Get ready for a heart breaking, jaw dropping, but equally uplifting episode of The Approach Shot with Tampa Bay Buccaneers center Randy Grimes. Randy tells his very personal story of being addicted to opioids, mostly so he wouldn't lose his spot on the roster. Not wanting to be "the guy who is always in the trainer's room or on the injured list" Randy did whatever it took to stay in the line-up. That included getting hooked on painkillers until the end of his career. For years after, he felt the effects, and his story is both eye opening and uplifting. Randy's book "Off Center" tells the whole story but he shares a lot with us on this episode of The Approach Shot.

I know there are a lot of schools of thought about "bottoms" within the disease of addiction. You will hear how far someone can fall in this story. As in every family, the disease also drags the family along the decline. Today Randy Grimes shares more about the progression of his pill addiction which took them all to some painful lows. I believe addiction is an equal opportunity disease, and today it is my privilege to share the beginning of my conversation with Randy Grimes, who demonstrates this. As you will hear today, Randy came from a chemical-free background, and though he started late, the disease took over his life and almost destroyed everything and everyone he loved. You NFL fans will envy me as Randy played center for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for ten years, and I got to interview him! In Randy Grimes's Book, 'Off Center," Mike Ditka says it so well in his forward, "for too many players, the medication they took to stay in on the field follows them into retirement. In September 2019, I inducted Randy Grimes into the Mike Ditka's Gridiron Greats Hall of Fame for his fight against addiction - a feat requiring as much mental toughness as playing pro ball".Please meet NFL player# 60, Randy Grimes!

This week, we are talking with Randy Grimes, Baylor University Graduate and an award-winning 10-year veteran of the NFL for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Spending nearly 20+ years battling an addiction to painkillers developed while treating career- related injuries, Randy now uses his inspiring story of recovery and his 10+ years in the addictions industry. As an Interventionist and founding advocate at Athletes In Recovery, Randy helps victims recover from drug and alcohol abuse. One of Randy's leading reasons for helping athletes recover from their substance use is due to the gripping reality of inauthenticity with injuries on the playing field. As we discuss what it's like to suffer in silence, we find that there is a huge stigma attached to athletes and how they deal with their pain. Whether it's a physical injury or mental health, athletes are often led to put on a fake face for their fans. Randy shares how easy it is to hide the pain on and off the field and what it's like to feel alone in your addiction. As Randy shares his personal story with humility and honesty, he transforms the narrative to focus on prevention, intervention, and treatment for substance use disorders and other health challenges. Join us as we dive into what led to Randy's ultimate recovery and his heart behind helping others along the way. Today I welcome Randy Grimes. Randy was an NFL player with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for ten years; while playing for the Buccaneers and to treat his football-related injuries, Randy considered painkillers to be a "necessary evil". Upon Randy's retirement from the NFL, he spent the next 20 years in the depths of addiction - losing friends, homes and almost his wife Lydia. Lydia stood by him throughout and finally got him into a treatment program that worked for Randy. Now they are giving back through their non-profit, Pro Athletes in Recovery.
A former NFL center, Randy Grimes lived as everyone's all-American—with a successful 10-year career for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a beautiful and devoted college-sweetheart-turned-wife, and two healthy children. But pain took over, and the prescription pills used to treat chronic injuries eventually led to playing in blackouts. When Randy's career ended, the pills continued—feeding an opioid addiction that would last 20+ years and erode his identity, health, and family. When addiction claimed the life of a close friend, Randy finally found the courage to raise his hand and ask for help. This single decision reclaimed Randy's life. Randy found himself having blackouts and waking up with no memory of the game he'd played that afternoon. In spite of this, he was named NFL Man of the Year for his team. After leaving the NFL, Randy's life slid further off center. Without football, he lost his identity, life playbook, and locker room family. In its place, he gained a raging addiction that lasted 20 years and stole nearly everything. Today, Randy is a motivational speaker for Tour de force Speakers and founder of Pro Athletes in Recovery, which provides resources to athletes and others to receive the help they so desperately need. Along with treatment resources, Pro Athletes in Recovery provides aftercare for those who need it.
