Lucas Oil Pro Motocross is again on hold, with the planned-for July 18 start to the season now pushed into August. A global pandemic might be the most complex problem ever to work around, but we all want to go racing, so this announcement certainly hasn't made fans happy. Jason Weigandt rang up Davey Coombs, who—full disclosure, is his boss at Racer X and also is part of the family that runs the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship—to learn more details as to why the nationals had to delay again. The takeaway? There are a few major reasons: teams have begun to express fears over travel from state to state at the moment; watching COVID rates rise has made predicting the future decisions of multiple state governments very difficult; and the races need fans to operate, because the economic model for Pro Motocross is much different than that of Monster Energy Supercross (it's more similar to many other smaller racing series that can't operate without fans). Also, the series does not want to start until it knows it can put together an entire series. Racing once and then stopping and waiting is not the plan that MX Sports want to use. Hopefully they can string together more races in a row by pushing back, and then an actual championship schedule can grow clear. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura.

Jason Weigandt chats with author Brett Smith about the most expensive photo in motocross history—the million-to-one Ricky Carmichael shot, taken from the stands, that led to an Oakley billboard in Los Angeles—a rare boost of mainstream exposure. Smith penned the story for the latest issue of Racer X Illustrated—"One Hit Wonder," which you can read right now at digital.racerxonline.com—and joins Weigandt for a chat about the process of tracking down a story no one understood in full. Even the photographer himself had no idea how his photo ended up becoming part of a famous Oakley ad campaign! Later, Weigandt also chats with Davey Coombs about the story he wrote in our new issue, "Waiting for Answers," which you can read right now at digital.racerxonline.com. Last week was the 37th Annual Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. The top amateur motocross racers from the United States all come to the Loretta Lynn’s Dude Ranch to compete to see who comes out on top.
In the early 1980s, a trio of motorcycle racing promoters from Ohio and West Virginia were looking for a facility. A country music legend needed to fill a campground. A sanctioning body wanted more members and a marquee event. And amateur motocross racers wanted a true and fair national championship. In this special edition of the Racer X Podcast, Brett Smith of @wewentfast takes us on a documentary-style journey into the genesis of the Amateur National Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn Ranch and what (amateur racing) life was like before 1982. Characters include Ron and Dick Lechien, Davey Coombs, Rita Coombs, Todd DeHoop, Tim Cotter, Rick “Super Hunky” Sieman, and more.

Jason Weigandt is joined by Davey Coombs and Roy Janson for a history lesson on how both the FIM and AMA ended up co-sanctioning the supercross championship. In 2001, the AMA announced it would split with the existing supercross promoters, thus setting off a business battle that ended up in the courtroom—and also led the existing promoters to a masterstroke move of turning supercross into an FIM World Championship. Janson was a vice-president at Clear Channel Entertainment, the supercross promoters at the time, and Coombs was an AMA board member as well as the pit reporter for the SX TV broadcasts (and of course the founder and editor-in-chief of Racer X Illustrated). They provide key insider stories and analysis of the moves that led supercross to the AMA and FIM sanction that it still uses today. They also shed light on WADA drug testing in supercross and USADA drug testing in pro motocross, in light of the recent suspension of Broc Tickle. The Racer X Exhaust Podcast is sponsored by Yoshimura.
Christian Craig comes on to talk about his move to the 450 experience on the Factory Honda this Supercross series as well as talking about looking ahead to his 450 MX campaign. DC talks Alta life, Alex Ray came up Just Short this weekend at Xanto Arena in Minnesota but he's a Friend of the Show who always SENDS and answers the phone. We'll also get the latest on the Ricky Carmichael Amateur Supercross (RCSX) which returns to the Daytona International Speedway this March for the biggest two-day amateur supercross event in the world. Racer X's Davey Coombs is already in Anaheim and will give his final thoughts before we drop the gate on the 2018 Monster Energy Supercross season this Saturday night! David Pingree has been heroically fighting the historic California fires beside his brave fellow firefighters for many weeks in between his other moto duties. We're glad things have finally been contained out west and we look forward to catching up with Ping tonight.
