Please note: in this podcast I do talk about pregnancy and preparing for baby. This week on the podcast, after a little catch up with me, I am chatting with Laura Clifford, Head of Pre-Prep at Blundell’s Preparatory School. Having studied for a Bachelor in Primary Education at Edinburgh University, Laura has worked across a range of Nurseries and Primary Schools. Laura took a short break from teaching in schools to have both her boys, (now 7 and 4) but set up her own Educational Support business for families and children within this time. She provided early learning parent workshops, private 1:1 tuition, a blog and small groups for home schooled families. She returned to school life in September 2018 when she took up the role of Head of Pre-Prep at Blundell’s Preparatory School in Tiverton, where she continues to build a thriving and hugely happy Nursery and Pre-Prep up to Year 2. Laura is dedicated to support families and children particularly at the early stages of the education journey and passionate about allowing each child to develop and grow to the best of their ability. Today Laura joins me on the podcast to talk about choosing a nursery and preparing your little one for nursery and school. We also cover all your listener questions. Topics: What age is it recommended for little ones to start nursery? Do you see a difference if they start early? What does nursery provide children? What should parents be looking for in a nursery? What happens at nursery? Can little ones nap at nursery? How to cope as a parent when leaving your little one for the first time What are your thoughts on Forest school? Listener specific questions: What sort of approaches would be expected for dealing with behaviour issues? Is it ok to take our 1 year old out of nursery for school holidays or will this unsettle her? My 9 month old boy is due to start nursery soon, v spewy baby, how many clothes to pack? If starting at 3 years old, what key things should we look out for/ show a great setting? The longer you leave it to start nursery is it harder for child to adjust? Struggle leaving Mum and Dad etc? Best thing to do to prepare your 2.5yr old? Especially after lockdown/less social contact. I have heard summer babies tend to lag behind in school as they are the younger in their year. Is this true? Also worth sending them to school a year later? 14 month old does tiny naps at nursery (2 naps). How to help - she does 4 days. I didn’t realised how long waiting lists would be. When is it best to register baby for nursery? My mother in law keeps telling us to look at a private school for my child who will be starting reception, be we have an excellent state primary on our doorstep. What are the differences? What to expect of nursery during covid? Thank you so much for listening, I will be back in a couple of weeks with a brand new mini series! Covering all things baby prep and more! Please do leave a review, subscribe and rate - it really helps other mums to find the series and be supported by our wonderful community. Love Emma x

Today Laura talks about the life history of Sandhill Cranes
“All of your worth is only as a JW” is a quote and common theme from Laura’s story of falling for a young man that was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in high school. Meeting this person at just 16 years of age would send her down an intense path of self-denial at the behest of him and others that would come into her life. Ultimately she was manipulated into doing what they wanted. For a religion that calls itself “The Truth” this story involves so many lies, the ones told to others, the ones she told to herself, and the ones told to her. The cult dynamics were seen in her relationship early on. This 16 year old girl unknowingly entered a world that would take her from her family, take years of her life, and things got even worse when she met an elder that took advantage of her. Today Laura is an educated woman pursuing things that she values in freedom. The song that Laura chose to represent her journey is Bird Set Free by Sia. In today’s episode, I’m joined by Laura Gevanter. Laura Gevanter is a PSYCH-K® Facilitator, a Conscious Alignment intuitive Coach, a workshop leader, and retreat host. She has a Psychology degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Life Coaching certification from the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching in New York City. And she has completed the Basic, Advanced and Health & Wellness PSYCH-K™ workshop trainings. Since 2006, she has been working with clients to become conscious of the interconnection between body, mind and soul. By examining the beliefs that may be limiting them, gaining clarity on what they want and then transforming those beliefs into supportive ones, many have experienced extraordinary results. Today Laura and I talk about what PSYCH-K is and the powerful transformational work that it’s used for; we talk about limiting beliefs — how to identify them and how to reprogram them; and we talk about the unique blend of science and spirituality that informs all of Laura’s work. We also talk about: How (and why) to get into a whole brain state while doing PSYCH-K The difference between Newtonian and Quantum physics — and how the latter explains more spiritual theories like the Law of Attraction How and why she uses muscle testing (in person and remotely) to determine whether a belief has truly been reprogrammed Why this work has made her so much more compassionate The sad reason that many people will live their whole lives without changing . . . and so much more. In her new book “We Are The Luckiest” Laura is raising the question “What is so lucky about being an addict?” When she entered the rooms Laura thought that everyone around her was bullshitting themselves. “They must be, without alcohol your life can’t be better.” Little did she know how much better it was about to get. Today Laura has a daughter who is safe and healthy, something she wasn’t always able to say. Today Laura is taking another step, she is no longer simply “Recovering From” she has begun the journey of “Recovering To.” In a nutshell that means looking at what else is in the way of her clarity. Examining the world around her and identifying where else might she be escaping and trading an amazing life for a novel one. Laura’s book “We Are the Luckiest” can be found wherever books are sold. This book is not just for those on a recovery path due to addictions that society hates, this book is for everyone, the shopaholic, and the netflixaholic as well. Sure, we can say “It’s not bad” but it is. You’re trading your clarity for emptiness, and if that’s is not going to be considered bad then I don’t know what would be because that’s the exact reason people yell so loud about drug and alcohol addiction. Laura and I thought we would tackle another timely topic on this week’s episode of the podcast, since by now the holiday season is well and truly in full swing. Even though it is supposed to be a time of celebration and togetherness, the reality isn’t always so cheery (and that is completely okay). Oftentimes women are expected to carry the emotional weight of the holidays and make sure everything is magical, everyone is taken care of, and all the plans fall into place. This can be especially difficult if you don’t love the holidays to begin with, but even for women who love all the festivities, it can be too big a burden to handle on your own. Today Laura and I are chatting all about the emotional load of the holidays and how we can carry less of it. It is important to tune into our feelings and needs in this period, take care of ourselves, and then connect with loved ones in the ways we want to. Join us in the Women in the Business Arena Group on Facebook - we would love to have you! For show notes & more information, check out sonyastattmann.com/listen.

Are religious Californians really harming the mental health of the LGBTQ community? That's what California lawmakers are saying to justify the recently passed ACR-99, which condemns counseling for unwanted same-sex attraction. But Dr. Laura Haynes, a California licensed psychologist for 40 years, notes that the research simply does not support that claim. She'll join me to talk it. That and more on Monday's JANET MEFFERD TODAY.

Laura Weiss never expected to be a leadership coach. Growing up she knew that she was meant to be an architect and after earning an undergraduate and masters’ degree in architecture her fate seemed all but sealed. That is until she decided to change everything less than a decade later. She had realized that while she loved architecture, it wasn’t quite for her. So she decided to follow another passion and get an MBA from MIT. She went on to find a home for herself in the emerging field of design thinking, combining her love of design and business as a consultant at IDEO for almost 10 years. Today Laura is focused on helping others navigate tricky moments in their careers and grow design leaders through her work as a professor and as a coach. More and more people are turning to professional coaches as a way to grow, transition, and find fulfillment in their work, in this episode Laura shares a bit of what it means to be a coach and what you can gain from having a coach.

How She Took Her Health Practise From Offline To Online Motherhood can be a challenging and overwhelming journey - especially if you have an online business. It's easy to shy away from talking about the changes that come, physically and mentally, after you become a mum. In addition, there's a certain stigma around these issues, so you rarely hear these changes spoken about. However, I'm never one to shy away from these types of discussions, and neither are the members in my private academy the Social Method Society. We've nurtured a community where we can be vulnerable. Honest Conversation I believe when we open the door for real, honest communication, we'll be able to reach a certain level of empowerment. We can feel confident talking about our bodies and mental health without shame or embarrassment. Laura Callea felt the same way when she realised many mothers did not know the right information when it came to safe exercise during pregnancy and preventing common pelvic floor issues. She expressed that she felt like she was limited in her ability to only help a certain number of women each week at the clinic she worked at. In her heart, Laura knew that there were so many other women out there that she needed to serve. “I felt that I had a responsibility to make sure that less and less women were coming into the clinic after birth saying, 'I wish I had known about safe exercises during my pregnancy!'.” Laura is a women’s health physiotherapist who felt the urge to create an online community to help women better understand their bodies. She started small by focussing solely on pregnancy with her online blog Physio Laura. Since then, Laura has expanded into her online pregnancy membership program, The Pregnancy Posse. Today Laura is sharing how she took her health practise from offline to online, how she niched down, and how she keeps her ego in check so that she can serve her audience. Key Takeaways: >> [5:26] Laura is a women’s health physiotherapist with a passion for helping women during pregnancy and after birth. She is motivated to empower and educate women to understand their bodies better and make informed decisions. >> [8:36] Before taking her offline business online, Laura knew she didn't want to park her ideas just because she felt afraid. >> [11:02] Laura never identified herself as an entrepreneur. Do you feel the same way? Do you identify as more of a small business owner? Well, guess what... If you creating something where there was once nothing, then you're an entrepreneur! The Stigma >> [13:18] There is a certain stigma that surrounds talking about recovery after birth, returning safely to exercise and work - even as a stay at home mum. >> [17:57] As mothers we are so focused on our babies that we put our self-care and health in second (or third or fourth!) place and don’t address common postnatal injuries or weakness until much later down the track. >> [18:38] Laura is all about helping women regain confidence in their own bodies by educating them about the physical changes that happen during pregnancy and childbirth so that they have a really good understanding about why they may be feeling the way they are. >> [22:55] Something you must keep in mind is that when you look after yourself, you're looking after your family! It's important to prioritise yourself. You can incorporate self-care and exercise into your routine without overloading your already full cup. Some examples are by doing your pelvic floor exercises whilst feeding, stretching whilst your baby plays on the floor, drinking water whilst feeding your baby, etc. >> [26:09] You are not for everyone, and everyone is not for you. This is such a powerful concept to grasp. It can be very liberating once you realise that it's okay that some people will not like you or connect with your products/offerings. On the flip-side there are just as many people who love what you are about and what you do.

Welcome to episode 159 of the Therapy Chat Podcast with host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C. Today Laura speaks with Deb Dana, LCSW about Polyvagal Theory. Deb’s work is based on the principles of Polyvagal Theory. Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, Polyvagal Theory offers a way to understand the human autonomic nervous system and directly engage with our habitual patterns of response. Through a polyvagal lens we learn to listen to our embodied stories. Using a polyvagal perspective, we can let go of self-criticism and bring an open heart to exploring the "ways and whys" of our daily experience...how we interact or isolate, join or judge, move toward or away, speak or stay silent. Welcome to episode 126 of the Therapy Chat Podcast with host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C. Today Laura speaks to Dr. Maelisa Hall about how much is too much for a therapist to share in a session? Dr. Maelisa Hall is a licensed clinical psychologist and her passion is to help therapists create rock-solid documentation so they can spend more time with their clients and less time worrying about paperwork. After eight years working in mental health agencies, she started her own company to help therapists learn how to make documentation flow naturally, decrease their workload and be confident in all their paperwork. She shows clinicians that paperwork is a valuable part of therapy and that it doesn’t have to be slow and painful! You’ll have more time to work with clients because you’ll know you can take on the paperwork no problem. Maelisa consults with psychotherapists in private practice, agencies and group practices to teach them things like how to write great notes, what to consider if insurance is involved, how to document high-risk issues and what forms they actually need for their clientele. Training is her passion so she has created online programs that help connect therapists so they can learn from any place at any time. Her goal is make everything she does serve a real need so she makes sure to include plenty of real-life examples and interactive exercises in every workshop she creates. Welcome to episode 125 of the Therapy Chat Podcast with host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C. Today Laura speaks to Dr. Loretta Pyles about her work and new book “Healing Justice”. Loretta came to mind-body healing practices in 1999, after leaving a difficult long-term relationship and becoming burnt out from her social services and social change work. She found herself anxious, grief-ridden, and disconnected from her body, mind and spirit. Over the years, she has committed herself to a journey toward wholeness, presence, and compassion. The realizations that she later found in meditation and yoga deepened her ability to understand the ways in which oppression and undigested experiences rest in the mind-body continuum. To learn more about these parts of herself and to experience life more fully, she practices a range of modalities including mindfulness, lovingkindness, breath work, physical poses, devotional mantra, group support, and self-inquiry. Loretta’s sensibility about transformative social change was formed during her time working in a women's collective at a community-based domestic violence program in Lawrence, Kansas. She continues to be inspired by the insights of collective and consensus building that come from feminist and other social movements, as well as conscious communication practices. She works with public and non-profit organizations to promote healing justice and offers workshops which support social workers and activists to embody mindful practice and self-care through trauma-informed and anti-oppression lenses. Loretta received her B.A. in philosophy and sociology from Baker University, an M.A. in philosophy from the University of Kansas and a Ph.D. in social work from the University of Kansas. Formerly on the faculty at Tulane University School of Social Work in New Orleans, Loretta is Professor in the School of Social Welfare at the State University of New York at Albany. She was Director of UAlbany’s Community and Public Service Program from 2008-2012. The National Science Foundation has funded her research on human capabilities, community participation, and disaster recovery. Loretta's social change and healing justice work has taken her across the globe including to Haiti, Mongolia, and Indonesia. Resources: http://lorettapyles.com Therapists! Welcome to episode 123 of the Therapy Chat Podcast with host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C. Today Laura speaks to Julia Alexander, LMSW, M.Ed. For the last decade, Julia has worked to create effective spaces for people to heal. She believes children’s behavior, especially behavior that appears problematic, often meets an important need. Using a compassionate and flexible treatment approach, grounded in the neurobiology of trauma, Julia aims to support children and caregivers in understanding the purpose of current behaviors in order to eventually develop more adaptive coping strategies. She knows that the most effective treatment involves a recognition of children, caregiver and system strengths and needs with a focus on connected, attuned relationships. Julia was trained by leading experts in intergroup dialogue facilitation and social justice curriculum design. She has extensive training in the Attachment, Regulation and Competency Trauma Treatment model and has attended trainings in Sensory Motor Arousal Regulation Treatment for Traumatized Children and Adolescence (SMART) as well as The Neurobiology of Trauma. Julia not only brings her clinical experience to Spirit Reina but also, a lifetime of horse experience! She loves the ways in which horses support the therapeutic process by asking us to take responsibility for the types of relationships we create. She is excited to be starting her dual certification in Natural Lifemanship. When not at Spirit Reins you can find Julia spending time exploring Austin, hanging out with her two dogs or dancing. Julia holds an MSW from Smith College School for Social Work, an M.Ed in Social Justice Education from UMass Amherst and a B.A in Psychology from Mount Holyoke College. Replay of Laura's interview with Dr. Jonathan Singer, host of the Social Work Podcast, professor at Loyola University in Chicago, and co-author of the book, "Suicide in Schools" which details how communities can address the issue of suicide. Welcome back to Therapy Chat! Today’s topic is a serious one, and something that needs to be talked about, although most of us would rather not think about it. September is Suicide Prevention & Awareness Month, and host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C recorded this special episode to honor a friend’s brother who died by suicide almost 3 years ago. Today Laura interviews someone who has worked for years in the field of suicide prevention. Jonathan B. Singer, PhD is podcaster, a social work professor at Loyola University in Chicago and one of the co-authors of the book “Suicide in Schools: A Practitioner’s Guide to Multi-Level Prevention, Assessment, Intervention and Postvention.” This book is a guide for schools and communities, as well as families, to understand what we can all do to make a difference in the problem of suicide which plagues the United States. Jonathan shares some shocking statistics about the problem of suicide – how often it happens and who is most at risk. He describes specific things schools and communities can do to prevent suicide and to support a person who is feeling suicidal. He also talks about how schools can develop crisis plans to put into action when a school community member dies by suicide. Our community has been affected by suicide far too often.
