This week, we are talking with Randy Grimes, Baylor University Graduate and an award-winning 10-year veteran of the NFL for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Spending nearly 20+ years battling an addiction to painkillers developed while treating career-related injuries, Randy now uses his inspiring story of recovery and his 10+ years in the addictions industry. As an Interventionist and founding advocate at Athletes In Recovery,  Randy helps victims recover from drug and alcohol abuse.   One of Randy’s leading reasons for helping athletes recover from their substance use is due to the gripping reality of inauthenticity with injuries on the playing field. As we discuss what it’s like to suffer in silence, we find that there is a huge stigma attached to athletes and how they deal with their pain. Whether it’s a physical injury or mental health, athletes are often led to put on a fake face for their fans.    Randy shares how easy it is to hide pain on and off the field and what it’s like to feel alone in your addiction. As Randy shares his personal story with humility and honesty, he transforms the narrative to focus on prevention, intervention and treatment for substance use disorders and other health challenges. Join us as we dive into what led to Randy’s ultimate recovery and his heart behind helping others along the way.    Topics Discussed: Unhealthy stigmas behind professional athletes’ injuries Overwhelming emotions behind hiding your pain and struggle The harsh reality of hitting rock bottom and losing your identity Breaking the stigma behind asking for help Accepting people where they’re at  To learn more about Randy Grimes and his recovery journey, follow Athletes in Recovery https://proathletesinrecovery.org. A Man From Alberta Canada Sees a Sasquatch Battling a Moose and One Man sees a Creature with Fingers the size of a Red Bull can. Two Sasquatch reports from the Slave Lake area of Alberta Canada. The first report is from my very good friend Randy, who lives close to Slave Lake and experienced an unforgettable encounter one day when he was hunting a number of years ago. The second report comes from another hunter in the same area in 2019Randy is a Hunter and Nature Guide from Alberta Canada. He is a keen outdoors man and likes to hunt, sometimes alone and at other times with the family, he is used to the usual animals in the Forest and lakes and their habits and the noises they make, he and his wife spend a lot of time together in a tree stand just watching the bears on the property. At one point there were 8 Bears around them and Randy had to swat them away from the stand, so I think it is fair to say although Randy has a very relaxed and respectful attitude towards nature he isnt going to be messed with either. He has hunted all his life and spends days away in remote areas, tracking and sharing his knowledge of animal sign, I learnt more from him about tracking and signs in an hours phone call than I did in my 52 years on earth. He knows his animal sign, the wild food stuffs and a thousand little tidbits of knowledge lost to my culture decades ago, he explained how each animal leaves its own mark on a different section of the tree and how to recognise which sign comes from which animal. I was so grateful for his advice I asked him if he could share all of this knowledge with people who love the outdoors and also for us Bigfoot Researchers, Randy's advice was invaluable and I am looking forward to hear more from him.One hunting trip a number of years ago in the Slave Lake area left a memorable impression on Randy when he was hunting bear. He parked the car miles away from the site he was going to hunt in, he walked in steadily and quietly and was looking for tracks when he saw a Moose that came charging out of the bush, the Moose was a huge Bull and it looked terrorfied, its eyes were rolled back and it was making a screaming noise, "I had never heard an animal make before, I couldn't understand what I was seeing on the back of the Moose as there was a huge creature, clinging to it. Randy watched in awe as the two creatures battled each other in a life or death event. The creature was thickly muscled and had hands and feet, it had no neck and was very tall, it brought the Moose down to the ground, after swiping at the Moose over and over with its huge hands. It got itself in a position where it had its arms around the Moose's neck, It pulled backwards and the moose went down to the ground screaming"Everything went completely silent, no birds, no animals, just a hush. Randy was in awe, he walked backwards slowly and quietly out of the area and back to his truck and drove out of the area, he kept driving until he hit sidewalks and pulled in and stopped for a coffee in a bid to get his mind together and try and work out what he had just seen. He was out looking for Bear that day and he was fully armed but at no point did he feel like he needed to take a shot, he said he was more in awe of what he had seen, he also believes the creature was so focused on the Moose it didn't see him at any point."I watched the two creatures in a primal battle that ended with the death of the Moose, I was shaken up by what I had seen and I just couldn't get my thoughts together and I have kept the incident to myself for years and it has played on my mind ever since. When they first emerged from the bushes the 'man like creature' was really tall, the tail end of the moose came up to his mid rib section. And this wasn't a small Moose, it was a huge bull with 50" paddles. We chatted for a while about this sighting and Randy went on to explain another incident about 10 miles out of Edmonton."I have seen some very strange things in the forests out here, I once shot a Deer that was only about 40 yrds in front of me, I hit it clean and it dropped down into the long grass, the grass was about 4 ft tall and pretty thick. I waited and kept my eye out for Bears as this is the time they will get attracted by your kill and come charging at speed out of the undergrowth, and this grass was ideal for that very purpose. I walked over to collect the Deer which took a matter of seconds and it was gone? there was no trail out of there, no blood, no drag marks, no signs of animals or anything, I was stumped, I did a grid search and found nothing! I then did a spiral search moving out from where you could see the Deer had dropped and still nothing! I went back numerous times thinking 'surely il find the antlers or hide' or even smell it, I took my friend back there to and told him the whole story and we both looked together. I was still bugged by that for about 3yrs after it happened. But seeing that 'Creature' take down that Moose will stay with me forever. I have only ever told my Wife, one friend and You. I explained to my friend about the screaming noise the Moose and the creature made as they fought, still trying to convince myself it was just a Bear, but my friend said "Bears dont scream like that Randy" and he's right"On another hunting trip this time with his children in another area closer to Edmonton a place they have been before, but they had never been in some of the thicker areas, this time they decided to do just that so they headed for an area they hadn't been in before. As Randy and his sons were walking along looking for any tracks or signs of any passing Bears they ended up in one part of the property they hadn't checked before, they came to an area that looked strange, they had walked through thick forest shrubs and trees and emerged at a spot where everything was empty, there was no ground cover at all. The bark was missing off all of the trees and the floor was completely clean, not a leaf or a pine needle, no sticks or twigs, and it looked like someone had 'cleared' the entire area. They were puzzled by this and couldn't work out why this had happened or who would do it? As they were all looking around wondering what had happened in that spot, trying to come up with a reason for the 'destruction' when they noticed a dark figure some ways off what looked at first like a tall upright walking Bear, the Bear was walking in their direction, now as Randy explained normally Bears walk with a waddling gait, if they are down on all fours they swing their heads in all directions as they walk sniffing the air as they go, they can raise to two legs, but they look very awkward when they do it, they also have ears on top of their heads and claws not hands. "The creature coming our way was moving along walking fluidly, 'It' also had huge shoulders and no neck. It was really dark in colour and on seeing Randy and the children 'It' did a strange thing, 'It' turned in a sharp movement left (turned on a dime is the phrase) and moved off into the tree line and hid behind a tree, 'It' stayed behind the tree peeking out for a short time as we watched 'It'We kept asking each other "what is that" and the kids started to get a little spooked. The younger ones were a bit scared as we started to walk towards 'It', the idea of getting closer upset the kids so I turned around to move us off to safety and It used that moment to move really quickly dropping down to the ground and just vanishing. It was very similar to the creature I saw with the Moose, It was also thickly muscled and very dark in colour, It looked like iI had no neck, the head was right on the shoulders, and the chest was very broad. I took the children back to the vehicle and we left the area. I have never told anyone the details of that day, but my Wife has asked me over and over to contact you and share this event. It was only on speaking with you that I realised there may be others who have seen this creature also.Being a lover of the outdoors and the old ways, as you can imagine chatting with Randy was a joy for me, we chatted about the areas out there, the animals and their habits. As he is a guide and a hunter he had a wealth of stories to tell and I enjoyed everyone of them, now Im longing for snowy pine forests and tundra as I write from my little room in the UK. I explained to Randy that the behaviour he described ie: tree peeking, the fluid gait, the build, the dropping to the ground in an instant were all consistent with what we now call Sasquatch behaviour. It was 18 months ago when I first started chatting with Randy and since then his wife has had her own experience, which I will bring to you over the coming weeks.I did manage to find another recent report from around the Slave Lake Area that features a creature very similar to Randy's experience. Although nothing can come close to watching two animals fight for their lives, every Bigfoot report has an element of fear, simply seeing something impossible you can not explain is enough for most sound minded folk. A fellow hunter and guide had his own experience whilst out with his family in the Mitsue area in June 2019. The Witness was driving down a logging road Bear hunting with his wife and children at approximately 9:30pm when they spotted what appeared to be the rear end of a bear entering the left hand side of a cutline for a power line as they were driving by.The witness exited the vehicle and walked down the cutline approximately 50 yards to where the animal had entered the bushline. When he arrived, on the right hand side of the cutline (opposite to where the animal was spotted entering the bush) there were a number of poplar trees of 6-8″ diameter that began to shake violently. The witness described it as an “explosion” of movement in the bush next to him. Immediately he saw two very large hands start to part the trees and bushes with fingers approximately just smaller than a redbull can

He gives us a story shedding light on the current picture we have on racial equality today. Listen to the unfolding of Randy’s career, which was driven and inspired by a pivotal moment in his life as a teenager. A woman, by the name of Mrs. Burris, noticed Randy playing basketball with his friends on the street. Later she asked his father if he would let Randy play basketball on her son’s team. It was unheard of at this time for an African American in the South to be playing basketball on a caucasian team. As Randy continued to play, he eventually was given a full ride basketball scholarship in college. He had the opportunity to attend the same camps as some of the big name players, such as Micheal Jordan and James Worthy. Currently, Randy is the owner of a performance training company in Honolulu, called FitRM. In this episode, Randy talks about how he works with and provides value for each of his students. Randy believes that being a good athletic trainer involves more than just simply practicing technique. He believes that what makes a student successful is for the student to feel important and to feel seen. He believes in speaking to who they are inside. He focuses on the big picture of what really matters and gives back the chance that was given to him as a teenager. He gives back the chance to be seen and heard, the chance to shine. He encourages each of his students to be the best version of themselves. Especially in the times that we are in, Randy focuses on what really matters. #37: California’s Harmful New Freelancer Law, with Randy Dotinga

Deliberate Freelancer

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 21, 2019 32:40

Today’s episode is a little different. I have invited a guest on to explain a dangerous new law in California called AB5 that all freelancers need to know about. It threatens the very existence of freelancing. Even if you don’t live in California, you need to know about this law because other states are following suit. In fact, after I recorded this episode, I learned that New Jersey Democrats are enthusiastically supporting a bill based on California’s bill. New York state is also working on a similar law, and every Democratic presidential candidate is said to support this type of law because they see it as pro labor. So what is this and why should we worry? Assembly Bill 5—or AB5—takes effect in California on January 1. My guest in this episode, Randy Dotinga, a fellow freelance writer, explains the law and its ramifications to us. Randy is the former president of the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) and has been a full-time freelance writer for 20 years. He lives in California and continues to advocate against this law to state lawmakers. AB5 includes a three-pronged test that says California residents who are paid for their labor or services should be employees unless the companies paying them prove individuals meet the following three things: They must be free from the company’s control They must perform tasks outside the company’s main business They must operate a truly independent business It’s that second prong that will be particularly harmful to freelancers. As a writer working for a news site, newspaper or magazine, I am NOT performing tasks outside their main business. Therefore, I don’t meet that criteria and might have to be hired as an employee. One good note for freelance writers and photographers is that they were able to get included in the law a cap, which states that freelance writers and photographers can work as a freelancer for one company for up to 35 submissions of content per year. But after 35 submissions, they should be employees. As Randy says: “It’s like [the AB5 bill author] saved our lives, but it’s like she made us cut off a limb. I don’t know how grateful we should be about that.” And the law is not that simple. In fact, there are a lot of exemptions for certain industries. For some reason, grant writers, marketing professionals and graphic designers were awarded exemptions. Those freelancers who weren’t so lucky and were not exempt include writers, photographers, editors, audio editors, videographers, transcriptionists, translators, court reporters, truck drivers and on and on.   What you’ll hear in this episode from Randy: Companies outside California have already stopped hiring California freelancers. It’s the company’s responsibility to make sure freelancers meet the criteria to NOT be considered employees. It’s complicated and cumbersome, so companies are just looking elsewhere—they can easily hire freelancers in other states that don’t potentially jeopardize their company. Alternative newspapers and websites run by underrepresented communities rely on freelancers and cannot afford to hire writers as employees. In one example, a taxi driver who writes a weekly column about driving a cab for the local alternative newspaper will no longer be able to write that column. Randy says they’ve heard from people with disabilities who say freelancing allows them to have a flexible schedule, something being an employee doesn’t often provide. The law does have a business-to-business exemption. But there is a long list of criteria an individual has to meet to be considered a small business. Creating an LLC doesn’t seem to protect people because the law covers any independent contractor. However, creating an LLC may help convince your clients that you are a small business and make them feel more comfortable about hiring you. New York and other states—particularly Democrat-run states—support this type of law. Just this week, New Jersey announced a bill similar to California’s. Randy is working with ASJA and other groups to try to get the law changed. But they’re up against strong unions and other pro-labor groups. There’s a private Facebook group of mostly California writers organizing against this law. Search for Randy on Facebook and ask him for an invite. There are about 700 members now.   Resources: The full text of AB5   Friend Randy on Facebook and ask to be invited to the Facebook group of California freelancers organizing against this law. Even if you’re not in California, the group can help you get educated on this issue and how to fight it. In this episode, Joe sits down with his Candian double, Randy King! They talk about a variety of topics, including Randy's early journey from martial artist to security professional, and then developing his passion for teaching self defence. Trigger warning: This conversation does go quite dark, particular in relation to the stress of self-defence instructors accurately recreating "bad guys" in training, which leads to a conversation around child abuse and pedophilia, so please keep this in mind if you do not want to listen to that segment. **** Randy King is an accomplished, impactful, internationally acclaimed mentor, public speaker, author and globe-trotting father. Having trained in the world of martial arts from the age of 10, Randy embraced traditional training having earned 2 black belts in different disciplines, one being a 4th degree, in Modern Arnis. In 2002, Randy’s perspective and confidence were shattered when he survived a stabbing, while attempting to deescalate a violent situation while he was employed at an Edmonton club as Head of Security. Randy realized that the old ways did not serve as a functional platform for self defense and he became determined to redefine the self defense industry. Over the course of a decade, Randy grew his desire for technical expertise into a hunger to demystify the psychology of violence through evidence-based research. Randy used his growing knowledge to build K.P.C. Self Defense , a highly successful local gym that he carved out of Edmonton’s inner city. K.P.C’s mandate was (and still is) to train and empower todays most vulnerable members of society. Working alongside at-risk youth, victims of abuse, and the general population Randy’s progressive and innovative methods gave people a realistic, easy to digest set of tools to help identify conflict, the communication around conflict, and if need be, employ physical techniques to escape and evade an attack. As Randy’s reputation and influence began to grow, he wanted to shift his focus from being a local influencer to a global one by creating Randy King Live. Under this new banner, Randy began aligning and partnering with other international coaches and organizations such as Safe International , Violence Dynamics , One on One Control Tactics , and others to apply his message; as well as becoming certified in a number of key courses such as Krav Maga, Rory Millers’ Conflict Communication and ‘ Understanding Violence’ from Emory University (with distinction) . Today, Randy travels the globe, helping others who look to help themselves by focusing on his philosophy of empowerment through empathy and education. Randy’s’ character has been described by clients and colleagues as insightful, practical, personable and dedicated. His passion, charisma, and experience make him an excellent choice to train the individual or organizations in conflict identification and resolution.

“What we do in life is we solve what’s in front of us instead of what’s next.” That’s exactly how most brands have approached content marketing. The initial challenge was creating all of this content. So we focused on content creation. Now there’s too much content and people aren’t engaging with it. As CMO and Co-Founder of Uberflip, Randy Frisch helps marketers create engaging content experiences. He’s also the author of a new book with a NSFW title that we discuss on this week’s episode of the On Brand podcast. About Randy Frisch Randy Frisch is the CMO and Co-Founder of Uberflip, a content experience platform that empowers marketers to create content experiences at every stage of the buyer’s journey. He has defined and led this movement, prompting marketers to think beyond content creation and truly put their customers first by focusing on the experience. This movement has fuelled an annual conference, Conex: The Content Experience, that brings together 750+ passionate marketers, and a North American-wide Conex Tour. Randy is also a host of Conex: The Content Experience Show podcast, which was named one of the Top 50 Fearless Marketers in the world by Marketo, and is the best-selling author of F#ck Content Marketing: Focus on Content Experience (yeah, he swears sometimes). Episode Highlights Why drop the F-bomb in a book title? Randy shared the story of how the title F#ck Content Marketing first came to him. “I was getting on a plane and I just read this article that cited data from Sirius Decisions that says that 70% of the content we create goes unused.” This is a sobering statistic.  How do we get beyond just creating content? “The answer is moving to the definition of content experience.” Randy then walked us through the three key considerations: (1) Environment—where the content goes, (2) Structure—tagging to surface the right content at the right time, and (3) Engagement—how you personalize the experience.  Making your brand style guide public. As I wrote about in my book Brand Now, I’m a big fan of the Uberflip style guide. Specifically, the fact that it’s posted publicly and it’s easy to access. In fact, you can access it here. Be sure to check out the section on brand voice as it states what traits “Uberflippers” should strive for and what traits they should avoid.  Don’t take yourself too seriously. Beyond his playful book title, Randy stressed that they don’t take themselves seriously at Uberflip. Which is why you can’t miss them at trade shows. From their big pink booth to their headbands, Uberflip is all about standing out. He estimates they’ve sent out over 30,000 headbands. As Randy said, “If something’s stupid and working you should stick with it.”  What brand has made Randy smile recently? Randy shared his experience with Peloton in a way that was very relevant to our conversation on the show. On this week's episode of The Troubadour Pete and Carly visit with the frontman of one of the most successful bands with the most longevity in the Texas Country and Red Dirt scene: Randy Rogers of The Randy Rogers Band. Is there a figure in sports more admired and beloved than Muhammad Ali? Widely revered not only as one of boxing's greatest champions but also as one of the rare athletes to speak out on political issues, Ali holds a place at the pinnacle of sports heroes. In their new book Blood Brothers: The Fatal Friendship Between Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X (Basic Books, 2016), historians Randy Roberts and Johnny Smith take the bold step of viewing Muhammad Ali not as hero but as human. Randy and Johnny focus on the young contender Cassius Clay as he trains in Miami, rises through the heavyweight ranks, and hones his persona as an athlete and celebrity. At the heart of the book is the boxer's friendship with Malcolm X and their respective ties to Nation of Islam founder Elijah Muhammad. The two subjects are extraordinary figures in the history of the 1960s, and they have been subjects of several books. As Randy and Johnny explain in the interview, they offer a fresh perspective by taking a meticulous approach to sources old and new, even plotting out — day by day — where Clay and Malcolm were and what they did in the years leading up to February 1964, when Clay defeated Sonny Liston for the heavyweight title, and February 1965, when Malcolm was assassinated. This fresh perspective yields a picture of Clay/Ali somewhat at odds with the reverential view commonly held today. It is a picture of a young man still finding his place in the world, before he became its king. Learn more about your ad choices.
