If students or architecture/graduates are not able to hold a conversation and be engaged with others such as their tutors and peers, their employers, the other consultants, the contractor and supplier, the design team members, they would not be able to form a connection and be able to do their job in a satisfactory manner. Extending our discussion on the topic of how to compete globally, the skills of verbal engagement including holding a conversation are not superficial. In that form of engagement, the students are able to interpret the world, form an opinion and communicate well. This episode referred to the clubhouse event at the ''School of Architecture" clubhouse room and quoted from Huat Lim's points.© 2021 Talk Architecture, Author: Naziaty Mohd YaacobPhoto (artwork): The "winged seed of desire" found in Bangsar's Jalan Sepat (or some fish name).
In psychology, the sense of self concept is one of the important primary understanding for self growth and awareness. 'Being present at the moment' and aware of the situation we are in, is the phenomenological thinking principle, from the human being perspective. Establishing from a meditative state we can begin to unravel the complexities of phenomena in relation to our sense of self with our surroundings. In this podcast episode, we attempted in the first instance to interpret this awareness and underline the importance of consciousness in phenomenology to postulate how theory of architecture should be considered in architectural practice. We refer to the article: How Architectural “Theory” Disconnects the Profession From the Public (Ross Brady, 2017) in Common Edge; And began to assemble a case for theory to be a fundamental learning in architecture education and its relevance to practice. © 2021 Talk Architecture, Author: Naziaty Mohd YaacobPhoto of Terminalia calamansanai (winged seeds) taken in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur early 2021.

Hanna Ahmad joins coach Chase Barron to talk about the concept of progression. How does "progress" really work? How do you actually do your first push-up? How do you actually eat a healthier diet? How do you actually achieve your biggest fitness goals? Losing weight, building muscle, and moving better all require 2 things - goals and progress. In this conversation, Hanna and I explain how to create meaningful progress in the gym and in the kitchen. We talk about the importance of starting small and taking this journey one step at a time. Most notably, we explore what it means to “walk the talk” and practice what you preach. Guest Hanna Ahmad, freshly 30, is a Patreon supporter and 30-day challenge addict from Bangsar, Malaysia. First Day Special Semester (Pre Design Thesis) Site Visit:Today's University of Malaya's campus site visit started at 7 am and was in most parts a drizzly rainy affair. We walked from the front of the Law Faculty, to the Faculty of the Built Environment, Faculty of Medicine, chatted at 9:45 am at the University Malaya Medical Centre's Food Court and continued through the Faculty of Engineering, across the garden around the varsity lake, chatted in front of the Library and went pass the Dewan Tunku Canselor (main hall) and ended with lunch in Bangsar. We observed a lot, ask questions and stopped along the way many times, talking about the in-between spaces, relationships, what is missing and much more. In this podcast, we try to summarize the important points by inquiring the "why", "what", "who" questions namely, hoping to start further conversations to assist the studio.
A quick 5 minutes update previewing on the next batch 2020-2021 design thesis projects on University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur Campus. 13 students have signed up for Unit 2, and with the studio tutors gearing up for another year of site-context issues driven approach to design, we can expect 13 different projects on dealing with a variety of topics from, redesigning the student union facilities and the library, or maybe redevelopment of the lake area, a few faculties being redesigned, some hostels and connections to the neighbourhood in Petaling Jaya or even Bangsar perhaps. We shall see. The podcasts on this "action research" and "on-going design" would provide for insights and fresh input on aspects of the design thesis approach in-situ and hopefully we can feel the close connections to the design process. These podcasts will start in July 13, 2020 onward for the special semester, while the interviews with graduated and graduating students will still proceed until August 2020.

Bangsar has been imprinted in our contemporary consciousness as an affluent neighbourhood, and a commercial area where people spend most of their time socialising. But despite its modern iteration, Bangsar has a humble history, and a heritage of its own that rivals other old townships in the Klang Valley. Recognising this, Kenneth Wong organises walking tours around the area for people to visit the more intimate areas of Bangsar, firm in his belief that we should take ownership of our history, and be proactive in democratising it for the benefit of others.

Kebun-kebun Bangsar, the proposal for a garden project on a piece of TNB reserve land in the Bangsar area, has been strongly met with both support and opposition from the community at large. The project that was intended to bring the Bangsar community together hasn't quite had that effect, and saw the residents of Bangsar's Taman Weng Lock successfully launching a petition drive against the garden project, which was proposed on a hillslope above their neighbourhood. Kevin Mark Low, an architect and resident of Taman Weng Lock, joins us to share his and the other residents concerns, against the project.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
