Whether through small gestures or grand efforts, the act of helping others creates a ripple effect that can lead to profound and lasting change. Our guest this week has one clear mission for his life: to be helpful to others.  John Bruna, M.Ed., is the Co-Founder of the Mindfulness in Recovery® Institute. He is an author, educator, counselor, and mindfulness trainer. In addition to successful careers in counseling and education, John is a former Buddhist monk with over three decades of experience working in recovery. John has presented at TEDx, Google, Facebook, and conferences throughout the United States. In this inspiring journey, John shares how the worst day of his life - losing access to his daughter due to his substance use addiction - led him down a life-long journey of self-discovery, discipline, and mindfulness. Because of the internal work - learning how to have a healthy relationship with himself and finding peace in recovery - he got his daughter back years later and became the father (and grandfather!) figure he always wanted to be.  Now, celebrating 40 years in recovery, John equips others with the tools to nurture new, positive thoughts, teaches them how to support the person they want to become, and helps them overcome negativity bias and remove suffering from their lives through mindfulness.  Topics Discussed: Learning how to have a healthy relationship with yourself first Becoming a Buddhist Monk and working alongside the Dalai lama The difference between compassion and empathy How compassion allows us to reduce long-term suffering Recognizing every encounter as an opportunity for growth How mindfulness can lead to a meaningful life Mindfulness in Recovery® Institute https://www.mindfulnessinrecovery.com/mirinstitute/   Connect with us on Social: IG: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverymd/  FB: https://www.facebook.com/groups/positiverecoverymd/ FB Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/577870242872032  TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@positiverecoverycenter  YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Additional Links:  Want to receive the daily Positive Intervention from Dr. Powers' Positive Recovery Daily Guide? What You Should Know About Overdose

Education is one of our most powerful tools, especially as we approach International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31st. In this episode, Dr. Jason Powers highlights the critical role that ongoing education plays in overdose prevention and recovery. He addresses the misconceptions and stigmas that often prevent people from seeking help or fully grasping the severity of an overdose. With this knowledge, we empower individuals to act swiftly in emergencies.  Dr. Powers also emphasizes that education goes beyond just recognizing the immediate signs and symptoms of overdose—it involves understanding the complexities of what happens during an overdose and the importance of a critical response. Tools like Narcan (naloxone) are invaluable in reversing opioid overdoses, but it's essential to be aware of both their benefits and limitations, including the potential for withdrawal symptoms after use.  Having the right tools, support, and understanding of substance use disorders and overdose, no matter the substance, can help individuals find the proper treatment and start their journey toward a healthier, substance-free life. By spreading accurate information, we can break down barriers and promote a more compassionate approach to overdose and recovery.  Topics Discussed: Understanding what happens during an overdose  Dispelling myths and misinformation behind overdose Pros and cons of Narcan and substance withdrawal The importance of continued recovery education   Connect with us on Social!  IG: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverymd/  FB: https://www.facebook.com/groups/positiverecoverymd/ TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@positiverecoverycenter  YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Additional Links:  Want to receive the daily Positive Intervention from Dr. Powers' Positive Recovery Daily Guide? Recovery Advocacy: Taking Action That Matters with Sherri Layton

It seems like every family has been affected by substance abuse in some capacity. For many of us, it's a parent, spouse, child, or even a friend who has suffered from drug or alcohol addiction. Seeing firsthand the effects of addiction, though, often encourages us to help our loved ones be a guiding light for those lost in the darkness of addiction.  Recovery advocacy is about being the voice for those who can't speak for themselves. And this is precisely what led our guests to dedicate a lifetime to fighting for the policies that ensure everyone has access to the proper treatment they need. Sherri Layton, LCDC, CCS, AADC, began working in addiction treatment in 1977. Sherri didn't initially set out to pursue recovery advocacy as her lifetime passion. But when she landed her summer job at the Houston International Hospital working on the drugs and alcohol substance unit, she instantly knew she wanted to make a difference in people's lives.   In 1992, Sherri began working for La Hacienda Treatment Center. Now, she is semi-retired, acting as the coordinator for La Hacienda's advocacy efforts, and is a powerhouse regarding recovery advice. She serves both statewide and nationally as Director of Public Policy and is Co-Chair of NAADAC's Public Policy Committee. She also serves on NAATP's Public Policy Committee and is on the Board of Directors for Texas' Association of Substance Abuse Programs.   In this conversation, Sherri and George Joseph discuss the importance of advocacy in addiction recovery, including the impact of laws like the federal parity law, the value of building relationships with legislators, and bridging the gap for new advocates and counselors. They both offer actionable insights for those interested in becoming addiction counselors or getting involved in advocacy, ultimately aiming to inspire more professionals to join and support the cause. Your past can be one of your greatest teachers. In fact, the best way to make progress is to know your starting point. For those in recovery, understanding where you come from, be it the experiences you've endured or the mistakes you may have made, plays a major role in your healing journey.  Acceptance of the past is the key to unlocking freedom in recovery. Once you've embraced your past, you're ready to take the next step toward healing and freedom. This newfound freedom allows you to shape a new life for yourself. But what does life look like after recovery treatment? In this episode, Host Dr. Jason Powers answers your questions about returning to "normal" life and offers a few quick tips for life after recovery treatment. One of the most important things is leaning into what works best for you. While many of us share similar experiences, your healing journey is specific to you.  Not every aspect of recovery may speak to you, and that's okay. As Dr. Powers shares, the best way to find sobriety and continue this path of healing is to find meaning in "healthy" distractions—not ones that turn away from challenges but ways to help you grow despite them.  Whether it's journaling, meditation, gratitude practices, gardening, learning to play a new instrument, baking, or a variety of new skills and hobbies, finding what sparks joy and healing into your life is one of the greatest rewards from sobriety! It's no secret that relationships play a pivotal role in our recovery. While building resilience starts at the heart of wanting to overcome challenges and bounce back from relapse, having a strong support system is what often guides us back to health. If resilience is a reflection of who you are at your core, then relationships act as the mirror that allows you to see your true self.  In this conversation, Dr. Powers is joined by co-host George Joseph, with special guest Dr. Robert Hilliker. Robert's extensive 20-year career in addiction and mental health is marked by his profound dedication to fostering hope within clinical settings, co-founding The Lovett Center and Ethos Behavioral Health Group. In his educational journey, from earning a Master's degree at the University of Houston to completing a Ph.D. at the Institute for Clinical Social Work in Chicago, Rober has laid the foundation for his influential roles across several renowned institutions. Notably, his collaboration with Dr. Brené Brown at The Daring Way LLC and his leadership roles at The Council on Alcohol and Drugs Houston and The Menninger Clinic highlight his significant contributions to the field. Currently, as the Chief Clinical Officer of Ethos Behavioral Health Group, he continues to shape the future of mental health care. Innovation in clinical practice and education forms a cornerstone of Robert's work, evidenced by his Pilgrimage curriculum and Logos Groups, which reimagine treatment and community-based therapy. His commitment extends to teaching psychiatry residents at The University of Texas McGovern Medical School and leading groups at the Baylor College of Medicine. Recognized for his integrity and impact on the field with awards from the Menninger Clinic and the Houston Business Journal, Robert's life in Houston with his family mirrors his professional ethos, blending care, dedication, and a vision for transformative mental health practices. Let's talk about whole health. While there isn't a "one-size-fits-all" approach to health, incorporating a healthy balance of mental, physical, and spiritual well-being is guaranteed to jumpstart your health journey. No matter what this looks like for you, whether you prefer a more protein vs. plant-based diet, hitting it hard at the gym vs. walking your dog around the neighborhood, or yoga and meditation vs. journaling and prayer, the three pillars of health - mind, body, and soul - are essential to not just your recovery journey, but your overall health and wellness.  In this episode, you'll get an inside look into Dr. Powers's daily habits, which have guided him to the healthiest version of himself yet. Dr. Powers shares how he found emotional balance when he first started his yoga journey, the many benefits of daily sauna time, and how meditation led him to observe negative thought patterns objectively and toward a journey of self-acceptance.  Building on these foundations, Dr. Powers also discusses the role of community and support systems in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, highlighting how connection with others can provide motivation, accountability, and a sense of belonging. When you surround yourself with others on a similar journey, you create an enriching experience that everyone can benefit from.  Topics Discussed: Emphasizing self-acceptance as a foundation for progress  How physical balance can shape your emotional balance Focusing on an enriching diet & daily exercise for healthy living Meditation's role in overcoming negative mental patterns  Why social connections are your best resource for personal growth Connect with us on Social! Addiction. Sobriety. Relapse. Shame… repeat. Sound familiar? If you're caught in the throes of addiction, odds are you've been here before. For many of us, the shame cycle keeps us locked in our addiction. The problem with shame is that it warps our understanding of guilt and takes it a step further by making us feel like we're a bad person rather than simply making a bad decision. But we want to remind you that there is a way out. There is a path toward healing. In this conversation, Dr. Powers is once again joined by George Joseph, CEO of Positive Recovery Centers, as they discuss the importance of continued treatment on the recovery journey, why relapse doesn't mean you're broken, and the personal growth it takes in asking for help.  The biggest takeaway from this powerful conversation? That you're not alone in this journey and that there are people willing to lend a helping hand because they've been there. You're not too far gone, and you're not broken - your disease of addiction just makes you think you are. There is hope, and there is freedom on the other side of sobriety.  If you're ready to break the shame cycle, then this episode is for you! Struggling with addiction can often leave us feeling unworthy of love, isolated on a path marred by our past mistakes. However, this perception couldn't be more misguided. The reality is that no matter our past actions or who we were, embarking on a journey toward self-love can be the most transformative experience.  In this official Season 2 launch of Positive Recovery MD, we're thrilled to welcome back George Joseph, CEO of Positive Recovery Centers, alongside our host, Dr. Jason Powers. As they discuss the critical choice of self-love and compassion over the burdens of shame and guilt, Dr. Powers shares a powerful message that for people with an addiction, it's about the journey of feeling worthy enough for self-love and to be able to accept love. While self-love may be the hardest challenge we've yet faced and the hardest thing to ask of others, George reminds us that love is a profound healer. Love grants us the strength to forgive ourselves, surpass our self-imposed limitations, and forge meaningful connections with others. True or false: Positive feelings towards aging can increase your life by up to 8 years longer. Our guest from Wyoming is practically shouting from the rooftops, "IT'S TRUE!". If you blame things on your age and feel diminished in your daily living, it can literally shorten your life. The secret to embracing getting older? Surrounding yourself with solid relationships, practicing gratitude, and admiring the modern miracles of life.   Deborah Healy Hammons, Consultant, Creative Writer, former PBS TV Producer, and former Minority Whip for the Wyoming House of Representatives, has a knack for seeing beauty all around her, even in mundane tasks. In our conversation, Deborah likened driving in rush-hour traffic to seeing a flock of birds communicating in sync. We may all have our own responsibilities and meetings to attend, we're all genuinely heading in the same direction, same flow of traffic.    She even shares her love for having a real, live person helping her check out at the grocery store over scanning at the self-checkout line because it allows her to bond with the person standing before her. When people generally try to avoid such arduous tasks, Deborah fully embraces them.    When it comes to living happier, more fulfilling lives, Deborah shares that appreciating the world's beauty allows us to cultivate a positive mindset and embrace the joy of living in the moment. You can wake up feeling guilt-free, cherish the memories from the night before, and there's no dreaded hangover.    Looking to ring in the New Year and begin 2023 on the right foot? Then you're in for a real treat as our guests, Sarah Bolton and Bree Brown, Co-Founders of Sober Eve, Houston's ONLY Soper Pop-Up Night Club, share with us how to embrace New Year's Eve without the temptation of champagne being passed to you at midnight.    Bree Brown, Director of Business Development for Cypress Lakes Lodge and Co-Founder of Sober Eve, has worked in the behavioral health industry since 2015. Spending nearly 20+ years battling an addiction to painkillers developed while treating career- related injuries, Randy now uses his inspiring story of recovery and his 10+ years in the addictions industry. As an Interventionist and founding advocate at Athletes In Recovery,  Randy helps victims recover from drug and alcohol abuse.   One of Randy's leading reasons for helping athletes recover from their substance use is due to the gripping reality of inauthenticity with injuries on the playing field. As we discuss what it's like to suffer in silence, we find that there is a huge stigma attached to athletes and how they deal with their pain. Whether it's a physical injury or mental health, athletes are often led to put on a fake face for their fans.    Randy shares how easy it is to hide the pain on and off the field and what it's like to feel alone in your addiction. This week, Dr. Jason Powers is joined by Stephen Cochran, Principal and Owner of Cochran Design Studio. For Stephen, a series of tumultuous events in his teen years set off the addictive gene that sent him spinning into chaos.    At age 14, Stephen's mother committed suicide, and at age 16, Stephen got married and had a child. And one year later, his younger brother died in a car crash. Shortly thereafter, Stephen's wife filed for divorced and left him with his daughter. Stephen's solution to these events and everything else was alcohol and drugs, which, as you may guess, was a disaster.    In 1990, Stephen got clean and stayed sober for five years, in which he got an education in Architecture and built a life with his new wife and daughter. Unfortunately, ego and lack of diligence took Stephen out for ten years of scorched earth. After a series of jails, institutions, and yes, death on October 4, 2005, Stephen crawled out of the soul-sucking madness. Stephen started the recovery process, and today his life is joyously centered around sobriety and family.   Dr. Powers and Stephen discuss accepting people where they are at and how group therapy is a mirror to our soul, as well as the blessing of recovery and the gift of a second chance.    Topics Discussed:   Learning to identify emotions and make connections The most surprising thing learned in recovery  Empathy as the connecting factor in relationships Gratitude: staying grounded and loving life   Connect with Stephen Cochran:   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stephen.cochran.5  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/steviethesaint/ Connect with Positive Recovery MD Podcast:   Website: https://www.positiverecoverymd.com  Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/577870242872032  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg    Connect with Positive Recovery Centers Online:   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/positiverecoverycenters/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/positiverecoverycenters/    Contact Positive Recovery Centers:   If you or someone you know needs help, visit the website, or call the number below to schedule an assessment. This week, Dr. Jason Powers and Julie DeNofa are joined by Peter Maldonado, a Houston Clinical Outreach Representative at Discovery Behavioral Health.   Peter is in long-term recovery and hasn't had a drink or a drug since May 2, 2020. Although he was born in a small town in East Texas, Peter was always attracted to city life. Ironically, Peter was sent to a treatment center in Austin, Texas, where his recovery journey started. Austin is also where his career in Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder began.    Peter has worked in the field since October of 2009 and has been a part of two startup treatment centers. And he has also helped develop the recovery specialist program at Nova Recovery Center. Through his experience, Peter learned to be open-minded and listen to struggling individuals to understand better how he can support them in their journeys.    Although Peter's approach to recovery is blunt and honest, he is also very compassionate. He loves to see people progress and grow in their journey, but he also understands that the recovery journey isn't linear.    Topics Discussed: The power of showing up and overcoming Imposter Syndrome How Mentorship increases our chances of Long-Term Recovery Differentiating between Personal Recovery and a Career in Recovery The Keys for Long-Lasting Recovery  Respecting the “Disease of Addiction” and recognizing a person's humanity Finding Identity through the Yoga Community    Connect with Peter Maldonado:   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/peter.maldonado2  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/txsoberyogi/ Connect with Positive Recovery MD Podcast:   Website: https://www.positiverecoverymd.com  Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/577870242872032  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg    Connect with Positive Recovery Centers Online:   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/positiverecoverycenters/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/positiverecoverycenters/    Contact Positive Recovery Centers:   If you or someone you know needs help, visit the website, or call the number below to schedule an assessment.
