As this podcast is being released on Thanksgiving Day Paul begins by thanking those people who choose to follow the Foundation's work, those who forward our articles, podcasts and videos to others, and those who donate time and money to the Foundation. He also addresses the challenges of living at three different homes (Bainbridge Island, Portland and Rancho Mirage) in 2024. We know some donations have been lost in the mail. Our concern is people will declare a charitable deduction that did not actually happen. By the way, the permanent address of the Foundation is now - 2445 NW Westover Road #311, Portland, Oregon 97210. Paul comments on his challenges in recommending cryptocurrency. Finally he discusses the life changing impact of goal setting. The following are articles and videos on goal setting from some of the Truth Tellers Paul recommends. Jim Dahle writes to young doctors but the information is usually good for all people who are putting together a financial plan. The Power of Focus in Your Financial Life Jonathan Clements is struggling with cancer and for anyone facing death sooner than expected, and the goal setting that might be considered, I think you will find his journey worth reading. The C Word. William Bernstein has recently updated his best selling , “The Four Pillars of Investing.” In this short introduction you will hopefully decided it's worth reading the rest of the book. Here is a podcast that you won't want to miss. Larry Swedroe is interviewed by another Truth Teller, Ben Felix and Cameron Passmore. The book they discuss has been updated since the interview. "Your Complete Guide to a Successful and Secure Retirement" is one of the best books I know for those trying to address the many important retirement goals. While Christine Benz is the Director of Personal Finance at Morningstar I thought it might be interesting to get her take on the non-financial plans we should consider. Her new book has become a best seller. How to Retire: 20 lessons for a happy, successful, and wealthy retirement.

Paul Merriman, Chris Pedersen and Daryl Bahls each share his studies and comments about rebalancing a portfolio—how often, how much change before rebalancing, and when does it make sense not to rebalance? They also answer listener/viewer questions and Paul makes a special offer for a free chapter from Larry Swedroe's book, Your Complete Guide to a Successful & Secure Retirement. (See details in ‘Links' below). Q&A Which asset classes should be in taxable accounts and which in tax-advantaged accounts? To answer this oft-asked question, Paul recommends Larry Swedroe's book, Your Complete Guide to a Successful & Secure Retirement and encourages investors to read Chapter 10 from the book, “The Asset Location Decision." See “Links” below for details to buy the book and access the free chapter. “Is there a rebalancing bonus?” Chris answers this question and illustrates his answer with the chart, “Is There a Rebalancing Bonus? … Not Much.” See this chart and others mentioned below. “I want to help my 36-year-old daughter establish a retirement portfolio. What do you think of using Vanguard Life Strategy Moderate Growth Fund (VSMGX)?” Chris answers by suggesting a better answer may be a Target Date Fund and shows the Vanguard Target Date Fund Glidepath. See this and other charts and tables mentioned here. “Can I expect to invest in the funds you recommend today and hold them for the rest of my life?” Daryl's answer is yes, using our 4-Fund portfolio. He shows why by comparing the Total Market Index funds to our “No-Nonsense Portfolios” in Table 1a: “No-Nonsense Portfolios for Sound Investing: Equity Asset Allocation” and Table 2a.1, which shows “Comparison Data,” drawing special attention to our U.S. Only 4-Fund Portfolio over the Total Market Index and S&P 500. Daryl also offers a third Table, “No-Nonsense Portfolio Performance Rankings by Decade (1970-2021). See these and all charts and tables mentioned here. Pros in every field will tell you that confidence is a huge part of earning more money. But what happens when life delivers blow after blow? We've been there ourselves, and so has our guest, Harma Hartouni, who moved to America with his family and was flat broke. Much of his story stems from a childhood relationship with a dad that was less than perfect (to put it mildly). While this is not a direct rags-to-riches story, things started to turn around for Harma, and he now runs one of the top real estate firms in Southern California, along with having a passion for sharing his life experiences for others to learn from. Today Harma shares his compelling story of perseverance, confidence, and learning lessons from horrible experiences instead of falling back on them as a crutch, like so many do. Blackrock Cuts ETF Fees Cut to Near Zero Lower fees... hooray! Right? The race to zero fees continues with BlackRock's latest move to drop ETF fees, which is the lastest blow in their fight for assets with Vanguard. While we aren't complaining about more money in your pocket, the slashed fees leave us with a lingering question: what exactly should investors want when it comes to their strategy? Beyond the latest flashy headline of the week, what's your framework for making investing decisions? Top Mistakes People Make When Planning for Retirement Have you made your portfolio more conservative to soothe your market volatility fears? Larry Swedroe recently shared some big retirement planning mistakes which could cost you millions of dollars in missed opportunity. The Your Complete Guide to a Successful and Secure Retirement author (and previous Stacking Benjamins guest) brings some good points to the table, and Joe and OG share some math scary enough to make you think twice before slowing things down. Not All Products Are Meant for You We're mixing things up with today's Haven Life Line. Margaret saw a video online that's filled with mostly good advice, but sneaks in a "secure compound interest account" comment at the end of the clip. What's the deal? Joe and OG share exactly what this account actually is, and give some frank advice for people who may be considering investing. Enjoy!
Welcome to Episode 44 of Retire Me! In the world of enterprise technology, businesses want proof that the solutions they are buying will perform as expected. They look for research, they test solutions to make sure they are compatible with their environment, and they build business cases based on their findings. These steps help businesses make good decisions. When I discovered factor investing in 2017, it made sense that investment decisions should be carried out the same way as big business decisions. Asking questions like: What is the evidence that supports our decision making? The data robust and reliable? Can we implement it in a way that fits my life and my goals? Can I expect a relatively better ROI on this approach over decades, versus other alternatives? Over the next 4 weeks, we will: Introduce factor investing more in depth Explain the main factors that drive investment returns Explain how factors can be implemented Offer some pros and cons and reasons why you may want to either pursue or avoid a factor investment strategy Most of the content for these episodes is inspired and heavily sourced from Larry Swedroe and Andrew Berkin's book: "Your Complete Guide to Factor Based Investing" Your Complete Guide to Factor-Based Investing: The Way Smart Money Invests Today: Berkin, Andrew L, Swedroe, Larry E: 9780692783658: Books - Amazon.ca The design point of these episodes is to explain factors in "Plain English". Some of the research is a little wonky, so I have done my best to condense and simplify wherever possible. If you have questions or clarifications, please message me or send an email to retirempod@gmail.com Show notes will be up on my blog at www.walhoutfinancial.ca/podcast Enjoy!
For long term investing (retirement investing, for example), many people will use an asset allocation that is somewhere between 70% and 100% in a portfolio of equities. They may trim that back as they approach retirement, moving to a portfolio that is between 40% and 60% in equities. The design of a portfolio like this is to create an income for a long period of time. Picture a bucket of water that you slowly draw from, a cup at a time, for 40 years or more. But how do you build a portfolio for a fixed spending goal? What if you have a big purchase coming up in 10 years? It's long enough that you think you can take some risk and you want the money to grow. Picture a bucket of water that you are going to tip over and empty all on the same day. It changes how you can invest. In this podcast I walk through an approach from Larry Swedroe in his book "Your Complete Guide to a Successful and Secure Retirement". Larry outlines different % equity allocations based on how far out your financial goal is. Detailed notes and charts are available on my blog at www.walhoutfinancial.ca/podcast Enjoy!
This “Money Talks” event brought together Rick Ferri, Larry Swedroe and Paul Merriman to discuss personal finance and investing from their various perspectives. It was a free live online event hosted by Choose FI’s Community Director Jennifer Mah on Oct. 7, 2020. Due to length of the conversation, we are presenting it in two parts. Here are some of the diverse topics covered. You can access Part 1 here for Video and here for Podcast. Rick discussed the 4 levels of getting to investment nirvana. Larry recommended anyone getting ready for retirement read Your Retirement Quest: 10 Secrets for Creating and Living a Fulfilling Retirement by Alan Spector and Keith Lawrence. Today, Debbie talks to Kerry Hannon, author of the new and well-timed Great Pajama Jobs: Your Complete Guide to Working from Home. Kerry is the author of 14 books and an expert on career transitions, entrepreneurship, personal finance, and retirement. She writes regularly for The New York Times, MediaWatch, Forbes and other media outlets, including NextAvenue.org.Kerry answers the question: will we ever return to the office or is remote working here to stay? Debbie wishes WFH (working from home) had been an accepted phenomenon decades ago when she had small children.Kerry shares some key skills that can make working from home more effective (good communication, discipline, technical literacy) as well as tips for older and more experienced workers, including the semi-retired. She makes the point that work is not just about the money. They also talk about ageism, still a pervasive issue in the workplace, and how remote work might alleviate it by focusing attention on performance and productivity. Finally, they talk about one of Kerry's favorite topics: cultivating resilience by learning new skills. Expand your brain, she says. Adopt a beginner’s mind, stay open, and take risks. Consider living and working in a foreign country that is welcoming to location-independent workers. Perhaps not compatible with our pandemic world right now, but travel and living somewhere else are often part of a gap year dream. This is the second of three Q&A sessions with Paul Merriman, Chris Pedersen, Director of Research, and Daryl Bahls, Director of Analytics with The Merriman Financial Education Foundation. It is a follow-up to Paul's webinar, “Which Is The Best 1-,2-, 3- and 4 Fund Strategy?” sponsored by the American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) on Sept. 23, 2020. At the end of that presentation, Paul was joined by Chris and Daryl to address questions for 30 minutes. As there were many more questions than time permitted answering, this podcast — also available as a video — continues to address those audience questions. In this Q&A session, the three “conflict-free teachers” dive into these big topics: • Equity asset class selection • Comparing returns • Dollar-cost averaging • Sequence returns and risks in accumulation and distribution stages Questions addressed include: - Why don’t you include small and large growth in your recommendations? - Gold and commodities: why not? - What’s the value of adding international funds? - Does it matter whether you use Vanguard or Fidelity Funds? - Do you use Portfolio Visualizer to understand the factor weighing of your portfolio? - How do your “Best in Class” ETFs, that duplicate DFA’s, compete with Vanguard? - Which strategies are better when you consider tax implications of rebalancing? Paul answers this last question briefly, citing from and recommending DIYers read “Your Complete Guide to a Successful and Secure Retirement” by Larry Swedroe and Kevin Grogan. Dr. Scott Dell with Francis Marion University in South Carolina joined us for this episode of Where Accountants Go, the Accounting Careers Podcast. Everyone says they want “variety” in their careers, but I will challenge you to find a career with more variety than Scott's. In this episode we touch on entrepreneurship in many, many industries, public accounting, teaching, and even a little industry accounting as well. Dr. Dell started his career in public accounting, but quickly realized that he wanted something different. Fast forward a few years and he was well into his entrepreneurial journey. Scott's background is so diverse that I'm sure we missed a few things, but his business endeavors include training in the IT space, a cheesecake restaurant, and owning a Dish Network sales company to name just a few. However, one theme that runs through all of it is that he enjoys teaching. He started as an adjunct professor many years ago and has continued to enjoy teaching throughout his career. He has been the Accounting Program Director for another university in the past, and most recently had joined Francis Marion University as an accounting professor in 2019. A few of Dr. Dell's more recent endeavors include… Joining the founder of Sylvan Learning Centers as a partner in a new venture helping job seekers make a “killer” first impression when asked the question “Tell me about yourself”: www.IntroEDGE.com A new start-up venture in the job search space: MyCareerOpportunity.com A new book, “Your Complete Guide to Succeeding With LinkedIn”. While the coronavirus pandemic has changed everyone’s life — and hopefully without illness or loss — for The Merriman Financial Education Foundation it has been a huge game changer, in a very good way. In this podcast Paul shares some new ways he’s able to serve more investors and he answers seven questions from his listeners and readers. 1. Can you discuss the funds to hold in different types of investments, like Roth and regular IRAs, 401ks and taxable accounts? 5:00 2. I have several accounts. Should I try to build your Ultimate Buy & Hold portfolio in each account or build it with 3 or 4 funds per account? 12:35 3. As a 28-year-old investor with a 40-year time horizon, why shouldn’t I put all my investments into more volatile funds, like U.S. and international small cap value and emerging markets, rather than all 10 asset classes in the Ultimate Buy and Hold Strategy? 15:20 4. Many academic studies, as well as your advice, show strong correlation between low expense ratios and mutual fund performance. Your mutual fund and ETF recommendations largely include funds with low expense ratios, however the "International Small Cap Value" asset class ETF (DLS) has a higher expense ratio (0.58%) than I would like. In order to minimize investment expenses, would you recommend substituting another similar investment with a lower expense ratio? I am considering international small cap (VSS - 0.11% ER) or Vanguard Total International Index Fund (VTSNX - 0.08% ER) as a substitute. 18:00 5. Why should we think that HISTORY is the best source of guidance for asset class allocation? Your recommendations for both the "Ultimate Buy and Hold" and the “Two Funds for Life" look to history for efficient asset class weightings. The other source that could be looked to is THE MARKET. It seems that The Market includes all the historical information, as well as the wisdom and knowledge of Paul Merriman, Warren Buffet, all the academic research, all the hedge fund managers, all the mathematicians with supercomputers, etc. Also, in some instances, The Market seems to give a more credible answer than History. For example, history shows bonds returned 6% annually, but the market shows bonds will return about 1.5% going forward. 23:05 6. How can you justify investing in a market that is highly likely to go down due to the coronavirus, coming recession, 30% unemployment, historically high P/E ratios and sky high debt? 37:50 7. What are the likely losses investors must expect in the market? 48:55 Mentioned in this podcast: "Your Complete Guide to a Successful & Secure Retirement by Larry Swedroe and Kevin Grogan Choose FI Seattle Zoom Meetup, Saturday May 16. link to Kelly Cannon’s list of topics Join 20,000+ savvy investors and receive Paul’s free twice-a-month newsletter. Welcome to Episode 17 of Retire Me. Today, we discuss Larry Swedroe's new book "Your Complete Guide to a Successful and Secure Retirement". Larry is a prolific author and practitioner in the investment and retirement space. We talk about the key elements to a successful retirement. This list has nothing to to with numbers and figures. It has everything to do with your passions, your purpose, and your growth. It applies to retirees, and to anyone who wants to build a purpose-driven life. I also introduce a 9 part series entitled "Key Questions for Long Term Investors" where I lay out my investment philosophy. This will dovetail into a longer series I'm going to do on factor investing, and form the foundation for a weekly segment I will do on investments going forward. Detailed links and show notes will be posted to my blog at www.walhoutfinancial.ca/retire-me shortly. Thanks for listening, Mark

Our guest this week is noted author and advisor, William Bernstein. Bill’s background and entree to finance is unique—a neurologist by training, Bill self-taught himself the principles of investing and asset allocation, eventually parlaying that knowledge into a successful financial advisory practice and a series of influential, critically acclaimed books such as "The Intelligent Asset Allocator." In this conversation, we explore Bill’s background and how it shaped his development and thinking as an investor and how he applies those lessons in working with clients who are trying to meet goals like a comfortable, secure retirement. “I had to figure out how to save and invest on my own”: Bill’s crash course into investing and constructing a portfolio (1:29) “I had to figure out how to save and invest on my own”: Bill’s crash course into investing and constructing a portfolio (1:29) • “I had to figure out how to save and invest on my own”: Bill’s crash course into investing and constructing a portfolio (1:29) • Separating the wheat from the chaff: How Bill decides what investing research matters and what doesn’t (4:30) • Top of the list: Books that profoundly influenced Bill’s investment philosophy and approach (5:45) • “The overwhelming science of investing does not speak well of active management”: Bill on why empirical data ought to settle most questions (and why active-share doesn’t hold up to scrutiny) (7:02) • “You approach it with extreme caution”: Bill explains why investors should be skeptical of most factors they encounter in the “factor zoo”, save a few (9:27) • A question that’s giving Bill pause: Is value too crowded a trade? (10:33) • Is low-volatility the most attractive factor from a behavioral standpoint? Bill worries it’s gotten too expensive. (12:02) • Fingers (and toes) crossed: Bill thinks value is cheap enough to stick with (12:55) • “Really, not very much”: Bill on how his approach to asset allocation has evolved over time (13:43) • “The riskiness of stocks is not an intrinsic characteristic of stocks; it’s more a characteristic of the investor”: Why stocks’ volatility doesn’t fluster younger investors, but freaks out older investors (14:38) • On how we tend to overrate our risk tolerance: “The difference between being able to see (losses) in a spreadsheet and actually manage (through losses) in real time is the difference between crashing an airplane in a flight simulator and in the real world” (15:38) • “If you’ve won the game, stop playing”: How to shake older investors out of their complacency with equity risk and recency bias (16:53) • “The very best physicians are consumed by self-doubt”: How a high ratio of “rumination-to-celebration” can help investors constructively reckon with shortcomings in their approach and improve (19:26) • Getting it wrong and therefore right: Bill explains how advisors can use their own fallibility and uncertainty to fortify their relationship with clients (versus scaring them to death) (21:12) • An argument with Jack Bogle: How a debate with the Vanguard founder about foreign-stock investing became an object lesson in how reality intrudes on theory (and how that informs Bill’s approach to managing clients) (22:56) • “You don’t appreciate it until bad things happen”: On whether the rally in riskier bonds has changed Bill’s tune on limiting fixed-income investments to short-term, high-grade fare (24:25) • “Investment is a process that transfers wealth to people that have a strategy and can execute it from those who don’t and can’t” (26:22) • “A reasonable hypothesis, but it got tested” (and failed): Bill on the argument for active bond investing (27:02) • Earthquakes and execrable returns: Why the best investing and economic gains have been realized in English-speaking countries. I don’t know why exactly, but lately I’ve been hearing from my millennial clients their big concern about not being able to afford retirement. I’m talking 20 and 30 years olds freaking out because they have no idea how they’ll ever be able to save up $1 million (or most likely more) for retirement, plus pay of their student loans, buy a home, start a family, and just simply live! So, I thought I would bring on a retirement expert who can shed some light on the most important things we all need to know about retirement. My guest for this episode is Larry Swedroe, the author of Your Complete Guide to a Successful and Secure Retirement, as well as the director of research for Buckingham Strategic Wealth and the BAM Alliance. Here are a few things we discussed in this episode. What People Forgot to Plan – What to Do in Retirement Most people focus on the money part. How much do I need? How should I invest to reach that number? Will it be enough? But really, you should start by outlining what you want to do when you’re actually retired. How do you want to fill your days? What’s your exit strategy from the workforce? Are you going to do a full-stop retirement or ease into retirement by going part-time or consult? Before testing out any retirement calculator, define what your retirement will look like first. Planning to Live Longer Than 20 Years in Retirement Another concern I often hear is that we’re all living longer. Many of us will live until 100! So if we retire at 65 and live until 100, that’s 35 years of retirement we need to prepare to have income for. That might make your palms sweaty, but it’s actually fairly simple math to figure out how to afford a long retirement. Larry suggests taking the number of years you plan on being retired for and multiplying it by the gross annual income you’ll need to live off of in retirement. Then, figure out how inflation will come into play, and that’s your number! How to Be a Savvy Investor Larry shared some amazing pieces of wisdom when I asked him about how we all can be savvy investors. Here are his top tips: Make sure you’re only spending money on things that are important to you. Save as early and as often as possible. Make your savings automatic through auto-debits and auto-withdrawals to your savings and investment accounts. Read the book Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness by Richard H. Thaler & Cass R. Sunstein to learn how to nudge yourself into doing the right things Invest in low cost Index funds or index ETFs Avoid investment products sold by insurance companies and Wall Street investment brokers as they’ll be more expensive and most likely won’t outperform index funds. Don’t work with any financial profession who earns a commission when working with you. Diversify your portfolio to include more foreign equities and fixed income. Don’t focus solely on domestic stocks and bonds (just Google what happened in Japan). Don’t mistake the home you live in for a real estate investment. If you live in it, it’s not an investment. Once you sell it, it is. Be careful with real estate investing (just look at what happened and is happening in the U.S.) For full episod show notes, visit https://jessicamoorhouse.com/192
In this episode, Tom offers some reminders about not tinkering with your investments as the market goes up and down and which bond funds are preferable. The conversation then turns to initial public offerings and why the hype around them is not always worth believing. Last year's market movements, real estate capital, and Delaware trusts are also covered. Tax efficiency and required minimum distribution on IRAs. Leaving your money alone for the long haul. Bond funds that we like. Traditional IRAs, charity donations and figuring out the tax laws. Initial public offerings and the excitement around them. The bad news about your money movements late last year. Investing money from a rental property in a Delaware trust. A little bit about our upcoming Science of Retirement Event! On the show today Tom is riding almost solo, with a small cameo by Don, talking about some scandalous real estate investment claims that have been cropping up in podcasts recently! Other than that, Tom looks at asset based insurance, global versus local market investments and smart beta. He is then joined by Kevin Grogan, co-author of Your Complete Guide to a Successful and Secure Retirement to chat about the four big threats to your retirement and the four percent rule! Asset-based, long term insurance. The deal with real estate investments. Exploitation by evangelical processes and incestuous networks. Global markets, home bias and local stock investments. Smart beta investment portfolios and why Tom is not a fan. High suicide rates during retirement. The four big threat to your retirement! How useful is the four percent rule? Robin Powell interviews Larry Swedroe, a Principal and Director of Research for Buckingham Strategic Wealth, an independent member of the BAM Alliance, best known for his books and articles on investing. In the interview, Larry talks about his long career and his passion for evidence-based investing. He also discusses his latest book, Your Complete Guide to a Successful and Secure Retirement, which he has co-authored with Kevin Grogan and other colleagues at Buckingham.
