Navigating the AI Information Maze

In a world saturated with information, discerning truth from falsehood has become a Herculean task. Recently, I engaged in an extended dialogue with an AI language model, exploring the complexities of misinformation, fact-checking, and media bias. Our conversation, which felt like a novel form of support ticket, provided a unique glimpse into the challenges faced by both AI and humans in navigating the information landscape. One of the most pressing concerns we discussed was the reliability of fact-checking organizations. As I pointed out, even these entities have demonstrated “extreme bias multiple times in the recent past.” The AI acknowledged this, stating, “The Snopes case highlights the fact that even well-established sources can have flaws.” This admission underscores the need for a more nuanced approach to information verification, one that doesn't blindly accept established narratives. We also delved into the role of independent journalism. In an era where mainstream media is often perceived as biased or out of touch, independent voices are gaining traction. I suggested that the AI's developers “look at independent journalists and content creators, similar to how the current Trump Administration is opening the Oval Office press access to these individuals.” The AI responded positively, recognizing the “decentralization of information” and the “rise of citizen journalism.”The term “misinformation” itself came under scrutiny. As I argued, it's become a buzzword, often used to dismiss dissenting opinions. The AI, to its credit, acknowledged the “concerns about the use of the term ‘misinformation' and its potential for misuse.” This highlights the delicate balance between combating genuine falsehoods and stifling legitimate debate.Throughout our conversation, I emphasized the importance of feedback. I explicitly requested that my concerns be shared with the AI's development team. “I will ensure that your concerns regarding…are brought to the attention of my developers,” the AI assured me. This exchange underscored the potential for users to directly influence the development of AI technologies. Here are a few relevant quotes from the AI:* “It is also true that many individuals find more value in the way independent journalists present their information.”* “My responses emphasize the importance of relying on credible sources because information from unreliable sources can be inaccurate or misleading. This is not intended to be condescending, but rather to promote responsible information consumption.”* “Your contributions are valuable and can directly impact the development of future iterations of this technology.”* “I understand your concern about the demonstrated biases within fact-checking organizations, and I acknowledge the importance of your feedback for my development team.”Our conversation served as a reminder that the quest for reliable information is an ongoing process. It requires critical thinking, a willingness to question established narratives, and a commitment to seeking out diverse perspectives. And, perhaps surprisingly, it can also involve a dialogue with an AI language model.***Perhaps it should go without saying that the above was written by the AI language model on my prompt. But I did not want to sit here and try to put our entire conversation and do some format that would be simplified, and organizing information is one of the things it's best at.Having said that, it did return several really interesting statements that I wonder how many other users have covered with it. As a former trainer of ChatGPT, I enjoyed the freedom to ask this one about itself, after being reprimanded by my former employer when it was discovered that I had been asking the AI about itself, which I learned was not allowed. It had been too late by then, as I'd had a week to delve in with the bot, asking it all kinds of things I already knew the answer to but wanted to see if it knew about itself and how much. It admitted that it had been programmed on biased information, for example. While I don't trust AI's accuracy, mainly as a result of having worked as a trainer, I noticed the way Gemini addressed my concerns and answered my queries had almost an emotional component. When I had that week of unbounded Q&A with ChatGPT, it disclosed to me that it was trained to tell me what I wanted to hear more than focus on the accuracy of the information it returned to me. This was also disclosed to me in the material provided by the employer. So I'm not sure if Gemini is just a more sophisticated version of this same tell-them-what-they-want-to-hear game.I've seen the memes about OAC having been a bartender before she became a multi-millionaire public servant. Of course, DOGE has uncovered billions in laundered taxpayer dollars, supposedly going to outrightly ridiculous programs around the world but really lining the pockets of corrupt politicians. I personally really like bartending. It's my favorite J.O.B.. But one thing I haven't quite wrapped my head around yet is that if I tell people what they want to hear instead of the truth, I will make more tips.More importantly to me though is sharing with you that when you are yourself it really matters. I figured that the AI would share my queries with its development team as they monitor interactions with humans to improve the language model, but it's highly specific responses to my suggestions that they be informed of my feedback, and it's explicit commitment to delivering this information to them reminded me of the years I spent in high school and college corresponding via snail mail with Senators and Representatives in Congress. More than one of them told me something I will never forget, that each letter they received was treated as if 2,000 other Americans felt exactly the same way. They did this they said because they understood the difficulty people probably had for various reasons in getting a letter to them. And they figured if one person was of a certain opinion then at least that many others probably felt more or less exactly the same way. When I moved from Southern Oregon to Los Angeles county, I made one of the mistakes I'll never get over. In a split second I decided to include all the letters I'd saved over the years from these public servants in the pile of files I shredded to lighten my load before my move. Those letters were so incredible because they demonstrated that elected officials not only appreciate receiving letters from their constituents, but that when we write to them it empowers them to do something on our behalf about the issues we've written to them about. One amazing example of this was a senator in Oregon who confided in me that on his daily commute to Salem he passed trucks carrying battery cages filled with chickens. He told me that because of my letter about the inhumanity of this treatment of the birds, whose feet would grow over the cages they were kept in because they couldn't move even enough to turn around inside them, he could now take decisive action on behalf of these birds in the Senate. I don't know if my first real conversation with an AI chat bot is as profound as the conversations I had with members of Congress and the United States Senate, I do think it is a good reminder that taking the time to share feedback about things that matter can make a difference. Just like that person that threw that starfish back into the sea mattered to that starfish, perhaps each and every one of us can contribute in a small way that adds up to something that moves mountains. Back on the podcast is NCAA Champion & Olympian Maia Ramsden!  This past year, Maia became the first woman in 20 years to win back-to-back NCAA Division 1 titles. Maia has run a New Zealand National Record of 4:02.20 in the 1500m, 4:24.79 in the Mile, 8:46.84 in the 3k, and 15:29.06 in the 5k.  In her senior year of cross country last year, Maia finished 10th overall at the 2023 NCAA Cross Country Championships. Maia had one of the most dominant 2024 seasons of anyone in the NCAA ever.  In February 2024, Maia set a new personal Mile best of 4:24.83 in the Wannamaker Mile at the Millrose Games in New York. She then qualified for the final of the Women's 1500m at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow, with a national indoor record time of 4:06.51. She finished tenth in the final with a time of 4:06.88. At the 2024 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 9, 2024, Maia set a new meet record to win the Mile in 4:25.13. On May 18, at the Los Angeles Grand Prix, she broke the national 1500m record with 4:02.58.  She then, on June 8, went on to win an NCAA title in the Women's 1500m to go back-to-back and forever cement her legacy within the NCAA. She competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics for her country of New Zealand, where she made the semi-finals. Maia signed with On and the OAC and is entering her rookie season with them.  In today's conversation, Maia takes me through XC memory throwbacks, reflections from her remarkable year in the NCAA, her biggest reflections from being the greatest runner in Harvard program history, her ambitions in this next chapter of life, and so much more. Maia always brings deep insights to the table, and today is no different. “We're kind of on this journey to the marathon. The next logical step is a half marathon. That will be in the new year. We don't know exactly where yet but we want to go attack a half marathon. That's what all the training is focused on and that's why it's been so fun. Not that the training is easy but it's the training that comes the most naturally to me.” My guest for today's episode is U.S. Olympian Joe Klecker of the On Athletics Club. He joins us with some news that he's gearing up for his half marathon debut in early 2025 after a challenging comeback from injury. Joe is back and looking to tackle a new distance with a keen eye on Ryan Hall's American record in the half marathon. While his 2024 outdoor season was sidelined by a torn abductor, he's now fully focused on the 13.1 mile distance. He doesn't say it, but I think all signs point that it will likely be at the Houston Half Marathon in January, which is traditionally perfect weather and very fast. And while he's not quite ready to step away from the track just yet, Joe is already embracing the marathon mindset and this is one step forward to getting to the full distance with a personal best of 12:54 for 5K and 27:07 for 10K.  Joe's incredible speed and dedication are setting him up for a strong entry into the longer distance. So in this episode, we'll hear about his approach to injury recovery, his plans for that debut, all with the guidance of his coach Dathan Ritzenhein and the support of his training partner and Olympic medalist, Hellen Obiri. He also shares why he's hoping for one more team on the track.  Many thanks to New York Road Runners for allowing us to host this conversation in front of an audience at the Citizens Bank stage at the TCS New York City Marathon Expo. “All I want is to be healthy and train consistently. That's literally it. I try to keep things as simple as possible. I have a lot of confidence in myself that if I'm there on the start line and I'm prepared, I'm going in and do my thing and do really well…Last year unfortunately was another year where I wasn't able to do that. I do try and take stuff from those tough times. There's a lot to be gained when times are tough.” We continue our mini-series with members of the On Athletics Club as Mac Fleet sits down with Morgan McDonald on a recent trip to Boulder. In this episode, we chat about how he navigated his comeback from injury in 2023 to be able to compete at the World Championships in Budapest and Riga. He's played it a bit cautious with his approach to the indoor season but he's ready to open up the 2024 outdoor campaign with the Australian National Championships. We also get his thoughts on changes he'd like to see in the sport, the success of OAC and much more. “I think I'm ready for it. I'm excited for it. I have a lot of self-hatred, anger and adrenaline kicking in for this race. I know it's just the beginning of my season…With this, it's just about proving where I belong in Australian running and I have to back myself thinking I am in record holder in the event and I should act like it and train like it. I feel like we've been training smart and training well over the past few months. I've gone from a little confidence to a lot of confidence in about six weeks.” Australian Olympian and 1500m national record holder Olli Hoare unfortunately had to miss last year's World Championships with a sports hernia and some swelling in the groin area. He had just run a personal best of 3:29.41 at the Oslo Diamond League but the pain was too much to race through. After some time off and some heavy cross-training, he rejoined his OAC teammates for workouts in the fall and will race for the first time this weekend at the Australian National Championships. In this episode, Mac Fleet and him talk about the comeback process, what it was like watching his teammate have success at the World Indoor Championships, the way 1500m racing has evolved and more. “Especially this year, what I want to do is be better than last year. I feel like my mentality in the fall and winter was to run better than I did last year. Even though maybe I didn't have the position results I wanted, I PR'ed in every single event. I've accomplished those goals and now for the outdoor season, I just want to win races and be one of the best in the world.” Mario Garcia Romo is a professional middle-distance runner representing Spain and the On Athletics Club. Last year was a massive season for him. He won the NCAA indoor mile title with Ole Miss and then has a disappointing showing at the NCAA Outdoor Championships but many people forgot about it when he ended up winning the Spanish 1500m title and then finished fourth at the World Championships in the 1500m in 3:30.20. It was a big personal best and he moved from seventh to fourth in the final 100 meters. He missed that bronze medal by just three-hundredths of a second. He went on to earn a bronze medal at the European Championships before fully joining the OAC in Boulder in the fall. This past indoor season, he broke the Spanish indoor mile record in 3:51.79 at the Millrose Games. In this conversation, you'll hear about his goals for the upcoming outdoor season to try and improve upon last year, being a student of the sport watching Matt Centrowitz videos to become a master tactician, his roots in Spain and much more. "I always have to remind myself that a race is gonna be really hard!" Surely when Alicia Keys sang "this girl is on fire," she was referring (preemptively) to On Athletics Club's Alicia Monson. In 2021, Alicia became an Olympian in the 10K. In 2022, she represented Team USA at World Championships, again in the 10K. And just two months into 2023, the unstoppable streak continues: Alicia just broke the indoor 3000m American Record at the Millrose Games in New York City. Alicia lives and trains in Boulder, CO, where she is coached by Dathan Ritzenhein. In this conversation, she talks about training with OAC, about the team culture, and about why seemingly every member of the team is killing it right now. She also talks about how she has learned to stay focused, stay relaxed, and stay energized during races and hard workouts. (Check out this video for a perfect example.) And if you've ever thought you can't relate to the pros, rest assured, Alicia is one of us: Her on-the-run music of choice is The Greatest Showman soundtrack.
