In this episode, the reality of teamwork in Team RWB's Old Glory Ultra Relay is laid bare: this is not a challenge that anyone could possibly conquer alone. The logistics, physical demands, and relentless pace of a transcontinental relay require more than just individual grit—they demand a level of coordination, trust, and mutual support that only a true team can provide. Every runner, from the seasoned ultra veterans to those newer to the scene, must constantly communicate, adapt, and strategize together. Decisions about pacing, shift rotations, and even how to handle injuries or setbacks are made collectively, not in isolation. The episode makes it clear: one person's miscalculation or overexertion can jeopardize the entire team's success, and the only way forward is through unwavering collaboration and shared responsibility. Josh Kraus challenges listeners to abandon the myth of the solo hero. The Old Glory Ultra Relay is a crucible where egos are checked, and the focus shifts to the group's survival and triumph. The team's ability to pivot strategies based on terrain, weather, and the unpredictable toll on each runner's body is a testament to the necessity of collective intelligence and adaptability. Crew chiefs, support staff, and runners all play indispensable roles—no one is expendable, and no single person can carry the flag across the country alone. If you think you understand endurance, think again: this episode will force you to confront the hard truth that, in an event of this scale, individual achievement is meaningless without the power of the team. Step up, listen in, and be prepared to rethink everything you thought you knew about what it takes to accomplish something truly epic.

In this episode, I discuss with author Rick Penn-Kraus and his book "Steve McQueen The Last Interview". The inspiring true story behind Steve McQueen's last interview. In 1979 Los Angeles, a teenage high school journalist set out to do the impossible: land an interview with movie legend Steve McQueen, a man known for avoiding reporters and dodging the spotlight. What followed was a mix of bold determination, awkward courage, and a surprising yes from the King of Cool himself. It was an exclusive interview that Rolling Stone, Time, Life, Newsweek and many other magazines could not get. It turned out to be McQueen's last.

Wage stagnation, growing inequality, and even poverty itself have resulted from decades of neoliberal decision making, not the education system, writes Neil Kraus in his urgent call to action, The Fantasy Economy: Neoliberalism, Inequality, and the Education Reform Movement (Temple UP, 2023). Kraus claims the idea that both the education system and labor force are chronically deficient was aggressively and incorrectly promoted starting in the Reagan era, when corporate interests and education reformers emphasized education as the exclusive mechanism providing the citizenry with economic opportunity. However, as this critical book reveals, that is a misleading articulation of the economy and education system rooted in the economic self-interests of corporations and the wealthy. The Fantasy Economy challenges the basic assumptions of the education reform movement of the last few decades. Kraus insists that education cannot control the labor market and unreliable corporate narratives fuel this misinformation. Moreover, misguided public policies, such as accountability and school choice, along with an emphasis on workforce development and STEM over broad-based liberal arts education, have only produced greater inequality. Ultimately, The Fantasy Economy argues that education should be understood as a social necessity, not an engine of the neoliberal agenda. Kraus' book advocates for a change in conventional thinking about economic opportunity and the purpose of education in a democracy. Neil Kraus is Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls. He is the author of Majoritarian Cities: Policy Making and Inequality in Urban Politics and Race, Neighborhoods, and Community Power: Buffalo Politics, 1934-1997. Learn more about your ad choices. On WSJ's Take On the Week, co-hosts Gunjan Banerji and Telis Demos talk about the markets' reaction to the latest developments in President Trump's tariffs policies. They talk about the “buy the dip” trade and weigh in on “the stock market isn't the economy” debate. The hosts also discuss what's going on with Treasurys. Later on the show, Kris Kraus, a managing director and portfolio manager at one of the world's largest bond managers, Pimco, joins the podcast to give us a pulse check on the health of consumers, including their debt, from mortgages to auto loans. She's equally at home recording solo releases or collaborating with others in Music City (Mark Mulch, Christie Huff, Thomas Kavanaugh) or the Fox Cities (Joe Sly and Fox Menagerie). She made a statement immediately in 2018 with her dance single "Delusional" and from there she migrated into pop-tinged country where she really found her voice. How do you get out of a spiral of shame and guilt and try to make the world a better place?Today we meet Max Yeshaye Brumberg-Kraus and we're talking about the queer book that saved their life: The Once and Future King by T.H. White.Max studied classics and theatre at Beloit College, received their MA in Theology and the Arts from United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College. They are the author of The(y)ology: Mythopoetics for Queer/Trans Liberation with Punctum Press and the collection of poems Visions of Divine Love with AC Books, which brings together Julian of Norwich with Divine the Drag Queen. Their work explores memory, historiography, gender/sexuality, and myth through embodied practices.Terence Hanbury "Tim" White was an English writer. He is best known for his Arthurian novels, which were published together in 1958 as The Once and Future King. One of his best known is the first of the series, The Sword in the Stone, which was published as a stand-alone book in 1938. Despite leading a single and very private life, Sylvia Townsend Warner argued in her definitive 1967 biography of white that he was gay.The Once and Future King retells the saga of King Arthur, a fantasy classic as legendary as Excalibur and Camelot, and a poignant story of adventure, romance, and magic that has enchanted readers for generations.Connect with Maxwebsite: maxyeshaye.comfacebook: facebook.com/max.brumbergkrausinstagram: @cicadalamourFor ticket info for Incident at Peckerpah Ridge on March 21 and 22 head to: squirrelhausarts.com/eventsOur BookshopVisit our Bookshop for new releases, current bestsellers, banned books, critically acclaimed LGBTQ books, or peruse the books featured on our podcasts: bookshop.org/shop/thisqueerbookBuy your own copy of The Once and Future King: https://bookshop.org/a/82376/9780441627400Buy The(y)ology: Mythopoetics for Queer/Trans Liberation: https://bookshop.org/a/82376/9781685710866Become an Associate Producer!Become an Associate Producer of our podcast through a $20/month sponsorship on Patreon! Send us a textAudrey Cefaly streamed into the Playwright's Spotlight after I had the pleasure of seeing the production of her play Alabaster at The Fountain Theatre in Los Angles. This is first time I've had the opportunity to talk to the playwright after seeing their work. We discuss asking big questions, making changes throughout the play's evolution, how much design is on the page, knowing the rules of the card game, and refraining from hardwiring stage directions to allow creative freedom. We also delve into stripping the work down to its core, the use of hashtags, writing poetic dialogue, stillness in storytelling and other way finders, and the use of overlapping and dual dialogue. We wrap it up writing regional, the use of hypnotic language, the purpose of an artistic statements, and her toolbox of playwright vocabulary and "How to Playwright." It's a great conversation that went on for another thirty minutes after I stopped recording. Won't let that happen again. Enjoy, and be sure to go catch Alabaster at any of the theaters below.Audrey Cefaly is an alumna of the Playwrights' Arena cohort at Arena Stage, a recipient of the Walter E. Her plays have been produced by Cincinnati Playhouse, Florida Studio, Florida Rep, Gulfshore Playhouse, Signature Theatre, and many others. It was another incredible week as President Trump and team are making moves at lightning fast speed. More seems to be getting done each individual week than Biden's entire 4 years. We are headed into another big week as RFK Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard are expected to be confirmed and more foreign leaders come to America to meet with President Trump, starting with Japan. Democrats took advantage of Senate Judiciary Committee rules to delay Kash Patel's hearing another week. Kash has demonstrated a tireless commitment to truth with his investigation into the Russian hoax. As FBI Director, Kash will restore merit within the bureau and dismantle it as a weapon of the Democratic party. Joining me today is Jessica Reed Kraus, her substack House In Habit is a prevalent force within the MAGA/MAHA movement and today she shares her journey with us. Her coverage created a dedicated, loyal fan base and even Johnny Depp himself was impressed with her coverage of his case. Her shift from liberal to conservative came shortly after and she found herself with inside access into RFK Jr. With a loyal following of predominantly women, the question was would they follow her all the way to Trump as she gained the trust of the 45th and 47th president? Preorder HereAt Dark, I Have HopeIt may seem like a contradiction that someone who can write such brutal things is such a lovely and sweet human being, but I think that in this episode, we tapped into a possible reason that it's not a contradiction at all that Eric Larocca will destroy you with the most stark and frightful words, and smother you with happy thoughts when you talk to him. The truth is, we all have these dark, extreme thoughts in our minds. We have all been driving down the road and envisioning that moment where we intentionally swerve into oncoming traffic to disastrous results. It lives in all of us, these intrusive thoughts. It's what we do with those thoughts that speaks to our character. And I'd argue that it's terrifically healthy to take these thoughts that we all have, and to have a discussion about them, or to cause ourselves or others to think about them, and to understand them, and to process them. So, while a story like this book tells isn't necessarily for everyone all the time, it's a crucial story to be told, and nobody is doing it better than Eric does. And while we originally planned to talk about a book with a plot about a character that performs live burial rituals to give hopeless people a chance at rebirth, what we ended up talking about was far more human, and far more healing, and it was still about this book, because I think at the heart of this story is someone who hurts so much and cannot conceive of anything other than the weight of his own misery. High Praise for Subtle GiantsEric dedicated this novel to Daniel Kraus, and we started the episode talking about that. I love how Daniel has had such a positive impact on Eric's career and Eric as a person. I share my observation about Daniel, which is that he casts a far bigger shadow than his humble shape suggests. So if you don't know much about Mr. Kraus, I suggest you start researching. I particularly enjoyed Whalefall (read it, then listen to my interview with Daniel HERE), but he's written dozens of books including two posthumously finished coauthorings with George freakin Romero.
