Big Town, a prominent long-running radio drama, captured the hearts of listeners with its compelling storylines and captivating characters. At its core, the show featured a corruption-fighting newspaper editor, a role initially portrayed by the renowned actor Edward G. Robinson from 1937 to 1942. During this time, Robinson brought his signature intensity to the role, echoing the conscience-stricken tabloid editor he had portrayed in the film Five Star Final. After Robinson's departure, the lead role was taken over by Edward Pawley from 1943 to 1952. Pawley's interpretation of the editor was more hands-on, actively engaging in crime-fighting endeavors. Under his stewardship, Big Town became a cultural phenomenon, transcending the radio airwaves and captivating audiences through film and television adaptations. The radio program, which aired from 1937 to 1952, featured a talented cast and crew. Edward G. Robinson's portrayal of Steve Wilson, the crusading editor of the Illustrated Press, was complemented by Claire Trevor's portrayal of his reporter sidekick "Lorelei." Over time, the female lead evolved from a society editor to a star crime reporter, providing a conscience to the tabloid-minded Wilson. The radio series achieved immense popularity, consistently ranking among the top radio programs of its time. It boasted a listening audience of between 10 and 20 million people, affirming its widespread appeal. In the realm of film, Big Town made its mark through four movies produced by Paramount Pictures' Pine-Thomas Productions studio. These films, released between 1947 and 1948, starred Phillip Reed as Steve Wilson and Hillary Brooke as Lorelei. All four films were based on radio and screenplays by Maxwell Shane, ensuring continuity with the original source material. Big Town's journey to television began in 1950, offering viewers a live telecast on CBS. The production later transitioned to film after relocating from New York City to Hollywood in 1952. The television series ran until 1956, airing on both CBS and NBC during its six-season run. Throughout its television tenure, Big Town underwent several changes, including the introduction of a documentary style similar to the popular show Dragnet. This shift brought a new level of realism and authenticity to the storytelling, further captivating audiences. The television series featured a talented cast, with Patrick McVey and Mark Stevens portraying Steve Wilson in different seasons. Five actresses graced the role of reporter Lorelei Kilbourne, adding depth and diversity to the character. Big Town's legacy extended beyond its radio and television incarnations. The series was adapted into a comic book published by DC Comics, reaching an even broader audience. The comic book captured the essence of the radio and television shows, bringing the crime-fighting adventures of Steve Wilson and Lorelei Kilbourne to life in a new medium. The enduring appeal of Big Town lies in its timeless themes and relatable characters. We've been waiting for this episode, a 1947 RKO noir double bill with two of the all-time greats, Jacques Tourneur's Out of the Past, in which Robert Mitchum's cool detective and Jane Greer's psychopathic moll work at cross purposes in their attempts to escape their shady pasts so that they can be free to love, and Robert Wise's Born to Kill, in which Claire Trevor's morally flexible social climber and Lawrence Tierney's paranoid psychopath just work at cross purposes. Mike Lisk AKA AP Mike of The Best Show and co-host of his own Egg Foo What?! podcast takes us INTO THE MARLOWEVERSE with a pair of very different portrayals of Raymond Chandler's cynical gumshoe Philip Marlowe. Mike's choice, MURDER MY SWEET (1944), is one of the first examples of film noir, and its success--along with DOUBLE INDEMNITY from the same year--added the spark that set off late 40s film noir explosion. It's also a way stoney and a total gateway drug to classic cinema with its snappy dialog and its trippy AF hallucination sequences. Former song-and-dance man Dick Powell plays Marlowe in this one, and he handles Chandler's dialog with a sense of cartoon humor that makes this one stand out. Directed by Edward Dmytryk (one of the Hollywood 10) with a script by John Paxton, the writer of several classic noirs (CROSSFIRE, CORNERED), and the uncle of crime fiction comic book writer Ed Brubaker (it runs in the family). Also starring noir ice queen Claire Trevor and ex-pro wrestler and Mike Mazurki. Like Dick Powell before him, Robert Montgomery used his portrayal of Marlowe to shed his nice guy image, only he did it while barely being seen onscreen! As director and star of LADY IN THE LAKE (1947), Montgomery shot the entire film from Marlowe's jaundiced point-of-view. We only see the private eye when he's looking at himself in the mirror, making it one of the strangest films every made. While Mike and the OMFYS crew can't quite agree on if this cinematic experiment is successful or not, they all think that Montgomery put the dick in private dick as he is the surliest of the movie Marlowes. This is really saying something when you consider that Humphrey Bogart, Elliott Gould, Robert Mitchum and growly-assed Liam Neeson have all taken turns as the detective, and none of them are Mr. Sunshine. With Audrey Totter as the femme fatale, and Lloyd Nolan as a tough-talking cop who might not be on the up-and-up. Streaming on Criterion Channel. Hi guys and welcome back to the mystery and comedy Old Time radio podcast. Please welcome to the show to kick off women's month for the month of March Miss Claire Trevor. Miss Trevor started her career out in 1929 appearing in many theater productions in Broadway shows before getting her big break in Hollywood and the early 1930s. Miss Claire Trevor starred in many movies and television shows but what two movies she is best known for is her 1944 movie murder My Sweet. And her performance which one her and academy award in 1948 key largo. Miss Trevor also appeared in many TV shows and tell her final performance in 1987. In murder she wrote Miss Trevor enjoy her retirement until passing away in 2000 even though Miss Claire Trevor has been gone for 23 years her memory and legacy will live on her TV shows movies and especially in her old time radio shows. Today Ms Claire Trevor comes to the show to reenact three of her suspense performances. In this first episode she plays a woman who has set set a deadly trap for her husband and his mistress in the Mistresses apartment. And it is called light switch. In this next episode Miss Claire Trevor plays another woman who tries to conduct a plan with her husband to get him finally free. By doing the unthinkable and killing his brother and it is called the plan. In the spinal episode Ms Claire Trevor plays a older sister who has moved on with her life and has a family of her own. While unfortunately for her little sister named Adele she can't let go of the promise that they made to each other on their mother's death bed. It is called the tail of two sisters. In this episode, I speak with Burt Kearns regarding his latest book which will be out in November titled Lawrence Tierney Hollywood's Real Life Tough Guy. He was Hollywood's "tough guy", on-screen and off (arrested 70 times).
