A reimagining of Caryl Churchill's ground-breaking and celebrated play, Top Girls, opens this week at the Liverpool Everyman which sets the play – about female ambition and success across centuries and cultures - in Merseyside. Playwright Charlotte Keatley and theatre critic Susannah Clapp discuss the play's themes and its continuing impact forty years after its premiere. Prince Harry's book Spare and the ripples it's created have led to questions about the writing and publication of memoirs. In recent years, there has been a widening of the voices encouraged to write and getting published, but what is the impact on the authors, and should there be a greater duty of care? Agent Rachel Mills and Cathy Rentzenbrink, author of The Last Act of Love, a memoir about losing her brother, join Front Row to discuss. The show must go on has long been the mantra of those working in theatre but last August, David Byrne, Artistic Director of New Diorama Theatre, made an astonishing announcement which began with the words, “The end of the show must go on” and went on to state that the theatre would be closing its doors for at least six months to allow time for an artistic reset. As New Diorama Theatre reopens, David joins Front Row to discuss what the resetting has revealed. Lesley Manville made her debut on the West End stage as a teenager in 1972, and since then has taken on a wide range of roles on stage and screen, including an Oscar-nominated performance in the film Phantom Thread. She was born in Brighton and first enjoyed performing as a singer, winning competitions with her sister. When she was 15, she commuted daily to the Italia Conti stage school in London. Her first professional role was in a West End musical, and in 1974 she joined the cast of the ITV soap opera Emmerdale Farm. After two years she decided to leave, even though the work was well paid, and return to the stage. At the Royal Court in London she appeared in some of the most critically acclaimed new plays of the 1980s including Caryl Churchill's Top Girls, and Andrea Dunbar's Rita, Sue and Bob Too. She has also enjoyed a long collaboration with the film director Mike Leigh, memorably playing the alcoholic Mary in Another Year. Her recent TV roles include starring as Cathy in the popular BBC Two sitcom Mum, for which she won a Royal Television Society Award in 2019. Caryl Churchill's play, Top Girls, was written in the early 1980s and first performed in 1982. An outstanding piece of socio-cultural satire, it was also a timely response to Neoliberalism. When Churchill wrote the play, Neoliberalism was being foisted full-stop on Britain by its enthusiastic practitioner, Margaret Thatcher. That was then. Today, her critique continues to stand tall.

Nadia took over The All Souls Procession as an Artistic Director in 1996, and founded Flam Chen Pyrotechnic Theater, which Paul joined 1998. The All Souls Procession is perhaps one of the most important, inclusive and authentic public ceremonies in North America today. The Procession had its beginnings in Tucson, Arizona in 1990 with a ceremonial performance piece created by local artist Susan Johnson. The tradition now organizes for well over 150,000 participants on the streets of downtown Tucson for a two-mile long human-powered procession that ends in the ceremonial burning of a large Urn filled with the hopes, offerings and wishes of the public for those who have passed. Myriad altars, performers, installation art, and creatives of all kinds collaborate for almost half the year to prepare their offerings for this amazing event. The All Souls Procession, and now the entire All Souls Weekend, is a celebration and mourning of the lives of our loved ones and ancestors. https://allsoulsprocession.org/ Info for 2020: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgsd3_jiBuU&feature=youtu.be Many Mouths One Stomach, a non-profit arts collective based in Tucson, AZ, is the organizing body for the Procession, and serves as a vehicle for working artists to collaborate, create, and inspire the public through Festal Culture. “Festal Culture” is the expression and fulfillment of core human needs through public celebration, ceremony, and ritual. The All Souls Procession is an event that was created to serve the public need to mourn, reflect, and celebrate the universal experience of Death, through their ancestors, loved ones, and the living. The Procession is a sanctuary for community members from all walks of life to express their grief and loss in a celebration of creative energy and rejoicing of life. When Churchill was 10, she immigrated with her family to Canada. She attended Lady Margaret Hall, a women’s college of the University of Oxford, and remained in England after receiving a B.A. in 1960. Her three earliest plays, Downstairs (produced 1958), Having a Wonderful Time (produced 1960), and Easy Death (produced 1962), were performed by Oxford-based theatrical ensembles.During the 1960s and ’70s, while raising a family, Churchill wrote radio dramas and then television plays for British television. Owners, a two-act, 14-scene play about obsession with power, was her first major theatrical endeavour and was produced in London in 1972. During her tenure as resident dramatist at London’s Royal Court Theatre, Churchill wrote Objections to Sex and Violence (1974), which, though not well-reviewed, led to her successful association with David Hareand Max Stafford-Clark’s Joint Stock Company and with Monstrous Regiment, a feminist group. Cloud 9 (1979), a farce about sexual politics, was successful in the United States as well as in Britain, winning an Obie Award in 1982 for playwriting. The next year she won another Obie with Top Girls(1982), which deals with women’s losing their humanity in order to attain power in a male-dominated environment. Softcops (produced 1984), a surreal play set in 19th-century France about government attempts to depoliticize illegal acts, was produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Serious Money (1987) is a comedy about excesses in the financial world, and Icecream(1989) investigates Anglo-American stereotypes. The former received an Obie for best new American play. The prolific Churchill continued to push boundaries. In 1997 she collaborated with the composer Orlando Gough to create Hotel, a choreographed opera or sung ballet set in a hotel room. Also that year her surrealistic short play This Is a Chair was produced. She later explored issues of identity in A Number (2002), about a father and his cloned sons. For the drama, Churchill won her third Obie for playwriting. Also in 2002 she won an Obie for sustained achievement. Her subsequent works included Love and Information (2012) and Escaped Alone (2016). Mad Mag,Pieter Bruegel the Elderhttps://www.museummayervandenbergh.be/en/page/mad-meg人物琼安教皇https://zh.wikipedia.org/zh-tw/女教宗瓊安人物耐心的格瑞塞达https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griselda_(folklore)非虚构通往维根码头之路,奥威尔https://book.douban.com/subject/26587222/电影饮食男女,李安https://movie.douban.com/subject/1291818/电影海街日记,是枝裕和https://movie.douban.com/subject/25895901/电影珠光宝气,戚其义https://movie.douban.com/subject/2996855/电影千年女优,今敏https://movie.douban.com/subject/1307394/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It’s Episode Four – “Rosellen” This is the second of four interviews I was able to conduct during rehearsals – and I was really lucky to be able to chat with Kelli Fox! Kelli is an actor/director with more than 30 years experience on stages across Canada, and in the U.S., including 13 seasons with the Shaw Festival, and 3 seasons with the Stratford Festival. From fall of 2017 to the spring of 2018 she served as Artistic Associate at Globe Theatre in Regina. Kelli has been recognized with a Jessie award (Keely & Du, Arts Club/Canstage), a Dora nomination (Top Girls, Soulpepper), a Capitol Critics Circle award (A Room of One's Own, Shaw tour), a Toronto Critic's Circle award (Penelopiad, Nightwood Theatre), as well as sharing a Dora with the Penelopiad ensemble. Kelli is currently directing Cakewalk at the Blyth Festival Theatre – which opens this Thursday, June 26th! So Happy Opening Week! Our chat was a really cool exploration of what it’s like to work with Judith Thompson, her career as a director and her first fringe show in Vancouver – there may be some singing involved…. Joining us today are three actors – Helen Thomson, Heather Mitchell and Michelle Lim Davidson – all of whom are performing in our production of Top Girls which is currently playing at Sydney Opera House. Top Girls was written by British playwright Caryl Churchill, and first performed back in 1982. Margaret Thatcher was in power, the term “glass ceiling” had only just been coined and the new hit self-help book for women was Helen Gurley Brown’s “Having It All”. Top Girls explores all this in some remarkable and unpredictable ways. Top Girls, 12 Feb – 24 Mar 2018, Drama Theatre, Sydney Opera House www.sydneytheatre.com.au/topgirls Seeing the show? Angela Lin (Coram Boy, Chinglish, Top Girls) and Rory have known each other since freshman year of college when they were naive 18 year olds with a dream. Angela talks about her experience as an Asian actress and how she has been able to stay positive through the challenges that the business presents her through faith and community. Rory and Angela have been having these conversations about surviving the entertainment world for nearly 15 years now.  Clearly they get through it with a lot of laughs.

The Guildhall School’s spring drama season continues with Caryl Churchill’s 1982 play Top Girls, opening on 8 February. Written during the rise of Thatcherism, this ground-breaking play explores life in an individualistic society where the few thrive at the expense of the many. Joseph Blatchley returns to the School to direct this production alongside designer Dora Schweitzer. In this podcast, stage manager Hollie Trist, lighting designer Dom Baker and cast members Abigail Richardson and Ellen Francis discuss the production.

Sue LePage is a set and costume designer based out of Toronto. She joined me at the Shaw Festival to talk about her early career and Top Girls, her design at the Shaw in 2015. This was a short interview, only 45 mins, so we could not talk much about many of the milestones in her career, but it is an interesting talk none-the-less!
