As my children get older I realize more and more that our time with them is limited. Just the other day I saw a photo of a peaceful spot my daughter and I used to go - and there instead were her and her friends together.  It is during these moments I reflect on my mother and the times I shared with her and I give thanks for having such a great role model of being a mom, knowing when to cherish the times, and when to let go and watch your child(ren) fly.Today on Holly's Highlights podcast we will look at 4 tips on embracing hope through the heartaches of motherhood. From the discouragements and watching our children face consequences in life, to the important role we play and enjoying each season we find ourselves in with our kiddos, we'll learn:1. that it's worth it2. not to take full credit, nor all the blame3. the importance of being their parent4. intentionally being in the momentOur children spreading their wings and flying is perfectly normal and healthy. No matter the stage of life they are in may we always choose to embrace hope through the heartaches of motherhood. For more on this topic I highly recommend the following resources:Babywise books for new momsHomebuilders parenting series for those with school aged children (this makes a great small group study too)Family Camp at Glorieta in New Mexico (mention Holly's Highlights podcast to inquire about a first time discount)And then of course here on Holly's highlights podcast check out:Season 2 episode 12 - Hey Mommas happy Mother's DaySeason 2 episode 14 - Lessons learned from my dadSeason 2 episode 29 - Parenting Kids' Screen TimeSeason 3 episode 15 - How to create a family mission statementSeason 3 episode 26 - How to give the gift of being in the presentSupport the showVisit www.hollycurby.com for more information and to sign up for the monthly Holly's Happenings e-newsletter.

When did "parenting" become a verb? Why is it so hard to parent, and so rife with the possibility of failure? Sitcom families of the past--the Cleavers, the Bradys, the Conners--didn't seem to lose any sleep about their parenting methods. Today, parents are likely to be up late, doomscrolling on parenting websites. In Long Days, Short Years: A Cultural History of Modern Parenting (MIT Press, 2022), Andrew Bomback--physician, writer, and father of three young children--looks at why it can be so much fun to be a parent but, at the same time, so frustrating and difficult to parent. It's not a "how to" book (although Bomback has read plenty of these) but a "how come" book, investigating the emergence of an immersive, all-in approach to raising children that has made parenting a competitive (and often not very enjoyable) sport. Drawing on parenting books, mommy blogs, and historical accounts of parental duties as well as novels, films, podcasts, television shows, and his own experiences as a parent, Bomback charts the cultural history of parenting as a skill to be mastered, from the laid-back Dr. Spock's 1950s childcare bible--in some years outsold only by the actual Bible--to the more rigid training schedules of Babywise. Along the way, he considers the high costs of commercialized parenting (from the babymoon on), the pressure on mothers to have it all (and do it all), scripted parenting as laid out in How to Talk So Kids Will Listen, parenting during a pandemic, and much more. Do you remember all the questions you asked the pediatrician about your first child?   I remember one particular appointment when my daughter was about six weeks old.  I showed up at the doctor’s office with a list so long it barely fit in my SUV. The questions seem silly now, but I asked things like: How do I know when to change diaper sizes? (Duh, when the others don’t fit). And how do I know if the crib bedding is overstimulating her? (Thanks a lot, Babywise).   Bless my heart, and thank goodness for patient pediatricians.   Today we have the chance to collectively ask our medical questions to Dr. Hillary Lewis.  Dr. Lewis is a pediatrician in Dallas who loves the Lord and is raising three kids of her own.   Much like the litany of questions I asked all those years ago of my pediatrician, I’m bombarding her with some of our most common medical questions when it comes to our kids (and not how to determine diaper-sizing).   We covered topics like:  Physical concerns of COVID  The emotional toll of COVID Acne from masks The COVID vaccine and its implications for our kids Thoughts on the Gardasil vaccine The age we can begin to see signs of ADD/ADHD Balancing faith and science in our families  I took one for the team and tried to ask the questions we’ve all been wondering about but haven’t actually voiced. Praying it’s as helpful to you as it was for me!

In this episode Sarah sits down solo and shares all the details of how she sleep trained all of her children. It's an informative and honest look into her journey thus far and how the method she used has resulted in 3 fabulous sleepers (ages 3, 5 and 7 at recording time). All of her children go to bed at 7pm and sleep throughout the night on their own. They stay in their beds once it's time to go bed and have never "tested" them as many little ones do. Sarah opens the show with words of encouragement and sharing her opinion that it's never too late to sleep train and correct bad habits. She shares her belief that sleep is a critical component to the peacefulness in her home and the priority it is to her and her husband. She discusses how many things in parenting are trial and error and that sleep training is no different. She hopes her story encourages the listener and motivates them to discover what will work for their family! The 3 books referenced throughout the show are: On Becoming Babywise (aka Babywise) by Gary Ezzo, Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child by Marc Weissbluth and The Wonder Weeks Frans X. Plooij and Hetty van de Rijt. The website that Sarah references as a great sleep resource is www.babywisemom.com. At the beginning of the show, Sarah starts off by giving a background on herself, her personality and painting the picture of where she was in her life when she embarked on sleep training for the first time. She discuses how she chose Babywise over Attachment Parenting and then how she set out implanting it with her first child. In the second half of the show, Sarah walks through her very top tips on how to be successful in sleep training... Or in other words, what you need to do as the parent before you embark on the journey. These tips will help you to "get your mind right" to better prepare you for the rough days (because there will be rough days!). Thanks so much for tuning in! Sarah will be back with Lauren on Monday! Rachel from over at the blog titled My Baby Sleep Guide is the winner of the latest (2012) edition of On Becoming Babywise. Speaking of Babywise, there is a new Nap App available for the iPhone from PocketParenting.com. This app has been developed by the same folks that publish On Becoming Babywise. There are demo videos and screenshots on the web site.   Asking your child for Forgiveness and Make it Right Asking your child to forgive you for something you did to hurt them is hard. If you are a headstrong natural born alpha male leader type, it can be extremely more difficult to master this process. It takes an extra degree of humility. I recently embarrassed my nine year old son Riley. I raised my voice to him in front of some neighborhood kids. A few minutes later Riley let me know (respectfully) that he had been embarrassed by my tone. I was still hot and sent him to his room so that I could cool off. After I cooled off I went up to Riley’s room and sat on the bed next to him. I asked him if he would forgive me for embarrassing him in front of his friends by raising my voice. He said yes and gave me a big hug. This about where things end for how most people deal with forgiveness. Our friends Gary and Anne Marie Ezzo taught us better in Growing Kids God’s Way. They teach that when wrong is done and forgiveness is asked for an give, there is still a need to restore the relationship. Then I asked Riley how I could make it right with him. Many people apologize or say they are sorry. Very few ever ask how they can make things right. By making things right I mean that we should try to restore the relationship.
