Most religious leaders are quick to draw boundaries around who belongs and who doesn't — but Jesus does the opposite. Today, we explore how Jesus' scandalous love, through table fellowship and acceptance of sinners, flips the Old Testament and religious norms upside down to invite everyone into God's salvation. You'll discover how his approach to holiness, mercy, and inclusion challenges even the most revered traditions and power structures of his time. Join us as we break down the radical difference between the Pharisees' method of separation and Jesus' revolutionary method of association. We dive deep into Luke's stories—from calling Levi (Matthew) as a tax collector, to meals with sinners, to his confrontations around purity laws—revealing that Jesus' core strategy is connection before correction. You'll learn why sharing a meal signified trust, acceptance, and kinship, and why Jesus' table fellowship scandalized the religious elite. You'll also explore how Jesus' method of calling people—before their repentance—prefigures the radically inclusive way of the early church. We examine how Jesus embodies holiness through proximity and love rather than separation, and how his model of acceptance exposes the Pharisaic trap of moral boundary-setting.Chapters:00:00 - Welcome and episode overview on Jesus' countercultural critique02:25 - Seth Erie's adventurous week at King's Island and family stories05:00 - Transition into spiritual and religious themes, setting up Luke's context09:00 - Background on Jewish education: from elementary to rabbinic tracks12:00 - Analyzing Matthew (Levi) as a typical candidate for Jesus' revolutionary call15:00 - Jesus' approach to unclean persons and the significance of table fellowship17:00 - The Pharisees' goal of resurrection and their focus on separation and purity19:00 - How Pharisees fence the law and practice holiness through exclusion22:00 - Jesus' practice of embodying holiness through association and acceptance26:00 - The social implications of table fellowship as an act of love and belonging30:00 - Jesus' response to accusations: eating and drinking with sinners as a declaration of sanction33:00 - The danger of legalism and the importance of Jesus' inclusive love36:00 - Jesus' challenge to religious leaders: Who belongs at the table?39:00 - Theologically interpreting Jesus' claim to forgive sins and the authority of the church45:00 - How Old Testament motifs connect to Jesus' revolutionary love52:00 - Reapplying these insights into contemporary church practices and boundaries58:00 - Conclusion: Embracing Jesus' love as the foundation for genuine communityAs always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue. This episode explores what Scripture actually says about food, freedom, and caring for the body. The Bible does not treat medically necessary or health-based food avoidance as sin. Instead, it emphasizes stewardship, wisdom, self-control, and honoring God with your body. While the New Testament removes ceremonial food restrictions, it does not require people to eat everything indiscriminately. Rather than condemning dietary limits, Scripture consistently calls for honoring God with your body and recognizing that something may be permitted yet still not be beneficial to you personally.IntroductionIs Plant-Based the Ideal Diet Based on Biblical Doctrine?Body as a Temple and You as a StewardBiblical Mentions of Food, Drunkards, Glutton and SinPaul and the Need of Discipline, Self-Control and the Fruit of the SpiritThoughts on CommunionRomans 14, The Weak and the StrongReal Talk: What Really Matters with Faith_____EPISODE RESOURCES - Is Plant-Based the Ideal Christian Diet- My Faith Journey - Jesus and Wellness Article - Did Jesus Eat Meat Article - Stewarding the Body as God's Temple (1 Corinthians 6:19–20, 1 Corinthians 3:16–17) - Not Everything Is Beneficial (1 Corinthians 6:12, 1 Corinthians 10:23)- What Enters the Body (Proverbs 23:20–21, Proverbs 25:16, Philippians 3:19- Acting According to Conscience (Romans 14:14–23, Romans 14:2–3 1 Corinthians 8)- Self-Control as a Spiritual Virtue (Galatians 5:22–23, 1 Corinthians 9:27- Biblical Principle of Prudence (Proverbs 27:12, Ephesians 5:29)- The Garden of Eden Diet (Genesis 1–2) - The Daniel Diet (Daniel 1 and 10) - Old Testament Dietary Laws (Leviticus 11; Deuteronomy 14)- Jesus and the Food Laws (Matthew 5:17; Mark 7:18–19, Matthew 15:11)_____WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

When Scripture says that an elder must not be a drunkard, it speaks to more than avoiding drunkenness. It calls us to have a mature and godly relationship with the good gifts God gives. This qualification reminds us that spiritual maturity involves self-control, gratitude, and wisdom in how we use God's blessings. True Christian maturity is not found in abstaining from good things, nor in overindulging, but in enjoying God's gifts rightly—with thankfulness, restraint, and dependence on him.
In this hard-hitting follow-up, author Medha ji dismantles pop-culture myths around the Mughals and revisits why Ch. Shivaji Maharaj's revolution mattered. She challenges romanticized screen portrayals (Salim the “hero,” Akbar the “liberal”) with court chronicles and references, then contrasts them with Ch. Shivaji's governance—protecting civilians, punishing molestation, and easing agrarian burdens. We also examine the human cost of imperial monuments—extraction from farmers, enslavement, famine—and ecological shifts like poppy displacing native crops, alongside Jahangir's own tally of mass hunts. Finally, we address textbook narratives that blur the Maratha handover to the British—and why remembering accurately matters now. This is a special edition when The Bureau meets Jason Woodbury of Aquarium Drunkard for a joint transmission. Los Angeles-based online music magazine Aquarium Drunkard is a one-of-a-kind map to the sprawling and often overwhelming landscape of independent music. Founded in 2005 and piloted for over twenty years by Justin Gage, it has served as a curator, a passionate advocate, and a community for those seeking sounds beyond the mainstream. The Aquarium Drunkard podcast - Transmissions - hosted by Jason Woodbury, has become a massive resource for deep dives into music and culture via conversations and with an amazing range of musicians and cultural figures including Jeff Bridges, Jim Jarmusch, John Lurie, Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, Devendra Banhart, Lee Ranaldo, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Shirley Collins, Gina Birch of the Raincoats and many, many more. Jason and I decided to make a joint transmission to talk about Aquarium Drunkard and Bureau of Lost Culture, and why we do it. As well as writing for AQ, Jason writes for Pitchfork and Stereogum, is the creative director of WASTOIDS audio network, makes radiophonic sound collage, and he is a musician himself, so, of course, one of the first questions I ask him his how he gets it all done - especially as he has two dogs at his home in the Sonoran desert. There is a bit of mutual back scratching, but we soon get onto the much more important topics of: the best time for creative work, not eating in your twenties, smoking, dreaming, the collective unconscious, David Lynch who really owns The Beatles song Yesterday, AI, consciousness, the most emotional moments from shows, the power of conversation and storytelling, who we'd really like to interview and what's next..

Written during the plague in London in 1667. "Oh what havoc doth the Plague make amongst Men's Bodies! And what slaughter is Sin making amongst Men's Souls! Oh how fast are Men passing into Eternal torments, when the Plague cometh and catcheth the Drunkard, the Swearer,in his known Impiety, and the Hypocrite in his close hypocrisy! Bid 2023 goodbye in quizzy style! We've seared the sides and kept this episode extra juicy with off-the-wall trivia games and challenges, featuring special guests Dani Siller and Bill Sunderland from Escape This Podcast! It's an epic battle between the hemispheres in Karen's middling challenge. How does a round of Pop Quiz, Hot Shot sound? Or a round of Mop Liz, Goth Shop? Dani quizzes us on the real dangers of the animal kingdom villains, and things go upside down down under. And our trivia fate gets determined by a mysterious bag of random letters.
