Angela Andrews is a Data Analyst with degrees in Psychology and Philosophy she was diagnosed with autism after it was determined that her first child had the condition, she has since become and advocate for autism and acceptance of neurodiversity in the public sphere Michael starts off this interview by getting a handle on the nature and symptoms of the condition, before asking about living with it in the workplace. Angela shares anecdotes about coping mechanisms, how the spectrum of ‘functionality’ is more useful to observers than actual autistics, and the strain of masking her condition. As a mother of five autistic children, Michael's asks her to share her experience on parenting and how to engage with school personnel - the pendulum there seems to swing from no accommodation at all to more help than is strictly necessary, with little in between. They go into specialty schools for the neurodiverse, and Angela seems hesitant to say they’re a cure-all, especially as many special education facilities tend not to offer the full range of extra curricular and social opportunities of the mainstream options. In her dealings with other parents in the community, she finds there’s less of a push for people to become their own advocates for their needs and far to much focus on guilt, blame-seeking and the notion of fixing children. It seems to stem from a mix of fear, misunderstanding and a sense of mourning for the children they ‘should’ have had. When you ask a data scientist on to the podcast the conversation does tend toward a lot of talk about stats and correlations, Michael does pick Angela’s brain about trends in the data and whether or not the modern world is making anything better or worse for her community. The tools in place are all double-edged; online communities help the overstimulated and anxious engage with each other more readily, but they perpetuate myths about causes and spread unhelpful treatment ideas. And while the voices of the neurodiverse are being better heard, there are a lot of perceptions that are hard to break, we all like Rain Man as a film, but we say neurodiversity because there’s more to the condition than meltdowns and savantism. We as a show would like to thank Angela for being so informative and hope that our listeners come away a little more understanding.
