Pediatrician and bestselling author Dr. Golly (aka Dr. Daniel Golshevsky) joins me this week to help new parents make sense of the early weeks with a newborn and feel more grounded, confident, and connected along the way. Together we explore: - How to understand newborn behavior and cues so you can respond with more confidence. - What really matters in the first four weeks — and what you can let go of. - Why some babies struggle to settle, and how to support their developing nervous system. - How to create flexible, supportive routines without slipping into rigidity or pressure. - The powerful role of partners and non-breastfeeding caregivers in bonding and soothing. - How parents can tune out the noise, trust their instincts, and feel less overwhelmed by conflicting advice. Whether you're navigating confusing cues, unpredictable sleep, feeding challenges, colic, or the general overwhelm of early parenthood, this episode offers clarity and reassurance during one of the most intense transitions of your life. Pediatrician Dr. Caity Gilman joins me this week to unpack breath-holding spells, those frightening moments when a child turns blue or pale, goes limp, or briefly loses consciousness during intense emotion or dysregulation or pain. Together we explore: - The two types of breath-holding spells and what triggers each of them. - Are certain children more prone to these episodes based on genetics, temperament, or other factors? - What should parents do in the moment to keep their child safe, and how to know when it's time to call their pediatrician. - What parents can do after a spell to comfort their child. - Do these spells cause any long-term harm, or are they truly benign? - How to support your child's emotion regulation and frustration tolerance between episodes. If you're currently navigating breath-holding spells, or you simply want to feel more prepared for the unexpected moments that come with raising little ones, this episode offers clarity, reassurance, and practical guidance from both a pediatrician and a fellow parent who has lived this experience firsthand. Here's a simple parenting tip– take some time to relax with your boy. Pediatrician Dr. Meg Meeker says that most parents don't realize the importance of “doing nothing” with sons. Even if you only have ten minutes, invite your son to sit down on the front porch with you with his favorite snack or drink. Don't badger him with questions, check your phone, or start lecturing. Simply sit together. Dr. Meeker says this is important for several reasons. It communicates that rest is an important part of life. It shows your son that he's worthy of undivided attention. And it's also an excellent way to get your boy to start communicating his thoughts and feelings. All of those benefits– and you get a short break, too. What does it take to grow confident, successful kids?To grow successfully, kids need a good foundation, nourishment and a lot of care—kind of like a garden. So when Tampa community activists Jeanette Bradley and Diana Kyle wanted to positively impact local schools, they decided to get their hands dirty. In 2018, the two founded SEEDFOLKids After School Garden Experience. The free program is the signature initiative of Bradley's nonprofit organization What We Could Be Exchange.SEEDFOLKids combines hands-on gardening with real-world learning in agriscience, sustainability, entrepreneurship and teamwork. Throughout the school year, third and fourth grade participants grow edible plants in raised beds, participate in food system-related field trips and guest-led workshops, and host school events like SEEDFOLKids Market Day, when they sell the fruits—and veggies and herbs—of their labor. Along the way, they develop confidence, leadership skills and a deeper connection to the food they eat and the environment around them. Several Tampa schools have hosted SEEDFOLKids programs. The very first was Edison Elementary Community School, where the program is still going strong. Shortly before the end of the 2024-25 school year, the Zest team visited Edison to chat with the students and adults who are the heartbeat of the program. To see a video tour of the SEEDFOLKids garden beds at Edison, visit the Zest's page on Facebook or Instagram.Related episodes:Pediatrician Dr. David Berger on School Lunches & Ultra-Processed FoodsPlant-Powered Education: Solid Rock Community School in Tarpon Springs Offers 100% Vegan Cafeteria Menu10 Tips for Cooking with Kids

According to the Associated Press, a federally funded vaccine awareness study focused on a Black Denver community was abruptly canceled by the Trump administration before researchers could analyze its results. Pediatrician Dr. Joshua Williams led the project, which featured videos of local families sharing flu shot experiences to build trust and counter vaccine hesitancy. After two years of community collaboration, the program had just begun sending videos via text to 200 families when funding was pulled. Community members and health experts condemned the cancellation, calling it a setback for public health and equity. Community adviser Chantyl Busby said, “It sends a horrible message.” With flu, measles, and whooping cough rising, doctors say this work is more urgent than ever. Pediatrician Dr. Caity Gilman is here to shed light on the facts surrounding vaccines and address common concerns and questions she hears most often from parents in her practice, like: - Does the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine cause autism? (Spoiler: No, vaccines do not cause autism.) - Do I need to vaccinate my child based on my pediatrician's suggested schedule? - What are the risks of stopping administering vaccines to children? - If vaccines are so good, why don't we have them for more things, like the common cold? - Is it really necessary to get a flu shot every year? - Are people given the actual disease when they get a vaccine? If so, then why not just get the illness itself and let my immune system learn to fight it? - Should you give your baby Tylenol before a vaccine so the shot hurts less? If you've ever had questions or felt unsure about vaccines, this episode is packed with helpful, expert-driven insights. Dr. Gilman's thoughtful, research-backed approach is sure to leave you feeling more informed and empowered! Christopher Gregor, now on trial, is charged in the death of his 6-year-old son Corey Micciolo. Gregor took his son to the hospital saying he put his son down for a nap because he was sleepy and nauseous. When Corey woke up he was stumbling, slurring his words, and having trouble breathing. Corey died at the hospital. Surveillance video inside the gym facility at the complex where Gregor lived shows Corey running on a treadmill while Gregor turns up the speed and incline of the machine until the 6-year-old can't keep up and falls off. Gregor lifts the boy off the ground by his shirt, holding Corey over the running treadmill. Corey's feet slide out from under him several times as he tries to get his footing, and Gregor appears to bite Corey on the back of the head. Corey eventually starts running again and falls from the treadmill five more times before Gregor shuts it off and they leave together. Corey's mother, Breanna Micciolo testified that she feared for Corey's life. Documentation shows she made more than 100 calls and emails to the Department of Child Protection reporting abuse. Pediatrician Dr. Nancy Deacon who treated Corey days before his death, testified to what she observed. Deacon listed a blue-grey bruise on his left cheek, a large yellow-green bruise on his left shoulder, another large yellow-green bruise on his left inner arm, and a blue bruise present on his elbow. Beyond over 12 bruises that covered Corey Micciolo's body, the doctor noted two areas on the right side of his chest, she called it two areas of hyper-pigmented skin, meaning the wound was healing but pigment had not yet returned.
