From the desolate depths of homelessness to the dazzling heights of celebrity training, our guest, Jay Cardiello, has lived a life that is nothing short of extraordinary. An unfortunate injury during his track and field practice left him with a broken spine, propelling him into an abyss of pain and depression. But Jay, with the audacity of hope and resilience, turned his life around, becoming a sought-after coach in sports leagues such as the NFL and Major League Baseball, and then also later worked with some of the biggest names in entertainment such as 50 Cent, JLO, Rami Malek and Sofia Vergara.Jay's story is not just about surmounting adversity; it's a profound exploration of how he found strength, purpose, and faith in the darkest chapters of his life. After enduring the heartbreak of divorce and the struggle of homelessness, Jay discovered solace in his relationship with God and his father's wisdom. His journey stands as a beacon of hope, demonstrating the transformative power of faith, resilience, and determination. Although Jay is TEDx speaker and has authored two best-selling wellness books, perhaps the most interesting part of Jay's story is his experiences with ketamine treatment to make peace with his experiences of sexual abuse. The openness with which he discusses these traumas offers a sense of courage and inspiration to those grappling with similar challenges. Indeed, his story is a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome even the most formidable obstacles. As he shares his greatest achievement, we learn that our past traumas do not define us; instead, they serve as stepping stones, guiding us on our path to becoming the best versions of ourselves.Chapters0:00 Episode Preview0:23 Episode Introduction1:16 From Homeless to Celebrity Trainer4:30 Finding Faith and Overcoming Hardship13:59 Resilience, Legacy, and Personal Growth17:33 Morning Rituals and Overcoming Trauma19:59 Mindset and Personal Growth29:37 Celebrities and Athletes With A Focus on Personal Discipline and Consistency33:57 Leaving a Legacy35:51 Ketamine Use for Mental Health Treatment and Personal Growth38:21 Overcoming Trauma and Finding Inspiration38:57 Ketamine Therapy for Depression and Trauma42:29 Overcoming Adversity and Building Resilience44:42 Recognizing the Wins46:35 Final Words47:50 EpisodeSupport the showVisit our websiteFollow us on InstagramListen on your favorite podcast platform Like this show? He was having a great time jumping on his bed, attempting a back flip, when he missed the bed entirely and suffered a severe concussion. Jim woke up after a long coma but couldn't remember anything. Life was starting all over again and everything had to be relearned. People treated him differently. Some were kind while others treated him as severely handicapped but inside a young Jim felt like he could do anything. The long rehab in the hospital awoke many new thoughts and ideas. He was reintroduced to books in an effort to "catch up" and he worked hard to see what he could accomplish. It was as if he was on a mission. His family was concerned because his enthusiasm was so voracious. They were worried he might hit his head one more time and not make it. He was without fear or limits. Although Jim wanted to live and be accepted, he found much rejection. Everyone he met thought he was never going to amount to anything but Jim dared to be the best he could be. At the age of eleven, this Saskatchewan prairie boy took up skiing. He later joined the Canadian Men's Alpine Ski Team and developed a highly unorthadox style of training out at the farm. In 1969 he earned the nickname “Jungle Jim” with his aggressive style on the slopes and in 1972 at the Olympic Games in Sapporo Japan "Jungle Jim" won a bronze medal in alpine skiing. This was the first World Championship medal in alpine skiing won by a Canadian male skier. In his passion to learn more, he continually studied and wrote in his journal. Jim noticed there were certain things that every person did to be the best version of themselves. These principles were applicable to life and could be applied universally. Jim retired from the Canadian ski team in March of 1977 but armed with his new insights for success, he went on to compete as a professional on the World Pro Ski Tour. "Jungle Jim" won the first ever downhill event held on the tour and led his Pro Team for 4 years. He helped a small sporting goods company with marketing strategies taking the company from middle of the pack performance to number one in every category. Inspired by his new-found success, he presented a way to help sport in Canada and give back 10 times what had been invested into his career. He managed the most successful Olympic Torch Relay in history raising millions of dollars for sport and its sponsors in Canada. He worked as a sport broadcaster from 1978 to 1992, published a book, wrote and directed two films and helped CTV win awards in sport broadcasting. In 1989 Jim embarked on his speaking career and to date has made over 3000 presentations to schools, corporations, and conferences. He's trained athletes in sport and in public speaking, teaching them what to grow and develop in pursuit of their dreams and aspirations. YOU can let people decide what you are capable of or YOU can determine what you are capable of. Apply Jim's principles and be all you can be. Will you take his personal DARE to be you're very best?

In this episode, we continue talking about ‘Personal Discipline and the Art of Doing'. Do you find it difficult to engage or take action on your dreams? Is it hard for you to ‘PULL THE TRIGGER', take the risk, and go after your preferred future? Are you waiting on God to show up and do something for you? Do you find yourself dreaming or planning, only to allow fear to paralyze you from ACT and DO? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this podcast is for you! Scriptural Principle: 17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself. 18 But someone may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” ~ James 2:17-18 Personal Discipline We cannot travel without until we are willing to first travel within. Someone once said, “When we are foolish we want to conquer the world. When we are wise, we want to conquer ourselves”. You see, personal mastery, (and personal responsibility) are paramount to our success. Many times we look outside of ourselves, wanting to place blame and responsibility for our present condition on someone, or something, else. The truth is this. If you could kick the person responsible for MOST of your troubles, you would not be able to sit down for weeks! The truth is that each of us are responsible for WHERE we are today, as well as HOW we got here! Our life TODAY is a result of the choices we have made, and the actions (or inaction) we have taken along the way. What you are going to BE tomorrow, you are becoming today! You WILL BE whatever your choices are directing you to be. We need personal discipline. Personal discipline is SELF-CONTROL. It is the ability to manage or RULE yourself FIRST. Personal discipline or SELF-CONTROL comes from the root word meaning, “to grip” OR “to take hold of”. Aristotle used this word to describe “the ability to test desire by reason…to be resolute and ever in readiness.” He explained that people who are not controlled have strong desires which try to seduce them away from reason, thereby sabotaging their success. The Bible tells us that where there is no VISION, the people are ‘unrestrained'. Where there is no structure or order, there is no discipline. Where there is no discipline, there is no progress. Where there is no measured progress, there will be NO SUCCESS. Where there is no success, there is no joy or fulfillment. The PRICE OF LEADERSHIP demands that we look inward FIRST, and deal with areas of indiscipline. We must know and acknowledge our weaknesses, so that we might address them and convert them to strengths through discipline. Personal discipline begins with personal responsibility. The Art of Doing One of the areas where we struggle with discipline is in the ‘DOING'. You see, we have become a culture of ‘try-ers' and we have not many DOERS. Real transformation takes place when we decide to DO … to take action. Real leadership is not accomplished in possessing good theory, or amassing great knowledge, but rather it is the result of putting one's hand to the plow, and DOING whatever is necessary to get the job done. What has God said about YOU? What has he asked of you? Are you stuck in the mindset of TRYING? To use the word TRY is to give ourselves an OUT, or an excuse to NOT DO. This may sound like a small distinction, but it has huge ramifications. My encouragement to you is this. It's time to quit trying and just do it. Here are three suggestions: (these come from Michael Hyatt's blog post from December 2011 which can be found HERE. 1. Eliminate the word “try” from your vocabulary. It is a worthless word that accomplishes nothing. It only makes you feel better when you fail. 2. Decide either to do or not do. If you don't want to do something fine. Don't do it. But don't pretend that trying is the same as doing. They are two completely different postures. 3. Commit 100 percent to the outcome you want. Like the project manager in Apollo 13 said, “Failure is not an option.” Play full out. Go for the win. Don't settle for merely trying. REMEMBER: “Try not! Do or do not. There is no try! Are there things that you wish you could do? Wish you could get up earlier to be more productive? Wish you could get to the gym more frequently? Wish you could eat better? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you have plenty of room to grow when it comes to self-control and willpower. You need to get uncomfortable and make incremental changes toward your goal. And you need to be consistent! That means every day. And when you make enough incremental changes and create a massive shift from the person you once were, you can become a master or your personal world and nothing can stop you from getting to where you want to go. Every day you should be striving to be slightly better than you were the day before, so when you look back you don’t even recognize who you were before you started. But it’s tough. In this sixth episode of our series on pursuing personal holiness, we discuss the role of personal discipline. We understand and accept the personal responsibility that comes from our desire to get in shape physically. Likewise, we must embrace our responsibility in growing in holiness. This simply means we are accountable for developing our own personal holiness - growing in spiritual maturity - we play a role in conforming ourselves to the image of Christ. We Learn To Be Holy Becoming holy as God is holy (1 Peter 1:16) is something we learn and we train ourselves to become holy by self-discipline (1 Timothy 4:7). This means it is a process, there are ebbs and flows, and we have good days and bad days. Sometimes we are successful and other times we fail. The important aspect is the intention of our heart and the determination of our will. Will we submit our wills to the will of God? The basis for our success in this pursuit is the Word of God, the Bible. Second Timothy 3:16 tells us that God's Word is the tool by which we train ourselves in righteousness, holiness, and godliness. Through the pages of Scripture we are taught to put off the old self and put on the new (Ephesians 4:22-24). We learn through training and we train by means of personal discipline. You Have To Want It God has made it clear that once He has established us in a new position and kingdom by way of grace through faith (Ephesians 2:1-10), we share responsibility for growing in spiritual maturity (Philippians 2:12). In our previous episode, we discussed how holiness is basically an issue of obeying Christ's commands. In fact, James tells us that apart from a demonstration of active obedience, our faith is null and void and will not save us (James 2:14-26). If you desire to be obedient, it becomes a matter of becoming disciplined to be obedient. You train yourself and "work out your salvation" to produce fruit consistent with repentance and salvation. ___________________________ Previous Episodes In This Series Pursuit of Lifetime God's Holiness Personal Holiness Is Not Optional Three Things To Remember Personal Holiness Equals Obedience

We all have routines of eating, sleeping, work and leisure, yet many Christians neglect personal discipline in their spiritual lives. Godly habits become the means that God uses to work His grace in our lives.24 November 1997

Do you have a question for Pastor Josh about leadership, ministry, or any other topic we've covered on the podcast so far? Submit your questions to info@joshuagagnon.com or @joshgagnon on Twitter and Pastor Josh might answer it on a future episode! Today we have a conversation with Pastor Léonce Crump, author, international speaker, Lead Pastor of Renovation Church, and one of our speakers at Activate Conference this year. Takeaways from this episode… You can't go forward looking backwards. You can't go in a certain direction just by looking at where NOT to go. Most people want their leaders to be better versions of what they want to be. Transculturalism the realization of the hope of the gospel. God always has a people covenanted to Him and to one another. The gospel is supposed to be a message that transverses cultural differences and idiosyncrasies. We are able to form something much more beautiful together than we are apart. The sum of the whole is more beautiful than the individual parts. You need to have a clear vision, strategy, and set of values of where you are going in any leadership position. Knowing who you are is a discipline. Lean into the way that you are made. It's not always that we don't have time, it's that we don't always manage our time appropriately. Urgent is not the same as important. The personal discipline of faith and a good conscience is like holding up a shield in battle.
Mike tackles the number one struggle in the survey, lack of personal discipline and highlights the difference between the popular notion of self-discipline and the Bible's teaching concerning this issue.
In this episode we welcome threatmanagementcenter.com founder Dale Brown. Dale C. Brown is the founder of The Detroit Threat Management Center located in Detroit. Commander Brown created Eclectikan survival tactical training systems in 1993.This training system is comprised of tactical psychology, tactical law and tactical skills, to teach communities and corporations how to properly manage human threats and create non-violent outcomes. In 1995, on the eastside of Detroit, Commander Brown officially formed the V.I.P.E.R.S. (Violence Intervention Protective Emergency Response System). A bodyguard tactical training program that emphasizes the importance of mission motivated altruistic community service. The organization became known for helping the community, by stopping home invasions and murders that had been a problem for many years prior. This resulted in a good quality of life for the residents who lived in the community. The byproduct of which meant that the building owners went into the black for the first time in twenty years and the police department received accolades for a 90% reduction in violent crime and 911 calls. In 1997, the Survival Scouts Program was created to teach youth urban survival skills and proper work ethic. Youths, ages 4 to 17, were taught Basic Self-Defense, Gunfire Evasion, Basic First Aid, Conflict Avoidance, Personal Discipline, Threat Awareness, and Problem Solving. In 1998, Commander Brown stopped hijackings of delivery trucks for a $250 million dollar company operating in Detroit. This company experienced injured workers and substantial financial losses despite federal, state and local law enforcement efforts to stop these crimes. As a direct result of Dale C. Brown’s V.I.P.E.R.S. strategic tactical system, this company is now a 300 million dollar company and remains a current client. In 2005 Commander Brown’s V.I.P.E.R.S. Program mounted a volunteer rescue mission during the first weekend of the storm to assist families who were Hurricane Katrina victims. The Threat Management Center C.E.R.T. Unit worked with law enforcement in New Orleans and deployed with U.S. Army Airborne assigned to the U.S. Navy Destroyer Tortuga. The rescue operations were conducted throughout the flooded New Orleans area. This same year, the Oakland County Prosecutors office awarded Dale Brown and the Detroit Treat Management Center an award for helping stalking victims. In 2006, Dale C. Brown opened The Threat Management Center located in Detroit and began offering classes to the public as well as law enforcement officers for free. This same year, The Detroit Threat Management Center began its maritime nautical rescues assisting private boat owners in distress in the waterways bordering the U.S and Canada. In 2007, Channel 2 Fox News interviewed and reported about the community service that Dale and the Detroit Threat Management Center provides stalking victims and domestic abuse victims. The Detroit Threat Management Center has been featured on both Fox 2 News and Channel 4 Detroit News, as recently as March 2011. In 2011, The Detroit Threat Management Center was featured in the Detroit Institute of Arts for promoting non-violent positive outcomes and helping ordinary Detroit citizens empower themselves against violent predators. This same year, The Detroit Threat Management Center was featured on Fox 2 News for reuniting a 2 year old child with her mother. The child was taken from Arizona and brought to Detroit against the mothers will. The Detroit Threat Management Center reunited the 2 year old child with her mother without any violence. The Detroit Threat Management Center has been assisting the local domestic violence shelters in reuniting the children with their parents, as recently as November 2013. In 2012, The Detroit Threat Management Center teamed up with the Detroit Branch of the NAACP for an important and potentially lifesaving training session for youths that was borne out of the Trayvon Martin tragedy. As part of its Fight for Freedom weekend event program, the NAACP conducted “Cops & Stops,” a two-hour interactive session at Cobo Center that aimed to prevent deadly street encounters like the one that took Martin's life after a street encounter with David Zimmerman, who has since been acquitted of murder charges. The purpose of the scenarios was to demonstrate the right and wrong ways to interact with law enforcement officials, neighborhood watch members or overzealous armed citizens. This same year, Commander Dale Brown and The Detroit Threat Management Center on February 28th received an award from Kenneth Cockrel and The Detroit City Council for providing community service, protecting and sheltering of the domestic violence victims in the city of Detroit and Wayne County. In 2013, Commander Brown and The Threat Management Center received certification from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) in Weapons of Mass Destruction Tactical Operations. Since 2004 Commander Brown and The Threat Management Center V.I.P.E.R.S. Program have been assisting the Detroit Police department and FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) in active shooter and anti-terrorism training. The Threat Management Center has successfully developed tactics, strategies, and logistics to deter, detect and defend corporations and communities from both internal and external sources of violence using primarily non-violent methods. The success of this community-based organization has evolved to include high level corporate facilitation. Corporations discovered the success and discipline of the personnel within the organization and have retained the Threat Management Center for training workshops and referral of protective service professionals. The Threat Management Center’s history of success has led to high profile protective assignments.
