutta (AN 5.227) — Gavampati Sutta (SN 56.30) — Dutiyasāriputta Sutta (SN 55.5) — Vipallāsa Sutta (AN 4.49) — Vitthāra Sutta (AN 4.162) — Saṁsappanīya Sutta (AN 10.216), — Karaniyametta Sutta (Snp 1.8) — Sumedhātherīgāthā (Thig 16.1) — Sumedhātherīapadāna (Thi Ap 1) Bohoma pin (much merit) to the person who requested this sutta. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. From the request to provide an EXTRACT from the Full Vap Poya Dhamma session (on 9 October 2022) explaining how we enter and develop the four jhānas by contemplating the instructions in the Dvedhāvitakka Sutta (MN 19). In this segment we: — go through some of the technical aspects of entering the four jhāna concentrations; — explain the meaning behind some of the key pali words and processes that are associated with each jhāna; — go through what is abandoned (or ceased) and what is attained for each jhāna concentration; and — answer the question on "how do we know we have entered each jhāna concentration?" It is important to know the process of HOW we enter and abide in the four jhāna concentrations, rather than simply the attainment of jhāna concentration. And to train in these higher concentrations, so we attain them without trouble or difficulty, in order to progress and develop higher wisdom. **Please note - we are examining this teaching from the Buddha with the aspiration for the supramundane development of the Noble Eightfold Path** For the Full Vap Poya Dhamma session AND the list of sutta references (on 9 October 2022) - https://bit.ly/3CLFXz8 (YT video) or https://bit.ly/3RNCGTW (audio) Bohoma pin (much merit) to the person who made the request The video of this Extract has also been published to the Sutta Meditation YouTube channel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Rm3u1pjpQQ Blessings of the Triple Gem. The 3 short meditation sessions from today's session are INCLUDED in this episode. The first was to lift the mind and the other two were to put into practise the insight pathway taught by the Buddha. You are invited to practise the short meditations we undertook during this Vesak Dhamma session. **Please note - we are examining this teaching from the Buddha with the aspiration for the supramundane development of the Noble Eightfold Path** In this Dhamma session, we cover: — Why the Buddha taught the spiritual life? — Background and context to the Mahāsāropama Sutta (MN 29) — Mapping to the Higher Training (including the Noble Eightfold Path) — What enables us to develop to fullness? — “Deep dive” into the Simile of the Heartwood, including examples for each of the benefits and how we can go wrong, other sutta references, some meditation practice Our earlier Dhamma session on "The Danger of Gain, Honour and Praise" can be also be listened to here - https://bit.ly/3yF68px Some of the suttas covered directly or indirectly in this session: — Aggidattabrāhmaṇavatthu (Dhp 190-192) — Brahmacariya Sutta (AN 4.25) — Dutiyajananakuhana Sutta (Iti 36) — Vajjiputta Sutta (AN 3.84) — Kalahavivādasuttaniddesa (Mnd 2/Mnd 11) — Paṭhamasikkhattaya Sutta (AN 3.89) — Dussīla Sutta (AN 5.24) — Dāruṇa Sutta (SN 17.1) — Pañcarathasata Sutta (SN 17.36) — Ghaṭikāra Sutta (MN 81) — Sekha-patipadā Sutta (MN 53) — Paṭhamahatthaka Sutta (AN 8.23) — Paṭhamaugga Sutta (AN 8.21) — Dutiyaugga Sutta (AN 8.22) — Dutiyagilāna Sutta (SN 35.75) — Rathavinīta Sutta (MN 24) — Sīlabbata Sutta (AN 3.78) — Saṅghabheda, (Pli Tv Bu Vb Ss 10) — Samādhibhāvanā Sutta (AN 4.41) — Samādhibhāvanā Sutta (SN 22.5) — Patisambhidamagga (Ps 1) — Sāmaññaphala Sutta (DN 2) — Avakujja Sutta (AN 3.30) — Sambahulasīlādisampannabhikkhuvatthu (Dhp 271-272) An electronic copy of "Summary of the Simile of the Heartwood" and the "Insight pathway to contemplate for each benefit of spiritual life" from the Mahāsāropama Sutta (MN 29), as discussed in this Dhamma Session has been posted (and pinned) to the Sutta Meditation Series Telegram channel (https://t.me/suttameditationseries) Bohoma pin to the person who requested this sutta. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. This is the FULL DHAMMA SESSION, conducted on BAK POYA (16 April 2022) via zoom, on "TAMING THE MIND". We examine the Vitakkasaṇṭhāna Sutta (MN 20), which is an important teaching by the Buddha on how to tackle blocks and challenges that come up in our meditation when we are intent on training in the higher mind (i.e. to enter and dwell in higher concentration) **Please note - this teaching from the Buddha is directed at intermediate to advanced meditators who have some experience in development of the mind, rather than beginners.** Our objective is to study the Buddha's instructions on how to tame our mind and actively work with the signs that enable us to overcome any challenges that arise from unwholesome thoughts or states, see what might be preventing us from higher concentration, and figure out what makes us “wobble” or where we find ourselves in some ways “kicked out” of those higher concentrated states, particularly in the initial stages of absorption. In this Dhamma session, we cover: — Right Intention and development of the Noble Eightfold Path (including development of mind or bhāvitā cittā) — Introduction to Vitakkasaṇṭhāna Sutta (MN 20) — What is meant by pursing the higher mind — Understanding different kinds of unwholesome thoughts and the emphasis on abandoning them — Examining the Buddha's reference to "mastery over the ways of thought" — “Deep dive” into the five signs and similes when pursuing the higher mind — Meditation / Contemplation Some of the suttas covered directly or indirectly in this session: — Mahācattārīsaka Sutta (MN 117) — Hārasampātabhūmi (Pe 7) — Kalahavivādasuttaniddesa (Mnd 2/Mnd 11) — Vajjiputta Sutta (AN 3.84) — Paṭhamasikkhattaya Sutta (AN 3.89) — Dutiyasikkhattaya Sutta (AN 3.90) — Paṁsudhovaka Sutta (AN 3.101) — Vitakka Sutta (Iti 80) — Vassakāra Sutta (AN 4.35) — Vatthūpama Sutta (MN 7) — Karaṇīyametta Sutta (Snp 1.8) — Nimitta Sutta (AN 3.102) — Cūḷakammavibhaṅga Sutta (MN 135) — Katuviya Sutta (AN 3.128) — Pamādavihārī Sutta (SN 35.97) — Saṅgīti Sutta (DN 33) — Puttamaṁsa Sutta (SN 12.63) — Suttavebhaṅgiya (Pe 9) — Paṭiccasamuppāda Sutta (SN 12.1) — Padhāna Sutta (AN 4.13) — Saṁvara Sutta (AN 4.14) — Sekha-patipadā Sutta (MN 53) — Nagaropama Sutta (AN 7.67) — Pāveyyakahatthivatthu (Dhp 327) Bohoma pin to the person who requested this talk. An electronic copy of the "The Five Signs to Give Attention to and the Buddha Similes" from the Vitakkasaṇṭhāna Sutta (MN 20), discussed in this Dhamma Session has been posted (and pinned) to the Sutta Meditation Series Telegram channel (https://t.me/suttameditationseries) A VIDEO of this FULL SESSION with presentation slides has been published to the Sutta Meditation Series YouTube Channel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MI--iA79bMw Blessings of the Triple Gem.
