A new school year is about to start in many parts of the country. Going back to school can be exciting, but some students may dread it. Perhaps they are struggling with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, abbreviated ADHD. How can you recognize the symptoms of this problem? What are the most common misconceptions? In short, what are we still getting wrong about ADHD? When we talk about distractibility, trouble missing deadlines, forgetting where you left your keys, it is easy to relate. Likewise, when we look at kids with wiggles and short attention spans, do we see a child with ADHD or just a normal youngster? What constitutes ADHD? Does everyone have it, or is it an all-or-nothing condition? Expert John Mitchell explains that many people have some symptoms from time to time, but once a person is suffering from enough that it is affecting their ability to function, that is when a yes-or-no ADHD diagnosis is made. At The People's Pharmacy, we strive to bring you up‑to‑date, rigorously researched insights and conversations about health, medicine, wellness and health policies and health systems. While these conversations intend to offer insight and perspective, the content is provided solely for informational and educational purposes. Please consult your healthcare provider before making any changes to your medical care or treatment. How You Can Listen You could listen through your local public radio station or get the live stream at 7 am EST on Saturday, August 29, 2026, through your computer or smart phone (wunc.org). What We Get Wrong About ADHD One of the most common misconceptions about ADHD is that it primarily affects little boys who can't sit still. While hyperactivity can certainly make a parent or a teacher uncomfortable, the inattention aspect of ADHD could be more disabling in many instances. Moreover, girls too may suffer with ADHD. Though they are less likely to be hyperactive, they can often have difficulty focusing. Another popular myth about ADHD is that it is a pediatric condition. People think kids grow out of it. What we are beginning to see with more research into ADHD is that some people learn effective coping skills they can use as adults. Nonetheless, many older people who were not recognized as having ADHD when they were children may discover that their impulsivity and lack of follow-through, accompanied by anxiety, depression or migraines perhaps, could be a manifestation of this disorder. Failing to recognize the suffering of neurodivergent adults is another thing we get wrong about ADHD. How Do You Treat ADHD? A third misunderstanding about ADHD is that prescribing a stimulant medication is the only treatment necessary. While drugs such as methylphenidate (Concerta, Ritalin) or mixed amphetamines (Adderall) can be really helpful, there is a saying in the ADHD community: the pills don't teach skills. They do allow a person to focus well enough to learn some new skills they will need. Nonpharmacological approaches are important in conjunction with prescription medicine. However, adolescents with ADHD are much less likely to turn to drugs of abuse if they are taking properly prescribed stimulant medicines in the context of a thoughtful treatment plan. What Is the Role of Emotional Regulation in ADHD? Pediatric ADHD expert Paul Rosen describes another assumption that we can get wrong about ADHD. A child may appear to be doing fine, bringing home As, getting along well in school. But he describes “duck syndrome,” in which you see a duck gliding along the surface of the water. The motion looks effortless, but the duck is paddling like crazy. If it gets into an eddy or a current that's too strong, it can't keep up. These students are working much harder than is apparent and at some point, they encounter demands they can't meet. How will they respond to that frustration? Trouble with emotional regulation is not always part of the ADHD picture, but it isn't unusual, either. Some kids with ADHD respond pretty much as other youngsters do, but some seem like a super bouncy ball. Their emotions go very high and very low quickly, but they bounce back quickly as well. Still other children may be more like volcanoes. When faced with frustration, they explode, and it may take them many hours to return to baseline. Focusing on Warm and Fuzzies Parents sometimes assume that impulsive or explosive behavior is willful, but that is another thing we often get wrong about ADHD. Most of the time, such behavior is emotional. The child wants to be a “good kid” but may not know how to deal with these extreme emotions. Dr. Rosen recommends unconditional positive attention. He suggests that when parents tuck their ADHD children into bed at night, they appreciate one thing the child has done that day and one aspect of the child, separate from the behavior, that is wonderful. This kind of affirmation can help a youngster keep striving for the skills they will need. (In fact, it sounds like a helpful idea for any parent and child, regardless of whether either of them has ADHD.) This Week’s Guests John T. Mitchell, PhD Dr. John Mitchell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University. His research and clinical work are focused on ADHD across the lifespan. He has published peer-reviewed articles and chapters on longitudinal outcomes and the treatment of ADHD, as well as recently co-authoring Mindfulness for Adult ADHD: A Clinician’s Guide. Listen to the Podcast The podcast of this program will be available Monday, August 31, 2026, after broadcast on Aug. 29. In this week's podcast, Dr. Mitchell explains why people without ADHD react so differently to stimulant medication. He also describes the multimodal treatment ADHD study for which he served as investigator. What kind of career counseling could help young people find a good fit with the way their brains work? We also discuss the benefits and the challenges of mindfulness as a complementary approach to ADHD treatment.  You can stream the show from this site and download the podcast for free. On this day, 8 August 1883, over 3,000 people attended a benefit ball and concert for striking telegraphers in New York's Madison Square Garden. A procession of 800 striking workers, mostly employees of Western Union fighting for equal pay for men and women and an eight-hour day, were led into the ballroom by John Mitchell and Minnie Swan, who had emerged as key organisers of the strike in the city. They were serenaded by local regimental bands who had volunteered to play. The strike was later defeated, although Mitchell and Swan became romantically involved during the dispute and were subsequently married. Our work is only possible because of support from you, our listeners on patreon. Topographic Topics – July 2026 The big news driving the episode is Asia's upcoming album *Indigo*, releasing November 6th via Frontiers Music. It will be their first studio album since 2014, which makes the announcement genuinely surprising and worth paying attention to. Joe shares his deep enthusiasm for Asia across all its iterations, and the group digs into what makes this release feel significant. John Mitchell shares production duties with Geoff Downs, John Wetton receives co-writing credits on several tracks, and both Steve Howe and Mike Portnoy make guest appearances (that guest list alone is worth the conversation). Can the first single, "The Traveler Into the Light," really recapture the feel of early 1980s Asia, or is it simply the product of a band deeply immersed in its own legacy? Beyond Asia, the group also covers Steven Wilson's surprise solo album announcement, Rick Wakeman's sequel album "Return to the Red Planet," and a lengthy discussion about the apparently still-viable development of Mike Flanagan's Dark Tower adaptation. They even venture into pedal board frustrations and guitar gear. Genuinely, there is something here for every kind of progressive rock fan. Tune in and join the conversation. What if 98% of people are just winging life, and don't even know it?We don't do book episodes often on Entrepreneurs United, but Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People earned one. We brought back returning guest John Mitchell, founder of the Center for Advanced Leadership of Self at the University of Texas at Austin, to go through the book habit by habit with hosts John St. Pierre and Rich Hoffmann. In this episode, the three of them talk about which habits actually shaped how they lead, why most people are proactive in theory but not in practice, and propose the eighth habit they think Covey left out of the original book. What you'll walk away with: why John Mitchell says 98% of people are winging life instead of living it on purpose, Rich Hoffmann's data backed case for why listening beats talking when it comes to real influence, John St. Pierre's take on Covey's big rocks story and why it still beats every modern productivity hack, the space between stimulus and response and why that pause is the real secret to self-control, and the eighth habit John Mitchell thinks Covey left out: learning to control your subconscious autopilot. If it's been a while since you've read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, this episode is your reminder to pick it back up.Connect with John MitchellHosted by John St. Pierre and Rich Hoffmann, Entrepreneurs United is built for founders and leaders who want straight talk on building businesses that actually work. Yellow Stripes and Dead Armadillos: Is Ben Barnes the Last Moderate Texan Democrat?

“I could not get under oath and swear that I know exactly how Kennedy died in Dallas.” — Ben Barnes, who helped advance JFK's fatal Texas tripIn Texas, there's nothing in the middle of the road, Jim Hightower famously quipped, but yellow stripes and dead armadillos. But Ben Barnes has spent seven decades disproving him. Elected as a Democratic moderate to the Texas legislature at 21, Speaker of the Texas House at 26, and lieutenant governor at 30, Barnes was LBJ's premier protégé and has known every president from Kennedy to Trump. Now 87, he has distilled all his centrist wisdom into Get It Done: Seven Decades of Lessons from a Political Legend.Get It Done is more than just a Texan story. Barnes spent six weeks advancing JFK's fatal 1963 Dallas trip and breakfasted with the president in Fort Worth on the morning of the assassination. He confesses that the Warren Commission “did not get it entirely correct” and notes that the experienced hunter John Connally, who rode in the Presidential limo, always insisted there were four shots, not three. Then there's the equally historic scene at the White House on the day LBJ signed the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Pen in hand, Johnson looked a dozen young Southern Democrats — Barnes among them — straight in the eye and told them he'd just signed away Dixie. “What I'm doing today is probably going to turn the South Republican for thirty or forty years,” LBJ confessed with astonishing prescience. The dirty trickster Richard Nixon, meanwhile, ended Barnes' electoral career. You can hear it on the tapes — Nixon ordering his attorney general, John Mitchell, to “get something on Barnes” before the Texas Democrat got to be governor. Years later, fresh from prison, Mitchell invited Barnes to lunch, apologized over a bowl of spaghetti, then dropped dead on a Washington sidewalk three months later.Barnes forgave Mitchell. He is less forgiving of the current administration, which he says is hammering the final nail into the coffin of LBJ's Voting Rights Act. In the recent Texas Senate runoffs, only seven percent of voters showed up. Seven. Barnes remembers, aged three, watching pickup trucks packed with young men rolling toward the recruiting stations the morning after Pearl Harbor. That generation died for the country. This one, the very alive Texan armadillo quipped, could at least vote to protect American democracy.Five Takeaways•       Four Shots, Not Three — But No Conspiracy. Barnes advanced JFK's Texas trip and was at the Fort Worth breakfast on the morning of the assassination. The Warren Commission, he believes, did not get it entirely correct: Connally, a hunter, swore the single-bullet ricochet was a physical impossibility and always counted four shots. Yet Barnes dismantles the grand-plot theories with logistics — Oswald started at the Book Depository thirty days before a motorcade route that wasn't fixed until six days prior, so he could not have known the president would pass. Ted Kennedy assured him before his death that nothing of importance remains unreleased in the files. Sixty years of phone calls from theorists later, Barnes will not swear under oath that he knows how Kennedy died.•       The Hostility Began in Los Angeles. The LBJ–Bobby Kennedy feud, in Barnes's telling, started at the 1960 convention, when Bobby went to Johnson's hotel room to talk him out of accepting the vice presidency his brother had just offered. The wound never healed — not through the vice presidency, not through the White House years with Bobby as attorney general. The counter-example was Ted Kennedy, who voted for the civil rights bills, kept a genuine affection for Johnson, and told Barnes three weeks before his own death what a great president LBJ had been.•       “This Will Turn the South Republican.” On the day he signed the Voting Rights Act, Johnson looked a dozen young Southern officeholders — Barnes among them — in the eye and told them the bill would probably turn the South Republican for thirty or forty years, and that they would have to work and tell the story over and over again. The prophecy held: Texas, Barnes says, is now the reddest state in America. And the administration's new voting legislation, he warns, would be the final nail in the coffin of Johnson's greatest achievement — making it harder for everyone to vote, and hardest of all for minorities.•       “Get Something on Barnes”: Nixon's Vendetta and Mitchell's Spaghetti. Furious that Barnes had helped Humphrey carry Texas in 1968 — and alarmed that he was outpolling every Democrat in the state — Nixon told John Mitchell to go to Texas and manufacture a scandal before Barnes reached the governor's mansion. It's on the tapes, and Barnes keeps copies. His electoral career ended. Years later, out of prison, Mitchell asked him to lunch, apologized over a bowl of spaghetti — “I had time to think in prison” — and died on a Washington sidewalk three months later. Barnes forgave him. The tactics, he notes, are back in fashion.•       Seven Percent. Trump, Barnes says, never prepared himself for the presidency — no student of history, bored by his intelligence briefings, and surrounded this term by a team without depth. American prestige is dwindling; NATO is non-negotiable; when America coughs, the world catches pneumonia. At home, racism has resurfaced and women's promotions to the military's top ranks are reportedly frozen. But his sharpest alarm is the emptiest statistic: seven percent turnout in the recent Texas Senate runoffs. The man who watched pickup trucks of volunteers roll toward the recruiting stations after Pearl Harbor asks only that this generation get involved — before the Republic runs out of birthdays.About the GuestBen Barnes was elected to the Texas legislature at 21, became the youngest Speaker of the Texas House at 26, and the youngest lieutenant governor in Texas history at 30. LBJ's “premier protégé,” he has spent the subsequent decades as a consultant, fundraiser, and Democratic power broker, helped establish the LBJ School of Public Affairs, and is founder and CEO of the Ben Barnes Group in Austin. His new book, written with David Ritz, is Get It Done: Seven Decades of Lessons from a Political Legend (Grand Central Publishing, July 14, 2026).References:•       Get It Done: Seven Decades of Lessons from a Political Legend by Ben Barnes with David Ritz (Grand Central Publishing, July 14, 2026). Doris Kearns Goodwin: “When a gifted storyteller has a great story to tell, the result is magic.”•       The Warren Commission — the 1964 report whose three-shot conclusion John Connally, a hunter who was wounded in the motorcade, never accepted.•       Jim Hightower — the Texas populist who actually coined “nothing in the middle of the road but yellow stripes and dead armadillos,” a line usually credited to Ann Richards....

Quant on aime… !      Thierry Joigny AMAROK, chaque jeudi, à 20h

Most employers treat workers compensation as a line item. The ones who treat it as a strategy – investing in safety, building working relationships with their agent and carrier – end up with lower e-mods, better claim outcomes, and a team that's already prepared if an injury occurs. In this episode, MEM's John Mitchell and Richard Ollis of Ollis/Akers/Arney Insurance & Business Advisors share what that partnership looks like in practice.

In this episode, Candice sits down with John Mitchell, an entrepreneur, author, and creator of a powerful methodology designed to help people unlock higher levels of success. After decades of searching for answers, John discovered what he calls the “missing secret” behind lasting transformation and now teaches it to students and professionals looking to take control of their lives.    In this episode, they discuss: Why up to 95% of your daily actions are driven by unconscious patterns How your autopilot mindset may be limiting your success The difference between living an average life and an exceptional one Why most people only prefer success rather than truly pursuing it The power of a simple daily practice to rewire your thinking How consistency, not intensity, creates lasting transformation What it really takes to gain control of your actions and outcomes   This episode is a powerful reminder that when you learn to think differently, you begin to live differently, and that the life you want starts with the thoughts you choose every single day!   About John: John Mitchell has a fascinating journey. After spending more than 20 years as an entrepreneur, John reached age 50 realizing he wasn't as successful as he believed he should be. Determined to change that, he set out to study the top book on success, Think and Grow Rich, and apply it —word for word—to his life. In the process, John uncovered what he believes is the full secret the book alludes to and developed a simple 12-minute-a-day technique grounded in science. When he implemented this daily practice, his income increased dramatically-by 25 times! Today, John teaches this methodology at the University of Texas' McCombs School of Business and serves as a mental coach for UT's head athletic coaches, helping high performers focus on what truly moves the needle.   Podcast: The Missing Secret Podcasthttps://open.spotify.com/show/5zoO0fn3xP2in19QqVBuxP?si=014742b5859b426b Book- THE MISSING SECRET: of the Legendary Book Think and Grow Rich: And a 12-minute-a-day techniquehttps://a.co/d/61r8r2D https://thinkitbeit.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/john-mitchell-76483654/https://www.instagram.com/thinkit.beit ----- Connect with Candice Snyder! Connect With ChazMost entrepreneurs work harder.Very few reprogram how they think. In Episode 501 of Driven To Win, Chaz Wolfe sits down with John Mitchell, author of The Missing Secret of Think and Grow Rich, to unpack what Napoleon Hill hinted at but never fully explained: success is built in the subconscious.John explains why effort alone is not enough. You can grind for decades and still sabotage yourself if your internal programming does not match your goals. The real shift happens when your identity, beliefs, and emotional conditioning align with the results you say you want. They break down the “2% mindset” — the difference between those who make success a necessity and those who treat it as a preference. John also outlines his 12-minute-a-day process designed to systematically rewire the subconscious mind for confidence, clarity, and financial growth. This is not motivation. It is mental conditioning.Key Takeaways:• Success begins in subconscious programming • Most people operate from inherited belief systems • The 2% treat growth as a non-negotiable • Identity drives income • A 12-minute daily practice compounds over time • Repetition rewires belief • Internal alignment reduces self-sabotageIf you feel like you are capable of more but keep hitting invisible ceilings, this conversation will challenge how you approach mindset and performance.Connect with John Mitchell (Guest):LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-mitchell-76483654/Website:  https://thinkitbeit.com/cr/Email:  john@thinkitbeit.com Connect with Chaz Wolfe (Host):Website: http://www.gatheringthekings.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/chazwolfe/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gatheringthekings/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chaz-wolfe-86767054/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@gatheringthekingsVacation With Entrepreneurial FamiliesEntrepreneur families grow closer, dream bigger, & build legacy together. John explains why most of our daily actions are unconscious, how that silently drives our outcomes in business, relationships, and health, and how his repeatable method helps people build clarity, confidence, and intentional influence—starting with how they lead themselves. In this episode of Sharkpreneur, Seth Greene interviews John Mitchell, Entrepreneur and Professor at the University of Texas, who turned a lifetime of “average” results into extraordinary success by unlocking what Napoleon Hill left unsaid. Through his 12-minute-a-day method, John multiplied his income 25x, attracted his dream relationship, and now teaches his framework at the University of Texas and to top coaches and entrepreneurs. In this episode, he shares the full secret, the science behind it, and why only the most driven 2% are willing to apply it. Key Takeaways: → How rereading Think and Grow Rich 20 times revealed the missing half of the secret. → The role of the subconscious in controlling 95% of daily actions. → Why most people falsely believe they consciously control their choices. → The full secret: envisioning in detail with emotion every day. → The three stages of transformation: control, confidence, and automatic right actions. At 50, John Mitchell realized he wasn't as successful as he had hoped, prompting him to turn to Think & Grow Rich, the world's most renowned success book, read by over 150 million people. While the book reveals a secret to success, John uncovered the full secret and developed a groundbreaking 12-minute daily technique to apply it. As a result, his income skyrocketed 25x, surpassing the $200K he had earned annually for the previous 20 years. John's methodology, rooted in neuroscience and powered by an AI-driven algorithm, personalizes the success formula for each individual. He teaches this system at the University of Texas' McCombs School of Business and serves as the mental coach for UT's 18 head athletic coaches. John shares his powerful system in his book, The Missing Secret of the Legendary Book Think & Grow Rich, offering insights on working smarter, not harder, and rewiring the autopilot that governs 95% of our thoughts and actions. The Moon barrels through the Pleiades star cluster this evening. It’ll pass directly in front of the cluster, briefly blocking most of its stars from view. The Pleiades is the most famous of all star clusters. It’s also known as the Seven Sisters, but under dark skies – with no Moon in the way – you might actually see nine stars or more. But that’s only the beginning. The cluster contains more than a thousand stars. In fact, it was the first cluster to be recognized as a cluster – a group that’s moving through the galaxy together. That recognition came in 1767. John Mitchell, a clergyman and scientist, was looking at several tightly packed groups of stars. He studied the Pleiades in the greatest detail. And he calculated that there was only a one-in-500,000 chance that the grouping could be random. Instead, something had to be holding the stars together. His idea was confirmed when astronomers measured the motions of the cluster’s stars. They’re all moving in the same direction, and at the same speed. Today, we know that’s because they were born together, from a single giant complex of dust and gas. They’re bound to each other by their mutual gravitational pull. But they won’t stay together. The cluster is being pulled apart by the gravity of the rest of the galaxy. So the Pleiades probably will dissipate in about 250 million years – with its member stars going their own way. As more and more information is revealed and uncovered, the January 6th narrative seems to fall apart completely. Christopher Wray lied about political bias within the organization and Wray deployed 247 FBI agents in plain clothes to conduct "crowd control." The timeline and purpose of the pipe bombs planted at the DNC and RNC seems to be another false narrative John Solomon has uncovered. Were the bombs intended to create a violent narrative on Donald Trump supporters and the MAGA movement? Kash Patel is making good on his promise of transparency and accountability, fighting to regain the public's trust in the FBI. Today is the day of the Great NBA Reset! Basketball has fallen from its once esteemed place among sports. Now it's full of entitled children who will sell out in a heartbeat for the bag. We have no one to blame but ourselves. Have no fear, though, because Jason Whitlock is here. On today's special episode of "Fearless," Jason, joined by YouTuber and NBA analyst Jay Skapinac (Skap Attack), unpacks his plan to save the NBA from its oncoming doom. Whitlock's plan fixes not only the regular season but also the off-season. Could this be the lifeboat the NBA has been looking for? Or will the league go down with the sinking ship? It's about time the NBA gives back more power to the fan, and we at "Fearless" have the answer. Later in the show, Jason and Skap address Shedeur Sanders' and Travis Hunter's jersey retirement at Colorado. Did both of them have noteworthy careers to warrant this level of praise? Paige Bueckers is the official No. 1 overall draft pick by the Dallas Wings at the WNBA draft, but that isn't even the news of the night. Paige and one of her UCONN teammates in attendance seem to be pretty close. Rumors spread about how deep their relationship really is. Maybe this is why the WNBA holds Bueckers in higher regard than Caitlin Clark. Finally, Jason reacts to a sound bite from "The Karen Hunter Show" of former journalist turned social justice activist John Mitchell, who has some words to say about Jason. Mitchell is very outspoken about his relationship with Stephen A. Smith. Could this mean that Whitlock lives rent-free in SAS's head?
