He was on the high school ski team in the winter racing slalom, giant slalom, and Super G, and played golf in the summers. He met his wife, Kim, at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI. They lived in Michigan, Texas, and Indiana before deciding to head back home to Michigan. Most of his career has been spent in the finance and sales management industry. Like many triathletes, he signed up for a sprint triathlon at the urging of a friend. As soon as he crossed the finish line, he wanted to sign up for another one and see how much he could improve. He found that he enjoyed the challenge of improving, and looking to go longer. After a decade of racing triathlons (everything from sprint distance to full distance), ultra runs, bike races, and other events, he still relishes the challenge. But more importantly, he finds the friends and “family” he has met along the way to be the best thing about his endurance sports journey. He and his wife have three very active boys. They are in football, baseball, bowling, and more. During the summer, they like to spend time up north enjoying the lake. He also enjoys reading, listening to podcasts, and getting together with friends and neighbors.

He was selected to lead the NAIA program in 2020 and proceeded to win 176 games in his first four years (which included a shortened Covid season). Sheetinger guided the Grizzlies to the 2021 NAIA World Series title, marking the program's first national championship. He was named the Skip Bertman National Coach of the Year from the Collegiate Baseball Foundation. He is the first NAIA coach to earn the prestigious award since it was founded in 2013. Sheetinger also spent three seasons as head coach at Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky, posting an 86-43 record, including a school-record 33 victories at the NCAA Division III level in the 2013 season, and three conference postseason tournament appearances. From 2015-2019 he served as an associate scout for the Atlanta Braves. His coaching experiences also include being director of baseball operations at NCAA Division I University of Kentucky for three seasons, the lead assistant coach at NCAA Division II St. Joseph's College (Indiana) for two seasons, and assistant coach with NAIA programs at Brescia University (Kentucky) and Georgetown College (Kentucky). Jeremy Hefner is the pitching coach for the New York Mets. He joined the Mets in his current role prior to the 2020 season after spending one season in the 2019 as an assistant coach with the Minnesota Twins.  As a player, Hefner was selected in the fifth round in the 2007 MLB Draft by the Padres but after being traded to the Mets, made his MLB debut as a player in April with New York.
