The Spanish Civil War is usually packaged as a clash between fascist generals and a democratic republic, with Hemingway and Orwell standing in for the whole moral picture. Today I walk through historian Warren Carroll's counterclaim from The Last Crusade: that the core conflict is faith against revolution, and that once you follow the evidence, the familiar narrative starts to invert.We trace the five-year runway to 1936: church burnings, anti-Catholic laws, and the Popular Front's own revolutionary promises, followed by a country slipping into open political violence. Then we hit the moment that makes “normal politics” feel impossible: the murder of opposition leader José Calvo Sotelo by state security forces. From there the focus shifts to Navarre's Carlists and the religious framing that turns a rising into what Carroll calls a crusade, complete with confession, Communion, hymns, and the Sacred Heart.The hardest section is the one Carroll says the modern world prefers to minimize: the systematic persecution of the Catholic Church in Republican zones, the disappearance of public Mass, and the martyr stories, including Barbastro. In this week's Northwest Florida Fishing Report, host Joe Baya covers improving offshore water after a tropical system, post-storm bottom fishing around Panama City, late-summer inshore action in Choctawhatchee Bay, and dirty surf conditions from Pensacola to Navarre. This episode features Tom Hilton of Hilton's Realtime Navigator, Capt. Myles Colley aboard It Just Takes Time, Capt. Harris Scruggs with Triple B Fishing Charters, Capt. Blake Nelson with Reel30A, and Justin Reed Fishing. Tom Hilton starts with the offshore conditions report, where the tropical system helped break up the freshwater and dirty river water that had spread across much of the northern Gulf. He explains how to combine chlorophyll imagery, sea-surface temperatures, altimetry, current, structure, and bait to locate productive water. Tom also covers how to use one-day, three-day, and seven-day satellite images, why organized color changes can hold bait and predators, and how offshore structures can continue producing even when they sit inside less-favorable altimetry. Capt. Myles Colley breaks down the current offshore billfish pattern after a tournament performance that included five blue marlin, six sailfish, and a white marlin. He explains why current speed and direction are his most important offshore factors, why he prefers counterclockwise or incoming current, and when he will leave an unproductive area for a completely different body of water. Miles also discusses trolling teasers, pitching ballyhoo and larger natural baits, using live bait and sonar for blue marlin, and applying enough drag to keep big fish from settling into a long fight. He closes with the story of an estimated grander blue marlin hooked near the Nipple and Elbow that measured approximately 154 inches and was released after an eight-hour fight. Capt. Harris Scruggs covers the Panama City offshore report, where the storm created dirty, silty water and a major increase in sail cats and hardhead catfish. Red grouper remain available on deeper natural bottom, while triggerfish numbers have been inconsistent ahead of the season reopening. Harris explains why he deploys a flat line and knocker rig at every stop, how casting a one- to three-ounce knocker rig up-current allows it to cover the water column, and why dead bait has recently outperformed live bait for snapper and grouper. He also discusses scaling down to 30- or 40-pound fluorocarbon on pressured fish and using multi-hook rigs to fire up natural bottom before sending down larger baits. Capt. Blake Nelson reports that Choctawhatchee Bay fishing has remained productive, but rapidly developing thunderstorms have made weather awareness the biggest concern. Large schools of jack crevalle and bull redfish are feeding on pogies and greenies around Rocky Bayou, Boggy Bayou, Joe's Bayou, Marler Bayou, and the East Pass. Blake explains how to target them with 20- to 30-pound braid, heavier leaders, topwater plugs, and large swimbaits. Trout, slot redfish, and mangrove snapper are holding around grass, sandy pockets, docks, and deeper cuts, while summer dock-light fishing has been especially productive with live bait and quarter-ounce glow DOA shrimp. Justin Reed wraps up with the surf report, where anglers must locate cleaner water to escape heavy catfish activity and find pompano, ladyfish, whiting, and other desirable species. He recommends scouting multiple beach accesses, walking shallow points when necessary, and casting beyond the dirty water. Cut ladyfish on a fish-finder rig has been producing redfish and bluefish close to the beach, while pompano have been keyed in on sand fleas and orange floats, beads, hooks, or Fishbites. Justin also explains why pyramid sinkers hold better than egg sinkers in strong west-wind current and why frequent bait checks remain important during the summer. Deux ans plus tard, exilé à Florence, l'écrivain se voit confier la rédaction des portraits de peintres pour la Galerie des Offices. Il se met donc à écrire, entre autre, sur le flamand et s'intéresse aux tableaux que celui-ci a réalisé d'après les commandes de Marie de Médicis, reine de France et de Navarre, épouse d'Henri IV. Chemin faisant, il s'intéresse à Louis XIII, fils d'Henri IV et de Marie de Médicis et mais aussi au Duc de Buckingham, un proche de Rubens… Et l'on peut lire, ainsi, en genèse, quelques éléments fondamentaux qui donneront, quelques années plus tard, l'un des monuments de la littérature mondiale : « Les trois mousquetaires ». We have seen him write to friends with both admonishment and encouragement, and we have seen him write to royalty to clarify matters of faith. But this time, Calvin writes to a recently converted queen of a bygone kingdom, offering guidance and counsel during a time of both personal and political upheaval. The Kingdom of Navarre existed from 834 to 1841, its former territory now divided between France and Spain. During Calvin's lifetime, it was a small but vibrant kingdom, and its queen had come to faith in Christ. She possessed every human comfort: wealth beyond measure, endless distractions, and every luxury a princess could desire. Yet in the midst of worldly abundance, God revealed himself to her and rescued her. In a 1561 letter from Geneva, John Calvin reflects on the mercy of God that awakened her soul and called her to himself. He warns of how easily the gospel can be choked out by the love of the world and the busyness of life—a truth as relevant for a 16th-century queen as it is for us today. We all need rescue from our sins, focus amidst distractions, and the saving grace of Christ. The counsel Calvin offers this young monarch reminds us that God's mercy calls each of us to treasure his truth, to walk faithfully, and to live fully for him. This episode offers a window into Calvin's pastoral heart and the Protestant Reformation, showing how even royalty can be brought low and lifted up by God's grace. It is a story of spiritual awakening, divine mercy, and a reminder that no throne, no wealth, and no worldly pleasure can replace the joy found in walking with Christ. Et depuis plus de quatre siècles, un nom revient sans cesse : Catherine de Médicis. Pourquoi l'a-t-on accusée d'être la grande instigatrice du massacre ? La réponse tient autant à la politique qu'aux préjugés qui entouraient cette reine italienne devenue régente.D'abord, le contexte. Depuis dix ans, la France est déchirée par les guerres de Religion entre catholiques et protestants (huguenots). Catherine tente de gouverner au-dessus des factions, cherchant des compromis : elle organise le mariage de sa fille Marguerite avec le chef protestant Henri de Navarre, espérant réconcilier les deux camps. Mais ce geste, audacieux, attise les colères. Les catholiques radicaux la voient comme trop conciliante ; les protestants se méfient de son entourage catholique, notamment du duc de Guise.Tout bascule le 22 août 1572, quand l'amiral de Coligny, chef respecté du parti huguenot et conseiller influent du jeune roi Charles IX, est blessé par un tir d'arquebuse. Les protestants accusent les Guise ; d'autres murmurent que Catherine, inquiète de l'influence croissante de Coligny sur son fils, aurait commandité l'attentat. Aucun élément ne le prouve, mais la rumeur se répand.C'est ici que naît l'accusation centrale : Catherine aurait, prise de peur, convaincu Charles IX de frapper les chefs protestants avant qu'ils ne se vengent de l'attentat. Selon ce récit, elle aurait manipulé un roi faible et impulsif, paniqué à l'idée d'un complot huguenot. Le Conseil royal prend alors une décision terrible : éliminer quelques chefs protestants pour éviter une guerre immédiate. Mais la situation échappe totalement au contrôle. L'assassinat ciblé se transforme en massacre généralisé, encouragé par la ferveur catholique de Paris et l'explosion de violences spontanées.Après coup, il est commode de faire de Catherine la grande coupable. Elle est italienne, étrangère, femme de pouvoir dans un univers masculin : idéale pour concentrer les fantasmes politiques. Les chroniqueurs protestants renforcent cette image d'une « reine empoisonneuse », héritée des clichés anti-médicis. Pourtant, les historiens s'accordent : Catherine a validé une décision catastrophique mais n'a pas voulu ni anticipé un bain de sang national. Elle cherchait à éviter une guerre civile, et a, au contraire, déclenché l'un des pires massacres du siècle.En somme, Catherine fut accusée autant pour son rôle politique central que pour l'image diabolique qu'on bâtit autour d'elle. In 1534, he went to Paris, where he taught philosophy after obtaining his master's degree, met St. Ignatius of Loyola, and was enrolled as one of the first seven Jesuits.With Ignatius, he received Holy Orders in Venice in 1537. In 1540, he was sent to evangelize India.
