Have you heard about DWG's new programme to help digital workplace leaders future-proof their organizations? In this episode of Digital Workplace Impact, Paul Miller, DWG's Chairman and Founder, stops by to talk with host, Nancy Goebel. He shares more about the new kick-start programme aimed at helping leaders to go from ‘baseline to breakthrough' – and then beyond. As part of a new series of ‘Vantage Point' events, DWG will host two 90-minute online sessions, on October 23 and November 20. These will take leaders through how to baseline where an organization's digital workplace is really at, as a springboard for the future. And this also ties in with a new benchmarking product focused on AI, due to launch later this month. In this conversation, Paul discusses the importance of designing the future before it designs you. He muses that the digital workplace post-pandemic is in a state rather akin to the Leaning Tower of Pisa: standing up but in need of some maintenance and alignment! But is it tilting towards the future or the past? So, join Nancy and Paul for a lively conversation on what's next from DWG around helping organizations to design their own future. This episode features an interview with Rachel Happe, Founder and Digital Workplace, Organization, and Community Strategist at Engaged Organizations. She started Engaged Organizations to focus on helping organizations adapt to new technologies and accelerate knowledge supply chains while improving trust, transparency, and agility. She is a sought after speaker and expert on the impact of technology on engagement, relationships, and culture and has keynoted at several digital workplace conferences. In this episode, Shawn and Rachel discuss treating employees as assets rather than machines, rewarding human contributions, and valuing emotional and social aspects in the workplace.-------------------“We still have this mechanistic system and the human system, and we're still treating humans like machines. I wrote a post a while back, because I was getting really annoyed reading about how AI could help employees. It was all like, ‘It can do these 10 tasks for you.' And I'm like, ‘If that's all we are, we should go home.' It's the mindset of what we think employees or people's value is. The example I use in presentations is diamonds. Why are diamonds valuable? They're rocks. De Beers made them mean something. You know who can't make something mean something to somebody else? AI. The value of people is activating other people. And value is meaning.” – Rachel Happe-------------------Episode Timestamps:*(02:20): Getting to know Rachel*(10:27): Rachel's career background*(15:42): Employees are not machines*(21:50): How to calculate the value of community*(32:21): The role of AI in community *(42:39): The current and future state of valuing humans-------------------Links:Connect with Rachel on LinkedInLearn more about Engaged OrganizationsEmail RachelRead Ed Zitron's They're Looting The InternetConnect with Shawn on LinkedInCohesion Podcast

In the latest episode of the "Remotely One" podcast, Jeff Walpole, CEO of Phase2, joins hosts Rick and Kaleem for an engaging chat about the evolution and future of remote and hybrid work environments. The entertaining exchange delves into Jeff's extensive experience managing hybrid teams and offers valuable lessons for organizations navigating these new work paradigms.Jeff's career spans from working on IT projects for the U.S. Navy, EPA, and Department of Defense, to leading Phase2, a digital agency he co-founded in 2001. His background as a musician in a heavy metal hair band named "Without Warning" adds an intriguing twist to his professional journey, sparking nostalgic banter about 80s rock fashion and music icons like Dio and Ratt.Starting Phase2 shortly after September 11, 2001, Jeff and his co-founders initially worked on-site at the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), developing a system for calculating the NFL salary cap. Their early adoption of remote and flexible work practices, including holding meetings in a Starbucks conference room, laid the groundwork for their future operations.Phase2 has since grown into a leading digital agency, delivering large-scale, custom software solutions for clients like Fannie Mae, Johnson & Johnson, and the Smithsonian! For remote enthusiasts, the trio deeply explore Phase2's transition to remote-first operations. Originally having a significant office presence, the company gradually reduced office space in response to the rise of remote work, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, their Arlington headquarters is mostly empty, reflecting a strategic shift to accommodate diverse work preferences.By fostering a culture that values flexibility, purposeful meetings, and strong client relationships, Phase2 has successfully navigated the challenges of remote work while continuing to innovate in the digital space. Through action, Phase2 underscores the importance of intentionality in remote work! The pandemic was a turning point, forcing everyone to experience remote work and fostering greater empathy for remote team members. This universal shift helped overcome the final barriers to a more inclusive hybrid work culture. Phase2 even created the "Phase2 Remote Work Playbook," a resource made freely available during the pandemic. This playbook, drawing from their long history with remote work, offered technical tips and cultural advice for effective remote meetings, helping other companies navigate the sudden shift to remote work. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the practicalities and philosophies of managing hybrid and remote work environments. This episode features an interview with Shaelyn Otikor, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Digital Workplace Strategy at Northern Trust in the Asset Servicing business unit. Shaelyn has been with Northern Trust for over 28 years. And in her current role, she's heading 15,000 of Northern Trust's over 25,000 employees across 20 countries. And today, our host Nicole Alvino is talking with Shaelyn about re-engineering digital employee processes for greater efficiency, empowering employees to drive their own career at Northern Trust. and not being afraid to get in the weeds.Quotes*”As we think about digital employee experience, we have to build out various personas based on the regions, the roles, and the groups, and then try to address digital employee experience based on those personas and what the group of individual employees are working on.”*”As a financial services firm, we're not exactly sexy out there. It's not something everyone's really trying to get into in this day and era. So, we definitely want to show employees that we are on the cusp of FinTech - we are both financial and technology - and that there are places at our company, capabilities and tools where they can hone that skill set, and they don't need to leave to go to a technology company. So when we onboard new employees, we want to introduce them to the freshest, the coolest, the savviest tools we have out there.”*”My goal is always to match the internal employee experience to their external experience. They have all the cool apps, social media, they know how to fly. But then they come into the office and we're still kind of highly regulated. We're on old archaic systems, legacy and infrastructure, and it can be a bit frustrating to new employees. So it's nice to have this space that we can expand it to anyone interested, anyone who wants to learn the skill or develop it and give them these opportunities to grow their career at Northern Trust.”Time Stamps[1:02] Meet Shaelyn Otikor, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Digital Workplace Strategy at Northern Trust in the Asset Servicing business unit[2:59] The Power of Personalized Digital Employee Experiences[9:18] Leveraging Data for Enhanced Client and Employee Interactions[13:53] The Impact of Digital Transformation on Employee Onboarding and Engagement[18:33] Shaelyn's Personal Journey and Leadership Philosophy[27:37] Finding Clarity and Inspiration: Shaelyn's Personal Space[29:36] Shaelyn's Life MantrasLinksConnect with Shaelyn on LinkedInLearn more about Northern TrustThanks to our friendsThis episode is brought to you by Firstup, the world's first intelligent communication platform. Calvin Newport is a computer science professor at Georgetown University and the author of, among other books, 'Deep Work' and 'A World Without Email.' At the heart of so much of Newport's work is this incredibly rich mystery: Why hasn't the internet produced more geniuses? One possibility is that the productivity tools ironically inhibit our productivity. The average white-collar worker in marketing, advertising, finance, and media now spends up to 60 percent of the workweek engaged in electronic communication. In a recent survey, Microsoft found that video meetings had taken up so much of the day that a significant share of its workforce was logging online between 9 and 10 p.m. to finish their actual non-email, non-meeting work. In response to this relentless need to loop back and back and back, Newport came up with what he called the Deep Work Hypothesis: He said to learn hard things quickly, you must focus intensely without distraction. But the ability to perform this kind of deep focused work is becoming rare at exactly the same time it is becoming most valuable in our economy. In this conversation, we talk about deep work and shallow work, how our productivity tools make us less productive, and how to actually get things done. In the past 20 years, DWG has completed more than 700 benchmarks – both of intranet and digital workplaces – in each case providing insights for organizations to wanting to take the next step in achieving their ambitions. In this episode of Digital Workplace Impact, DWG's benchmarking architect and lead benchmarking evaluator, Chris Tubb, helps to uncover the mysteries of all things benchmarking. What's the DWG model? Delivering a digital workplace that works for multiple teams, in multiple locations, all with different end goals is challenging to say the least. But sometimes it comes down to communications and training as much as it does to the tools themselves. In this special episode of Get Reworked, recorded live at the J.W. Marriot in Austin, Texas during the Reworked CONNECT conference, Dante Ragazzo, senior director, digital workplace at Tapestry discusses the work he's doing to simplify and remove friction from the digital workplace at Tapestry. "So I think that if you are not only improving your experience, but showing that you're improving your experience, I think it goes a long way toward employees. I think employees are actually really forgiving, and they understand what's different when you're a consumer. 'Well, you want to get my money. So you should do everything you can to impress me.' "When you're the employee, it's like, 'Well, the more money you spend on other niceties to make me feel good is less money that we have to invest in our business, bonuses and everything else.' So I think employees have a certain understanding like they don't want to just see the coffers wide open and spending frivolously," said Dante. Highlights of the conversation include: What causes some of the digital friction The many definitions of the digital workplace How he approaches shadow IT How to balance diverse team needs with the desire to create a cohesive digital workplace The digital workplace discovery tour he now runs at Tapestry Plus, co-hosts Kate Cox and Siobhan Fagan talk with Dante about the differences between customer experience and employee experience, how we can't live in a magic kingdom, and why sometimes you have to accept that good enough is good enough. Whether your company is fully remote, fully in-person, or somewhere in-between, work in 2023 (and beyond) will require healthy and robust digital ecosystems—because that's where so much work takes place day in and day out. Still, wanting a first-rate digital-first workplace and having one are two different things—and there's no one-size-fits-all roadmap to follow. Every team has different needs, so we can expect different journeys. But that doesn't mean we can't learn from each other. In this episode, Aaron and Rodney reflect on The Ready's early years (hat tip to Panera for providing O.G. office space), sharing advice and learnings from the growing pains of yesteryear. Then, as part of our partnership with Slack, they sit down with Kelsey Stevenson, Chief Product Officer at Bitly, to talk about how the growing company is evolving its own digital-first workplace and the experiments they're running to build trust, culture, collaboration—and a very active pets channel in Slack. The pandemic has changed all the rules of work - they were actually evolving for a while, but COVID accelerated those changes, which left many leaders scrambling. How do we make hybrid work, digital work, remote work WORK for your organization? So many leaders are being thrown into uncharted waters. You may be confused, fearful, angry, stubborn, or unsure about how to make hybrid work, or if your team can perform in such an environment.Today, my guest, Neil Miller, and I chat about what hybrid work actually is and where it's going. We discuss the real meaning of culture and how you replicate it when your team is distributed or remote - Neil shares some powerful strategies on how you can co-create the rules with your team so your work experiences are equitable and inclusive. We discuss the role of empathy in the hybrid workplace - not just for employees but for leaders who are unsure how to navigate this new reality. We joked about how so many companies misunderstand what "culture" really means - and why the old way of thinking about it won't serve them in this new environment. And Neil invites you to think through when in-person is worth it so you maximize those opportunities and get other work done remotely. Key Takeaways:While many studies are showing that people are more productive when working from home, it is not the right fit for every person. Culture is how we treat each other and how we get work done. It is more than just people being in the same place at the same time. In order to solve the complex problems of our day, collaboration is essential. Meetings are great. They do a lot, but they don't have to do everything for you. You don't have to rely on them for every type of collaboration you do. "Culture is how we work, how we do meetings, how we do everything.
