Long, long before George Burns became the senior citizen movie star of films like "The Sunshine Boys" and "Oh God!" he was familiar to radio and television audiences across the country as the grounded half of the comedy couple Burns and Allen, with real-life wife (and vaudeville partner) Gracie Allen playing the ditzy dame of the duo. Theirs was a 25-year run on the airwaves, and now for Project Audion, Pete Lutz has penned a fresh new Burns and Allen script that recalls the best of their radio work during World War II, right down to their sponsor of the time, Swan Soap. Much like Bob Hope and Jack Benny did, we find the two of them at a naval base entertaining the troops, along with guest stars Henry Fonda and Chico Marx. You'll be entertained by Audion's transcribed-live transcontinental cast of delicious, delirious vocal talents: John Bell (as George) in Alabama Mel Rose (as Gracie) in Pennsylvania Dana Gonsalves (as Bill Goodwin) in Texas Les Marsden (as Chico Marx) in California Scott R. McKinley (as Henry Fonda) in New Jersey Pete Lutz (as Mel Blanc as PO2 Ferguson) in Texas Robert L. Mills (as Adm. Tarbottom) in California Larry Groebe supervised the production. Join us for a Thanksgiving Special on Vintage Classic Radio during this Saturday's "Saturday Matinee." We begin with "The Life of Riley" in the episode "Thanksgiving Flashback," originally aired on November 19, 1948. In this nostalgic episode, Chester Riley reminisces about past Thanksgiving celebrations, leading to a series of humorous and heartfelt misunderstandings typical of the Riley household. The show stars William Bendix as Chester Riley, supported by Paula Winslowe as Peg, his wife, and John Brown as the ever-scheming Digby "Digger" O'Dell. Next, we step back to November 18, 1940, for the "Burns and Allen Show." This episode finds George Burns and Gracie Allen preparing for a festive Thanksgiving, only to encounter their usual mix-ups and misunderstandings. Alongside George and Gracie, the episode features regulars such as Bill Goodwin, the show's announcer, and musicians like Meredith Willson. Before our final presentation, we'll enjoy a musical interlude with Frank Sinatra singing "Homesick, That's All," offering a touch of melancholic nostalgia. We conclude with "The Jack Benny Show," in the episode "Jack Dreams He is a Turkey," which first aired on November 21, 1943. In this amusing holiday special, Jack Benny experiences a hilarious dream sequence where he imagines himself as a turkey just before Thanksgiving. To cap off our Thanksgiving Special, Kay Kyser and his orchestra will play the classic "Shine On Harvest Moon," sending us off with a melody perfect for the season. Join us for a blend of comedy, music, and Thanksgiving spirit this Saturday on Vintage Classic Radio.
Saxophonist/composer Phil Woods (born Nov 2, 1931), is by many musicians considered the major exponent of the alto saxophone for the past sixty years. His big, commanding sound, strong sense of swing, and command of harmony are second to none. His playing is totally distinctive and immediately recognizable. He may be best known to the average listener as the saxophone soloist on the Billy Joel hit, Just the Way You Are, but he can be heard on recordings with Steely Dan and other pop acts, but his real musical personality is as a pure bebopper, indeed, he kept a pure jazz group working under his leadership for the last 25 years of his life, with the same bassist (Steve Gilmore) and drummer (Bill Goodwin) the entire time.

This Saturday's "Saturday Matinee" on Vintage Classic Radio will kick off with "The Great Gildersleeve,” where the episode "Selling the Drugstore" from February 22nd, 1942, takes us on a humorous journey with Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, a character spun off from "Fibber McGee and Molly." In this episode, Gildersleeve contemplates selling the drugstore he's come to own, leading to a series of comedic events and moral dilemmas. The cast features Harold Peary as Gildersleeve, Walter Tetley as Leroy, Lillian Randolph as Birdie, Earle Ross as Judge Hooker, and Richard LeGrand as Mr. Peavey, among others, contributing to the show's unique blend of humor and heartfelt moments. Following that, we'll enjoy "The Burns and Allen Show" in the episode "Jack Benny in the Beauty Shop," originally broadcasted on November 2nd, 1943. This episode showcases the unmatched chemistry of George Burns and Gracie Allen in a hilarious mix-up involving Jack Benny at a beauty shop, leading to a flurry of misunderstandings and witty banter. The episode stars George Burns and Gracie Allen themselves, with Jack Benny playing his own notoriously stingy persona, alongside regulars like Bill Goodwin, the announcer, and musicians like Meredith Willson. To round out our matinee, "The Railroad Hour" presents the musical episode “Orange Blossoms” from February 11th, 1952. This production is a delightful adaptation of the operetta by Victor Herbert, telling a romantic and slightly comedic tale set against the backdrop of the French Riviera. The episode stars Gordon MacRae, bringing his vocal talents to the fore as the lead, with support from Lucille Norman, adding charm and depth to the musical numbers and narrative. Each show from our lineup offers a unique glimpse into the golden age of radio, from the comedic antics of beloved characters in "The Great Gildersleeve" and "The Burns and Allen Show" to the melodious romance of "The Railroad Hour." Together, they create a Saturday matinee that promises laughter, music, and a touch of nostalgia.

Bill Goodwin is a John Maxwell coach and has been helping individuals and organizations develop leadership skills for over 30 years. In this episode of Keep The Change, Bart Nollenberger and Bill Goodwin talk about the process of personal transformation, why it's important, and how to accept it in our lives with grace and hope. What we discuss in this episode: Bill recounts an experience he had as a 15-year-old in which he realized he needed to make some changes in his life when his mother caught him both demonstrating behavior (swearing) that was unbecoming of how he was raised and in a lie. He distinctly remembers in that moment deciding that he needed to decide who he wanted to be in life. Each of us has moments like Bill. Some are more severe, and some are simple everyday experiences that many can relate to. The most important aspect of accepting transformation is realizing that transformation is needed and wanted. Often we may find ourselves wondering how we arrived at our current circumstances. We may feel the need to ask, "Why me?" Both Bill and Bart discuss the importance of taking ownership over your circumstances so that you can accept that transformation is required. It's not until we desire to transform our lives that true, lasting change can occur. Listen to the full episode for more relatable life-changing stories shared by Bill Goodwin and Bart Nollenberger. Have a clearly defined goal. Then, make sure that you have the right tools to accomplish that goal. Once you've got a goal and you've got your tools, consistently take action. Swing that ax - but swing it at one tree only. Focus on accomplishing your goal, don't get distracted. If you want to grow, then keep walking in the journey towards your growth. Focus daily on what you want to learn, invest time and effort into learning new things and new skills. We have to be intentional about growth. Everything worthwhile in life is uphill, so if you feel difficulty in the pursuit of growth then you know that you are on the right path. We have to let go of downhill daily habits in order for us to find progress in growth. Just about every one of us has wondered at some point (if not MANY points) what it will be like when we die. Is there a heaven? Is there anything after this life? Is it just lights out? Bill Goodwin is a Maxwell Certified Leadership team member, the owner of Priority Living where he does speaking, training and coaching around leadership and has also served as the lead pastor at Lighthouse Church in Rosemount, MN. What may be the most important part of his story however is that he says that he met Jesus Christ during his near death experience after suffering respiratory failure at 27 years old. Derek goes through the entire story with Bill around what it is ACTUALLY like to die. We all have our own beliefs but is Bill's story the truth? Make sure to listen to find out!
