In a powerful callout, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slammed Congress and the White House over insider trading. Elected officials shouldn't hold stocks—period. While Martha Stewart went to prison for it, members of Congress routinely outperform the market, raising red flags of insider trading. Donald Trump, for example, told people to buy stocks just before pausing tariffs, triggering a historic $304 billion windfall for billionaires, according to Bloomberg. How many people did Trump tell in private before hitting send on that social media post? Because that would be insider trading. Corruption flows freely in America—like cheap wine at Mar-a-Lago. Now, MAGA Republicans are pushing the SAVE Act, requiring proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections. It's voter suppression dressed up as security. Noncitizen voting is extremely rare, but this bill could disenfranchise millions—including women who changed their names for marriage and trans Americans. It's essentially a poll tax, nationalizing Jim Crow. Democrats could stop it in the Senate—unless a handful cave. Four House Democrats already backed it. If passed, this could become the next Citizens United, further empowering oligarchs like Elon Musk and paving Trump's path to authoritarian rule. What can you do? Show up. Protest. Call your senators, especially those who caved on the budget battle. Demand accountability. And yes, let's talk about AOC primarying Chuck Schumer or Kirsten Gillibrand—New York, an the nation, deserves better. Adrian has been on the frontlines fighting for democracy both at home and abroad. He has worked alongside civil rights legend Bayard Rustin and the AFL-CIO, the largest federation of unions in America. He also supported Poland's Solidarity movement, which helped bring down the Iron Curtain, and played a key role, along with iconic Soviet dissident, writer, and Czech statesman Václav Havel, in preserving Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in the 1990s, when many thought the Cold War had ended. About the Guest(s):Amy IrvineAmy Irvine is the CEO and founder of the Rooted Planning Group, a financial planning firm dedicated to helping individuals and families cultivate a thriving financial future. With extensive experience in the finance industry, Amy is a respected voice in personal finance, often highlighted for her unique insights and practical advice aimed at improving financial literacy. As a passionate advocate for financial equality, she frequently contributes to discussions on contemporary financial issues, especially those impacting women.Episode Summary:In this insightful episode of Money Roots, host Amy Irvine delves deep into the intertwined history of women and money, while also exploring foundational concepts of the money supply. Released during Women's History Month, this episode provides a timely reflection on how historical gender biases have shaped financial opportunities and challenges for women over centuries. From elucidating the definitions of M1, M2, and M3 money supplies to detailing landmark legislative changes that aimed to rectify gender-based financial inequalities, Amy delivers a wealth of information meant to empower and educate listeners.Throughout the episode, Amy Irvine sheds light on the significant historical milestones that have shaped women's financial rights and opportunities. With a nod to landmark legislation such as the Married Women's Property Act and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, listeners are guided through two centuries of evolution in women's financial rights. Highlighting the persistent wage gap, which has seen stagnant improvement since 2003, Amy calls for continued education and advocacy, emphasizing the role of allies in supporting financial gender equality. By understanding the past, Amy believes, we pave a clearer path for a future where financial parity can be realized.Key Takeaways:Understanding Money Supply: Amy introduces listeners to the basic concepts of money supply, categorized into M1, M2, and M3, explaining their roles in economic growth and inflation.Historical Gender-Based Financial Inequality: The episode tracks the timeline of female financial rights, revealing the extent of historical discrimination that women faced in terms of property ownership, credit access, and professional opportunities.Legislative Milestones: Key legislative acts such as the Married Women's Property Act and the Title IX are highlighted, portraying their impact on women's rights and financial autonomy. The Persistent Gender Wage Gap: Despite progress, there remains a significant gap in earnings between women and men, citing statistics that reveal women earn approximately 85% of what men do.Call to Action for Financial Equality: Encouragement is given to allies—parents, partners, and friends—to support women in achieving financial literacy and independence.Notable Quotes:"The reason that I'm bringing this up is because we've been having a lot of conversations with people about money supply in general.""If you can't vote, you have no say over what does and doesn't happen to you.""So technically, women at that point in time, if they got pregnant prior to that, you could lose your job, you could lose your way of supporting yourself.""There's still a lot that we need to do to continue to bring parity to the way that women earn money, get paid, our relationship with money, all of that.""For Women's History Month, if you have a daughter, if you have a niece, if you have a wife, support her in the way that, you know, promotes this continued direction towards parity of pay."Resources:Rooted Planning Group:

Margaret Hardenbroeck (c. 1630-1690) was a Dutch-born trader and enslaver in the colony of New Amsterdam, later New York. Known as a “she-trader,” Margaret was one of the few women in the shipping business at the time, and along with second husband grew a successful trading empire, that traded in enslaved peoples, as well as tobacco and wheat. At the time of her death, it was believed she was the wealthiest woman in New York. In this episode of The Korea Pro Podcast, the entire Korea Pro team joins to unpack the biggest events this past week. Joon Ha begins by discussing the Seoul Central District Court's verdict against Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, who received a suspended one-year prison sentence for violating election laws during his 2022 presidential campaign. The team examines how this conviction could impact South Korea's already polarized political landscape. The discussion then shifts to John's insights on a developing investigation into former Moon administration officials over alleged THAAD-related intelligence leaks to China and domestic anti-THAAD activists. John explores how the Yoon administration might leverage this investigation to challenge the opposition's defense credentials, while also highlighting concurrent cases of Chinese technological espionage targeting South Korean firms. Jeongmin provides a critical analysis of recent government data showing record-high employment rates among married women. While some attribute this increase to President Yoon Suk-yeol's birth rate and childcare initiatives, Jeongmin reveals a more nuanced picture, examining how economic necessities, ongoing childcare challenges and persistent structural inequalities are driving these employment trends. Looking ahead, the team previews Lee Jae-myung's upcoming sentencing hearing on Monday for alleged subornation of perjury charges, considering how this additional legal challenge could further impact his political future and the Democratic Party's trajectory. About the podcast: The Korea Pro Podcast is a weekly 15-minute conversation hosted by Editorial Director Jeongmin Kim (@jeongminnkim) and Editor John Lee (@koreanforeigner), diving deep into the most pressing stories shaping South Korea — and dissecting the most complicated ones for professionals monitoring ROK politics, diplomacy, culture, society and technology.
