Recorded on 26 October 2023 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr Gordon Macdonald. Euthanasia and assisted suicide are increasingly being legalised in Western nations. This talk will look at the impact of this prioritisation of autonomy and choice within healthcare, at vulnerable people being placed at risk as a result and how the number of deaths quickly escalates once the law has been changed. Dr Gordon Macdonald is the Chief Executive of Care Not Killing, a post he has held since April 2019. Prior to that Gordon worked in political advocacy work focusing on the Scottish Parliament. In that role, he chaired the Care Not Killing Scotland committee which led the campaign against two previous Bills which sought to legalise euthanasia and assisted suicide at Holyrood. He has a PhD in political economy and has been active in politics in a personal capacity for a number of years. Care Not Killing was set up in 2006 as a political campaign by a number of organisations which were concerned by Lord Joffe's attempt to change the law to legalise assisted suicide through his Assisted Dying for the Terminally Ill Bill and to campaign for improvements in palliative care. Gordon has overseen the development of the organisation, including the establishment of the Our Duty of Care campaign, a campaign for health professionals who wish to oppose the legalisation of assisted suicide and euthanasia. To listen live to future ICMDA webinars, visit https://icmda.net/resources/webinars/

Kingsway Christian Church Sermons - Audio

Sermon Notes Luke 6:46 NIV Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say? Luke 6:49 NIV But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete. When was the last time you heard from God and did what He said? Luke 5:33 NIV (The Pharisees and their sect) said to him, "John's disciples often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking." Luke 5:34 NIV Jesus answered, "Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while he is with them?" Luke 5:35 NIV "But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast." Fasting is where we deprive ourselves of something we need in order to chase something we need even more. Prayer is the ongoing conversation with God our Father where we both talk and listen for The Holy Spirit's leading in our lives. Luke 5:36 NIV He told them this parable: "No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old." Luke 5:37 NIV "And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined." Luke 5:38-39 NIV "No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, 'The old is better.'" Jesus is letting them know the final and official interpretation of God's law is here, and His name is Jesus. Luke 6:1 NIV One Sabbath, Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels. Luke 6:2 NIV Some of the Pharisees asked, "Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?" Luke 6:3-4 NIV Jesus answered them, "Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions." Luke 6:5 NIV Then Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." Luke 6:6 NIV On another Sabbath, he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. Luke 6:7 NIV The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. Luke 6:8 NIV But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Get up and stand in front of everyone." So he got up and stood there. Luke 6:9 NIV Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?" Luke 6:10 NIV He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He did so, and his hand was completely restored. The original purpose of the Sabbath was to heal and restore the human body and mind. Luke 6:11 NIV But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus. "There must be a quiet place where all is in order, a place from which comes the energy that overcomes turbulence and is not intimidated by it." – Gordon MacDonald, Ordering Your Private World Which of your circles is overdeveloped, and which are underdeveloped? What is getting squeezed because of that? What is God calling you to do about it?

Jonathan Reynolds, CEO of Titus Talent Strategies, has generosity as one of his personal core values.  This means generosity in giving back to the community and to his team members. He knows enabling his people to have a positive impact on others creates a feeling of connectedness that motivates them to grow. Jonathan has spent most of his career setting ambitious goals and pushing on the gas pedal until he reaches them. That ‘no-brakes' approach, however, comes at a price, and one he's starting to realize is far too high. In this episode, Jonathan reflects on the importance of leaders investing in their own inner world. Episode Summary. In this final episode of our series, Don't Waste Your Life. Rule It for God, we will examine a very common feeling among Christian men—that their secular work, itself, is a necessary evil, but only of secondary importance in our mission to spread Christ's kingdom of righteousness over earth. Is that true? This episode seeks to apply a biblical worldview of work and rest to our understanding of our mission.  For Further Prayerful Thought. In your own words, how would you summarize the biblical view of secular work? How is a high view of creation connected to a high view of work? How would you answer the objection that the 4th commandment isn't relevant for Christians? How would you explain to another that instead of a legalistic prohibition, the fourth commandment is an invitation to weekly renewal? How is the way that God rested a pattern for us to follow? How can Gordon MacDonald's three principles of genuine rest, 1) looking backward, 2) sharpen our present truth perspective, and 3) looking forward to the upcoming mission for the week be a helpful pattern to you? Resources Used In the PodcastEvery Good Endeavor, Tim KellerHow Then Should We Work, Hugh WhelchelFor the printed version of this message click here. For a summary of topics addressed by podcast series, click here. For FREE downloadable studies on men's issues click here.To make an online contribution to enable others to hear about the podcast: (Click link and scroll down to bottom left

Episode Summary: In this episode of the L3 Leadership Podcast, you'll hear Gordon MacDonald, pastor and best-selling author, share leadership advice for every decade of your life, the importance of rest, and more!About Gordon: Gordon MacDonald has been a pastor and author for over forty years. For many years he pastored Grace Chapel in Lexington, Massachusetts, and continues to serve as Pastor Emeritus. He has also provided leadership to influential ministries such as Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, which he served as President for three years, and World Relief, which he currently serves as Chairman. Gordon's best-selling books include Ordering Your Private World, Mid-Course Correction, and, most recently, A Resilient Life. He also writes and serves as Editor-at-Large for Christianity Today's Leadership Journal. When not writing, leading, or speaking at conferences, Gordon and his wife Gail can be found hiking the trails of New England.6 Key Takeaways:1. Ambition in leadership can be positive,  but it does have a spectrum that must be kept in check. It's good to want to make a difference, but “Drivenness must be consecrated daily”.2. “Business brings emptiness. I always keep a sabbath.” There are no two sabbaths that are the same. It's all about getting true rest and being renewed. If you can't get everything done in 6 days, then you're either doing too much or are doing it wrong. 3. About every seven years, your dreams will get tested. This is either because you fail, or someone fails you.4. Right now at 81, I am most interested in raising up younger pastors and being a spiritual father to those who will go after me. 5. For those who are looking for a spiritual father or a mentor, my advice is to start “dating”. Date your potential mentor, take them to coffee, ask them questions, see how you click and whether or not you hit it off. Don't just ask someone to be your mentor. Take it slow and take time to develop a real relationship first. 6. Failure always generates humility. Always take full responsibility for your mistakes. Think about what you can learn from them and what you can teach others from them. Never cover up your mistakes.Quotes from the Episode:“Drivenness must be consecrated daily.”“Busyness brings emptiness. I always keep a sabbath.”“Failure always generates humility.”"Never ever waste a crisis. A crisis always produces new answers, new insights, and new people.”“The practice is painful so that the game is pleasurable.”Resources Mentioned:Ordering Your Private World, by Gordon MacDonaldIf you want to 10x your growth next year, I want to challenge you to launch or join an L3 Mastermind Group. Climate Change 1980-2018   Two tigers talking and one is saying, "You can tell humans apart by their fingerprints.  They are as unique as our stripes."  I've been cleaning up and organizing all of my folders and over the year have saved some screenshots that I label “Ideas”.  They are mostly quotes to overlay on beautiful cat images for social sites, so I've created a few, but today had that bizarre stripe / finger print idea come out of nowhere.  I sent it to LaWanna to see if Cindy Arthur, or one of our artists could illustrate that.   Howie is feeling better and decided he's now ready to remake the cartoon I had done to promote our federal bill to ban cub petting.  His edits are great, but now it means pretty much starting from scratch with the cartoonist.  I'm going to give it another day or so, because he will want to change things a few times and no sense paying for work that is just going to have to be redone.  Jamie and Victor went fossilizing for something new yesterday.  It's an old mine where they hit a pocket of fossilized clams.  Jamie says the animal part of the clams turns to crystals and that's what she's digging.  I have crystals in my pockets and on my desks as a reminder that we are all made of light.   I'm continuing to read the NYT piece on climate change.  I found this interesting and wondered if Jamie hopped back onto the planet in 1980 to be a part of the change that was needed to save the earth?     On April 3, 1980, Senator Paul Tsongas, a Massachusetts Democrat, held the first congressional hearing on carbon-dioxide buildup in the atmosphere. Gordon MacDonald testified that the United States should “take the initiative” and develop, through the United Nations, a way to coordinate every nation's energy policies to address the problem. That June, Jimmy Carter signed the Energy Security Act of 1980, which directed the National Academy of Sciences to start a multiyear, comprehensive study, to be called “Changing Climate,” that would analyze social and economic effects of climate change. More urgent, the National Commission on Air Quality, at the request of Congress, invited two dozen experts, including Henry Shaw himself, to a meeting in Florida to propose climate policy.     Two days before Halloween in 1980 Rafe Pomerance traveled to a cotton-candy castle on the Gulf of Mexico, near St. Petersburg, Fla, that locals called the Pink Palace. The Don CeSar hotel was a child's daydream with cantilevered planes of bubble-gum stucco and vanilla-white cupolas that appeared to melt in the sunshine like scoops of ice cream. The hotel stood amid blooms of poisonwood and gumbo limbo on a narrow spit of porous limestone that rose no higher than five feet above the sea. In its carnival of historical amnesia and childlike faith in the power of fantasy, the Pink Palace was a fine setting for the first rehearsal of a conversation that would be earnestly restaged, with little variation and increasing desperation, for the next 40 years.   2015-2018:  The Paris Agreement is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), dealing with greenhouse-gas-emissions mitigation, adaptation, and finance, starting in the year 2020. The agreement's language was negotiated by representatives of 196 state parties at the 21st Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC in Le Bourget, near Paris, France, and adopted by consensus on 12 December 2015. As of November 2018, 195 UNFCCC members have signed the agreement, and 184 have become party to it. The Paris Agreement's long-term goal is to keep the increase in global average temperature to well below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels; and to limit the increase to 1.5 °C, since this would substantially reduce the risks and effects of climate change.   Under the Paris Agreement, each country must determine, plan, and regularly report on the contribution that it undertakes to mitigate global warming. No mechanism forces a country to set a specific target by a specific date, but each target should go beyond previously set targets. In June 2017, U.S. President Donald Trump announced his intention to withdraw his country from the agreement. Under the agreement, the earliest effective date of withdrawal for the U.S. is November 2020, shortly before the end of President Trump's current term. In practice, changes in United States policy that are contrary to the Paris Agreement have already been put in place.   In July 2017 French Environment Minister Nicolas Hulot announced a plan to ban all petrol and diesel vehicles in France by 2040 as part of the Paris Agreement. Hulot also stated that France would no longer use coal to produce electricity after 2022 and that up to 4 billion will be invested in boosting energy efficiency. To reach the agreement's emission targets, Norway will ban the sale of petrol- and diesel-powered cars by 2025; the Netherlands will do the same by 2030. Electric trains running on the Dutch national rail network are already entirely powered by wind energy. The House of Representatives of the Netherlands passed a bill in June 2018 mandating that by 2050 the Netherlands will cut its 1990 greenhouse-gas emissions level by 95%—exceeding the Paris Agreement goals.  What will we do?

What's So Amazing about Grace, Zondervan, 1997, p. 15.

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+11%3A28-30&version=NRSVACE (Matthew 11:28-30) A photographer was snapping pictures of first graders at an elementary school, and he was making small talk to put his little subjects at ease. “What are you going to be when you grow up?” he asked one little girl. “Tired,” she said. A lot of tiredness is going around these days. We live in a fast-moving world with lots of pressures, deadlines, problems, and tough circumstances that put us under a lot of stress and can make a person feel very tired. A certain fatigue sets in, a physical fatigue, emotional fatigue, and even spiritual fatigue. It makes our lives feel very flat. I came across a wonderful analogy written by Mike Penninga comparing life to a flat bike tire. On a recent bike trip it wasn't until I finally arrived home that I noticed something wrong. My tires were low. They needed air. The funny thing about bike tires is I don't remember taking air out of them. It just went. Somewhere. Somehow. Air leaks. My tires weren't crazy low, but low enough to know that my efforts in peddling were not producing maximum return. Each rotation was just a little bit harder than it would be had the tires been properly filled. It got me thinking. Life is like a bike tire. We don't intentionally take air out … it just leaves. And just as it's harder to peddle with flat tires, it's not as fun to live when the air has leaked out of our lives. We don't know where it goes or how. Life just has a way of deflating us. Difficult conversations . . . hisssssss (that's the sound of air leaving your tires!). Tough day at work . . . hisssssss. Overwhelmed by circumstance . . . hisssssss. It happens to all of us. What about you? Are you going through life with flat tires? How fun is that? It is to the people who are feeling like flat tires that a sweet invitation comes today. Come to me all who weary and are carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. These are the words of Jesus. He has just told His listeners that He and the Father are one. To know Him is to be connected to God. Now He claims to be the Lord of rest. He's the rest giver. “Come to me all who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest.” It turns out He is not talking about offering a nap for the body, some advice for the scrambled mind, a breathing exercise, stretching to relax your body, a vacation, how to slow down, or leisure activities. No, He is talking about a deeper sort of rest when He says this. He is talking about rest for the soul. “You will find rest for your soul.” That statement begs the question, What exactly is the soul? How would you answer the question? We know of soul music. Aretha Franklin was the Queen of Soul. I love eating soul food. We talked about the danger of selling your soul. When I was a kid, I was taught, “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep.” Sports franchises talk of a certain player being the soul of the team. The eyes are described as the windows of the soul. So what exactly is the soul? Dallas Willard, a Christian writer, compares the soul to a stream that needs to be tended. Gordon MacDonald talks about it as an inner garden that needs to be carefully kept. It's the inner part of you, the life center of human beings. So we hear the soul being addressed – in the book of Psalms for instance. “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name” (13:1). All that is within me – that's what the soul is. We all have one. • It is the deepest part of you. It integrates your will, your mind, and your body. • It is the most important part of you. It needs continual care in order for you to thrive. • It, perhaps, is the easiest part of you to neglect. We work so hard on our external existence and don't take much time thinking about the soul. That's not good because it is the most needy part of you. Totally dependent! It has deep desires that long to...
