Tom Sutcliffe and guests discuss how we solve problems and imagine the future. While many people now point to the potential of AI, the prize winning writer Naomi Alderman is interested in the messy magic of human thinking. In the forthcoming BBC Radio 4 series, Human Intelligence she tells the stories of the people – with all their ingenuity and foibles – who built the modern world.Across history human cultures have devised a wide range of practices to understand, and discover, the mysteries of the past, present and future. The exhibition Oracles, Omens and Answers (at the Bodleian Library, Oxford, until April 2025), co-curated by Dr Michelle Aroney showcases the art of divination. From the use of cards, beads and spiders, to studying the stars, weather and palm lines people have sought ways to clarify and predict the world around them. Human imagination is not just the tool of fiction writers, but something that's vital to navigate the world; to reminisce, anticipate and plan for the future. But how does it work? The neurologist Adam Zeman explores the very latest scientific studies in the world of the imagination, in his new book, The Shape of Things Unseen.Producer: Katy Hickman

Hope in Things UnseenHebrews 11:1-3 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible. (Heb. 11:1-3 NRSV)This is a powerful reflection on faith, “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” This passage reminds us that hope is not confined to what is immediately visible or achievable. Instead, it invites us into a deeper trust—believing for justice, peace, and love, even when those things seem far away.Advent is a season that invites us to live into this unseen hope in a time when much feels broken. In the constant awareness of injustice and suffering, we are reminded that the work of the Divine continues beyond our perception. Hope can become a lens through which we see the world not just as it is but as it could be.This trust in God's unseen work challenges us to move forward, especially when the path is unclear. We don't have to wait passively for change. We can act as though the future we hope for is already unfolding, waiting for a helpful tug. Advent invites us to trust in the fabric of justice woven by many, knowing the beauty of the design is far greater than one of us can imagine. Our role is to be weavers of that unseen hope, making space for God's promises to flourish in our lives and in the world around us. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Liz Adekunle is a Church of England priest - yet she dreads Christmas. For her it's often been a stressful and difficult time, and there have been years when she's had no one to spend Christmas day with. Liz is not alone. Research has shown that nearly half of us have similar feelings, often because of the expense or pressure to spend Christmas time with family you may not get on with. So how, Liz asks, can those who do dread the season make Christmas better – for themselves and those around them, whether or not they are Christian? So, in this edition of Things Unseen, she gathers together some people who can help uncover a more spiritual – and more relaxed and meaningful - side to Christmas. Christian Comedian Paul Kerensa delves into how you can make new traditions to make it special for you, while Salvation Army officer, Jo Moir, explains how to her Christmas is about helping those who struggle the most. And Catholic nun Sister Gemma Simmonds advises on finding the still points in the season, even if you're celebrating alone.

The retaliation by Israel in Gaza following the Hamas attack in October, has caused deep-seated anger among Muslim communities, including in the UK. As the Islamic holy month of Ramadan approaches, with its focus on compassion, charity, and prayer, how are Muslims preparing, given the strong emotions triggered by the Israel-Gaza situation? Gaza will not be far from people's minds as they get together to break the fast in the evenings, and much of the community's charitable giving this year will go to help the Palestinians. In this Ramadan edition of Things Unseen, broadcaster Amir Suleman meets Muslims of different ages to ask how they can find compassion, even for people they might regard as enemies. Joining the conversation are social psychologist Anita Nayyar, community worker Faisal Mahmood and university student Abdul-Roqueeb Salman.

On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast, Hank brings up a question that is asked often in our culture, “If we can't see God, how can we know that He really exists?” It's not uncommon for skeptics to suppose that Christians are irrational to believe in a God they cannot see. In reality, however, it is irrational for skeptics to suppose that what cannot be seen does not exist. Christians and skeptics alike recognize black holes, electrons, laws of logic, and gravity even though all of these are unseen. As Paul wrote in his epistle to the Romans, “For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse” (Romans 1:20 NIV). The order and the complexity of the universe testify to the existence of an uncaused first cause—God.Hank also answers the following questions:What is the biblical doctrine of heaven and the Millennium? Shortly before dawn on a cold North Dakota morning, a telegram was sent to John Murray, professor of systematic theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. “I'm so thankful for the active obedience of Christ,” it read, “no hope without it.” Not long after composing this telegram, J. Gresham Machen died after a short battle with pneumonia and entered the eternal rest of his savior, who had redeemed his sins and given him peace with God. Not long before he left for North Dakota, Machen wrote and recorded the message you're about to listen to. It's these thoughts—of the incomprehensible act of salvation--which occupied him as he considered the prospect of meeting his Savior face to face. Music Licensing Codes: XREZU8QW9IIZ0HQA

Anna Björg Þórarinsdóttir is the manager of The Museum of Icelandic Sorcery & Witchcraft in The Westfjords region of Iceland.  We begin on the country's origins as a Viking settlement, followed by life in the traditional turf houses. From there we learn that belief in elves is still relevant today and how spirits in the land have shaped not only Icelandic legends, but the ethos. We hear of a nearby farm built over a heathen temple where an ominous Viking-era stone was discovered. In story form, Anna tells the rich history of the island's 16th-to-17th-century sorcerers: the religious temperament of the time, their persecution, and her own ancestral involvement. This opens up further synchronicities around her position at the museum & growing up in a New Age household. For the remaining time, it's an all out deluge of folklore and magic: spirit guides called Fylgja, hunting & farming folk magic, The Helm of Awe, the Yule Lads, a pair of human skin pants, and finally, a grotesque milk-stealing wool-worm known as the Tilberi! In the previous episode, we talked about how we can know and have confidence that God exists. But the difference between knowing that God exists, and enjoying a relationship with God is a vast distance. Just believing in God doesn't explain why he seems so far away. The answer to that dilemma isn't a popular one these days. When we talk about sin a lot of modern preconceptions come to mind. Ideas about guilt and shame, judgment and brokenness. But none of these terms really captures what the Bible says about sin, the power that separates us from God. It's that biblical definition of sin that J. Gresham Machen sets out to explain in this broadcast, and this isn't just an exercise in academic theology. Although it can be uncomfortable to dig deeper into the darkness of our hearts, there's hope. As we learn more about what sin is, we can begin to understand the real meaning of the sacrifice that Jesus made for us on the cross. As we begin to wrap up our week on living for heaven, today we're going to explore what it means to have our perspectives shift toward the things of God rather than the things of earth. We are so easily bogged down by the weight of the world, and today God wants to lift our chin and point our eyes upward to things unseen, the things of heaven. Our Scripture for today comes from 2 Corinthians 4:18, and today's worship is Throne Room by Jesus Culture.   -- Jesus' invitation in Matthew 11 to find real rest is for YOU.    First15's brand-new devotional book called Rhythms was written with you in mind.    Each day of this 28-day devotional invites you to break away from your normal rhythm of waking, eating, working, and sleeping to discover a spiritual rhythm that, when practiced, will lead you into a more vibrant, abundant life in every way that matters.   Jesus wasn't kidding when he said you can find rest in the midst of the craziness of life. He can give it to you, and Rhythms will guide you in that direction.   We'd love to send you a copy to say thanks for your donation of $27 or more today.   So please request your copy today at supportfirst15.org — and thank you for your donation to help create more content that helps more people connect with God each day!

How can you know that God is real? This question has always been difficult, but in 1935, when J. Gresham Machen broadcasted the first of these little talks, the ground had shifted. Cultural Christianity was giving way to new ideas about truth and the universe. Darwinian evolution was becoming entrenched in the public school system, and it had even become fashionable to openly question the existence of God. In the best of times, it isn't easy to find a place to start to give answers proving the existence of God, but that doesn't mean there aren't answers. It just takes careful, patient explanation. And that's just the challenge J. Gresham Machen takes up from the beginning of his talks in Things Unseen, giving a clear, succinct and easy to understand case for a God who not only exists, but actually tells us he exists a lot!
