Pediatrician Dr. Caity Gilman is here to shed light on the facts surrounding vaccines and address common concerns and questions she hears most often from parents in her practice, like: - Does the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine cause autism? (Spoiler: No, vaccines do not cause autism.) - Do I need to vaccinate my child based on my pediatrician's suggested schedule? - What are the risks of stopping administering vaccines to children? - If vaccines are so good, why don't we have them for more things, like the common cold? - Is it really necessary to get a flu shot every year? - Are people given the actual disease when they get a vaccine? If so, then why not just get the illness itself and let my immune system learn to fight it? - Should you give your baby Tylenol before a vaccine so the shot hurts less? If you've ever had questions or felt unsure about vaccines, this episode is packed with helpful, expert-driven insights. Dr. Gilman's thoughtful, research-backed approach is sure to leave you feeling more informed and empowered! “Mindfulness is one of the most important life skills we can give to our teenagers.” - Dr. Elisa SongOur kids are under stress more so now than ever before. Their easy access to smartphones and social media also means they have fewer opportunities to blow off steam with simple activities like hanging out, chatting with friends, or riding a bike to a neighbor's house.Like anything else, kids need to learn how to make better choices, just as they have to learn to do everything else they will eventually need to do on their own. As parents, grandparents, and caregivers, the best thing we can do for them is empower them with tools and strategies they can use to increase their resilience and improve their health without feeling disconnected from their peers. Today, I'm thrilled to be joined by Dr. Elisa Song to talk about her book, Healthy Kids, Happy Kids. Dr. Elisa teaches a wide range of tools, from nourishment, movement, and mindfulness to nervous system regulation - strategies that benefit us and our kids. When we get better at them ourselves, we are better equipped to share a skill set for good health that will grow with our children as they do.In this conversation, Dr. Elisa and I discuss her insights on pediatric health, the gut microbiome's role in children's well-being, the impact of diet, lifestyle, and technology on children's health, strategies for supporting kids with long COVID, the need for improved stress resilience, practical advice for fostering children's physical and emotional health, and more.Enjoy the episode, and let's innovate and integrate together!Learn more or watch the video version of this conversation at https://integrativewomenshealthinstitute.com/supporting-teen-immune-and-mental-health-with-holistic-pediatrician-dr-elisa-song/.Connect with me and access our entire platform at IntegrativeWomensHealthInstitute.com (https://integrativewomenshealthinstitute.com/). How do you talk to your son? When Cynthia's son was little, she frequently called him pet names, like “Bubs.” One day, when her son was twelve, he said “Please don't call me that anymore.” Cynthia was surprised, but then later, she understood. Her son was becoming a man, and wanted to be treated as such. Follow Cynthia's lead– when your son becomes a preteen, drop any childlike nicknames and begin to refer to him as a young man, not a boy. Pediatrician Dr. Meg Meeker also suggests using phrases such as “I like the way you think” and “You sure are a good brother.” Affirm who your son is, rather than what he does, and you will build him up even more than you realize. You're listening to Voices of Your Village and today I get to hang out with Dr. Mona Amin. She is a board -certified general pediatrician, a lactation educator, parenting coach, and a mom. She's been featured on Parents .com, Good Morning America, ABC Nightly News, Romper, Condé Nast Traveler, Very Well Family, and NBC News, and we got to chat on the impact of focusing focusing on children's weight. I felt this conversation so deeply, and it's been interesting, I noted this in the conversation but Mila was born an almost 10 pound baby, and it has been so interesting to like hear the way people talk about her body right now as a baby and like oh she's so healthy and what they mean is like she's got rolls she's a chunky little peanut. And then as you get older, how that shifts. And when we see humans who have fat on their bodies, there's this belief that it means they're unhealthy and just wild, like how early these conversations start. And Dr. Mona and I got to dive into that huge impact that it can have on kids, and ways that you can be an advocate for them at the pediatric office. If this podcast is serving you, if it has been helpful for you in any capacity, please take a minute to rate and review it. It helps other folks find this podcast so that they can have access to free information to guide them on their journey as well. I'm so grateful for y 'all. Christopher Gregor, now on trial, is charged in the death of his 6-year-old son Corey Micciolo. Gregor took his son to the hospital saying he put his son down for a nap because he was sleepy and nauseous. When Corey woke up he was stumbling, slurring his words, and having trouble breathing. Corey died at the hospital. Surveillance video inside the gym facility at the complex where Gregor lived shows Corey running on a treadmill while Gregor turns up the speed and incline of the machine until the 6-year-old can't keep up and falls off. Gregor lifts the boy off the ground by his shirt, holding Corey over the running treadmill. Corey's feet slide out from under him several times as he tries to get his footing, and Gregor appears to bite Corey on the back of the head. Corey eventually starts running again and falls from the treadmill five more times before Gregor shuts it off and they leave together. Corey's mother, Breanna Micciolo testified that she feared for Corey's life. Documentation shows she made more than 100 calls and emails to the Department of Child Protection reporting abuse. Pediatrician Dr. Nancy Deacon who treated Corey days before his death, testified to what she observed. Deacon listed a blue-grey bruise on his left cheek, a large yellow-green bruise on his left shoulder, another large yellow-green bruise on his left inner arm, and a blue bruise present on his elbow. Beyond over 12 bruises that covered Corey Micciolo's body, the doctor noted two areas on the right side of his chest, she called it two areas of hyper-pigmented skin, meaning the wound was healing but pigment had not yet returned.
