Have you ever met someone who's physically present but spiritually checked out? They're alive, but barely. Their ambition is gone, their drive is dead, and they're content doing nothing—just folding their hands while life passes them by. The Bible has a word for this: foolishness. Welcome to The Daily, where we engage with God's Word—verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every single day. Our text today is Ecclesiastes 4:5-6. The fool folds his hands and eats his own flesh. Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind. — Ecclesiastes 4:5-6 Some live in a state of constant motion, striving endlessly for success but never satisfied. Others, however, take the opposite approach—they fold their arms, refusing to engage, and slowly waste away. Solomon calls this man a fool. He is not just lazy; he is self-destructive. He chooses apathy over action, comfort over calling, and in doing so, he devours himself—his potential, his opportunities, his very life. Some people live in a state of constant motion, striving endlessly for success but never satisfied. Others take the opposite approach—they fold their arms, refusing to engage, and slowly waste away. Solomon calls this person a fool. They're not just lazy; they're self-destructive. They choose apathy over action, comfort over calling, and in doing so, they devour themselves—their potential, opportunities, and purpose. Work is not the enemy. Endless toil without purpose is meaningless, but refusing to engage in the work God has given is equally dangerous. The fool justifies inaction, blaming circumstances, others, or even God for a lack of progress. But the real issue isn't external; it's internal. Passivity consumes from the inside out. Solomon offers a better way: “a handful of quietness.” This isn't laziness—it's contentment. It's the balance between diligent work and resting in God's provision. It's the person who labors faithfully without being defined by their work, who leads, builds, serves, and knows when to release control and trust God. Are you folding your hands when you should be working? Are you waiting for life to happen instead of stepping into God's calling? Don't let apathy consume you. Engage. Build. Lead. Serve. Where in your life have you been passive when God has called you to act? Share your thoughts in the comments and take one step today toward active obedience. #ActiveFaith, #SpiritualWakeUp, #EcclesiastesWisdom ASK THIS: Where have I justified inaction in my life? How has passivity affected my spiritual growth? What does “a handful of quietness” look like for me? How can I balance diligent work with resting in God? DO THIS: Identify one area where you've been passive and take a small, intentional step toward active obedience today. PRAY THIS: Lord, reveal where I've been passive and stir my heart to act. Help me find contentment in You as I work faithfully. Amen. PLAY THIS: Satisfied.

The active obedience of Christ is a vital biblical doctrine that helps sinners see Jesus better. Many know Jesus to be the one who atoned for sin, securing forgiveness for those who trust in Him. This is both wonderful and crucial. But being forgiven is not enough. God requires perfect obedience for eternal life. Even Jesus says so. Thankfully, God not only requires perfect obedience but also graciously provides through His Son. In addition to atonement, Jesus positively fulfilled the divine requirement by His perfect obedience. In other words, Jesus removes guilt for wrongdoing, and Jesus provides perfect righteousness by His obedience to the divine law. In The Active Obedience of Christ, readers are directed to Jesus—the one who is better than many may have ever realized! In this episode Phil Cecil talks with Dr Mark Snoeberger and Dr Ryan Meyer about the Active Obedience of Christ. Some today hold that such a doctrine is unbiblical. They might even say that true Dispensationalists cannot be for the Active Obedience of Christ as imputed righteousness to the redeemed. We dicuss this and more.

This sermon was originally presented on June 7, 2015 Scripture Reading: Matthew 3:1-3, 13-17 One of the wonders of the work of Christ is His sufficiency to secure for us our eternal salvation. Jesus did everything necessary to "bring us to God" (1 Pet 3:18). When God justifies someone, two wondrous things happen. Something is taken away and something is given. In justification the penalty for sin is taken away and the righteousness of Christ is granted to us. Both are necessary for our being God's children forever. Theologians sometimes distinguish between two aspects of Christ's work on our behalf, calling them the "active" obedience of Christ and the "passive" obedience of Christ. Certainly Jesus was active in every aspect of His life, including His death, but by "active" is meant Jesus' perfect obedience to God's law. He did this on our behalf. By "passive" is meant the sufferings that Jesus bore on our behalf. The death of Christ is sufficient to cover all our sins as the climax of a sinless life. Jesus not only absorbed the wrath of God in our place on the cross, He also perfectly kept God's law in our place. His righteous obedience is reckoned to us. In a word, Jesus paid the law's penalty in our place and He obeyed the law's commands in our place. The passive obedience of Christ rescues us from hell and the active obedience gains for us heaven. Jesus exhorted John to baptize Him because it was necessary for Him "to fulfill all righteousness" (Matt 3:15). What a wonder to stand at God's great judgment, as we all must, and not be condemned because Christ's own obedience has been credited to our account!

Shortly before dawn on a cold North Dakota morning, a telegram was sent to John Murray, professor of systematic theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. “I'm so thankful for the active obedience of Christ,” it read, “no hope without it.” Not long after composing this telegram, J. Gresham Machen died after a short battle with pneumonia and entered the eternal rest of his savior, who had redeemed his sins and given him peace with God. Not long before he left for North Dakota, Machen wrote and recorded the message you're about to listen to. It's these thoughts—of the incomprehensible act of salvation--which occupied him as he considered the prospect of meeting his Savior face to face. Music Licensing Codes: XREZU8QW9IIZ0HQA
As Jesus is baptized by John in the Jordan, God is well-pleased with his Son, who has imputed his perfect righteousness to us. Most Christians know about the forgiveness of sins, but not the doctrine of active obedience. But how do we become righteous if not through imputation? In this episode of White Horse Inn, hosts Michael Horton, Justin Holcomb, Bob Hiller, and Walter Strickland explain what is meant by the active obedience of Christ and why there's no hope without it.

Catechism Class: LD21C Q56 The Forgiveness of SinsIn this lesson, we move on to a doctrine that is core to the Christian Faith - the forgiveness of sins. Our works, even our most righteous works, are as polluted as filthy rags in the sight of God, and deserve only eternal condemnation. Everything we do is sinful, because we are sinners, and those sins cannot be overlooked by God. But they can be forgiven, through God's grace alone. So, our catechist asks us, “What do you believe concerning the forgiveness of sins?” The answer we must give is: I believe that God, because of Christ's satisfaction, will no more remember my sins, nor my sinful nature, against which I have to struggle all my life, but will graciously grant me the righteousness of Christ, that I may never come into condemnation. In this episode we look at how God's perfect justice is fully SATISFIED by Christ's atoning work, and we deal with the fact that even though we are forgiven we continue to sin, talk about the MORTIFICATION OF SIN, and we learn about Christ's ACTIVE OBEDIENCE, - His perfect, sinless life, which has been imputed to us at the cross. Finally we note that for those whose sins are forgiven, there is NO CONDEMNATION.Read the NOTES HERE. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
