Microplastics are a widespread, ubiquitous environmental contamination. The Adirondack park is one of the most pristine parts of our state, but even those gorgeous mountains are not safe from the microplastics brought in by hikers and their gear. Dr. Joe Dadey, executive director of Adirondack Hamlets to Huts, and Dr. Tim K. Keyes of Evergreen Business Analytics researched these findings and shared their conclusions in a report (see link below) as they spoke about this with Mark Dunlea and Benno Greene about the report they created. I'm holding a postcard today that feels different from most of the others in my collection. It doesn't show a grand hotel, a busy beach, or a flashy tourist attraction. No, this one shows something quieter—two hand-built huts sitting in the dirt beneath a wide Texas sky. They're simple. The one on the left looks to be made of thick mud with a thick palm-thatched roof. The one on the right? A little taller and more open, woven from sticks and palm fronds. Between them, a crooked tree leans toward the camera, its branches rustling above a bench made from a rough-cut board. There's no pavement, no electricity, no cars—just silence. The caption on the back reads: “Palm leaves, mud, and branches of trees are about all that is necessary to build La Chozas (The Huts). The future of nearly a third of all DOC huts and tracks is in limbo, with the department facing a 30 percent shortfall in funding to maintain them. Environment reporter Kate Green spoke to Corin Dann.

In this episode, Paul Fess (LaGuardia Community College) explores the connections between Martin Delany and the songwriters Joshua McCarter Simpson and Stephen Foster. Embedded in the mix of Delany's novel Blake; or, The Huts of America are several songs that invoke some of Foster's most familiar melodies, such as those associated with the songs “Oh! Susanna” and “Uncle Ned.” Digging through the archive, scholars have discovered these parodies to be the work of the relatively obscure Joshua McCarter Simpson, an activist in Ohio's Colored Conventions movement, a conductor on the underground railroad, and, with the publication of his Original Anti-Slavery Songs, the first African American to produce a songbook of original compositions. This episode examines how Delany and Simpson strategically repurpose Foster's sentimentalism-infused melodies, navigating the racial complexities of antebellum culture. While Foster aimed to soften the degrading aspects of minstrelsy, Delany and Simpson use these melodies to create a Black abolitionist discourse, challenging sentimental aesthetics. The novel's characters, like Simpson's lyrics, redefine the nostalgic longing in Foster's songs, emphasizing the harsh realities of enslaved life. Delany and Simpson employ music as a tool for political activism, crafting a counterhegemonic discourse and fostering a sense of collective resistance against enslavement. Fresh off a return from a two-night ski adventure at the Frog Lake Huts, right before PowBot's departure for Japan, the boys do a catch up, recapping the of the most dangerous periods of avalanche conditions ever in the Sierra Nevada. The boys discuss the unfortunate inbounds fatality on KT-22 opening day at Palisades Tahoe and PowBot recounts the only time he's ever been fully buried in an avalanche – inbounds at Sugar Bowl – and a second recovery he was involved in immediately after being unburied by a partner. The boys also chat about the inherent dangers of skiing inbounds on a storm day, terrain management, proper recovery gear, the dangers of group think and the expert halo, the risks of traveling in the backcountry and methods employed to stay safe even on considerable and high avalanche danger days, and why PowBot thinks avalanche education and safety is better in Canada and Europe than the U.S. The last third of the show recaps the boys' trip to the Frog Lake Huts (where Mind the Track was born a year ago) and successfully negotiating avalanche terrain in dangerous conditions en route.
