Government's new Foreign Investment Strategy w/ UOA Business School senior lecturer Burt Burmester: 12 February, 2025

On the ninth of February, the government announced its plans to incentivise migrants to invest in New Zealand. Foreign investment refers to when an individual, company or government invests money in businesses in another country. Foreign investment can bring economic benefits such as job creation, increased capital flow and access to new markets, which New Zealand is severely lacking. The government aims to welcome more people to contribute to Aoteroa and make it easier to do so. The new “Invest NZ” agency is modelled off the success of Ireland's Industrial Development Agency and Singapore's Economic Development Board. Sasha spoke to the University of Auckland's Burt Burmester about the government's foreign investment strategy. He claims that incentivising foreign investment from sovereign wealth funds does not grant New Zealand access to highly sought-after industrial knowledge. We also spoke about alternatives to foreign investment strategies and how to increase New Zealand's capital. Here is that interview.

Hello Mumma's! This weeks episode is with the lovely Sarah who is the Mom to 17 month old Ruby. Trigger warning - in this episode we discuss open heart surgery, hospital stays in NICU, PICU, SCBU & Starship so if this is triggering for you I would suggest skipping this episode.Sarah, her partner Rupert & Ruby have been on a journey many of us cannot even fathom. After battling Hyperemisis Gravidarum "HG" in her pregnancy, at Sarah's 20 week scan it was discovered that there was something wrong with Ruby's heart. After the scans were looked over by her Obstetrician and what felt like the longest wait ever, Sarah & Rupert were told that Ruby had a Congenital Heart Disease "CHD" and Tetralogy of Fallot "TOF". CHDs affects 1 in every 100 births, Sarah shares with us her pregnancy experience, the conversations, tests and decisions that had to be made in the lead up to Ruby's birth. After Ruby was born, Sarah shares the experience of what her fourth trimester was like - multiple hospital stays in NICU, SCBU, Starship, helicopter transfers, tests, scans, tubes - hardly the experience Sarah envisioned when she became pregnant. At 12 weeks old, Ruby had open heart surgery to correct the defect in her heart. Sarah takes us through this experience and what life is like for herself, Ruby & Rupert now - spoiler alert Ruby is a thriving, happy, little girl.Sarah opens up about how this whole experience has impacted her own wellbeing including counselling and needing to go back on anti depressants as well as how it impacted her & Rupert's relationship. Sarah found her heart family village online through community groups both within in NZ and overseas. Heart Kids NZ is a nonprofit organisation in Aoteroa that provides lifelong support to the children, teens, adults and whanau impacted by childhood heart conditions and has been an incredibly important part of Sarah's village. All she wanted when she was pregnant was to speak to other families going through something similar who had come out the other side. Sarah's hope in sharing her story is to both raise awareness of CHDs but also so that anyone going through something like this knows that they are not alone.Sarah is happy for people to connect with her on Instagram if they want to chat and you can find her here @sarahkilner. I hope you love this very special episode Mumma's and if you do please rate & review on whichever platform you choose to listen on and follow along on socials @bumptomum.podcast.Enjoy!

She's played hockey for NZ and she is currently the captain of the White Ferns cricket team.  She made her first class debut at 14 and has been in the national side since she was 17 (she's 32 now). She's a bloody laugh and I loved our chat.  She was 100% open and honest about a terrifying breakdown she experienced that saw her walk away from the game she loves until she felt ready to return.  We also talk about living with diabetes, her really-reaaly long distance relationship, playing in all boys teams as a kid and loads more.  Theres a fair bit of cricket chat in here.  But shes such a good story teller that it is all pretty good stuff. After initially meeting in year 10 over their love of Chance the Rapper’s ‘Acid Rap’ mixtape, who knew that years later Elijah Manu & Albert Purcell would go on to become New Zealand’s leaders in hip-hop as the duo Church & AP.  The duo’s big break came just before Summer ‘18 when ‘Ready Or Not’ was making the rounds as a radio exclusive through New Zealand. Now 4 million plays later, Church & AP have become frontrunners of a whole new sound New Zealand has never heard before. Recently releasing their debut album ‘TEETH’, Church & AP have brought this new alternative hip-hop sound to Aoteroa. Working closely with producer Dera Meelan, the two have moved away from the traditional hip-hop and trap soundscape to create their very own lane. As they approach their sophomore album, the duo have teased a trio of tracks ‘Aston Martin’, ‘War Outside’ and ‘60K’ further proving there’s no one making music quite like Church & AP in Aotearoa. For the very first session at the very first Going West Festival in 1996, it felt appropriate to open with the original language of Aoteroa, te reo Māori, with a session on Māori oral and written literature called Breathing Words. We were very proud to bring three stellar Māori voices to the stage to explore important Māori oral and acoustic traditions through te reo and taonga pūoro, and examine how they inform written literature and what ‘literacy' means in the context of Aotearoa. Guests for this session were Ngāhuia Te Awekotuku, Robert Sullivan and Bernard Makoare. Ngāhuia Te Awekotuku (Te Arawa, Tūhoe) is a leading feminist writer, lesbian-rights activist and advocate for Māori sovereignty. She has contributed to many international feminist journals and published both fiction and research-based works internationally. Robert Sullivan (Ngāpuhi) is a poet and academic. He is a significant internationally published Māori poet with seven collections of poetry released. His poetry is also widely anthologised. Sullivan's writing explores dimensions of contemporary urban experience, including local racial and social issues. His writing has a postmodern feel, where history and mythology, individual and collective experience, become areas of refined focus. Sullivan's work has won or been nominated for many awards Bernard Makoare (Te Waiariki, Te Kai Tutae, Te Rarawa, Ngapuhi-nui-tonu) is a traditionally taught wood carver, taonga pūoro musician and practising artist and designer. His work is a reflection of his heritage, his environments and the importance he places in whanaungatanga and relationships between people, places and significant objects.
