Tonight, we present two examinations of the world of newspapers and investigative reporting, first comedy, then something a little more dramatic. The newspaper comic strip “Blondie” was created by Chic Young and started running in 1930. It is still running, as I record this, almost 92 years later. It features the domestic mis-adventures of the eponymous Blondie, and her husband Dagwood, Bumstead. And, in this case, their children, son Alexander and daughter Cookie. The success of the comic strip launched a series of 28 “Blondie” movies, produced from 1938 to 1950, all starring Penny Singleton as Blondie and Arthur Lake as Dagwood. The weekly radio series, also starring Singleton and Lake, ran concurrently on various networks and for various sponsors from 1939 to 1950. This is a typical episode, with Dagwood accidentally getting involved in embarrassing shenanigans. And I particularly enjoy some of the sound effects. Then real-life politician, writer, and newspaper publisher Will Rogers, Jr. plays a heightened version of himself on “Rogers of the Gazette.” This episode also features young reporters hunting for scandal, and finding just a bit of crime and peril. Blondie is a sitcom adapted from the Blondie comic strip by Chic Young. It was on radio from 1939 to 1950 on several different networks. Dagwood was played by Arthur Lake and Penny Singleton played Blondie, but not for the entire run. In this episode Ann Rutherford plays Blondie. Also heard is Hanley Stafford as Mr. Dithers, Dagwood's boss. It is near Christmas and Dagwood asks Mr. Dithers for a Christmas bonus... but Mr. Dithers is not in a holiday mood, after all he gave Dagwood $5 a couple of weeks before... what could he have possibly spent all that money on in just two weeks! The Bumsteads, Dagwood and Blondie are celebrating Valentine's Day... sort of... this sitcom had an 11 year run with Arthur Lake starring as Dagwood and Penny Livingston playing the role of Blondie for most, but not all of the 11 seasons, especially near the end of the run in 1951. "A Christmas Carol," by Charles Dickens, as through the eyes of Dag Cratchit. Mr. Dithers is Ebenezer Scrooge, of course. Also an episode of Lum n Abner from December 21, 1944 as Lum fishes for a leather desk set for Christmas, but no one seems to be taking the hint.

BLONDIE - Not many cartoon strips from the 30's are still popular, but Blondie is one of the few. Still widely read today, Blondie was also made into movies and of course, radio. Her beau, soon to be husband, Dagwood and her were an unlikely match. Dagwood actually came from money and his parents were displeased with his choice of girlfriend, but boldly defying them, he accepted being disowned and married Blondie anyway. In the beginning, Blondie was a flapper and portrayed as a bit of an airhead, but marriage seemed to mature her and she was actually the more levelheaded of the two, often getting Dagwood out of the messes he got himself into when he would cry out "BLONDIEEEEEEEE!!" Almost everyone could see a bit of themselves in the everyday lives of the Bumsteads and judging from the continued enjoyment of the characters, almost everyone still can. He was a native of Corbin, Kentucky. Lake appeared in films starting in the late 1920's, beginning as an adolescent character actor. By the sound era he was playing light romantic roles, usually with a comic "Mama's Boy" tone to them. He is best known for portraying the Blondie comic strip character of Dagwood Bumstead in the long-running series of Blondie films produced by Columbia Pictures from 1938 until 1950. He also portrayed the character in a 1957 Blondie television series. His work in the popular Blondie radio show earned him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6646 Hollywood Blvd. He died of a heart attack in Indian Wells, California on January 9, 1987 and was interred in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Hollywood.
Born Arthur Silverlake in Kentucky in April 1905, Arthur Lake was born into show business, as his parents had a vaudeville act which he joined while still a youth. In the late 1910s, the family made its way to California, where Arthur Lake would soon enter films as a juvenile lead. In 1924, Lake signed with Universal Studios and acted in many silent short subjects, nearly all of them comedies. But when Lake's contract was up in 1930, Universal dropped his option, sending his career into decline. Lake freelanced at Monogram, RKO, and other studios until signing a contract with Columbia Pictures in 1938 to portray Dagwood Bumstead in the Blondie series of films. The popularity of the first film, Blondie, in 1938 led to three follow-up films in 1939 and the introduction of the CBS radio series of the same name
