As we get close to Patriots Day, let us remember that the fighting along "Battle Road" and the entire siege of Boston involved thousands of men from hundreds of communities.  On April 19, 1775 as the "Lexington Alarm" spread throughout the region, towns mustered their militia and they marched towards the fight.  Needham sent 185 men to fight the Redcoats that day, losing five men in the process.  Join Gloria Greis of the Needham History Center & Museum in conversation with Professor Robert Allison on the history of Needham's role in the revolution and their plans to commemorate these "Moments that Changed the World." Tell us what you think! One of my favorite books of 2025 has been The Burning of Rosemont Abbey by Naomi Stephens. Imagine my surprise when I learned she also has done historical romance with Biblical retellings--and I'd read one!  Her latest is The Scarlet Ribbon. Listen in to see how she managed such different genres! note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you.  This Rahab retelling set against the backdrop of the War for Independence promises to tear at the heartstrings of readers as they see the familiar story play out in a fresh new way and with new characters.   The Scarlet Ribbon by Naomi Stephens As the Revolutionary War unfurls around her, Rebekah Stanton is abandoned by the man who once claimed to love her. Shunned by her father and forced to give up her child, she finds herself thrust into prostitution at the local boarding house. When the British seize control of the nearby fort, she gives little thought to the officers who frequent the boarding house. Men are men regardless of the color of their uniform…or so she believes. But then a young man—a Patriot spy named Benjamin Renshaw—stumbles upon her in the darkness, and she saves him from a group of pursuing Redcoats. With an attack on the fort brewing in the background and the father of her child returned to serve with the British, Rebekah is torn between old dreams and new hope, struggling all the while to find peace and forgiveness in a place of rising conflict. 'Galup' is a Whadjuk Noongar word meaning 'Place of Fires' and refers to what is called  'Lake Monger' a remnant of the series of wetlands once known as the 'Perth Great Lakes'. In 1830 it was the site of a colonial era massacre when Redcoats of the British 63rd 'West Suffolk' Regiment and armed settlers pursued a party of Noongar from Mount Eliza to the shores of the lake. Subequently called 'Mongers Lake' after migrant John Henry Monger, who was given a land grant between the present day suburbs of Wembley and Subiaco, the Lake area underwent continual reclamation works and from the 1920s was dedicated for the purpose of 'public recreation, health and enjoyment'.

By the mid 1700's the British in North America had established 13 colonies and a large population some of which were 2nd or 3rd generation British Americans, having never set foot on the home islands. Being separated from Great Britain by 3,000 miles, taking 6-8 weeks to cross the Atlantic, the colonies began to feel isolated or maybe a little independent (see what I did there) from the King and Parliament. What didn't help make the colonists feel seen was the total lack of any representation in Parliament, meaning the colonies had no say in how they were being governed and how they were being taxed. British appointed Governors oversaw each colony independently, and ensured the will of His Majesty was enforced. Well fast forward to another war with France, this one inadvertently started in North America by a very familiar future American Founding Father. The 7 years war left Britain victorious but financially devastated, Parliament's solution was to tax the colonist, figuring they should start paying their way for Britain's war expenses. Now as you can imagine the Colonists were pissed, understandably so being they didn't have any voice in the matter but at the same time, I mean come on, we kinda started this particular war with France. This Taxation without Representation was just one of many greivances brewing in the colonies, there were a couple situations in Boston, one involving some redcoats firing into a hostile crowd and another involving making a nice spot of tea using the harbor as the kettle. These events and many more culminated in a standoff between British soldiers and Colonial Militia at a little town called Lexington where a "shot heard round the world" changed the course of world history forever. Join us for Part 1 of the American Revolutionary War.

Episode 180 it is then so let's get cracking. Or crackling, which was the atmosphere in late 1850 as Xhosaland and British Kaffraria was seized by the exploits of prophet Mlanjeni. He'd combined world views, his messianic emergence shook the land as far away as Cape Town. AS a sickly young man from near King Williams Town, he'd disappeared to work in the Cape Colony and returned in 1850 claiming to have been living under the sea. Not quite Sponge Bob because unlike that loveable kids character, Mlanjeni said it was during his stint underwater that God spoke to him. You'll remember how I explained that Mlanjeni took to sitting in pools in nearby rivers and streams, the water lapping against his face as he sat deep in thought. At first he seemed to be in sync with the missionaries and the Governor Harry Smith, saying the amaXhosa should abandon witchcraft, avoid raiding settler cattle and so on. However his message morphed as I explained, and very soon he was exorting his numerous adherents to stop burning the wood of gum trees — an invasive species — he believed the exotic tree symbolised white influence. Word spread, and some began saying that Mlanjeni had miraculous powers, he could light his pipe from the sun, he wore his face on one cheek so he could spot witches and paralyse them. When the missionaries heard that he was also saying that he could heal the sick, give sight to the blind, to make the mute speak and the lame walk. He refused to accept gifts, and the chiefs and commoners streamed to his home. Then the British tried to arrest him and he disappeared, thus growing more power in the eyes of his adherents. We need to focus on these religious matters, so a quick return to the men in black. The missionaries were in a spot. Robert Niven of the United Presbyterian Church was holding forth in Keiskamma hoekDown the road was a man who you could say was taking his position as missionary into the missionary position. George Brown lived on the plains below the Amatolas, not far from the Thyumi valley, arriving in early 1849. At first people noted how he had a kind and manly appearance. But very soon, however, the manly appearance took on a reverential lust — a scandalous man as you'll hear. But first, he seduced the young Janet Chalmers, William Chalmers daughter, and John Forbes Cumming hated him so much for this act, that the two men spoke only through letters. Brown was forced to marry Janet Chalmers in August 1850, five months pregnant.Harry Smith by now was on the frontier, and Sandile's mother Sutu who was Ngqika's widow, went to the Thyumi mission station on 9th December to speak with him. She asked why the English wanted another war. Smith said that the chiefs were not paying fines and she warned “You have taken away all my power, you take away the power of the chiefs, and then you find fault with us for not keeping the people in order…” Christmas Eve was the date selecte by Harry Smith as the day his intimidatory force as Noel Mostert Called it, up the Boma Pass into the Amatola mountains. It was exactly sixteen years to the day of the outbreak of the Frontier War of 1834.

On this Independence Day, discover how the pastors of the American colonies, derisively called the Black-Robed Regiment by the British, boldly taught their congregations the Biblical principles to resist tyranny. Guest host Adam McManus interviews Dan Fisher, author of Bringing Back the Black Robed Regiment: How the 18th century church stood for liberty and why it must do so again. Dan is the co-pastor of Fairview Baptist in Edmond, Oklahoma, a former member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives from 2012-2015, and ran for Governor in 2018. His vision is that the American church will regain the “spirit” of the original “Black-Robed Regiment,” and once again actively engage in defense of truth and liberty. In an impressive 60-minute, multi-media presentation in full period costume, Dan travels the country to portray these heroic men of American history complete with verified artifacts from our War of Independence. (Check out his schedule). Adam and Pastor Fisher discuss: *  Pastor Peter Muhlenberg of Woodstock, Virginia who took off his black robe in the pulpit, revealing a colonel's uniform, and challenged the men to fight. *  Pastor Jonas Clarke of Lexington, Massachusetts who trained his men to prepare for the April 19, 1775 showdown with the British which led to the shot heard ‘round the world on Lexington Green. *  Pastor James Caldwell of Elizabethtown, New Jersey who brought hymnals to the Minutemen to use for wadding to fight the British. *  Pastor Naphtali Daggett, president of Yale, who rallied 100 students to fight the Redcoats, which led to his capture and brutal treatment. *  Pastor John Treadwell of Lynn, Massachusetts, who kept a loaded Flintlock in his pulpit, and who narrowly escaped death at the Battle of Bennington in Vermont. *  The disturbing similarity between the church in pre-World War II Germany and the American church today.  Both have, by and large, remained silent in the face of evil. This program includes: 1. The World View in 5 Minutes with Adam McManus (Tractor Supply Co. saw the light, The colonial pastors who took a stand against tyranny, Iran sentenced 5 Christians to total of 25 years in prison) 2. Generations with Kevin Swanson (Guest Hosted by Adam McManus)

Something Completely Different, With Brian Wilson

Buckle up, Liberty Lovers! We're about to take a passionate safari into the cultural killing fields where that most sacred of American idols, the Second Amendment, still stands battle-scarred but defiantly undefeated against the unending onslaught of soul-sculpted statists. No minced words here - that most hallowed provision granting the unassailable right for citizens to stay strapped has been on the Adderall-addled academics' surgical table for an autopsy more times than Jeffery Dahmer's icebox. From the pathologically Centrist "common sense" cowards all the way over to the authoritarian left's rainbow-haired Bolshevik-lings...they've all taken their whacks at trying to gaslight the proverbial buffalo into placid submission. But not on our watch, Rambos! We don't just pay lip service to ‘cold dead hands' and Molon Labe decals - that unnegotiable self-reliance mantra pumps through our veins hotter than a recently cycled AP5 barrel. The individually conscious among us intuitively grasp this primordial truth - any notion of hard-won freedom starts first...and foremost...with the inherent right of armed self-preservation against all potential depredations. Our Crayola-brained colleagues might whine about hypothetical "well-regulated militia" stipulations until their gender studies diplomas turn blue. However, that semantic squabble disregards the core tenet which deposited 1776's revolutionary well-digger's ass directly onto Concord's hallowed acreage in the first place. Where institutional authorities overextended their capricious tentacles, the quintessential American spirit would inevitably arise to reciprocally administer a mandatory re-education program...usually by way of mandated lead poisoning therapy. The Founding Dads weren't just rebelling against King George's taxing tantrums - they were throwing world-historical shade at the entire cancerous concept of despotic rulers lording over souls never meant to be governed. “All men created” equal, yadda yadda yadda...so the story goes. True Liberty isn't some ripe fruit dangling from a democratic tree; it flows through our very DNA as the blind force animating all life in this crazy cosmos. So these radicals free-birthed a nation premised on constantly testing the limits of that foundational truth. And their experiment was simplicity itself: take a fractious cluster of territorial pissants, hand them the modern world's most disruptive technologies, and remind them in no uncertain brimstonian terms that any roving tax-farmer who came collecting too much coinage risked the very literal lead shower curtain. Constitutional crisis, meet hot lead Affirmatrix.Fast-forward a couple of hard-fought centuries, and that timeless liberty quintessence still courses through our nation's bedrock every bit as robustly as it did when the first pearled crowd-courter caught a hand-crafted musket ball from a wised-up Son of Liberty's Brown Bess. We don't simply retain this immutable self-defense doctrine as some archaic abstract any more than we reflexively phone a Harvard president for ethical perspective. This philosophical life raft remains as compulsory to our civilized equilibrium as low earth orbit's inescapable gravitational influence. Because firmly planted in their heart of hearts, they knew the impenetrable truth - our most fundamental liberties have always coexisted with the most primal human capability to lock, load, and say "No &@$*in' more, Jack" to any would-be oligarch lacking a proper sense of humility. Tom Paine may have penned the verbal ammo, but Sam Colt's actual sermons landed with far more immediate velocity. At the end of every freshly blazed theoretical trail...as sure as those winter sunsets glinting ruby-red off the frosted Berkshire pines...stands cold, undeniable pragmatism. A need as immutable as the poor poet's hunger. The incorrigible prepper's obsession. Curbside sanity's final salvo against the onslaught of encroaching philosophical chaos. You can call it Maslow's hierarchy, the will to survive, mankind's primal instinct - whatever semantic flourish conveniently facilitates your psychological dissonance.Just ask the Redcoats who kept rudely questioning these colonists' asserted right to purchase high-capacity muskets on a Tuesday. They ended horizontal at a little local opera called "The Eight Worldly Winds" - or as we refer to it here in the Cradle of Persevered Liberty: Concord's Lively Bridge Party. The Lobsterbacks learned the hard-crenelated way that day - revering the Second Amendment isn't about deer jerky and duck blinds. It's a periscope peer review of one's concept of selfhood and expresses renunciation of the sutured self-mutilation required to perceive one's relation to power through the diseased liberal lenses. At the end of the Socratic circumnavigation, all trails merge into the final applicable maxim...the common sense citizens' endowment that hardens our latent survival instincts into a philosophical palisade safeguarding every other individual indulgence. You want to keep respiring and propagating, don't you? Then arm those neural pathways accordingly! It's the last existential perimeter around our self-determination...and we don't need no stinkin' dissertation to keep reaffirming its propriety. We were born into a heritage honoring only the most robustly centered individualities articulated by our Founding Dads who had the pamphleteered cojones to go full-immersive into History's smeltery furnace, quivering with individually actualized potential. So reload that philosophical lodestar, my erudite logistical Rambos! Re-temper those mind's eye crosshairs. Socratic trailblazers like us never lose the highroads while plumb lines stay taut. Because it isn't about embossing political philosophies or manifesting ideological statecraft...it's about the retained self-sovereignty to entertain such privileges in their proper dioramas. Let those tenured charlatans and butt munchers keep proselytizing their reductive social theories into an endless rhetorical abyss. Make sure your cognitive powder's always dry enough to uphold rectitudinous primacies! For the audibly impatient, the short version is: stay locked, stay loaded, and maintain situational awareness. The Second Amendment has your back. Remember, Freedom cannot exist without the healthy exercise of individual responsibility. Failure to do so will always result in the Government making decisions for you. Thanks. Please hold your applause.Oh. You were holding your applause. Thanks for listening. Or reading. Or just not dozing off. If you'd like a copy of the speech, suitable for framing, training puppies, or gift-wrapping fish, feel free to Print away! Or forward it to your favorite anti-gun fanatic! It cost 35 shillings per week to attend.  South Africa-born Billy Butlin had created the camp after holidaying in Barry Island and feeling “sorry for the families with young children as they trudged along wet and bedgraggled, and forlornly filled time in amusement arcades until they could return back to the boarding houses.” In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly review the entertainments on offer, from rambunctious Redcoats to boxing kangaroos; explain how The Beatles owe a debt to Butlin's Skegness; and reveal the sad fate of the park's famous monorail…  Further Reading: • ‘'Our True Intent Is All For Your Delight' - Glorious Pictures of the Skegness Butlin's' (Flashbak, 2019): https://flashbak.com/our-true-intent-is-all-for-your-delight-butlins-at-skegness-17646 • ‘The mystery of how an old Butlin's monorail train ended up in this Lincolnshire field' (Lincolnshire Live, 2021): https://www.lincolnshirelive.co.uk/news/local-news/mystery-how-old-butlins-monorail-5059270 • ‘Best of Butlin's' (British Pathé): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGZoqkZUFtA ‘Why am I hearing a rerun?' The British Army of the American revolution. Like most British armies throughout history, they were over-stretched, under resourced and fighting thousands of miles from home against a tough and determined enemy. But what do we really know about these men in the red coats? Were they the proverbial scum of the earth? Was the army their only option to avoid the gutter? Where were they from and how long did had they served? And what about the officers? Were they “foppish dandies, or oafish brutes”? Or were they well-motivated and experienced soldiers doing the best for their men? Well today I am joined by author and historian Robbie MacNiven to discover the answers to all of these questions and more. Robbie has written a book about the 33rd Foot on campaign during the revolution - it's called the Pattern and I've posted a link below. https://amzn.to/4cH2WLo  If you want to support me then please sign up for my mailing list here - https://redcoathistory.com/newsletter/

In late December 1776, the American War of Independence appeared tobe on its last legs. General George Washington's continental forces hadbeen reduced to a shadow of their former strength, the British Armyhad chased them across the Delaware River into Pennsylvania, andenlistments for many of the rank and file would be up by month's end.Desperate times call for desperate measures, however, and GeorgeWashington responded to this crisis with astonishing audacity. OnChristmas night 1776, he recrossed the Delaware as a nor'easterchurned up the coast, burying his small detachment under howlingsheets of snow and ice. Undaunted, they attacked a Hessian brigade atTrenton, New Jersey, taking the German auxiliaries by completesurprise. Then, only three days later, Washington struck again, crossingthe Delaware, slipping away from the British at Trenton, and attackingthe Redcoats at Princeton—to their utter astonishment. The British, now back on their heels, retreated toward New Brunswickas Washington's reinvigorated force followed them north into Jersey.Over the next eight months, Washington's continentals and the statemilitias of New Jersey would go head-to-head with the British in amultitude of small-scale actions and large-scale battles, eventuallyforcing the British to flee New Jersey by sea. In this narrative of the American War of Independence, today's guest Jim Stempel, author of “The Enemy Harassed: Washington's New Jersey Campaign of 1777” brings to life one of the most violent, courageous, yet virtually forgotten periods of the Revolutionary War.
