The organization is primarily funded by federal government support and municipal contributions. Their fixed routes run from Farmington to Portsmouth, with branches to Somersworth and Berwick, operating Monday through Saturday from as early as 5 a.m. until 9 p.m.Nichols and Williams discuss their technology offerings, including an app that shows real-time bus locations and a texting service at (603) 743-5777 for immediate assistance. They provide updates on their facility expansion project, which is in the final design stage and will include indoor storage for their fleet.Recent initiatives include "Fare Free Saturdays" sponsored by local businesses ($2,500 per day), which has increased ridership by 20-28%. Overall ridership has grown significantly, up 28% last fiscal year and an additional 15% so far this year, attributed to new residents, returning riders, and changing commuting patterns, particularly between Dover, Somersworth, and Rochester. In This Week in Dover History, we learn about an 1885 scandal involving Peter Gagne, who abandoned his wife and children and eloped with Delia Thebeault to Dover. In this episode of the Dover Download podcast, Deputy City Manager Christopher Parker chats with Fire Chief/Emergency Management Director Perry Plummer and Community Services Director John Storer about a recent major water main break in Dover. The conversation begins with Storer explaining how the break was first detected late on the night of Feb. 7 when operators noticed more water leaving the system than normal. Despite immediate efforts to locate the break, it remained elusive even after daylight, prompting activation of the city's Emergency Operations Center under Chief Plummer's direction. The break was releasing approximately 2,000 gallons per minute (about 3 million gallons per day), but unusually, no water was visibly surfacing anywhere in the city.Plummer explains how they implemented an incident command structure to coordinate resources efficiently, including fire and police personnel searching the streets, drones with thermal imaging, helicopter support, and engineers. The team systematically isolated different sections of the water system while simultaneously planning for potential water conservation measures if the situation worsened. They also activated an emergency water interconnection with neighboring Somersworth. After extensive searching, they finally discovered the break at 432 Central Avenue, a vacant building overhanging the Cochecho River. The broken pipe inside the building was sending water directly into the river—a "perfect storm" scenario that made detection especially difficult. Both officials praise the collaborative efforts of city staff and the patience of residents during the incident.Parker then speaks with Erin Bassegio from Planning and Community Development and Brian Early from Media Services for their monthly update on city activities. They discuss recent Planning Board meetings, City Council budget workshops, Energy Commission initiatives, Zoning Board approvals, and updates on the Cochecho Waterfront Development Advisory Committee and the city's two TIF boards.

Audio tech: Bill Rogers Music: "Here Comes the Shutdown", Kevin Healey (khealey.bandcamp.com) Host: Tom Jackson *Hi, it's me, Tom. I did the audio edit, as I always do. You might think that you hear an un-denoised audio hiss in the background, but that's actually rain and downtown traffic, in Somersworth, NH. It was 5PM when we started recording, and it was raining steadily, during the interview, and SomeCity is in a storefront in downtown Somersworth, so the main drag was filled with drive-time traffic, which you can hear, along with the falling rain. I was tempted to sing an acapella version of Tom Waits' "Downtown Train" as an outro for this edition of Joe Public Speaking, but then thought better of it. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tom-jackson2/support

SOMERSWORTH -- When Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Kamala Harris stepped on the stage Sunday for a town hall meeting, the first thing she said was, “I fully intend to win this election.” Her audience roared their approval. Harris spoke at Somersworth High School to a packed crowd, filling the cafeteria with so many people unable to find space that an overflow location with a projector was set up in the gymnasium. “I think we all know we are at a pivotal moment in time, where we are each, as individuals and collectively, being asked, ‘Who are we?’” said Harris. “Part of the answer is that we are better than this. This has become the moment we must fight for the best we are. It’s not a new thing for us to fight for our ideals, not new to fight for our love of country and the for the soul of this country.”

SOMERSWORTH — On a Monday afternoon, there were empty parking spaces all along Main Street. The only cars in sight were the ones passing by. That’s a common occurrence on Main Street, and the city is seeking to put those parking spaces to use with a proposal to relax parking regulations for downtown developers by eliminating the parking requirement for new projects. The City Council is scheduled to consider what’s called the Special Parking District at its Aug. 5 meeting. A public hearing on the proposal is also scheduled that night. The overlay district, as it is proposed now, includes what the city considers three economic centers: one at the intersection of Main, Market and High streets; a second covering the offices on Highland Street and Constitutional way; and a third covering Main Street across from the former GE building.

"Elder" William Wentworth came to New Hampshire in 1639 to Exeter NH as a follower of John Wheelwright. Elder Wentworth moved to Dover, NH in 1649, and was a proprietor of the local sawmill. He and his wife had 11 children, 9 boys. His garrison was the lone surviving garrison from the Cocheco Massacre in 1689. He is responsible for 95% of the Wentworth population in the US and Canada today. One of his sons, Samuel Wentworth would become responsible for the three royal governors. Another one of his sons, Ezekiel Wentworth would own what is now the village of Salmon Falls, Rollinsford and operated a sawmill on the Salmon Falls River. Ezekiel had a son named Paul and Paul built the house in 1701 100 yards from its current location. Paul and his wife had no children, so when he died, his nephew Colonel John Wenworth acquired the house. And John made all the changes that you see today at the house. The whole Wentworth family was in the timber trade and Elder William Wentworth was actually sent over to survey the trees, the family was some of the ones responsible for marking the trees as known in the Pine Tree riots. The inside of the house has a lot of thick pine, some boards that are over 3' wide. Therefore, when Paul built his house he did so illegally. Probably thinking the King probably isn't going to come all the way over from England to inspect. Frederick Newton Blodgett saw that the expansion of the railroad might see the demise of his ancestral house and thought that the house would fall under further disrepair if it stayed where it was. He was a budding businessman from Dover, MA so he decided to have the house completely disassembled and moved down to Dover, MA in 1936. It sits on the original property however moved to Dover Mass and then moved back in 2002. The first 2 owners owned slaves There was a lean-to attic that they slaves stayed in. At any time there were 8-10 slaves at the house at any given time. The lean-to attic was built in roughly 1750. They had a Rollinsford historical exhibit on the second floor. an 1887 bird's eye view of what Rollinsford looked like at the time. When Rollinsford was created from Somersworth, it was named after their 2 most prominent families, the Rollins and Wallingford families. https://www.paulwentworthhouse.org/the-colonel-paul-wentworth-house/ Suggestions/Feedback Do you have a topic that you would like for us to discuss? How much fun to co-create! How much fun to collaborate in thoughtful conversation! Today’s show is part one of a conversation that What In God’s Name facilitated on February 23rd, in Pembroke, New Hampshire. Our topic was one we have tackled before: toxic masculinity. It’s a topic that touches on many issues in our culture, and often in our news, today. If you like today’s show, leave a review for us on Apple Podcasts (or Stitcher, or Spotify). Post our podcast on your Facebook page. Be in touch. Our email: whatingods@ribeye-media.com. Learn more. Our website: www.whatingods.com Here are timecodes to help you navigate through today’s show: 01:29    Jeff from Somersworth, NH, leads with the question of literalistic readings of the Bible: already at the heart of where many conversations between Christians—and between some Christians and non-Christians—about society and culture hit a snag. What is the difference between reading the Bible literally, and reading the Bible seriously? 02:40    Linda from Amherst, NH, makes the distinction between some things the Bible says, and how Jesus behaves. What different kinds of moral practices can we see, at different points of the Scriptural witness? 05:10    Dorothy from Jaffrey, NH, draws our attention to historical imagination: the need for us to recognize that a person is always limited to the perspectives of the historical time in which she/he lived. This calls us to bring historical awareness to the reading of Scripture. 06:50    What In God’s Name is having a funding campaign: support the core values of curiosity, depth, and shining light into the public conversation by going to our website www.whatingods.com, and making a donation through Patreon, or through Filmmakers Collaborative. 08:22    Matt, freshly removed to Vermont, shares reflections on the pernicious nature of toxic masculinity. He refers us to the wisdom that, if we are seeing clearly, we see that the evil we abhor is not just out there, but it’s in us too. Is this true about human nature? 11:30    Chris asks: can Christian theology help us think about what is healthy masculinity/healthy femininity? Joyce from Dunbarton, NH, responds by inviting us to think of Biblical images of a nurturing God—the quality of supporting and feeding and strengthening the life of others. 14:30    Shayna and Chris share follow-up thoughts about reading Scripture seriously. Does the fact that no one perspective can grasp truth in its totality, mean that truth does not exist? Does insisting that any reading of Scripture is limited by the reader’s social location mean that any reading of Scripture is just as good as any other?

This week on The Freecast, we discuss the NH ACLU wins case against the US Customs & Border Protection, SWAT team activity, no more wine in the mail, and more. Featuring Host: Nick Boyle Engineered by: Matt Carano Produced by: Tom Hudson, Matt Carano, and Nick Boyle   News NH ACLU wins case against U.S. customs and border protection We've covered the checkpoints issue a couple times now; Season 2 episode 11 Season 2 Episode 16 http://freecoastfreecast.libsyn.com/size/25/?search=checkpoint A state court found that CBP broke the law by setting up “checkpoints” far from the border to ensnare marijuana users and that local law enforcement violated the state constitution by colluding with CBP officers to search vehicles for drugs. As a result, the court suppressed all evidence of drug possession gathered by police at the checkpoints. CBP decided to set up a checkpoint in Woodstock, 90 miles from the border. The ostensible purpose of the checkpoint was to enforce immigration law, and officers demanded proof of citizenship from drivers who passed through. But they also brought drug-sniffing dogs, allegedly to help them “detect concealed humans.” As the American Civil Liberties Union of New Hampshire later exposed in court, the real purpose of these drug-sniffing dogs was, naturally, to find drugs. But the U.S. attorney for the state does not bring federal charges against those carrying small amounts of cannabis. So CBP asked the Woodstock Police Department to participate in its checkpoint. The two agencies decided to work together. CBP would stop drivers and have a dog sniff their cars. If the dog “signaled,” a CBP officer would search the car. If the officer found drugs, he would hand them off to WPD, which would press charges for drug possession. This cooperation was a gift to the Woodstock police for two reasons. First, New Hampshire's marijuana decriminalization law would take effect within just weeks; by working with CBP, local law enforcement could maximize its marijuana prosecutions before it lost the power to arrest cannabis users. Second, and more importantly, the New Hampshire Constitution prohibits canine searches of vehicles without a reasonable suspicion of criminal activity—unlike the federal Fourth Amendment, which permits them. Thus, by teaming up with CBP, the Woodstock police hoped to reap the rewards of searches it could not legally conduct on its own. In an astonishing passage, Rappa found that CBP had attempted to deceive the court and that the agency's real intention was to search cars for drugs with no reasonable suspicion. “While the stated purpose of the checkpoints in this matter was screening for immigration violations,” the judge wrote, “the primary purpose of the action was detection and seizure of drugs.” CBP agents were “aware of that prior to setting up the checkpoints which is precisely why they felt the need to reach out to the state and local agencies for assistance.” Rappa pointed to emails exchanged between CBP and WPD that make it “patently clear that the primary purpose” of WPD's presence was to seize their drugs for state prosecution. “As such,” he concluded, “the checkpoints were unconstitutional under both state and federal law.” https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2018/05/new-hampshire-aclu-wins-case-against-customs-and-border-protection-dragnet.html Somersworth apartment raided by SWAT on warrant for drugs, namely heroin Green st in Somersworth 19 hour “standoff” 5 people arrested, one person on the run An AR-15, a shotgun and a revolver were seized. A replica Sig-Sauer AR-15, three airsoft pistols and two crossbows were also seized. In addition to the guns, crack cocaine, loaded heroin needles and drug paraphernalia were also taken. Starting late Thursday night, periodic loud pops could be heard coming from the residence. The pops were reportedly heard as far away as downtown Rollinsford. The standoff included the use of a New Hampshire State Police battering ram attached to a Bearcat, and several heavily armed and armored law enforcement officers wearing gas masks. A small bomb-disposal robot was also on the scene. Throughout the standoff, police could be heard intermittently using loudspeakers or bull horns to attempt communication with someone inside the dwelling, trying to talk to a person named “Robert.” “Robert, this is the State Police. Grocers Association — to ban shipment of wine into New Hampshire from certain mail-order retailers the bill's proponents argue cost the state millions in lost sales each year. New Hampshire Liquor Commission (NHLC) spokesman E.J. She received private tutoring from her brothers growing up and later became a teacher herself at a school in her hometown. She married lawyer David Hale in 1813, and the couple went to have five children. David died of a stroke in 1822, and, after working in the millinery trade for a short time, Sarah embarked on a career as a writer and editor to support her family. She went on to anonymously pen the 1823 book The Genius of Oblivion and Other Original Poems, and a few years later released the novel Northwood: A Tale of New England (1827). Famed Publishing Career and Poetry Towards the end of the decade, Hale took on a position as editor of Ladies' Magazine, later called American Ladies' Magazine. She did a bulk of the writing for the publication while also relying on other contributors for original content, though in 1837 the magazine was acquired by Louis Godey. It eventually became known as Godey's Lady's Book, and Hale continued to work for the magazine for 40 years, relocating to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and focusing on what was seen as feminine etiquette of the day. The publication would eventually have a circulation of 150,000 and published the work of prominent scribes like Harriet Beecher Stowe, Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hale had also worked with childhood educators and penned Poems for Our Children (1830), which included the poem “Mary's Lamb,” later becoming widely known as “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Over the forthcoming decades, Hale continued to release works from a variety of genres, including Three Hours; or, The Vigil of Love: and Other Poems (1848) and Women's Record; or, Sketches of All Distinguished Women, from “The Beginning” till A.D. 1850, which had multiple editions and is credited as the first work to honor female writers. Girls' Education and Thanksgiving Hale was a staunch proponent of education for girls and women, pushing for entrance into professions like teaching and eventually medicine. She helped establish the Troy Female Seminary and finance Vassar College and campaigned for women to join the institution's faculty. But Hale did not support suffrage and the feminist call for equal access to a wide range of work and did not take up abolitionist causes with other women reformers, though she took an anti-slavery stance in Northwood. Hale has also been called by some the Mother or Godmother of Thanksgiving as she ardently pushed for some time to have the day recognized as a national holiday. Thanksgiving was regularly celebrated by different parts of the country, but not in a particularly unified way. During the Civil War, Hale wrote a letter to President Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of State William Seward in 1863 calling upon the leaders to declare Thanksgiving a national holiday. The president followed suit, ultimately leading to a fixed time of annual celebration over the years. Sarah J. Hale retired at the age of 89 from the editorial and writing work that came to define and enrich her life. She died on April 30, 1879 in Philadelphia. https://www.biography.com/people/sarah-josepha-hale Suggestions/Feedback Do you have a topic that you would like for us to discuss? Two are visited at night by a spirit that speaks to them, and the other was strangled by invisible forces. Amy and Adam know that strangulation, midnight visits and bizarre voices are a dangerous combination. They learn that a couple of blocks away from the house was the site of what was dubbed “The Murder of the Century” in 1897, in which Joseph Kelley killed a bank cashier. Even more shocking, a gravestone is discovered in the homeowner’s backyard. Kindred-Spirits-620 AMY BRUNI Amy Bruni first encountered paranormal activity as a six-year-old when her family moved to Alameda, California. Her family had no idea their home was haunted until Amy witnessed a full-body apparition of a man dressed in green. Years later, Amy discovered the ghost was the landlord’s son who died in World War II. Amy’s

Portsmouth PD has a quota, they don't want to call it a quota, but when you create benchmarks that include how many traffic stops and tickets their officers write, and then evaluate their performance based on these benchmarks, it's a quota. This incentivizes officers who understandably want to get promoted and compensated for doing a good job, to meet these benchmarks, which creates more traffic stops and more tickets. This is a problem and we'll discuss it next on the Freecast. News Portsmouth PD have a quota system Portsmouth city patrol officers claim they're working under a new quota mandate for writing tickets and “other performance benchmarks” while Chief David Mara said there are no quotas and he's opposed to them Mara said his officers have been instructed that if they're not busy answering calls, they should be enforcing traffic laws and giving tickets to drivers who break them. The police union is demanding to bargain with the Police Commission because a “de facto quota system” has been used for their performance evaluations in March. On this episode of the Freecast, The Coat Lives, Coast Transportation is a Sieve, and the north country gets combative. Let's hit it. NEWS Coat of arms, staying or going? Seacoast online came out with an article on April 14th that caused a bit of a stir, claiming that the historic district commission approved the renovation and creation of a new restaurant where the coat of arms currently is. When Seacoast online tried to reach Coat of Arms for comment, whoever answered said we have no comment and hung up. And the Coat of Arms had a hilarious response on their facebook page the following day, April 15th saying that “If we ever decide to knock it on the head we will let you know.” and had the Monty Python's Holy Grail clip from the “I'm not dead yet” scene. Assuming this article is correct, the new design for the building would paint the exterior white and on the right facing side of the building there is a huge jackalope(a rabbit with deer antlers) Former city councilor Esther Kennedy questioned the art during public comment on the project saying she was “really discouraged” by the artwork. “I'm looking at this when I realized it was a bunny rabbit I was thinking ... is this the bunny palace or what is it we're promoting here? I'm having a hard time with that particular piece of art.” Portsmouth's recent fire on state street sparks the oh-so-predictable debate on whether the fire code needs to be updated. Portsmouth Fire Chief, Steve Achilles, told Portsmouth city council that a sprinkler system probably would have saved State Street Saloon. City Councilor Eric Spear referenced the lack of a sprinkler system in the State Street Saloon building and said “what might be good for other parts of New Hampshire, might not be good for Portsmouth.” In terms of requiring restaurants to use sprinkler systems, Portsmouth's ordinances are based on state fire code, Achilles said. The state code requirements are based on the type of building, what it's used for, the number of seats, and the number of people who visit the establishment. The state code didn't require the State Street Saloon building to be sprinkled. Due to the Dillon rule, it's improbable that the city of Portsmouth can pass an ordinance regulating sprinklers further than state law. Questions for Mike: What would happen in a stateless society if you owned an adjacent building? Would you have recourse? Rochester fairgrounds in financial trouble, may not have a fair this year Approximately $1 million in the hole $800k in mortgage debt and $150k needed for capital improvements The fair hasn't made money for at least the past 5 years The fair has been an annual tradition every September since 1874, this would be the 144th fair this September. Private funding for fair so that's cool... COAST bus looking for a free ride from the taxpayer The Cooperative Alliance for Seacoast Transportation, more commonly known as the COAST bus is celebrating its 35th anniversary. Their annual budget is $6.2 million partly funded from bus fares, advertising and federal and local dollars. About 60 percent of the government funding COAST receives is federal money. In all communities except Somersworth, most bus rides cost $1.50 regardless of boarding location or destination. COAST offers several ticket options, including a 15-ride punch ticket for $20 and a monthly pass for $52. Most routes are free for passengers displaying a valid University of New Hampshire or Wildcat Transit ID. Special Guest Kyle Mohney! Freecoast Festival information - “Living a Voluntary Life, Today!” Why can't we start living our principles today, without waiting for the government to get out of our lives? At Freecoast Festival, we will be talking about that. We will have a panel on parenting voluntarily headed by Ken Justice to talk about ways that we can raise our children without coercion and force. Our two main speakers, Hannah Braime and Jake Desyllas, will also be talking specifically about this topic and go more in-depth with how they live their voluntary life. Philosophy of Liberty Homeschooling vs Unschooling. What is the difference? How do Kyle and Rodger educate their children? Seacoast History Republic of Indian Stream Pittsburg Land border with Vermont Only town in NH to border Maine and Vermont More than double the size of the next largest town in NH, (Lincoln) Treaty of Paris 1783 resolving the American Revolution created an ambiguity, Typical government… Relevant text from the treaty, “... (westward) along the said highlands which divide those rivers that empty themselves into the river St. Lawrence, from those which fall into the Atlantic Ocean, to the northwesternmost head of the Connecticut River; thence down along the middle of that river to the forty-fifth degree of north latitude; from thence by a line due west on said latitude ... " The surveyor of the 45th parallel put the line about ¾ mi north of the actual parallel giving more land to Vermont To be fair, the lands at that time were mostly inhabited by Indians and was most likely never visited by whites so the physiology of the rivers and tributaries probably wasn't known For those who don't know the geography, the Connecticut river forms the western border of NH and around the northern border of Vermont, the river has a bend eastward and then northward at the 4 Connecticut lakes. So the start of the Connecticut river starts about halfway between Vermont and Maine and the tip of the “cap” The key issue is what is the northwesternmost head, Is it the head of the actual named river? Or is it the head of the northwesternmost tributary? Both Britain and NH claimed both of these areas Most of the settlers of the area were from the US, only a handful of families were from Lower Canada(modern day Quebec). The area became de facto part of NH. And taxes were paid to NH from time to time. By 1830 a majority of the inhabitants said that it Indian Stream was part of the United States but not NH. The federal officers of NH and Vermont then countered in 1831, levying customs duties on their goods as they entered the states In 1831 British Canada forced some of the Indian Stream citizens to perform military duty July 9th 1832 Indian Stream declared independence and passed a constitution, I read it all. Very similar to the US constitution with exception of the branches of government. (Can elaborate if necessary) Most relevant part of the Constitution: “Part Second — Form of Government The people inhabiting the Territory formerly called Indian Stream Territory do hereby solemnly and mutually agree with each other to form themselves into a body politic by the name of Indian Stream and in that capacity to exercise all the powers of a free, sovereign and independent state, so far as it relates to our own internal Government till such time as we can ascertain to what government we properly belong.” The first couple of years there wasn't much incident. July 1835 the sheriff of Coös County asked for the militia to come. The sheriff preceded the militia and appeared before the assembly in August and issued an ultimatum saying we will occupy by force or “voluntarily” The assembly capitulated and gave up and ceded authority to NH. British not happy In October 1835 deputy sheriff of Coös county, Richard Blanchard and fellow “streamer” led a small party to arrest John Tyler(no relation to President Tyler) for an unpaid hardware store debt and escape arrest on the way to Lancaster to jail. Later on that month three men, one of whom was Tyler, came to Blanchard's house and arrested him on the ground that Blanchard had been concerned in an unlawful attempt to arrest Tyler, a subject of His Majesty. And brought him to nearby Hereford in Lower Canada. Blanchard's 14-year-old son, roused alarm throughout the town and the NH leaning men went south to alert the citizens of NH of the arrest. About 30 men came to Blanchard's rescue in Canada and retrieved him. A $5 bounty was awarded for the arrest of Tyler. Two of the thirty men went by horseback to Canadian judge Alexander Rea's house armed to arrest Tyler. Rea ordered them off the king's highway and one of the people tried to grab the horse by the griddle and the others started throwing rocks towards the 2 men. A warning shot from the NH party was fired and the rest of the thirty men came The Canadian judge went running for the woods with his party but was caught and fell then surrendered. One Canadian was shot in the groin but survived and Judge Rea had a saber injury to his scalp. This incident causes the NH militia to send 50 troops to occupy Indian Stream to avoid any further uprising. This caused a diplomatic crisis and both British and American governments decided a war started over an unpaid hardware store debt wasn't a good idea. Canada kept a hands-off approach until the border was resolved. 1840 residents petition to change the name of the town to Pittsburg, named after William Pitt, Prime Minister of England. 1842 Webster-Ashburton treaty is signed, ending the border dispute.   Social media Freecoast Fest will be here before you know it. On this episode of the Freecast, the most ridiculous job title I've ever heard is the Disproportionate Minority Contact Coordinator. I should have been more prepared during the podcast to respond to those absurd words. But what's not absurd is NH's #2 best state to live in rank in a recent USnews list, but second to Mass? Not so fast, or at least not as fast as Jory and Patrick's legendary skim across Weirs channel. Badass, next on the Freecast. News  Seacoast police departments are having a hard time finding minorities to hire, in a place that has a very small minority population. The local police departments make the point that all government departments should reflect the face of their community. So, if there are minorities in the community there ought to be minorities in the police community. They also say that if there are no minority police officers, then few minorities would want to be police officers since there are no role models. Dover Police Chief Anthony Calarusso says, "I don't know why anybody would want to be a police officer nowadays." We couldn't agree more! In 2014, only 33 of 478 officers who took the test to start the process of becoming a police officer identifies as a race other than white. In 2015, out of 411 test takers on 9 were black. Andrew Smith, Disproportionate Minority Contact Coordinator, says recruiting and retaining minority officers is a matter of extreme importance, even in a state as homogeneous as New Hampshire. Why does this job even exist? __ NH Governor Chris Sununununu signed the Constitutional Carry bill into law allowing those legally allowed to own a weapon to carry it concealed in public. __ New Hampshire has the second highest in a list of state's property tax burden, according to Wallethub. However, the overall tax burden of NH put it in 47th place, with only Tennessee, Delaware, and Alaska having a lower tax burden. __ Two men were arrested in Laconia for skimming, which is when a snowmobile skims along the top of the water. One of the men was driving the snowmobile while the other was being pulled behind on water skis. The two men posted a video of their victimless crime on social media, which led the Fish and Game to worry about copycats. The two men, Jory Vachon, 28, and Patrick Keefer, 32, both of Meredith are facing disorderly conduct charges in relation to the Saturday incident. A Go Fund Me campaign was started to pay their fines and it has already brought in enough to pay the fines twice over.  __ NH ranks as the second best state to live in, according to US News. However, this has to be taken with a grain of salt, since Massachusetts came in first place. New Hampshire was ranked third in education, fourth in health care, first in opportunity. __ The Somersworth zoning board it refusing to change the zoning on a house to convert it into apartments because three neighbors are complaining. These neighbors are using the force of government to get their way.   Sponsor North to Port is a podcast and musical album project created by our own Matt Carano.   Local happenings Liberty Meetup at LaFest in Dover on March 2, Hampton March 9. It is the only place in the United States with the feature. For nearly three decades, the Rochester Opera House was the hub for entertainment: plays, minstrels, vaudeville, concerts, ‘moving pictures' and elegant balls and for civic events; inaugurals, political rallies, and lectures. Lacking an auditorium and a gymnasium, Rochester High School relied on the Opera House to stage their athletic events, assemblies, dances, and commencements. Around WWII Spaulding High School had been built with its own gymnasium and auditorium Floor moving system nearly dismantled but it wasn't due to lack of funds. Operation continued until 1974 with mostly Broadway replica musicals as many as 10 a summer. Closed in 1974 By 1984 the Opera House lay in disrepair unused. Members of the Rochester Heritage Trust and Arts Rochester launched the first Opera House Restoration Project. The estimate to repair the system in 1987 was $1,220,000. 1997 Mayor Harvey Bernier said of the restoration project, “This project touches the very soul of Rochester - who we were yesterday, who we are today, and who we will be tomorrow. It is a defining moment for us, my friends, and believe me - we will not fail!" $300,000 in voluntary donations and some stolen taxpayer funds and 10,000 hours of volunteer labor, it was finally reopened soon after. In 2007 the Opera house's moving floor mechanism was failing and was almost closed again for its centennial year. More taxpayer dollars and donations came and it was repaired. Welcome to Episode 43 of the Joshua Gagnon Leadership Podcast! Activate 2016 was hosted at Next Level Church in Somersworth, NH on Wednesday, September 21, and included powerful worship, educational breakout sessions, and inspiring words from Mark Batterson, Levi Lusko, and Larry Osborne. Over 400 church leaders were in attendance with over 100 churches represented from 8 different states. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this awesome leadership conference! Early Bird tickets are now on sale for Activate 2017. Visit www.activateleaders.com for more information and to sign your team up. This episode focuses on several trends which Pastor Josh Gagnon predicts we will see in American churches. If you are interested in this topic or would like more information, email info@joshuagagnon.com 3 Takeaways For Leaders: 1. If you want to reach more people at your church, you have to create more options for families to fit their schedule. Cultural trends are constantly changing, and because of this churches need to be adaptable. We cannot expect families to fit within our schedules if we are not willing to fit within theirs first. 2. The next trend for the American church will be mid-week worship services. Pastor Josh shares that he noticed how little time families have together, and we as church leaders have to understand that most families would rather not spend the time they do have together in church on the weekends. Holding a church service on a weeknight has proven effective for NLC because they recognized this. 3. Find ways to relate to your church as much as possible. The location pastors of NLC are required to work a full work week at another business or workplace once a year. Doing this accomplishes two things: 1) experiencing what their church members experience on a day-to-day basis and understanding their needs a little better, and 2) gaining a new appreciation for the work they have the privilege of doing to advance God's Kingdom. Quotes From This Episode: “What can we do to meet them where they're at rather than having them come meet us where we're at?” - Josh Gagnon “We don't think church should get in the way of family, we think church should build family.” - Josh Gagnon “Whatever you do is going to cost you something, just make sure what you're doing is paying off in the way that is valuable to take away the cost.” - Josh Gagnon “How do we keep it from being a career and keep it being a calling?” - Roman Archer “Different jobs come with different difficulties.” - Josh Gagnon “When you lead through the ‘why' and not the ‘what', people will respond.” - Josh Gagnon

The church has grown from 128 to over 11,000 in weekend attendance, and has been honored as one of the ten most influential churches in America for its pioneering efforts in the multi-site movement, sermon-based small groups, and its creative approach to shared leadership. Understand the world you live in. Pastor Larry explained that he regularly reads news articles from various news sources and reads topics that he might not even have much interest in. He does this to be well-versed in the society he lives in so that he can better understand the culture he is trying to reach. 2. Use plain language from the stage. If you're trying to reach those who are “not yet Christians”, as Pastor Larry puts it, they will be receptive to anything you preach from the Bible as long as you speak using words they will understand. Pastor Larry mentioned that they just wrapped a teaching series at North Coast about the book of Exodus, which was received well by his church because he spoke in a way they could understand and learn how it applies to their lives. 3. Culture is going in the direction of having everything “on demand”, and the church will soon follow that trend. Entertainment is catered to when and where people want it, from listening to a personalized music playlist to being able to reruns of TV shows at your convenience. Holding mid-week church services gives people that same level of convenience and will perhaps be the norm among modern churches. Quotes From This Episode: “One of our goals was to be a brick in the building God was building somewhere else.” - Larry Osborne “Part of the problem sometimes with youth is that your insecurity shows up because you try to act more in control and wiser than you are.” - Larry Osborne “We all overestimate what we can do in one year and underestimate what God can do in five.” - Larry Osborne “Some of the greatest solutions to our toughest problems come from people who are outside of our own little world.” - Larry Osborne “Live in the world that the people you're trying to serve live in.” - Roman Archer “What has already happened that nobody noticed?” - Larry Osborne “You can have a lot of great ideas, but if you try to chase them all, you'll get in trouble.” - Larry Osborne “God's will often has a ‘what to do', but it also has a ‘when to do it'.” - Larry Osborne

Focus. Have a clear idea of who you're going to be, what you're going to be, where you're going, and where you're not going. Decide what systems, strategies, and models you will set in place, and find your own focus that will work within your culture, context, and location. 2. Faculty. A multi-site approach will only work if you invest time in developing your leaders for multiple locations. Raise a team of leaders who will carry your church culture with them to other locations. 3. Facilities. Unless you can find spaces to meet in, you're not going to be able to start new locations. Establish non-negotiables that fit the vision you have for your church. 4. Finances. Make sure you have the finances and resources you need before even considering going multi-site. Once your finances are stabilized and secure in one location, it may have the means to support other locations. Quotes From This Episode: “Multi-site isn't for everyone and we have to be okay with that.” - Josh Gagnon “We've got to make sure who we are is obedient to who God calls us to be.” - Josh Gagnon “A good idea isn't always a God idea.” - Josh Gagnon “We get so polluted in the church world when we try to pretend that everybody is called to what we're called to.” - Josh Gagnon “We can't get caught up in what's better, we have to be caught up in who we are.” - Josh Gagnon “Multi-site doesn't fix the problems in leadership you have, multi-site multiplies the problems you have in leadership.” - Josh Gagnon “I would rather wait to launch the right location in the right facility than too quickly launch the right location in the wrong facility.” - Josh Gagnon

Jenni has served on the executive leadership teams of Menlo Church in Menlo Park, CA and Cross Point Church in Nashville, TN. Prior to ministry leadership, she worked as Artist Development Director in the Christian music industry. Jenni speaks at conferences and churches nationwide, seeking to help others develop their leadership gifts and lead confidently in the different spheres of influence God has granted them. Additionally, she consults with individuals and teams on leadership and organizational health. Jenni has written several books including Clout: Discover and Unleash Your God-Given Influence and The 4 Dimensions of Extraordinary Leadership. Be open to God's prompting, whether you're asking something big of someone or you're the one being asked. In Jenni's case, she was the one being asked to do something she never would have considered, but because of current circumstances in her life she was able to say “Yes”. As a leader, you may need to make a big ask of someone who might say “No”, but you don't know that for sure. So ask anyway. 2. Relational leadership is integral for successful leadership. When Jenni transitioned from corporate leadership to church leadership, she learned an important lesson: See the people you are leading as people, not as a means to your end. 3. If you want to find better ways to engage your church, you have to be willing to listen to your church. There is no “one size fits all” approach to church. Each body of believers is different, which is highly influenced by the culture they find themselves in. You'll never know how to meet the needs of your church until you know what those needs are, and in order to attain this knowledge, you need to listen. Quotes From This Episode: “Our job is to be faithful to the prompting God might put on our heart. God's responsible for outcomes.” - Jenni Catron “Don't say ‘No' for them.” - Jenni Catron “It's remarkable how God is at work when we're just faithful and obedient.” - Jenni Catron “A lot of times we will try to manufacture things that feel successful as leaders.” - Jenni Catron “Our job isn't to make people happy, it's to help people become better.” - Jenni Catron “Sometimes we exchange that person being happy for us in this moment for actually what's best for that person and their growth and their development.” - Jenni Catron

When it comes to your volunteers, make sure they are placed in an area where they are passionate and that they're not just filling a need. Just because you are short in one area doesn't mean anyone can fill it. Make sure your volunteers are serving in places that feed into their strengths and passions. 2. Meet parents where they're at and partner with them to grow their kids in their relationship with God. Parents are the biggest influencers in a child's life, so work together towards a common goal of moving their children to life in Christ. In order to do this, you must communicate with them as much as possible to ensure their child is understanding their lessons and applying them to their lives. 3. Change is inevitable, so understanding the “why” behind the change is crucial to accepting that change. Cast vision to your team so they can see the reason for the change and get behind it. Lead the way in being adaptable as long as the change aligns with your cause. Quotes From This Episode: “The quickest way for the devil to chew you up and spit you out on the other side of ministry is to never communicate and never reach out for help.” - Josh Gagnon “The church is always one generation short of extinction.” - Warren Wiersbe “The only thing constant is change.” - Roman Archer

Often times, when younger leaders push for change, older leaders will struggle with allowing the change and not completely support them. You have to be willing to back your younger leaders' ideas like they were your own, and don't throw them under the bus if their ideas fall through. Relevancy is not as important as what the church's values are. Remember what your church is built upon, and don't try and change it just for the sake of making it more attractive for younger people. Whit expressed that his ultimate desire for church is for it to allow life change, and the “relevant” tools we use, such as lights and haze, are just that--tools. As long as they are working towards the goal of furthering God's Kingdom, then they will be utilized. Have extreme intentionality. Work hard, because you care. Everything you do has to have a reason behind it. Whit shared that he works hard because he is intentional with everything he does. Every worship set, graphic, and sermon series should be chosen with care and consideration. Always ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?” Quotes From This Episode: “People are naturally afraid of change.” - Whit George “Go slower than you think you need to...but don't move until you have complete conviction.” - Whit George “Young people are smart enough to be able to smell the same package wrapped in a different wrapper.” - Whit George “You have to care about the people of your community as much or more so as the people you already have.” - Whit George “Lights and smoke have never made anything relevant. Relevant is about what it means in your life.” - Whit George “A lot of people are allowing a model to create change rather than culture.” - Josh Gagnon “We have to be okay with the reality that there are churches that won't be like us that still work today.” - Josh Gagnon “The only thing that I care about is that what I'm working on works.” - Whit George “When we're wowed, we have a tendency to say ‘how?'...If you flip that around and you have a bad experience, you don't ask ‘how?' you just ask ‘why?'” - Whit George

Take calculated risks to an extent, then go with your gut the rest of the way. Lee admits that after every great obstacle he faced, life just got better for him, and it's because he took a risk. He expressed his desire to never live with regrets, which prompted him to move several times and step out of his comfort zone. Get better before you get bigger. Many times the temptation for growing organizations can be to boast about the size, but rather than tell others how big you are, you should focus on getting better. The size does not matter as much as the quality of the product you are offering. Focus on culture before vision. Lee said there are three things they focus on at Disney: hiring better, training better, and having a better culture. The culture they create is one where everybody matters and they know they matter. For every hire, leaders must show them that they matter, and the best way to do so is by telling them. Quotes From This Episode: “Spend a lot of time every day thinking—it's a very good habit to get into.” – Lee Cockerell “Culture has to be the foundation which vision and mission are built off of.” – Josh Gagnon “Culture's not part of the game, culture is the game.” – Lee Cockerell “The more you can know about a person, that sends the message that you care about them.” – Lee Cockerell “Opportunity is the best benefit any organization can give you.” – Lee Cockerell “If you need [volunteers], let them know they matter and that what they're doing matters.” – Josh Gagnon “Leaders want to present the highlight reel, and those looking at that highlight reel feel more insecure about their reality.” – Josh Gagnon “The fastest way to forget what God thinks of us is to be consumed by what everyone around us does.” – Josh Gagnon

You can expect this episode to be extremely eye opening as Ben shares his story, as well as how he has seen the church deal with the issue of homosexuality and where he thinks the church is missing the point. This episode is a continuation of an interview Pastor Josh had with Gordon MacDonald. If you have not listened to part 1, please do so before continuing this episode! Here are some of highlights from this episode: Some of the disciplines Pastor Gordon has developed over the years that bring depth to his life both personally and as a Christian leader: • Being a man of the Word. We must be committed to God's Word by absorbing and memorizing it. • Reading biographies of past Christian leaders • Prayer • Accountability to a mentor and close friends • Asking questions. Few people know how to ask questions. As leaders, we must pry into people to help them grow spiritually. “Your peers help you to create, but your mentors help you to go deep.” – Gordon MacDonald “Asking questions is a powerful key to spiritual development and growth.” – Gordon MacDonald Every person has a story. Asking questions engages people to truly think about their honest answers. Hard questions force you to account for the depth of your life. Be the leader who doesn't just ask surface level questions, but who reveals their motives by the first question they ask. “The questions you ask will reveal the motives of your heart.” – Josh Gagnon The best piece of advice Gordon ever received for his marriage was, “God means to say many things to you through [your wife]; listen to her.” For any men in ministry, it is important to remember that your wife will have many things to say to you that you need to hear. Treat your wife with dignity and respect and help her recognize her spiritual gifts, then draw upon them. “Your job is to help your wife to become everything God wants her to be.” – Gordon MacDonald As a father, always commit to making your children a priority over ministry. Your children should know that they come first. “If you need to work a lot of hours, punish yourself…don't punish your family.” – Josh Gagnon “Make sure your priority list starts with the people who will be standing around your grave.” – Gail MacDonald
