If your toddler is suddenly taking forever to fall asleep—or bouncing off the walls when bedtime rolls around—it's tempting to think the solution is a later bedtime. But that's actually the wrong move in most cases. In this episode, Allison Egidi, pediatric sleep and wellness coach, explains the #1 mistake parents make with toddler bedtime routines and what to do instead. She breaks down why toddlers resist sleep, what a “second wind” really is, and how to structure evenings so kids can fall asleep more quickly and rest more soundly. You'll learn: Why pushing bedtime later usually backfires The role of activity level in the hour before bed How overtired toddlers get their notorious “second wind” What an age-appropriate bedtime really looks like Practical tips to help your toddler fall asleep faster Allison also shares a real-life example from a family who thought their 3-year-old needed a 9 PM bedtime—and how one simple shift transformed their nights. If you've been tempted to delay bedtime in hopes of making your toddler “more tired,” this episode will give you a fresh perspective and tools you can try tonight. Is it possible to sleep train your baby without leaving them to cry it out? The short answer: yes—but probably not without some tears. In this episode of How Long 'Til Bedtime?, pediatric sleep coach Allison Egidi breaks down the myths and realities of “no cry” sleep training methods and what parents can realistically expect. You'll learn: What “cry it out” really means (definitions vary so much) Why even the most gentle, hands-on sleep training methods usually involve some crying Why it's important to choose the best sleep training approach based on your baby's temperament and your parenting style Why gradual, more supportive methods may work best for younger babies—but not always for older ones How to minimize tears and set your child up for independent, restful sleep The truth is, parenting is never one-size-fits-all. Some families thrive with cry it out, others prefer a slower, gentler approach, and both can work. What matters most is finding a method that feels sustainable for you and supports your baby's development. If you've been wondering whether you can teach your baby to sleep without leaving them to cry for long stretches, this episode will give you clarity, compassion, and options. Stop Adding Cereal to Your Baby's Bottle! Why This Outdated Advice is Harming Your Child's Health | The Prime Podcast Are you a new parent struggling with a baby who won't sleep, seems constantly fussy, or is always crying? Have you been told by a pediatrician, a family member, or a parent in an online group to "just add some rice cereal to the bottle" to fill them up? This advice, though often well-intentioned, is a dangerous relic from the past that could be setting your child up for a lifetime of health issues. In Episode 340 of The Prime Podcast, Dr. Skip and Dr. Julie Wies deliver a powerful and urgent message to all parents: STOP adding cereal to your baby's bottle. They expose this common practice as unscientific, outdated, and detrimental to an infant's developing system. This episode is a comprehensive takedown of one of the most persistent myths in infant care. The doctors explain why this advice is not only outside the scope of most pediatricians' nutritional training but is fundamentally at odds with a baby's physiology. You will learn why infants lack the essential enzymes to digest complex starches, how this practice can lead to severe digestive distress, and the shocking link between early introduction of solids and the modern childhood obesity epidemic, insulin resistance, and blood sugar dysregulation. More importantly, Dr. Skip and Dr. Julie reveal the real reason your baby is uncomfortable. It's rarely a hunger issue. Instead, they dive deep into the neurology of infancy, explaining how common misalignments (subluxations) in the neck and mid-back from the birthing process can interfere with a baby's ability to swallow, digest, and even feel comfortable enough to sleep. If you're feeling frustrated, judged, and desperate for a real solution that addresses the root cause of your baby's discomfort, this episode is your definitive guide. KEY TAKEAWAYS A Dangerous Myth: Adding cereal to a baby's bottle is outdated advice that can cause significant harm to their digestive and metabolic health. Digestive Immaturity: Babies do not produce the necessary enzyme (salivary amylase) to properly digest the starches in rice cereal, leading to digestive upset. Long-Term Health Risks: This practice is linked to the development of enlarged fat cells, insulin resistance, and an increased risk of childhood obesity. It's Not Hunger, It's Discomfort: Fussiness, poor sleep, and excessive crying are often signs of neurological and structural issues (subluxations), not a need for more food. The Neurological Connection: Misalignments in the neck and mid-back can directly impact a baby's ability to swallow and the function of the stomach valve (cardiac sphincter), leading to reflux and spit-up. The True Solution: Instead of masking symptoms with food, the primary issue must be addressed. A pediatric chiropractor can identify and correct the underlying misalignments, allowing the nervous system to function properly and providing lasting relief for your baby. If you are struggling with your baby's feeding, sleep, or digestive issues, and you're tired of receiving outdated advice, it's time to seek a better solution. Find a pediatric chiropractor in your area to be a part of your trusted healthcare team. Are you stressing over getting your baby's wake windows just right? You're not alone. Wake window charts are everywhere—on Instagram, in parenting groups, and even recommended by some sleep consultants. But here's the truth: wake windows aren't evidence-based. In this episode of How Long ‘Til Bedtime?, pediatric sleep coach Allison Egidi explains where wake windows came from, why they often backfire, and what research actually shows about healthy baby and toddler sleep. You'll learn: Why wake windows can create more stress than solutions How circadian rhythm—not wake window timing—drives quality sleep The power of consistent nap times and bedtime anchors What to focus on instead if wake windows aren't working for your baby If you've ever felt like your baby is “broken” because they won't fit into a chart, this conversation will set you free. Instead of micromanaging wake times, Allison shows you how to build sustainable sleep habits rooted in evidence and your child's natural rhythm. Resources mentioned: Episode 99. So many mums feel pressured by rigid schedules, conflicting advice, and the constant comparison game. But here's the truth: babies aren't meant to sleep like adults, and understanding their natural biology can make a world of difference for both you and your little one.In this episode, Dr Renee White sits down with Professor Helen L. Ball, Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Durham Infancy & Sleep Centre. Helen has spent decades researching infant sleep and is the founder of the Baby Sleep Information Source (BASIS). Her work bridges the gap between science and parenting, offering evidence-based guidance that supports both parents and health professionals.Together, Renee and Helen explore the realities of baby sleep, challenge outdated myths, and share practical ways you can feel more confident (and more rested). You'll hear about:The origins of strict baby sleep schedules – and why they don't align with infant biology.Safe bedsharing and breastfeeding – what the research actually shows.Swaddling myths – how it impacts arousal, feeding, and safety.Recognising when sleep struggles might signal something else – and when to seek help.Practical strategies you can try tonight to harmonise your rest with your baby's natural rhythms.Whether you're a first-time mum trying to navigate newborn nights or a parent feeling burnt out by sleep advice that just doesn't work for your family, this conversation is here to bring you clarity, reassurance, and some much-needed perspective. The soothing sound of pink noise is just what your baby needs to fall asleep! The consistent sound is similar to white noise for babies, but has slightly different characteristics that your child may prefer. Playing pink noise for sleep can help mask distractions that prevent your baby from falling asleep, and keeps those sounds from waking up your little one once they finally go down. Don't spend another night with a cranky baby keeping the whole family awake, play this sleep pink noise all night so everyone in the household can get some much needed rest! While playing white noise for babies, it's important to keep tabs on the volume, because any white noise machine, smartphone, or computer can put out levels that are too loud for your child. It's recommended to play the sound at least a few feet from where your infant is sleeping and to keep the volume no louder than the sound of a soft shower.Parents can download an app to turn their smartphone into a sound level meter. One good, free, option is the sound level meter app created by the U.S. National Institutes for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) available on the app store as the NIOSH SLM app. Here are some great products to help you sleep!
