Join our limited newsletter, The Science of Habits, to get curated, science-backed tips to help make your New Year's resolution stick in 2024. https://ggsc.berkeley.edu/podcasts/habits We explore how contemplating our heritage can make us feel more belonging, gratitude, and confidence in what we're capable of achieving. Link to episode transcript: https://tinyurl.com/5djerhbj Episode summary: Oral historian Mi'Jan Celie Tho-Biaz knows the profound impact the past can have on the present. For our show, Mi'Jan tried a lab-tested writing practice that took the historical facts she knew about her own family further – by way of her imagination. She journaled about her great-great grandmother Emma, the last enslaved person in her family, and her late father, Njoroge , imagining what they might say to her today. We also hear from psychologist Susan Moore about how learning about your ancestors can help you feel a sense of self-knowledge, gratitude and belonging. Practice: Imagine an ancestor in your family lineage. It can be someone you have known or someone from centuries ago. Spend the next 5-15 minutes writing about them. If you don't know the details, imagine how their life would have been. Write down anything that comes to mind such as their way of life, their profession or what they looked like. Next imagine what they would tell you if they were alive today. What specific insights, advice or feedback would they give you? Write down your reflections. Legal technology provides a multitude of benefits to lawyers. In this podcast, George Njoroge, a legal tech expert, and Africa Legal's Tom Pearson explore the evolutions in legal tech and analyse the benefits. Poor record management is often associated with inefficiency and corruption. To change that, George Njoroge, software expert and engineer, has come up with a technology tool that helps busy lawyers and in-house legal officers save time and operational costs, increase efficiencies and make better decisions. Njoroge, is the founder and CEO of Enfinite Solutions, the first company in Kenya to offer a digital legal service platform for organisations. With technology being the driver of efficiency in most aspects, Njoroge says law firms are slowly but steadily adapting to the tech evolution. He says most people don't know exactly what kind of data they hold – and its value – due to poor record keeping. “I keep giving this reference to some of our clients, that you could have a department with 200 files or so, bringing in more business than another department with over 1 000 files. Do you just focus on the good business that you're getting from this one department? Do you hire more people in the department that's increasing your revenue? Most people are not able to tell because they don't have any infrastructure to analyse the data. If you can't analyse – if you can't measure – you can't improve.” Njoroge says there are three metrics that every law firm in Africa should be measuring: understanding how many clients they have and who they are, billing, and the debt to equity ratio. He adds that legal tech has the greatest efficiency potential when it is used to replace repetitive manual tasks such as tracking hourly rates, billing and debt. But what does it take for a law firm that has always done things manually to transition to using technology? Njoroge says his company starts by mapping out the firm's data, understanding their clients and giving them a scenario where everything is available on one platform. This covers business management, accounting and finance, and the human resources aspect. Another trending topic Njoroge speaks on is that of data protection and security. He discusses why it is important for every lawyer to be aware of the regulations – and why firms need to have robust policies in place to ensure compliance. The conversation wraps up with Njoroge explaining how easy it is for lawyers to make use of Enfinite's products and services. “Once we do a customisation for the client, they are able to be up and running within two weeks,” he says.
In the latest episode of Voices of Africa, Marcus speaks to Ken Njoroge, Founder and CEO of PANI, a venture capital and private equity firm that supports tech entrepreneurs to navigate the startup ecosystem in Africa. They discuss what it takes to get ahead in the African startup space, and the myriad opportunities that exist for tech entrepreneurs in the African digital ecosystem.

Liezl explores the fascinating story of Nic Jacobs and Ben Njoroge Nduba, two astounding people who met quite by chance, and who decided to pool their energies into making the world a better place - providing water and sustenance to the village of Kimbimbi in Kenya. Nic and Ben join Liezl to talk about what drove them to complete their mission, how they came together, and the shared values that drive them onwards. KEY TAKEAWAYS The project first began as an idea rooted in transportation, but transformed into a more permanent solution. The most beneficial solutions to humanity come from identifying a need that helps people, and applying the skills we have to the problem at hand. We often only see the end result of a life-changing project, but the work that goes on beneath the ground and behind the scenes is monumental. BEST MOMENTS 'I came up with an idea unique!' An interview with Phyllis Njoroge. Phyllis is a product manager, cognitive scientist and now author of "From Fraud to Freedom". Phyllis wants us all to know that imposter syndrome is something that can be tackled, and wrote a book to help us examine how to tackle an issue that affects many product managers due to the ambiguity of our roles. We speak about a lot, including: Her book, from Fraud to Freedom, and how it digs into what Imposter Syndrome actually is and whether everyone has it Her journey into product management, and whether going into an industry she had no experience in made her imposter syndrome worse The problems of getting into self-reinforcing negative feedback loops and the ways you might intervene to stop you sabotaging yourself How imposter syndrome isn't just in your head but can be imposed on marginalised groups by a society that gives every impression that you don't belong there How imposter syndrome isn't something that goes away with seniority or perceived success, and how these might even make it worse Whether her background in cognitive sciences informed the book, and how she used that background to examine the cognitive biases that reinforce imposter syndrome Whether product managers are more prone to imposter syndrome due to the vague, ambiguous nature of many product management roles And much more! Buy From Fraud to Freedom "From Fraud to Freedom is a book about how we all play a part in contributing to or calming impostor syndrome. It's a solution-oriented book that discusses methods for individuals, mentors, managers, and friends to manage their own impostor syndrome and helps others in the process too. Even though an estimated 70% of people experience impostor syndrome, the guidance in this book is not one-size-fits-all but filled with a range of intrapersonal and interpersonal methods to achieve your best self." In Chocolate Surrealism: Music, Movement, Memory, and History in the Circum-Caribbean (University Press of Mississippi, 2016), Dr. Njoroge M. Njoroge highlights connections among the production, performance, and reception of popular music at critical historical junctures in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Njoroge illuminates musics of the circum-Caribbean as culturally and conceptually integrated within the larger history of the region. Njoroge examines the deep interrelations between music, movement, memory, and history in the African diaspora. He finds the music both a theoretical anchor and a mode of expression and representation of Black identities and political cultures. Music and performance offer ways for the author to re-theorize the intersections of race, nationalism and musical practice, and geopolitical connections. Further, music allows Njoroge a reassessment of the development of the modern world system in the context of local, popular responses to the global age. The book analyzes different styles, times, and politics to render a brief history of Black Atlantic sound. Further, music allows Njoroge a reassessment of the development of the modern world system in the context of local, popular responses to the global age. In Chocolate Surrealism: Music, Movement, Memory, and History in the Circum-Caribbean (University Press of Mississippi, 2016), Dr. What does it look like when you are just starting your business? It’s rare to hear women still early in the process of entrepreneurship share their wins and challenges. That’s why this week, I’m excited to speak with Susan Njoroge of Sip Trip, a drinks-delivery service here in Nairobi, Kenya. I talked to Susan just weeks into starting Sip Trip, which she launched right in the middle of the stay-at-home quarantine in Kenya. But as you’ll see in this interview, Sip Trip was also the result of an extremely agile pivot by Susan and her family. In this episode, we also talk about: Keeping things simple How leaning on family helped Susan launch Why she chose to launch without a business plan The art of the cold call How she sees competition Order your next alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks from Sip Trip: https://www.siptripke.com/ As mentioned in this episode: KTN morning show LIFE & STYLE https://www.instagram.com/ktnlife_style/ Friday Foreplay on Asylum radio: https://www.instagram.com/fridayforeplay/ Jiweke Tavern https://www.instagram.com/jiweketavern/ Bourbon Bridge Lounger https://www.instagram.com/bourbonbridge.ke/ Connect with Susan and Sip Trip Website: https://www.siptripke.com/ Call directly: +254728333985 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/siptripke/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Sip-Trip-Ke-100654608262910 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sura_common/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SuraCommon Connect with me (Paula) Twitter https://twitter.com/kalibawse Instagram https://www.instagram.com/kalibawse/ I Have No Idea What I’m Doing instagram https://www.instagram.com/africanwomeninbiz/ I Have No Idea What I’m Doing Facebook group (highly recommended) https://bit.ly/3dXScJ2

Travis talks with Product Manager, Phyllis Njoroge about a few areas of opportunity for LinkedIn's product team, content creation and distribution, podcasting, voice, and more. About Phyllis Throughout her life, she has been interested in "everything."** When she was a child, she asked if she could go to college forever because her favorite thing to do is learn and improve. In history class, she grew jealous of the Renaissance person because it was the last she heard of someone being allowed to be well-versed in, well, a lot of things. Introduce our lead in the third act: Product Management. she no longer has to choose what areas to be skilled in for a specialization because the specialization demanded that she be skilled in several areas. She can stay an artist, an engineer, a therapist, an entrepreneur, a leader, an innovator, and a visionary without having to switch hats. Like many others, Phyllis didn't choose to become a product manager; she was engaging in many product management skills and found a title that aligned with what she wanted out of her life and her work. Outside of solving for user problems, she spends her time trying to work on some other problems in the world: imposter syndrome, lack of diversity and equity in STEM, and a surprisingly common lack of career fulfillment. She rides on the fundamental belief that life should be fair, easy, and lived freely by everyone regardless of the circumstances they were born into. She aims to improve the world from where it was yesterday and would love to connect with anyone who looks to shake up tradition for innovation. This episode of Security Stories is a little different from usual, but for good reason! With the help of some very special guests, we take a comprehensive look back at the Not Petya cyber attack, the Sandworm hackers, and the context behind this act of cyber warfare. First to join us is Noureen Njoroge, a senior cybersecurity engineer and threat intelligence analyst at Cisco. Noureen is a passionate advocate for women and minorities in the IT industry, and is the founder of Cisco's global mentoring program, as well as the president of North Carolina Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) Affiliate chapter. We learn about Noureen's passion for mentoring, as well as her thoughts on the threat landscape. Then we're joined by Andy Greenberg, senior cybersecurity investigative journalist for Wired Magazine, and author of the book "Sandworm: A New Era of Cyberwar and the Hunt for the Kremlin's Most Dangerous Hackers". The book tells the true story of the desperate hunt to identify and track an elite team of Russian agents who are bent on digital sabotage. It starts out as a detective story but it soon turns into a disaster story as the truth starts to come to the fore.Andy also talks to Hazel about how he spent time in Russia and Ukraine, gathering sources, and learning about this new emergence and type of cyber criminal. And he has a fascinating take on how the hacker culture has evolved in recent years. Finally, we're joined by senior threat analysts from the Cisco Talos team, including Craig Williams, Matt Olny and Mitch Neff. We chat to them about what happened on the day of the attack (June 27th 2017), the process the investigative team used to find out what was really happening, and what impact the attack has left on the threat landscape and the world at large. This really is a fascinating episode with some incredible guests, who each share their insights, experience and advice for the benefit of the wider cybersecurity community.
“We need each other. Cybersecurity is a global event and we need all the brains,” says Noreen Njoroge. “Threat actors don’t care where you are from or what your social status is. They are there to attack everybody. As cybersecurity specialists, we should also have that mindset. It’s a community effort. I have to help my brother, my sister, my coworker, my friend, know how to better defend themselves against attacks.” Njoroge imbues that same philosophy into her cybersecurity mentoring projects. As a Security Threat Engineer at Cisco, President of North Carolina Women in Cybersecurity, and leader of the Mentors and Mentees Group for Women in Cybersecurity, she has a unique perspective on the humans who make up the cybersecurity industry. Today, she sits down with our Host and Principal Security Analyst, Jen Stone, to discuss:How making more “room at the table” for diverse thinking strengthens our defensive stance and improves cybersecurity around the globe. Many of our guests come to the conversation with years, if not decades, of experience in the social good sector. Today, we thought we’d shake things up and hear from changemakers of a different demographic. In this episode, ABSI Connect’s Elise Martinoski, a recent university graduate, sat down with three of her peers: Maya Pajevic, Sally Njoroge, and Xander Jensen, to discuss their experiences engaging with changemaking as students and recent graduates. Students and youth bring unique perspectives to the table when it comes to changemaking. Whether from theory they’ve learned in class or knowledge they gained through a fellowship or work term or volunteer experience, they are often equipped with bold ideas or big questions and are ready to hit the ground running and change the world post-grad. But what does it mean to ‘change the world’? How do we do that? Where do we even start? Are we qualified to do such a thing? These are some of the thoughts Elise often hears when she chats with other recent grads and emerging changemakers. So, she decided to sit down with three other Mount Royal University students and recent graduates to hear from them what it’s been like to learn about social innovation in the classroom, the experiences they’ve had translating this knowledge into the workforce, and their hopes for the world of changemaking. By Marco Ciappelli and Sean Martin We met Noureen Njoroge, Security Threat Intel Engineer at Cisco Systems, while attending the Women in Cybersecurity Gala in Las Vegas and quickly realized that she was someone we wanted to stay connected with. Here, in this new An InfoSec Life podcast, we present to you her personal story and mission. What did we talk about? How and why she entered the InfoSec industry Things she is doing, and programs she’s involved with, that are designed to mentor other women and people of color interested in entering and working in the industry How she’s helping to extend the reach of the industry to bring the opportunities to those that may not be aware of their options The difference between being a mentor and a mentee, including the value of both roles Ultimately, it doesn’t matter where you came from, how you got here, what you’re doing, where you’ve succeeded, how you’ve failed, or where you’re going. We all have a role to play to bring more people into the mix, doing so with diversity and inclusion in mind, and with a focus on helping to drive success throughout the community such that the community can drive safety throughout society. Noureen is certainly doing her part—and more. Sincere apologies from the Kaz entertainment team, I realized that my last podcast episode came out without condolences to the Riverside attack victims. Tragedy befell us at the beginning of the year and people lost their lives, lost loved ones, were in fear of their lives inside 14 riverside. It's all terrible and we are deeply sorry for anyone who had to encounter any of that even from far away. So for everyone who went through that or anyone who had to re-live trauma from either the Garissa tragedy of the Westgate tragedy, don't worry, we all stand together as a nation. And it made me so proud to be a Kenyan and see how everyone stood in solidarity as we picked up the broken pieces. The things I love about my homeland Kenya. The things that make me proud to be Kenyan. Onto todays episode. We continue our conversations about the pleasure gap with Valentine Njoroge and what it means to people in same sex relationships. --------- P R O D U C E D B Y Karen kaz Lucas Sound Engineer: Jaaz odongo --------- B U S I N E S S I N Q U I R I E S For business inquiries, Email - host@thespreadpodcast.com kaz@kazentertainment.com ---------- F I N D M E Instagram -https://www.instagram.com/thespreadpod/ https://www.instagram.com/karenkazlucas/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/thespreadpod/ https://www.facebook.com/karenkazlucas/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/thespreadpod https://twitter.com/Karenkazlucas The Nairobi Flea market: @thenairobifleamarket Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZQIPSbSOzY ---------- O U R G U E S T S Valentine's book ‘Kids and Bodies' - https://zydii.com/courses/course_detail/285/kids-and-bodies-0-5-years IG: @valentine.njoroge Facebook: Valentine Njoroge Youtube: Valentine Njoroge MAYONDE: @mayonde https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzuHbxZ8Z4I ---------- M U S I C MAYONDE: @mayonde https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzuHbxZ8Z4I Thank you all for the LOVE! xx
