For this bonus episode of The Shift, I'm delighted to welcome a very special guest: the award-winning author of ten bestselling novels, Barbara Kingsolver. Every so often, a book comes along that you want to press into the hands of everyone you meet. For me, Demon Copperhead, is one of those books. A reimagining of the Dickens classic, David Copperfield, translated to the Appalachian mountains in the midst of the opioid crisis that has gripped the area. It's funny, it's furious and its hero Demon is a character you will never ever forget. I'm not the only one who thinks so. Earlier this year Barbara was awarded a Pulitzer Prize and now she's become the first person ever to win the Women's Prize for Fiction twice (she won over a decade ago for her novel, The Lacuna). A couple of weeks ago, Barbara foolishly let me and my little mic into her Edinburgh hotel room to tell me how growing up weird, bookish and poor shaped her and how she discovered she was a so-called hillbilly. We also discussed being an introvert in an extrovert world, finding love second time around, not winning the jackpot in the mothering department and why life gets better with every decade – and at 68 and the top of her game, she's living proof. She also shares her killer packing tips and, I have to say, if you ever wanted to do a three week holiday with just a carry-on, Barbara is your woman! * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including transcripts of the podcast, please consider joining The Shift community. In this episode, we find ourselves navigating the murky depths of the massive gap in Svarfdæla saga that we call "The Big Lacuna." What happened to Thorstein Thorgnirsson when he left Sweden? Why is he feuding with someone named Ljotolf in Iceland? How did he get to Iceland? Is that even the same Thorstein or is it Thorstein's son or maybe his grandson? And what the hell is happening here!?! But never fear, we successfully steer the Saga Thing ship through the dangerous waters of the Big Lacuna and reach the other side of the saga safely. Along the way, we explore how a lacuna this big happens, what its effects are, and how scholars work to fill the empty space left in the narrative. Good times! We close out the week with Bree's all-time fave, 2004's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – and our good friend, Rachel Kellogg, has joined us! Yes, Dunst is a supporting player here, but she might be the most tragic supporting actor of all time. We discuss the timelessness of this movie, whether or not this movie is hopeful about love, how Dunst herself influenced the popular character analysis lexicon, and why Elijah Wood is the perfect Weird Lil Guy. Also, we've got a Mark Ruffalo Falling Over And/Or Dropping Things counter, Lacuna might be an absolute Mickey Mouse operation, and we've got some beef with Walk The Line.
Ash is back! Shat The Movies' "female expert" rejoins the team and breaks the millennial wall to cover her favorite movie: "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." Topics in this episode run the gamut from manic pixie dream girls to breakups to losing pets. Gene airs some personal grievances about ex-girlfriends who needed to talk "right now;" Dick questions why people are allowed to relabel their character flaws as strengths; and Ash asks if "Eternal Sunshine" is the most honest love story ever made. Does Clementine suck, or does Joel just remember her that way? How close is memory-eraser technology to becoming reality? Does Big D need to do more hallucinogens to work through childhood trauma? We explore these questions and more as Shat The Movies kicks off the Month of Mark from Minneapolis. Join Editor in Chief Emma Zhang and Managing Editor Celina Naheed as we discuss our literary magazine theme for fall 2023: Lacuna. Originating from the latin etymon Lacus, meaning “lake,” the word Lacuna is defined as an unfilled interval, or gap; as in, a gap filled with water, like the ones in history, or like our perception of the world, translation, black-out poetry, the editing process, and the diaspora experience. Chips. You love them. We love them. This episode talks about them. But when we're not talking chips, we're talking: Lacuna, a delightful 2 player abstract game from CMYK; Townscaper, Oskar Stålberg's relaxing and deeply creative build-em-up; Benji from Osprey's lovely solo recommendations Miru and VOID 1680 AM; and the challenging cooperative deck crawler Regicide from Badgers From Mars. A reimagining of the Dickens classic, David Copperfield, translated to the Appalachian mountains in the midst of the opioid crisis that has gripped the area. It's funny, it's furious and its hero Demon is a character you will never ever forget. I'm not the only one who thinks so. Earlier this year Barbara was awarded a Pulitzer Prize and now she's become the first person ever to win the Women's Prize for Fiction twice (she won over a decade ago for her novel, The Lacuna).A couple of weeks ago, Barbara foolishly let me and my little mic into her Edinburgh hotel room to tell me how growing up weird, bookish and poor shaped her and how she discovered she was a so-called hillbilly. We also discussed being an introvert in an extrovert world, finding love second time around, not winning the jackpot in the mothering department and why life gets better with every decade – and at 68 and the top of her game, she's living proof. She also shares her killer packing tips and, I have to say, if you ever wanted to do a three week holiday with just a carry-on, Barbara is your woman!* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including transcripts of the podcast, please consider joining The Shift community. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 18, 2023 is: lacuna luh-KOO-nuh noun Lacuna is a formal word that refers to a gap or blank space in something—in other words, a missing part. When used with respect to biology, lacuna also refers to a small cavity, pit, or discontinuity in an anatomical structure. // The absence of hemlock pollen from one stretch of the fossil record is a notable lacuna that suggests the tree may have once suffered from some type of blight that nearly wiped out the species. // An osteocyte is a cell that is isolated in a lacuna of bone. See the entry > Examples: “When civil war broke out in 1642, the ensuing chaos was disastrous. ... In her new novel, ‘The Manningtree Witches,' A.K. Blakemore explores the consequences of that chaos for a group of village women through the viewpoint of a narrator named Rebecca West. West, a true historical figure, was among those prosecuted in Essex. Blakemore's novel adheres to these events but fills in the lacunae in the documents.” — Lorraine Berry, The Los Angeles Times, 23 Aug. 2021 Did you know? If you find yourself drawing a blank when it comes to the definition of lacuna, it might help to imagine drawing water instead, ideally from a lake or lagoon. Lacuna, lake and lagoon all come ultimately from lacus, the Latin word for “lake.” Latin speakers modified lacus into lacuna to form a word meaning “pit,” “gap,” or “pool.” When English speakers borrowed the term in the 17th century, they used it to refer to a figurative gap in or missing portion of something, such as information or text. (Note that lacuna comes with two plural options: the Latin lacunae luh-KYOO-nee or luh-KOO-nye or the anglicized lacunas luh-KOO-nuz.) Lagoon, meanwhile, hewed closer to the Latin lacuna, referring first to a shallow sound, channel, or pond near or connected to a larger body of water, and later to a shallow artificial pool or pond.
