So many of us like to stay behind the scenes. Although we desire to be at the forefront of our business, so many of us stay small out of fear. We fear being seen. We fear how we’re going to be perceived. We fear uncertainty. But guess what? You can have the best business in the world, but without visibility, you won’t succeed. Why don't women self-promote? Since self-promotion is a common part of business, those of us who do more self-promotion may have better chances of being hired by clients, getting speaking opportunities, and media features. You simply cannot grow if you are the best-kept secret in your industry. But putting yourself out there can be scary and uncomfortable, right? One of my first major visibility opportunities was, Emceeing the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship Annual event. Basically, it was a must-attend gala for many of New York's elite philanthropists and corporate givers. I was terrified. But I did it! And got invited back to Emcee several times after. Since then, I have gotten REALLY comfortable getting in front of an audience and you will too after you hear this interview. …and getting visible is not nearly as difficult as you think! Today, I'm sharing a conversation with my long-time business friend Lucinda Cross-Oti, CEO at Activate Worldwide. She is one of the best people that I can think of to inspire you to get out of your own way and start shamelessly self-promoting. Lucinda overcame what felt like a shameful dark past that she thought would keep her from getting clients and turned her personal story into a product that has allowed her to work with national brands like Walmart, Essence Magazine, and be featured on a BET show, Queen Boss. In this episode of Breadwinning Women, we cover everything from finding your RIGHT story to the EXACT step-by-step process you can take to be your own publicist. Ready to get visible and blow-up the internet with your business and personal brand? Well, tune in my friend because you are going to love this. When it comes to asking for what you want in life, are you the type of person who tries to figure things out on your own or are you the type of person who is willing to ask for help and support? For many women, myself included, it’s hard for us to ask for what we want because we’re not taught to ask. For me, I think about why I waited so long to ask for help when my business was crumbling in the last recession and it’s because I grew up in a household where I was not taught to ask. I was taught to figure it out. Combine that with the fear many of us have about asking for support, and it’s no surprise so many women hold themselves back professionally, as entrepreneurs, and even in their relationships. Today, Lucinda Cross, author of The Big ASK and an International speaker and influencer, joins us to unpack why so many of us fear asking for help. Lucinda pulls from her own experiences and from the hundreds of people she’s interviewed on this subject and has come up with some practical steps you can take now to get closer to asking your big ASK. Day: 004 Date: Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020 Note from Aimee J.: Do something nice for yourself today! You deserve it!! Topic: Visualize Your Goals Action: Create your own vision board. You don’t have to go to extremes. Use what you have at your fingertips. Use cut outs from magazines, print pictures from the internet, or sketch it out. Put it onto a posterboard, or dry erase board that you won’t erase, or print it on a piece of paper. Whatever you have. Add pictures to the vision board that represent the dreams you want to pursue and make happen. Think this year, think next 5 and 10 years. Don’t limit yourself. Then put it up in your room where you can see it and remind yourself of what dreams you are chasing. You can do it! Affirmations: You are Awesome. You are Loved. You are Needed. And most importantly, YOU ARE ENOUGH. Resources & Links: Lilly Singh - How to Properly Make a Vision Board Lucinda Cross on Chasing Dreams with Aimee J. How are you guys doing? Today is Saturday, January 4th, 2020. I'm Aimee J. Jay. Thank you guys so much for tuning in. It's a joy to be here. It's a joy to support you. Know that I think you are fantastic and amazing and I can't wait to see what today brings for you. So these past few days we've been talking about different things we've talked about gratitude, affirmations, setting goals. But one of the things we have ongoing for this first week of January is talking about what we are grateful for. Naming three things we are grateful for. And I'm doing it with you guys. So three things I'm grateful for today. One, uh, my friends, my friends, the Kadavil's. Uh, does it matter how much time has passed? It feels like no time has passed when we're together and I got to catch up with them yesterday and it was fantastic. We had a wonderful time. Um, and I just love these guys. They're true to heart. They're great friends. They're always supported me even from afar. And it's always great to kind of reconnect and so grateful for them. I'm grateful for Stouffer's lasagna. Um, their meat lasagna was delicious. I had it yesterday and it was good. Nothing against homemade lasagna's. Those are just as good by sister makes a mean meat lasagna. I just, I, I'm a fan of Stover's. It's delicious and it doesn't bother my dad as much, you know, with the sauce and stuff. So it's good. I'm thankful for that. I don't get it often. So be grateful for what you have. And I'm grateful for my Sactional in my office. For years, I've always wanted a, a sectional and a, which is a sofa from Lovesac and um, you know, I got it on sale. You should always buy it on sale when the covers were free with the Sactional you buy and you know, it's kind of a dream come true that it's here and there for me to take a nap if I need to or just sit and read a book. It's fantastic. So I'm grateful for that. What are three things you guys are grateful for today? Remember, if you can try to find three different things. It doesn't have to be huge. It can be small. There is no right or wrong answer. The real key is remembering and understanding that you have things to be grateful for, right? Regardless of your situation as good. If you are, are living on top of the world, you have even more things. But even in the toughest of times you can find three things to be thankful for. So that's, that's the exercise. That's what we're doing for a week. Keep that in mind. Uh, we also talked about affirmations. We'll do that at the end of the episode. And then yesterday we talked about setting goals. And so today we're going to take that a step further and that's going to be visualizing your goals and the importance of that. Writing it down. It's one thing, right? But visualizing it, seeing it and kind of reminding yourself, "Hey, that is something I am working towards," has a even more powerful effect. And you know, a lot of people believe in vision boards. A lot of people use vision boards. Famously, Lilly Singh has talked about vision boards and used it. She now is a talk show host, a "A Little Late with Lilly, "which is also great. But you know she's used vision boards. Just because you create the board doesn't mean it'll happen. But what it does is it reinforces to you. Hey there's that goal. There is a physical manifestation and reminder of what I'm trying to do. And you know other guys, other people have done it. A past guest on my chasing dreams podcast Lucinda Cross, she did and does vision boards. That was episode 105, the link will be in the description and if you're on Alexa skill just go to aimeej21.com/episode105 And so there is an importance and joy in seeing what you're trying to strive for. Cause what it is is it's an example, it's a concrete thing for you to kind of pursue, chase as I always talk about right? And so vision boards, there's no right way to do it. Some people, what they do is they take magazines and they cut out pictures of things that they want. You know, cars, homes, vacations that they want to go to, pictures of families, you know, these are, these are fine. There's again, no right or wrong answer. The key is to actually do it. And if you don't have magazines that you want to cut up and you know, cause they can be expensive too. But if you, the internet is a wonderful thing. Get it from the internet. Take pictures, take -uh draw, something right? It doesn't have to be fancy. Draw a picture. Some people will have, um, sketches of things and put it on a dry erase board. The key is once you make this vision board, this vision of your future, not just this year, that's the key vision boards. Think, what is it you're trying to do? Where is it you see yourself in the next year, in the next five years, in the next 10 years? What are your goals? These things and goals can range from familial, financial, uh, career, hobbies. You know, dreams and aspirations don't have limits. You don't put limits on yourself, don't do it. Okay. The whole point of a vision board is if there were no limits, which there are not, what do you want to do? Where do you see yourself? There were no limits. So let me, let me share what I have on my vision board. I have a picture of books and those books are a representation of the fact that I want to write a book in the next five years. I have a picture of a plane cause I want to travel. And so the other thing I can add are actual destinations, right? Print a picture of Greece, the, the, um, it's escaping me at the moment, but the landscapes and monuments and beauties of the places you want to be like in Greece and put that on your board. I have a picture or a sketch of a film because I'd like to actually make a movie one day and I have a few thoughts on that. But that's not a, this year thing. It's not. One of my immediate goals is not one that I wrote down, but it's on my vision board because it's something I want to pursue down the road. So what I want you to do, doesn't have to be today, but I want you to think about creating a vision board for yourself. Get a few friends together, have a vision board party if you want, where people bring in supplies, you get a piece of paper, construction paper if you want, and you see everyone creates their own vision board and then don't just put it away. Put that vision board on display. Put it in your room, put it above your bed, put it next to the mirror somewhere you can see and remind yourself that these are for me, this is something I'm going to pursue. The key is that this is not just a dream. You will never happen. This is what you're going to pursue. This is what you're going to chase. These are avenues for you. All right? So I want you to do that. Let me know. Hit me up on the socials at @aimeej21. and let me know how. Show me your vision board if you want. You don't have to. Again, it's for you. But if you want an accountability partner, I'm your hype man. Share it with me. Happy to see it. Happy to talk to you about it. Love to see where you guys are going. It's going to be awesome. It's going to be fantastic guys. So I don't want you to put pressure on yourself. Just do what you can with what you have. Make a vision board for yourself and put it up and see what it can do for you. Okay? So one guy, put that out there for you. Want you to rock, wants you to do the best. Today's a Saturday. What are you guys doing today? Have some fun. All right? And as always, I gotta remind you, you are awesome. You are loved, you are needed, and most importantly, you are enough. Never forget that who you are as you are is enough. Okay? So till tomorrow when we catch up again, keep chasing.

Your vision wants to come to fruition for you just as much as you want to see it for yourself. But a lot of people forget to do the work. You can't just slap a picture up on the board. That's nice, but what are you going to do to get there? What are the steps that you're going to take? And a lot of it has to do with mindset over money. On today’s episode of Happy Black Woman, Rosetta chats with an incredibly inspiring entrepreneur, Lucinda Cross. Lucinda has overcome tremendous odds to achieve a life of success and happiness doing what she loves: sharing a message of hope. Her mission is simple: to help those who are considered the best-kept secrets. Lucinda works with people who are “hidden gems” - people who hold back from sharing their gifts - so they can expose their missions and messages. Her talent for bringing out the best in others is clear and through her story, it’s obvious that her life experience has fed her desire to serve others. Authenticity has no competition. For Lucinda, the key to unlocking the potential of others is to help them overcome the mindset of comparison. She shares insight into her view that, if you are authentic, you have no competition. For Lucinda, it’s all about connecting with your true self, your true mission, and sharing that with the world. She works with clients through workshops, group coaching, speaking engagements, and more to help them understand that you don’t need permission to be who you are. Lucinda shares some tips and strategies that can help you get started on your journey to an authentic life, which includes identifying your gifts and “tooting your own horn”. There’s a fortune in your frustration. Lucinda discusses the years of frustration she felt when she spent time building the dreams of others, while ignoring her own. She shares the value in this frustration and how it served to help her find the courage to say yes to herself and her own dreams. For Lucinda, it was all about building credibility and establishing herself as a thought leader in the industry. She also offers insight into the value of looking at the giants of your industry, rather than your peers. For Lucinda, that meant studying greats like Tony Robbins and Les Brown and aiming to set herself apart from the rest in the same way. The role of a vision board in turning your life around. As Lucinda shares her story, she discusses how she went from saying yes to something she should have said no to, to serving 4 ½ years in a federal prison. It was during this time that she devoted herself to vision boards, which transformed her future and that of fellow inmates. For Lucinda, a vision board kept her hopes high while in prison and paved the way for future successes. Today, she shares her passion for vision boards with the world through workshops and coaching sessions to help women who are ready to bring their vision to life. Refusing to be a public success and a private failure. As she closes out her chat with Rosetta, Lucinda discusses what life looks like today - after working so hard to overcome the many obstacles she’s faced. Happiness didn’t come easy for her, but she fully believes the frustration made her the success she is today. Lucinda shares one of the most important lessons in her life today: realizing she needed help and asking for it. Hiring help, Lucinda says, truly saves the day for her. In closing, she shares her go-to quotes and a book that has inspired her on her journey. When it comes to inspiration and beating the odds, it’s hard to find someone better than Lucinda Cross.
