"Do not let other people dictate your path." What do astronauts, Olympic champions, and Nobel laureates do differently that allows them to achieve at such a high level? My guest today is Dr. Ruth Gotian, and she will reveal the four attributes common to all high achievers - and how you can build this into your life! It was clear from the minute I met Ruth that she was passionate and committed to studying excellence, and helping others benefit from it. Ruth is the Chief Learning Officer and Assistant Professor of Education in Anesthesiology at Weill Cornell Medicine, and shares some fascinating insights. In this episode we chat about her new book, The Success Factor, and you'll learn: How passion and purpose serve high performance (and why it matters) Why perseverance is a hallmark of high achievers worldwide The power of a strong foundation and what it means for YOU (don't miss this one!) How informal, continuous learning creates a huge advantage And a lot more! High Achievers Learn Continuously The last thing that all high achievers do – the astronauts, Nobel prize winners, CEOs, et cetera – is they're continuously learning, and they're learning through informal means. They're not sitting in a classroom. We've all heard that billionaires like Warren Buffet and Bill Gates read three to eight hours a day. That's fabulous, but it's not reading that made them billionaires. It's opening their mind to new knowledge. And the high achievers, what they're able to do is take ideas from different industries and re-imagine them and use them in their own industries. High Achievers Have Rest Days, Too The other thing that surprised me is how much these high achievers protect their down time. It was very important to them because they realized later on in their career that their rest days are as important as the work days. That in order for the work days to be productive, you must have the rest days. Success as Defined By Dr. Ruth The definition of success changes based on who you ask and based on rank and gender as well. That's something to consider. But for me, there are certain markers that we can look at to determine whether the person is “successful”. First is they would have made a fundamental paradigm shift through their work. Their work is so extraordinary that it lead other people to change the way they do things and perhaps, how they think about things. Two, as they were moving up through the ranks, they lift other people up with them so it's not just about them. For the whole month of August, The Freedom Sisters Podcast is brought to you by IDIG, LLC. Today, we sit down with Tiffany Adams, currently still serving in the Army, a mom and a leader. She is the first of five women we get to hear from this month from the iDIG team. iDIG is the Innovative directions investment group, an organization that understands leadership is a continuous process at all levels, and they tailored their leadership programs to fit individual company needs. Globally, women hold just 24% of senior leadership positions. The U.S. lags behind the global average at 21%, compared to China where women hold 51% of senior leadership slots. Women represent 45% of the S&P 500 workforce, but only 4% of the CEOs, according to iwl.nichols.edu. We know this all too well in the military where only 18% of the force is female and in 2008, Gen. Ann Dunwoody would be the first female 4-star general ever. We know that women are worthy and capable of leadership, but how do we get there when there is little or no mentorship? All 5 of the women we will hear from in August 2021, are leaders and have held leadership positions in and out of the military and have developed classes and an entire business to helping other leaders thrive. I hope you are hungry for this wisdom. My favorite debate of all time gets hashed out each episode....are leaders made or are they born? www.idigllc.com www.freedomsisters.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/freedomsisters/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/freedomsisters/support

Ann started in the Women's Army Corps at a time of segregation and ended as one of the most important military officers in the Nation. Her journey holds great wisdom our Army today. In 2010, PBS published a story about what women get out of being in the military. Spoiler alert: It’s all the same stuff men love about their military careers. From an opportunity for higher education to the availability of health care to simply taking pride in their work, military members of both sexes gain a lot mentally and physically from serving our country. But, in truth, the rest of us are the ones who benefit most from their service. Today, we’re saluting women everywhere who are soldiers, veterans, fighters, survivors and courageous role models. General (Ret) Ann Dunwoody holds the distinction of being the first woman in the US Military to achieve the rank of four-star general. But when you listen to her speak and understand a little bit of who she is as a person, you get the sense that there is no military rank high enough to quantify who she is as a leader. Her 37 plus years of military service have helped transform the US military for the better, and inspired other servicemembers to become incredible leaders like herself. She has deployed in support of major combat operations from Desert Storm to the Global War on Terror, and finished up her military career by commanding the largest global logistics network in the Army.
