Avery Bumgarner composed and performed this percussive piece of music, the idea coming to him when he was sick with COVID-19. "I was thinking about all of the ways I could ‘play' my instruments without blowing air into them," Bumgarner said. “This score takes inspiration from Colombian Cumbia music, so the sounds in this piece consist entirely of ‘key clicks' on alto and tenor saxophones and are intended to imitate the percussion instruments that are typical of the genre.” Read More: https://news.ohio.edu/news/2023/04/students-original-music-underscores-creative-approach-arts-administration

Actor, Virginia circuit court judge, and OHIO School of Theater alum William T. Newman, Jr. has a full life. He thrives through his love and respect for both the law and the stage, two practices with skills that often intertwine. Earlier on this 7th day of October 2022, Judge Newman was awarded the prestigious Ohio University Alumni Association's Medal of Merit Award, a recognition of his long and robust career in both the law and on the stage, in television and on the big screen. OHIO's College of Fine Arts sat down with Judge Newman for an intimate interview about his career arc in both the law and in the theater arts. Listen to how he got bitten by the acting bug, what makes him nervous (spoiler: not much!), and how he sees trust as being central in both the courtroom and on the stage.

The Oxford Language dictionary describes lacuna, a noun, as “an unfilled space, an interval, a gap.” The exhibition called, LACUNA, at the Kennedy Museum of Art, touches on that same spirit, but from a very different direction. Artists Mateo Galvano and C. David Russell, explain why in this episode of Talking Studio. Ohio Today wrote about LACUNA when it first launched in June of 2019 at the New Currents Exhibition in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It can be found online here: https://ohiotoday.org/lacuna. LACUNA is showing at the Kennedy Museum of Art at Ohio University in Athens until March 6, 202. Gallery hours can be found online here https://www.ohio.edu/museum/visit.
The Ohio Valley Center for Collaborative Arts at Ohio University, or CoArts, is a relatively new center and it's been busy. Of its many endeavors, one is to support programs that serve the healing of those living in the Appalachian Ohio region and beyond by bringing art into the healthcare space. A program like this was carried out at Serenity Grove Women's Recovery House, a home in the region for women in recovery from addiction. Talking Studio gathered the CoArts staff and two artists who worked with the women to learn about the program. What emerged is this episode of the College of Fine Arts' podcast, Talking Studio, called, “Embracing monsters.” It unpacks how using the expression of art informs the intense—and often painful—process of healing. This episode features CoArts' Angela Sprunger and OHIO College of Fine Arts faculty and artists Lindsey Martin and Jessica Fletcher The original song, “Soar,” was written by the women at Serenity Grove and performed by Jessica Fletcher. On November 13 Tantrum Theater, Ohio University’s professional theater, begins streaming This is Not What I Expected When I Imagined a Republic, a historical triptych, that is part dance-theatre, part card game, and part good old kitchen drama. The play mythologies of what it means to be a republic(an), how that’s changed over time, and what to do when you discover your supposedly future life partner has just voted Republican. And you are not “a Republican.” Talking Studio talked with the play’s author Daria Miyeko Marinelli, director ameenah kaplan, and Tantrum Theater’s Artistic Director Michael Lincoln to get a behind-the-scenes look at how this play took shape in the age of streamed and Zoomed content, yet still feels like live theater.
A sense of play and collaboration without judgement is at the core of the art of improvisational performance. Improve can teach us about ourselves, about the ways of others, and about trust. But does it work in the virtual setting? In this episode of Talking Studio, I talk with Tantrum Theater’s Josh Coy, the Columbus-based Nest Theater co-founders Tara DiFrancisco and Rance Rizutto, and Passion Works Studio’s Nancy Epling about an improv collaboration, together with Ohio University’s School of Theater students, that has brought artists together virtually to learn from one another…and to play. An Iliad. A well-known work that’s a modern-day retelling of Homer’s classic written for the stage. Except…when there’s a pandemic and theaters are closed. What to do. In this episode of Talking Studio, Director Emily Penick https://www.emilypenick.com/ shares how she found a way to turn an epic stage drama into a film shot outdoors with actors and crew socially distanced and wearing masks when not in scene. Penick, who earned a master’s degree in directing from Ohio University’s School of Theater, is joined by Anastasiia Kulikalova, https://www.instagram.com/si.kulikalova/ the film’s director of Photography and current master’s degree candidate in the University’s School of Film. Together they unpack how the project came together in a very shortened amount of time, and what the work means to them. Brian Evans, associate professor of Performance in the School of Theater at Ohio University's College of Fine Art, received the coveted University Professor Award this spring, an award program run by and voted on solely by OHIO students. A lover of the academic theater practice since his college days, Evans joined OHIO's teaching ranks in 2007 to train and mentor budding student actors with an 11-year-long robust acting career under his belt. "What I really loved about the university setting was the…perfect world that it is," Evans says. "We are able to produce what we want to produce. We're able to do the kind of work we want to do. We're able to listen to the students and do the work they want to do. and that isn't always the case in the professional world." The College of Fine Arts' podcast Talking Studio caught up with Evans in this episode, "Building an ensemble," to unpack his approach to guiding student actors into the artist they will become—even in the confines of the virtual-only space required because of the COVID-19 pandemic—while still maintaining his professional acting career.
OHIO faculty Chris Thompson and John Sabraw unpack how students from OHIO and two Japanese universities are forming a bridge between cultures through art making. Students from Chubu and Iwate Prefectural Universities met with OHIO College of Fine Arts and College of Arts & Science students in January and generated a creative spark for the making of a mural that will adorn a 48-foot seawall in Tarō, Japan, a project conceived in September 2019 called the U.S.-Japan Global Engagement Project. Tarō resides in the Iwate Prefecture which was devastated by a 2011 tsunami that claimed more than 15,000 lives. More than just a massive art project, the collaboration gives the students real-world experience in and through the arts while honoring the victims and highlighting the region’s environmental fallout that has ensued.
When MFA playwright student Skye Robinson Hillis learned about "The Martha Mitchell Effect," listed in the DSM IV and named after the wife of John Mitchell, President Nixon's confidante, a play began to take root. This episode of Talking Studio takes us on a journey of how aspiring playwrights like Robinson Hillis take a seemingly insignificant fact from history and creates a play that disrupts the historic status quo.
A new feature project by award-winning OHIO Eminent Scholar of Film Rajko Grlić recently received major funding from the Croatian Audiovisual Centre. The College of Fine Arts interviewed Grlić to learn more about the project and about his approach to filmmaking. The film uses the main theme of the novel, ON THE EDGE OF REASON, written by Miroslav Krleza, to build an almost completely new story placed in the present. The script is co-written by Ante Tomic, best-selling author in Croatia, and Grlić. Support for the script’s first draft is from the College’s Dean’s Development Grant. Two of Grlić’s films, "The Constitution" and "That Summer of White Roses" are on Amazon Prime. This interview was recorded via a video calling platform on March 27, 2020, in Athens, Ohio, and not in person due to Ohio's stay-at-home orders in response to the corona virus pandemic. We hope you enjoy this interview regardless of the less-than-ideal sound and editing quality. Photo: Director Rajko Grlić (© Sasa Huzjak)
Welcome to the 4th episode of Talking Studio. An audio discussion series making space for the creative work and experiences of students in the College of Fine Arts at Ohio University. Meet three students of theater who share overlapping experiences working on stage productions at Ohio University, the Tantrum Theater, and beyond. Allison Epperson is in her final year in the M.F.A. directing program at Ohio and brings an infectious energy to this conversation. Scenic designer, Jacob Brown came to graduate school after what he describes as a work-induced heart-attack to find a more rewarding path in stage design. Sophomore in the Honors Tutorial College and B.F.A. theater major, Olivia Rocco has a focus in directing and devising, and a love for teaching yoga. This conversation occurred in a small hidden sound recording space in Kantner Hall, on the Campus of Ohio University, Athens, OH. A board-certified music therapist and musician, graduate student Caitlin Kraus discusses the burning question driving her in pursuit of a duel masters degree in both Music Therapy and Clinical Counseling Education: “How can we use music to help patients reframe their story? How can music be that catalyst?" This conversation occurred in a music practice room in Glidden Hall, in Athens, OH. PODCAST MUSIC: The intro song today is "Dead Man," from "Waiting for the World," the debut 7” by Caitlin Kraus on Keeled Scales records.
