Takeaways from this episode… You can't go forward looking backwards. You can't go in a certain direction just by looking at where NOT to go. Most people want their leaders to be better versions of what they want to be. Transculturalism the realization of the hope of the gospel. God always has a people covenanted to Him and to one another. The gospel is supposed to be a message that transverses cultural differences and idiosyncrasies. We are able to form something much more beautiful together than we are apart. The sum of the whole is more beautiful than the individual parts. You need to have a clear vision, strategy, and set of values of where you are going in any leadership position. Knowing who you are is a discipline. Lean into the way that you are made. It's not always that we don't have time, it's that we don't always manage our time appropriately. Takeaways from this episode... “Leadership shapes human lives, and for that it is sacred work.” -Jenni Catron The heart for all of us in ministry is to say “I want to understand what it means to lead well.” Leadership begins with influence. Influence: the power to change or affect someone. Leadership isn't just power: it is an opportunity to have influence in people's lives. Leadership is about the people you are serving. A leader needs to be open to hear from other leaders, and then discern what that looks like for them. “Your staff is your most critical resource.” -Jenni Catron Your staff is going to reach far more people than you are going to individually. When you invest in your staff, you develop your entire church. -Be intentional about your staff time. Your team needs to be able to hear from you on a regular basis. -Spiritually invest in them. -Have a system of personal development for your staff. “Be simple, and be consistent.” -Jenni Catron Engagement is more important than creating crowds. Every person that is on your team is contributing to your organization's culture. Investing in someone is a lifelong endeavor. If a leader is not healthy, their team will not be healthy. “Be attentive to your health as a leader.” -Jenni Catron Find leaders who have a regular influence in your life to mentor you. NLC provided this for Ben. He admits that he did not agree on everything, but what he did agree on was NLC's commitment to making Jesus a priority and making Him known to everyone. Be bold about what we believe. Ben stated that he doesn't want church leaders to be fake; they should be upfront and lay everything out on the table so that no one is left guessing what their church believes. Ben also expressed that hearing where a church stands on [homosexuality]—in love—is more helpful and honorable to him than pretending that they don't have a stance at all. Surrender our agendas. Create a space for people, no matter what their background or issues. Ben believes that, for the most part, the church is pretty good at this in every other area but with gay people. We should take what we learned about dealing with people who face addictions and other struggles and apply it to this issue. Engage in these kinds of conversations. We need to be able to sit down and talk honestly as brothers and sisters in Christ, for the sake of those who don't know Christ yet. There will be situations when we encounter this issue on many different levels. Will our mission be to exalt the name of Jesus and allow the Holy Spirit to do a work in each of us, or otherwise? Asking questions engages people to truly think about their honest answers. Hard questions force you to account for the depth of your life. Be the leader who doesn't just ask surface level questions, but who reveals their motives by the first question they ask. “The questions you ask will reveal the motives of your heart.” – Josh Gagnon The best piece of advice Gordon ever received for his marriage was, “God means to say many things to you through [your wife]; listen to her.” For any men in ministry, it is important to remember that your wife will have many things to say to you that you need to hear. Treat your wife with dignity and respect and help her recognize her spiritual gifts, then draw upon them. “Your job is to help your wife to become everything God wants her to be.” – Gordon MacDonald As a father, always commit to making your children a priority over ministry. You must be able to grow in your weaknesses, not just blame it on your personality. Wise leaders surround themselves with people who are not just like them, but balance their strengths and weaknesses. The greatest danger in leadership is surrounding yourself only with people who are just like you. Don't lead those around you to become just like you, but encourage them to grow in their weaknesses and allow their strengths to lead up to you in your areas of weakness. The greatest teams always beat the greatest individuals. One is too small of a number for greatness. Pastor Josh remembers God teaching him: “Stop praying for her to become the woman you want her to be, and start praying for her to become the woman God wants them to be.” If I can develop people to become the greatest “them” they can be, God will do amazing things through them. Developing people into the person God wants them to be is superior to developing them into who you want them to be every time. Jesus was both an in-your-face leader and an at-your-feet leader. Just because you've been given great authority and position, doesn't make you a great leader or someone who is using that responsibility well. Great respect is always born out of great sacrifice. Just because people obeying you doesn't mean they respect you. You earn more respect through humility than through authority. You can do things because you “should” or because it is genuinely who you are becoming as a person.
